W

e generally take bhagyastana as 9th house which is said to be the house of prosperity. The lord of this house uplifts the horoscope in an appropriate dasha periods. When we say bhagyastana, it is understood that it is from lagna. We have also noted that all yogakaraka hail from 5 th or 9th houses. But 9 th house is the powerful trikona which carries more weightage for giving prosperity to the horoscope. It is interesting to note that if this concept is extended to other bhavas and analyse that house gives special insight to understand the progress and prosperity of that respective bhava. In order to understand 9th house or bhagyastana, we have to start from the lagna bhava and we already know that 9th house from lagna is called bhagyastana and that lord is very importantfor the progress and prosperity of the native. In the same way, if we start the 9 th from the 2nd house, it is called dhana bhagyastana. The 9th house from the 3 rd house is bhratru bhagyastana. 9th house from 4th house is sukha bhagyastana. The 9th house from the 5th house is putra bhagyastana. The 9th from the 6th house is called roga bhagyastana. The 9th house from 7th house is called vivaha bhagyastana. The 9th house from the 8th house is called ayur bhagyastana. The 9th house from the 9th house is called pitru bhagyastana. The 9th house from the 10th house is called karma bhagyastana. The 9th house from the 11 house is called labha bhagyastana. The 9th house from the 12th house is called moksha bhagyastana. In order to understand this concept, an example horoscope is taken and interpretation is made as follows:

the bhāva under consideration. The 7 th house is marriage and the fruits of marriage – children – therefore are seen in the 11 th from it, which is the 5th house. This fth house maybe reckoned in the reverse sometimes. Male charts have 5 th house as controller for children whereas female charts have 9th house as controller for children. This rule of thumb is also observed in the saptāśa chart, the 1/7th division of the rāśi, which is dedicated to the study of progeny. The saptāśa varga is riddled with intricate rules, such as the ārambha rāśi for the pregnancy count which can be delicate to decipher as well as the determination of the sex of the child. The saptāśa varga can even detail the pregnancies from dierent spouses in the case of multiple marriages.2

Determination of Gender

Jupiter is the naisargika putra-kāraka and the worship of Lord Śiva is always benecial for children. The three signs Cancer, Libra and Pisces are termed fruitful signs due to the śakti of Durgā, Lakṣmī and Sarasvatī respectively. Keeping these two vital points in mind, one can proceed to say that: 

All odd-signs indicate male children except the two wind signs Gemini and Aquarius.

All even signs indicate female children except the two water signs Cancer and Pisces.

We may conclude that signs indicating a male child are Aries, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Pisces. Signs indicating a female child are Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius. Pregnancy Count

The pregnancy count in the saptāṁ śa starts with the 5th or the 9th house and then follows a maņduka gati for every subsequent pregnancy. If the 5th house is the first pregnancy, then counting direct, the 7 th house is the second pregnancy, the 9th house the third pregnancy. Similarly, other pregnancies are known from subsequent 3rd houses. The reason being, from the 5th house, the next pregnancy is the younger sibling (3rd) of the rst pregnancy (5th) and is seen in the 3 rd house counted from the 5th house, which is the 7th house (normally) when counted direct. In case of

female horoscopes, the 9th house, 7th house and the 5th house are the rst, second and third pregnancies respectively as the counting is in reverse. Everything about a child/grandchild is known from the lord of pregnancy. If the lord is conjoined with other planets, then the conjoined planets indicate the sex of the child, else the sign of the pregnancy bhāva and dignity of the pregnancy lord decides. In case of parivartana involving the saptāṁ śa lagneśa, the of all children is reversed. In case of parivartanasex involving only the pregnancy bhāva, the sex of the concerned child is reversed. As mentioned earlier, the 5th and 9th houses of the saptāṁ śa chart are the controllers of pregnancy in male and female horoscopes respectively. The 2nd house from these are the principal māraka hāna for children. In male charts the 6th house is putra māraka and for female charts the 10th house is putra māraka.

