7 Deadline Sins of Productivity Michael Hyatt’s Webinar Sept 26, 2017 (Notes compiled by J3 Patino) Objective: Help Busy High Achievers Have More Time, While Working Less
Introduc on Premise: Fundamental Approach to Productivity Is Broken (Bonus Giveaway for Attending: The Distraction Slayer http://freetofocus.com/distraction) ● ● ●
Modern Defini on of Produc vity = Do More, Faster, Be er in Less Time So the more successful you become, the faster you have to go. This is exhaus ng and unsustainable. Something has got to change!!
Produc vity Sin #1: You Can Manage Time There is a Law of Diminishing Returns in Work: More hours → Less me to eat, sleep and relax → Further decreases focus, health and overall produc vity. Liberating Truth: Time is fixed. But energy can flex. You can achieve more in 30 rested hours. Than 60 hours of continuous work. Action Step: End work on time tomorrow no matter what.
Produc vity Sin #2: Embrace Mul tasking Studies show that it takes workers an average of 25 minutes to resume their task a er an interrup on. Liberating Truth: You’ll accomplish more if you do one thing at a me. Action Step: Be inten onal to kill distrac ons the next me you’re working on a project. (Silent phone, close messenger, close other times)
Produc vity Sin #3: Track Tasks Obsessively There’s a huge difference between “feeling” produc ve and being “actually” produc ve. It doesn’t ma er how many tasks you checked off… what ma ers is you get the most important stuff done. Liberating Truth: 80% of your to-do list can actually be eliminated, delegated or automated Action Step: Before adding a task to your to-do list, ask first: Should it be done? Can someone else do it? Can it be automated?
Produc vity Sin #4: Ignore Disorder and Just do the Work Less clu er → increased efficiency → less stress → more headspace and focus. Liberating Truth: You will SAVE me, by stopping to get organized. Action Step: Stop to impose order on one unruly space or system this week.
Produc vity Sin #5: Expand Access (You can get more done if people can get to you) Open door policy is OKAY. But being constantly accessible is NOT okay. Because if you’re always accessible, then this means you are always available for distrac ons. Liberating Truth: It’s good to expand access, but not at the cost of people who need you the most (family, direct reports) Action Step: Make a list of people who need you the MOST.
Produc vity Sin #6: Respond Constantly But just because someone contacts you… doesn’t mean you should reply. It’s all about choosing which messages to respond to. Be inten onal. Liberating Truth: You’ll make your greatest contribu on if you respond periodically instead. Action Step: Block out of four hours of unresponsive me on your calendar.
Produc vity Sin #7 Switch Technologies. Technology is a great servant, but a terrible master. If your approach to produc vity is broken… it’s not something that technology fixed. Liberating Truth: New technology doesn’t guarantee improved produc vity. Action Step: Evaluate your approach to produc vity, rather than the devise that supports it.
