Besaran pokok adalah besaran yang satuannya telah ditetapkan terlebih dahulu. Berdasarkan kesepakatan secara internasional maka ditetapkanlah tujuh (7) besaran fisis menurut sistem satuan internasional atau “ Le Systeme International d’Unites”. 3. Satuan dan Konversi a. Awalan satuan Untuk mempermudah atau menyederhanakan nilai-nilai yang sangat besar atau yang sangat kecil sekaligus pembanding nilai satuan dalam suatu besaran maka digunakan awalan. Misalnya 1 km sama dengan 1000 m. Maka dalam notasi eksponensialnya ditulis 1000 m = 103 m, Kemudian 1 cm sama dengan 1/100 m, dalam notasi eksponensialnya eksponensialnya ditulis 1 cm = 10-2 m. Angka tersebut menunjukan panjang objek yang kita ukur 2) Jangka Sorong Jangka sorong merupakan alat ukur panjang yang memiliki batas ketelitian sampai dengan 0,1 mm. Jangka sorong dapat digunakan untuk mengukur diameter bola, diameter dalam tabung, dan kedalaman lubang. Skala utama tertulis pada batang jangka sorong. Pada rahang sorong (geser) diberi skala sebanyak 10 bagian dengan panjang 9 mm yang disebut skala nonius. Jadi, setiap satu skala nonius panjangnya 9 mm atau 0,9 mm.

Garis skala nonius yang berimpit dengan skala utama (membentuk garis lurus) adalah garis pada angka 7. Karena nilai ketelitian jangka sorong 0,1 mm maka nilai kelebihannya adalah 7 x 0,1 mm = 0,7 mm = 0,07 cm. Jadi, jangka sorong pada gambar 5 menunjukkan nilai 2,3 cm + 0,07 cm = 2,37 cm. 3) Mikrometer Sekrup Mikrometer sekrup adalah alat ukur panjang yang ketelitiannya paling tinggi. Mikrometer sekrup mempunyai ketelitian 0,01 mm sehingga cocok untuk mengukur antara lain tebal kertas, diameter kawat email, dan tebal kain.

Pada skala putar terlihat garis skala yang berimpit dengan garis mendatar pada skala tetap adalah garis pada angka 12. karena nilai ketelitian mikrometer sekrup 0,1 mm, maka nilai kelebihannya adalah 12 x 0,01 mm = 0,12 mm. Jadi, hasil pengukuran mikromeetr sekrup pada Gambar 5.4. menunjukkan nilai 44 mm + 0,12 mm = 4,12
