Locking Screws Most 98 type Military Mausers have locking screws that lock the trigger guard screws in place. The two figures to the left show the positions of the locking screws.

23) Rotate the handguard 90 degrees either direction.

26) Using a punch, tap out the sear pin.

32) Install the trigger pin and with a punch, tap in the trigger pin.
33) Install the sear spring.

34) Position trigger assembly on receiver as shown in figure 34.
35) Using quick clamps, hold the trigger assembly in place so your hands can be left free to tap in the sear pin.

36) Insert the sear pin and using a punch lightly tap it back into place.
37) Lift the rear sight and turn handguard sideways and install as shown in figure 37.

38) Rotate the handguard so it is positioned as shown in figure 38.
39) Snap the handguard into place.

40) Lower the rear site.

42) Tighten the rear sight screw.
43) Insert the barreled receiver into the rifle stock.

44) Slide the lower band onto the barrel. Make certain to have the sling loop on the left side of the carbine.
45) Slide the lower band into place.

46) Install the band spring.
47) Using a quick clamp hold the band spring in place so your hands can be free to install the forward band.

48) Slide the forward band onto the barrel.
49) Tap the forward band into place. Using a hickory hammer handle is a great non-marring tool for tapping parts into place. Figure 49 shows the forward band and the band spring engaged and locked.

50) Replace the trigger guard. Depress the magazine follower and insert the bolt.
51) Install the forward guard screw.

52) Tighten the forward guard screw.
53) Install the rear guard screw.

55) Slide the cleaning rod into the carbine.

56) Hand tighten the cleaning rod.
57) Install the magazine floor plate and follower.

58) Hook the front of the magazine floor plate into the groove in the front of the magazine well and then lock the magazine floor plate into place.
59) Insert the bolt into the receiver.
