Rural Livelihood Systems OUR THOUGHTS AND LEARNINGS:
Looking at the case history of the family of the Rama Krishna, we can easily say that this can be story of everybody who is anybody in any village. They are laden with financial insecurity and there is no permanent option of income available. The financial backing available to Ram Krishna throughout, by his father and few relatives, is the only option left. The family head has to move to economic centre to earn money apart from agricultural activities. The income through agriculture isn¶t guaranteed as we saw in this case, so sticking to alternate options of income is must. Though one positive factor is that the family also considers the education of the children equally important, which often gets neglected. We saw that the family was nearly affluent with income coming from agriculture when they bought extra land, sold the land to increase the irrigational facilities usbut as we see commonly the gamble failed. This is the common story of Indian farmer which we could glance at from the given situation. The gifting of major portion of land through dowry is also a social responsibility which the farmers in the rural areas have to bear and thus a large portion of resources is lost. The sticking to other plans where he gets cheated by friends and relatives but still holds on with support of his family and his inborn talent to start new ventures and modeling himself to the needs of the ventures. As we commonly see, people fall prey to poverty due to their indecisiveness or faulty decisions influenced by foreign factors. The story was no different in this case. However the father of Ram Krishna and the wife who unlike the families in rural sectors get themselves involved in the income generation for the family in the crisis and thus assist the family head. Thus going through this case we nearly went through the cycle of events through which a family in rural area has to go in the course of generating income and maintaining the social identity and the worst case scenarios which can be built during the situation bringing an affluent family to struggle for a morsel of grain.