How to go beyond Astrology of Fear with Spirituality? | BARRY ROSEN aturn is doing its thing again. Finally moving out of the worst part of the danger zone at 0.48 Sagittarius but not really going to lift fully until March 16th. That means the bogeyman fear is going to get you, right? Usually we deal with fear by drowning ourselves in food, abusive substances, sexual outlets, zoning out, watch TV or movies, playing video games or even escape to meditation. Does this serve us or numb us out?

When we turn on the television, the media is ranting and feeding our fear. Iran is firing test missiles. Trump is tweeting. The next storm watch is being hyped by the weather channel. Fear is a survival mechanism that protects us. Our parents taught us to be fearful so we would not talk to strangers or go near the fire on the stove but how useful is fear in our mature years? That mechanism is still firing but are we not really taken care of? Those winter storms are never quite as bad as the media says and I find snow beautiful. Iran has been threatening us for years but they are Venus mahadasha and somehow everything we have feared about them has not manifested. The world seems on edge but is it the media or a dark government on edge about losing their power to create war and strife in the world? I have been trying to move beyond an astrology of fear lately. As a mundane astrologer, I could list all the hotspots of the year like the Feb. 26 Solar Eclipse with Mars conjunct Uranus, which could trigger earthquake and volcanic activity or the Total Solar Eclipse crossing the US during the daytime on August 21st and impacting Trump‘s natal ascendant at Leo 5 degrees and natal Mars at 3 degrees but why should we spend time being fearful.

Barry Rosen has been practicing Vedic astrology since 1987. He has visited and studied in India on 4 occasions and has spoken numerous times at the American Council of Vedic Astrology Conferences in Sedona, A Z since 199 9 and also the British Association of Vedic Astrologers in London since 2006. But usually the worst I imagine does not happen and the world goes on and does not fall apart and I do not think 2017 will be a major catastrophic year when things will fall apart or even 2018 will be all that bad in the absurd ways that people are fearing. If you want to worry, maybe focus on 2019-20 when Jupiter is conjunct Saturn and Ketu and Pluto but that is taking us out of the joy and wonder that could happen in our lives this year or next year and who knows what will get resolved by 2019-20? I remember 1989 was a pivotal year for the world in astrology but the Berlin wall came down peacefully and the Soviet Bloc crumbled peacefully and so maybe - just maybe - we can have a peaceful transition in 2019-20. For those of you who like to live in the future and worry big, worry about 2031-32 when Saturn goes into Rohini, which is one of those apocalyptic transits that happen every 29 years and was running when 9/11 happened in 2001. But why worry about something 14 years away? The world will continue to exist somehow. God has a plan and even when the architect is razing a building, he knows and sees the beautiful new structure that will be created. Japan and Germany in 1945 were a mess but look what has emerged today and who would have seen that in 1945? Look within. Is your survival mechanism misfiring too much? Is it serving you? Are you missing out on the small joys and wonders in the world? Playing with your kids or grandchildren? Enjoying the beauty of nature or art? Good politicians will come on go but will you be at peace. Having raved for 8 years at Bush/Cheney and finally THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

realizing it was destroying my peace, I have decided to let go about Trump. Yes, take social action to create a better world but maybe it can be more effective and real in your community by volunteering to help the poor or the elderly. That is how we pacify Saturn and fear. Make a difference by donating to charity and do volunteer work and it will have more impact than rioting - which is a real threat this summer during the Mars debilitation in July and August.

Don’t let the media fool you. The world is a wonderful place. There are good people doing good things to help humanity every day. Do not buy into the dread and confusion. The mind tends to amplify the few bad things that are happening in our world and make them seem like they are 100 times worse than they are.

