Our Mission Georgia Parent Support Network, Inc. is dedicated to providing support, education and advocacy for children and youth with mental illness, emotional disturbances, and behavioral differences and their families.

GPSN Supports Georgia Families Georgia Parent Support Network (GPSN) is a grassroots family-run non-profit organization established in
1987. GSPN works on the premise that families are key to systems change and believes that families are the best and most effective agents for change. GPSN was founded in response to the lack of knowledge about services and an actual lack of services in Georgia, that address the needs of children with mental illness, emotional disturbances, disturbances, and behavioral differences. differences. GPSN is a board-directed family support support organization whose board consists of 10 to 14 family members and concerned citizens citizens at any given time. Working with families at the community community level is at the heart of GPSN’s vision and mission. In FY16, GPSN served 1,124 children and their families. families. GPSN Family Support Partners Partners work one-on-one with families to provide care coordination, coordination, support, advocacy, education, mentoring, information, and referral services uniquely tailored tailored to each family’s specific specific needs. GPSN works to assist families in a variety variety of settings including schools, courts, social service agencies, mental health agencies, and other community agencies. Letter from the Board President 2016 was an exciting year at Georgia Parent Support Network. There are now over 20 Federation Chapters in Georgia and they continue to thrive. While each is different, they continue to reach many people with a message of resiliency and recovery. GPSN’s advocacy advocac y also reached new levels as the board, staff, families, and youth made their voices heard at the legislature, child-serving agencies, and local communities. communities. In 2016 we sent the message that “Children’s Mental Health Matters” Matters” and our voices were heard. It has been a privilege to be on this board, to work with the most dedicated staff, and to have the opportunity to meet many of the youth and families that GPSN serves. Therapeutic Foster Care continues to grow and do amazing work. Therapeutic Foster Care is a long-term, outof-home placement for children who have already entered the custody of a state agency or who have state funding and are in their family’s custody. The Therapeutic Youth Peer Center (TYPC) served 24 youth with services which allow and support s upport the youth in deciding on and following a life of o f their own choice. The TYPC is a place where young adults are empowered to live their lives as productive, healthy citizens within their communities. At the TYPC young adults receive the guidance and support needed to help them transition into adult roles and responsibilities. Young adults between the ages of 17 and 25 who have aged out of children and adolescent mental health services may be eligible for participation in the TYPC. We are proud of Youth M.O.V.E. Georgia and its three chapters; Atlanta, D.F.I.A. & F.A.V.O.R. Youth M.O.V.E. Georgia had an active year learning, planning, and participating in advocacy and community service projects to raise awareness and bring about positive changes within the mental health community. Youth M.O.V.E. Georgia worked to unite the voices of youth by hosting its second annual Recovery Month Spoken Word Competition in September and worked with the TYPC to host a Voter Registration Day and provide transportation transporta tion to early polling locations. locations . Youth M.O.V.E. members attended the National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health Annual Conference in November 2016 and worked hard to empower Georgia families by hosting a Holiday Giving Store in December. GPSN and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities sponsored Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week which took place during the first week of May. Hundreds rallied at the Freight Depot, followed by presentations in the Capitol Rotunda, This was followed by a Voices for Georgia’s Children panel discussion. discuss ion. Winners of the Art and Poetry Contests were also voted upon. The 12th Annual “Unmasking Children’s Mental Illness” Mardi Gras Benefit Ball was held at the Fox Theater and was a huge success. We honored State Representative Katie Dempsey (GA House Representative, District 13) and her passion for making a difference for children children in Georgia and crowned her Queen of the Ball. Thanks as always to the board, dedicated staff, and volunteers volunteers for all that you do. GPSN Programs and Service Statewide Family Network Advocacy - GPSN is the state chapter of the Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health and works with the 20 local chapters throughout Georgia to provide advocacy for families and train families to advocate for their children and themselves.
Therapeutic Foster Care - Therapeutic Foster Care is long-term, out-of-home placement for children who have already entered the custody of the Department of Family and Children’s Services. These children often exhibit emotional and behavioral difficulties and are

considered for therapeutic foster care when less intensive forms of foster care would not meet the child’s needs.
Respite Care Services - Respite care is planned or emergency relief for guardians or caregivers of children with a range of emotional, developmental developmental and behavioral behavioral challenges. Respite care occurs as part of ongoing mental health services. In some instances, respite takes place on an unplanned unplanned basis due to a crisis situation. Trained respite respite care workers assume the duties of caregiving caregiving for a brief period of time to give parents/guardians a break from the constant strain of parenting a child with serious emotional problems.
The Transitional Youth Peer Center - The Transitional Youth Peer Center Program provides services and training to youth between the ages of 17 and 25 who have aged out of o f child and adolescent mental health services. services. This provision of services is done through youth staff who serve as mentors and team workers at GPSN. The services and trainings trainings include, include, but are not limited to: to: vocational assessment, assessment, life skills, personal hygiene, cooking, tutoring, tutoring, interview skills, and youth support groups. These services are provided to the youth according to the youth’s individual needs and desires.
Youth M.O.V.E. Georgia - Youth M.O.V.E. Georgia is a youth-led, statewide organization devoted to improving services and systems that support positive growth and development. This is done by uniting the voices of individuals who have lived in and experienced various systems including mental health, juvenile justice, education, and child welfare. Youth M.O.V.E. welcomes any and all youth between the ages of 13 and 27.

2016 Outcomes, Highlights & Accomplishments •
GPSN advocates at the federal, state, local, and individual individual case level.

Provided support, food, clothing, and other basic necessities for children and families via the Statewide Family Network Grant.
•
Continued leadership in educating Georgia’s policymakers and legislators.
•
Served on committees across Georgia, including the Mental Health Planning Council, the Behavioral Health Services Coalition, the Recovery Initiative, the CHIPRA Committee, and the Care Management Entity Committee.
•
Provided families with accurate, up-to-date information on laws, school issues, behavioral, behavioral, emotional, and mental disorders, and community resources.
•
Provided holiday gifts to 259 children and families.
•
GPSN provided up-to-date and real-time, useful information through advocacy-based e-blasts to the email list of 1,830 people.
•
GPSN’s website and social media outlets provided informative articles and community happenings multiple times per week. GPSN’s Facebook page has 764 followers, the Twitter feed has 258 followers, and the GPSN website had an increase of 35.4% new visitors in 2016.
•
Responded to over 600 telephone calls for family support and referrals.
•
Provided safety and shelter to 91 children through the Therapeutic Therapeutic Foster Care program.
•
Provided services to 24 transitioning transitioni ng youth through the Transitioning Transitio ning Youth Peer Center.
