Windows: Testing and Inspection Principles of Operation RINCIPLES OF OPERATION GEM Controlled Systems Vehicles manufactured in the first part of 2002 use a GEM to control the power supply to the rear defrost grid and power window system. These vehicles will be referred to as "early build". ICM Controlled Systems Vehicles manufactured later in 2002 use the instrument cluster module (ICM) to control the power supply to the rear defrost grid and power window system. These vehicles will be referred to as "late build". ower Window Operation The power window system operates under the control of the accessory delay relay. For early build vehicles, the GEM will energize the relay to provide power to the power window system. For late build vehicles, the ICM will energize the relay to provide power to the power window system. ower Window Control The power window system can be operated from the left front or from the power window switch located on each door panel. The left front (master) power window switch has two modes of operation for the left front power window, manual and auto. All other windows operate in the manual mode only. Manual mode will move the window downward until the switch is released. The left front power window will operate in the manual mode when the left front power window switch is pressed to the first detent position. Auto mode provides the one-touch down (OTD) feature for the left front power window. The OTD function allows the left front power window to be completely lowered when the master window adjust switch is pressed to the second detent position and then released. The power window system will only operate if: - The igniti ignition on is is in the RUN or ACC ACC posi positio tion n or - The acce accesso ssory ry delay delay featur featuree is in in the active active mode mode.. ccessory Delay Power For early build vehicles, the GEM controls the accessory delay feature and power supply to the power windows through the accessory delay relay. For late build vehicles, the ICM controls the accessory delay feature and power supply to the power windows through the accessory delay relay. The relay is activated by applying a ground signal directly to one side of the coil and deactivated by removing the signal. eated Backlite and Mirror Timer For early build vehicles, when the rear window defrost switch is pressed, a 10 minute timer is started and the GEM energizes the heated backlite relay to provide battery voltage to the heated backlite grid and heated outside rear view mirror (if equipped). For late build vehicles, when the rear window defrost switch is pressed, a 10 minute timer is started and the ICM energizes the heated backlite relay to provide battery voltage to the heated backlite grid and heated outside rear view mirror (if equipped).The rear window grid wires heat up to defrost the rear window or melt accumulated snow or ice. EM Controlled Functions The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is used in early build vehicles. It receives input information and performs an output to a majority of electronically controlled features features of the vehicle. The GEM constantly monitors these systems and reports a concern in the form of a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The DTC can be retrieved with a diagnostic tool through the vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC). The GEM control system has two modes of operation, the normal operating mode and tester-dependent diagnostics mode. The normal operating mode of the GEM detect errors and changes the GEM control strategy. There is no w arning lamp for the GEM; therefore, a DTC concern w ill direct you to the GEM diagnostic procedures. The GEM can only detect open circuit/short to GND faults when energizing a load, and short to battery faults when attempting to energize a load. CM Controlled Functions The instrument cluster module (ICM) is used in late build vehicles. It controls the rear window defrost grid and heated mirrors (if equipped) by controlling the state of the rear window defrost/mirror relay. When the rear window defrost switch is pressed, the ICM will activate the heated grid relay. When the heated grid relay is active, both the rear window defrost grid and heated mirror elements will be energized.