As Saturn stays weak much of the year, we have to really observe fearour andirrational move outfearful of it ormind it will consume us. I our suspect is going to go into warp speed. We have to make new choices. Do we buy into our irrational fears that the politicians are going to destroy our world or do we help others and enjoy the beauty of loving and caring for

Yes, these are real concerns and we owe a better world to our future family but do not lose the precious moments of “love” and sharing and artistic creation that are part of the present moment. The future will take care of itself. Use every day to enjoy the precious things in life: take time to hug a loved one, enjoy awonderful cooked dish and see beyond the doom and gloom. Yes, we have problems ahead but God has a plan,bigger and brighter than we can imagine. Judging Progeny using the Sphuta Technique in Vedic Astrology | ALAN ANNAND

HEN a client asks “When will I have children?” or “How many children will I have?” they are already getting ahead of themselves. This is because the first and fundamental question should be, “Will I have children?”

To answer this basic question, astrologers will typically examine any and all planets that associate with or aspect the 5th house, the 5th lord and Jupiter. Depending on the influence and strength of male or female planets, they will thereby assess the prospects for male or female children. th

The Sputa Other astrologers use the concepts of bija sputa and kshetra sputa to assess the virility or fertility of a man or woman, respectively. In brief, these are two symbolic points, derived mathematically from the zodiacal positions of key planets. The calculations are as follows: For a male nativity, the bija sputa = zodiacal longitude of the Sun (man) + longitude of Venus (semen) + longitude of Jupiter (child) For a female nativity, the kshetra sputa = zodiacal longitude of the Moon (woman) + longitude of Mars (ovum) + longitude of Jupiter (child) Once calculated, the sputa should be noted by sign in the rasi. The bija sputa should be in male signs, the kshetra sputa in female signs. Reversing either detracts points rather than granting them. The sputa in question should be associated with oraspected by benefics, especially Jupiter, the karaka for children. The sputa should not be associated with or aspected by malefics, especially Saturn, which is considered a neuter. The sputa’s position should also be converted to its navamsa equivalent. Its placement should then be noted by sign within the navamsa chart. Keep score the same as with the rasi, granting or subtracting points when the sputa is in male/female signs, and associated with or aspected by benefics/malefics. Yogas do not manifest the same in all charts, nor do dasa/bhukti periods all deliver the same results. Like many other techniques, this is just one of many tools in ht e jyotishi’s toolbox. Without it, we would have one less means of analysis. With it, we have one more tool by which we might crack the mystery of karma as revealed through the birth chart. APRIL 2017

hat is known as Hindu or Vedic Astrology has its srcin in India, and is based on records that go back to 4500 B.C. The founder of this system is Parashara Muni, who lived in 1500 B.C. and was known to draw up the first personal natal horoscope. Besides this he worked on the astrology of health and instigated the indicators of longevity. His manuscripts are still carefully guarded and kept in India. Another important astrologer who lived in the same period was Seer Ranavira. He was mainly concerned with human relationships, women’s birth charts the psychological aspects of astrology. Vedic Astrology is also known as “Joytisha.” This can be interpreted as to mean light, brilliant and having to do with the realm of light. It can mean cosmic light as it reflects on the individual’s path in life in Vedic Astrology. The understanding of the divine plan (providence) or spiritual motivation plays a key role in conceiving this phenomenon (karma). Vedic Astrologers take upon themselves the task of dispersing “darkness”. As in Western Astrology real birth is considered the time when the new born baby takes its first breath and cries out. The alignment of the planets on the sidereal zodiac based on the fixed position of the stars. According to Indian philosophy the birth chart is an indicator of one’s past life karma. In one of his works Varaha Mihira mentions that the birth chart reflects the good and back actions in one’s past lives. It is important not to confuse astrology with fatalism and predestination in this respect. According to Vedic astrologer Chakrapani Ullal, a fundamental conjecture of Hindu Astrology is that planets are mere indicative (influencing) forces that warn about harmful circumstances in one’s life. It is the individual’s task to interpret these indicators and to adjust himself so as to avoid unfavorable consequences. In order for a person to make this choice and succeed in the struggle, one has to attain to divine grace and also to use one’s personal resources. Understanding astrological phenomena depends on understanding and interpreting what the planets represent. The Vedic term for planet is “Graha” which means effective or ruling humans. Planets represent “Maya” or illusions that veil the personality. It is necessary to know all the planets and to resolve them. The alignment of the planets on the natal chart reflects the powers needed by the individual to resolve the problems they indicate on the specific areas of the chart. In traditional Hindu Astrology, the planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have no part. Hindu astrologers claim that the lunar nodes reflect the energies of the trans-Saturn planets. Some modern Vedic Astrologers do in fact make use of these lately discovered planets while drawing a natal chart. However no ancient interpretations to this effect exist. It is believed that the planets reflect the divine attributes we are bestowed with by birth and reflect our spiritual potential. The planets take turns to act as emission stations and channels of celestial intelligence. Our task as humans is to interpret their stellar language and to understand the message they send to the world. The fundamental philosophy of Hindu Astrology lies in the Doctrine of Karma. The horoscope is merely a depiction of sky at the moment of birth and is indicative of what past lives have sowed and what will be reaped as a result, in other words it encodes what the future holds in store. It does not determine the future but notifies what may be. One’s foreknowledge of the energies influencing coming events may assist one to developing the needed will power so that one can avoid unfavorable circumstances. In Vedic Astrology even people born with a difference of one or two minute can have different astrological attributes.

