APPENDIX 12
CALCULATION FOR SEISMIC `g’ LOAD FACTOR
a) BASIS The 'g load factor for use in Pipe stress analysis is derived based on the equations specified for "NON-STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS AND EQUIPMENT SUPPORTED BY STRUCTURES" as per CI 1632 of UBC-97.
b) CALCULATION FOR SEISMIC FACTOR Seismic Zone 1 (As per ADCO DOC No.30.99.91.0805). As per Uniform building Code-97, Volume 2, Section 1632, EQ 32-2
Fp = (ap* Ca * lp /Rp) * {1 + 3 hx/hr} Wp Where Fp
: Total Design lateral seismic force
ap
: In Structure Component Amplification factor (UBC-97, Table 16-0, item 3.B) = 1.0 Ca = Seismic Co-efficient (for Seismic Zone -1, Z=0.075 & Soil Profile Sd*, from Table 16-Q, UBC-97)
lp
: Importance factor (from sl no 4 of Tabe-16-K-UBC97/ADCO DOC No.30.99.91.0805)
: Element or component attachment elevation with respect to Grade
hr
: Structure roof elevation with respect to grade
Wp
: Weight of the component / element
m
: Mass of the component / element
= 0.12
*(Soil type is considered as S D as a conservative approach).

For Process plant piping, since a particular pipe routing, in general, will be passing through various elevations, to have a realistic estimation of elevations, an average value of hx / hr = 0.5 is considered. As per the above, Calculated value for Fp=0.1 W=0.1 mg Hence static seismic coefficient=0.1 Static seismic coefficient shall be 0.1g. The above factor shall be applied in CAESAR-II Pipe Stress analysis, in the two horizontal directions, acting non-concurrently, wherever applicable. As per UBC-97 Clause 1630.1.1, Ev= Load effect resulting from the vertical component of the earthquake ground motion, may be taken as zero for Allowable stress design. Hence no vertical seismic component is to be considered for pipe stress analysis.
