Avatar is, is, after Titanic , the second profitable film of all time. It is a political film. The action is
set on the planet Pandora, which is rich in a mineral called creatively enough “unobtainium.” An evil corporation goes against the native population, the Na’Vi, who besides being a pleasant shade of blue, has the bodies of runway models. Earthlings sent to negotiate mineral rights with the Na’Vi go native (literally) and eventually conspire with the Na’Vi to fight the evil corporation. The Na’Vi are a peaceful people who live in a tree, hunt with bows and arrows, and recognize that they don’t own the planet, the planet owns them. Philosophically there is some pretty tricky work going on here. The plot attacks on corporate culture, on religion and capitalism. To summarize: corporations are bad, religion is misguided, and capitalism is wrong. I don’t think most people go to this film to get a dose of New Age religion, but it doesn’t prevent them either. In making this film a profitable one, we accept the message that humans are the problem not the solution, and that we could solve our environmental concerns by shooting ourselves into outer space. Or I suppose we could move into trees, hunt with bows and arrows, and ride around on the backs of pterodactyls. The irony of the success of Avatar is is that it is released by Fox Films which is a division of News Corp, the flagship of Fox Television and Fox News. (www.britannica.com)

I finally managed to find out that he was dropped off at the curb on Christmas Eve by his sister-inlaw and told to go to New Orleans, to his family. She had given him some cash to buy a ticket. When I asked if he could come back tomorrow, he said that he had no place to stay. He then said he would wait at the airport until tomorrow. Naturally, I felt ashamed. Here I was feeling sorry for myself about being alone on Christmas, when this man, Mr.MacDonald, was sent to me to remind me of what being alone really meant. It broke my heart. I told him we would sort it out and our Customer Service agent helped him book a flight the next morning. We gave him the senior citizens fare, leaving him some extra money for travelling. About this time he started to look very tired, and when I asked him if he was all right, I saw that his leg was wrapped in a bandage. He had been standing on it that whole time, holding a plastic bag full of clothes.
U C S E T I I called for a wheelchair and we all stepped around to help him in. Suddenly, I noticed blood on his N bandage.