Vedic astrology applies the sidereal zodiac, which does not calculate any difference between the signs of the zodiac and the constellations. When viewed from the earth the constellations have a very slight but constant yearly movement of with a loss of 50.25 seconds has to be reduced from the planetary longitude. The circle of the zodiac can be divided into 12 equal segments of 30°. One of the 12 constellations is placed on each of these segments. However these segments shift by 1° every 70 years against their assigned constellations because of the precession of the equinox.

Planets and stars have different meanings in astrology then they do in astronomy. For example, the Sun is a star and the Moon is a satellite of the Earth, but in astrology they are designated as planets. Essentially a planet (graha) in astrology is a celestial object that affects life on Earth. The effect of the stars on people is very diminutive, but the Sun, Moon and planets have a deep effect on human activities. Panchanga for April 2017 First column gives the English dates and next to it the names of the regional months and dates. The ending moments of Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana are given in the 24 hour clock extending to 30 hours. Of the Nityayogas, Vishkumbha, Parigha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Vyaghata, Vaidhruthi, Sula, Ganda and Atiganda are generally spurned for auspicious events and they are marked in red in the Panchanga. Vydhruti pervades from 346°40’ to 360° and Vyatipata from 213°20’ to 226°40’ of the sum of the Nirayana longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti and Vyatipata punyakaala are observed on the day when the yogas prevail for 1½ hours or more, when Sraddha is performed by the astute. These two belong to the shannavati -96- Sraddhas ordained for a householder. Considering the astronomical implications, the Sayana Vydhruti and Vyatipata days are also indicated in the Panchanga. The auspicious Amritayoga and Siddhayoga and inauspicious Maranayoga and rPabalarishtayoga come under Amirtaadiyoga scheme and are different from the Nityayogas. The Karana is the half of the Tithi. They are mainly classified as Sthira - fixed or immovable and Chara or moveable. The Chara Karanas are seven in number and the Sthira are only four. The fixed ones are inauspicious. They are Sakuni, Chatushpada, Naga and Kimsatugna. The seven movable Karanas arein their order, Bava, Baalava, Kaulava, T aitila, Gara, Vanija and Vishti (or Bhadra.) Among the movable Karanas Vishti orBhadra is considered tobe of dreadful. The forbidden Karanas are marked in red for easy identification. We have most of our religious observances pegged onto the Tithis. Pournamipooja Chandradarisana, Sankataharachaturthi Vrata, Shastivrata, Ekadasi Vrata and Pradosha are specially mentioned in the Panchanga.
