Foot rcflexology has been known as a key to longevity in China and Japan since antiquity and historical evidence suggcsts that it may have originated in ancient Egypt. After ycars in the closet of medical knowledge it is finally receiving attention as a worth!- component of traditio~ial Oriental ~neclicine Foot reflexology is a t!-pe of treatment altogether- different from acupuncture, niosa cautery, finger pressure or "trigger point" treatment and other forms of Oriental medicine. It is a physical treatment, outstanding in that it can help heal the body and enhance its functions through not only the nervous system but also the lymphatic system and the extremely important circulatory system. Foot reflexology in some cases ~ e g a t e sthe need for drugs s o l u t i o ~ ~from s the and surgical cperaticns--pzssive-role instead utilizes the body's natupatient's standpoint-ahd ral curative abilities. Foot reflexology is highly effective in clarifying the importance of blood circulation, and above all in promoting efficient blood transport by veins and arteries. This considerably enhances its abillty to purge the body of waste matter and contamination-a key point. Foot reflexology requires the steady, systematic massaging
of reflex areas from the sole of the foot to a point lOcrn above the knee. The simplest way is to do it is with your own hands, or with a massage stick or a massage board. Only a short time is required for each daily treatment. I'eople who are extremely busy, i l l , or unable to move about freely can get effective results with the Shape-Up Roller, a rernarltable electric device. Foot reflexology boasts an impressive recnrd of effectiveness a s a treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, liver ailments, and Parltinson's disease, and has proven surprisingly effective in curing many chronic diseases. Mr. Kuan's book is entitled "Ashi no Yogore (Chindenbutsu) ga Manbyo no Genin datta", meaning that the cause of all kinds of illnesses, by his experience, was "contamination" in the feet. In Japanese yogore means dirt, filth, soil, spots, stains, and contamination, depending on the context, and chindenbutsu is used to mean sediment, deposits, settlings, dregs, lees, and so on. What M;. Kuan is referring to is hardening from tissue degeneration and the accumulation of acidic crystals such as lactic acid, an organic acid norrr,ally present in the blood. What to call it in lay English is an e Kuan's chindexhutsu plays arbitrary judgment, but s i ~ c Mr. a villainous role I refer to it in this book a s "ccntamination".
Five days after my fiftieth birthday, a s I began the series of push-ups I'd been doing daily for 25 years, I felt a strange tingling in the fingers of both hands. I'd had bursitis once, so I was tempted to believe the sudden tingling signaled an imminent recurrence. Or perhaps it was from a stiff neck, I thought. X-rays disclosed that the third and fourth vertebrae in my neck were rubbing together, probably the result of a shock or an injury a t the base of my spine during my youth, doctors said. I was placed on a rehabilitation regimen of the same kind prescribed for whiplash victims: about cen minutes a day of having my head raised and lowered in traction. My conditior, appeared to worsen. My hips and back ached all day, every day. I had such difficulty walking, during cold weather in particular, that on some days I almost turned back home soon after leaving for the station. I couldn't run a t all, and 1 had so little control over my legs that walking down a flight of stairs was nearly terrifying. If there was a hzndrail I gripped it like a lifeline. My fingers continued to tingle, and worse than that, the muscles in both forearms turned into stiff, painful rods. I also had a painful knot in my upper back. Writing-what I've done for a living since my teensbecame a sort of self-torture. If that sounds bad, living it was agonizing. My tingly fingers had such difficulty gripping objects that I constantly dropped things and often lost things. When I dined out I 15
ordered dishes such as curried rice that I could eat with just a fork. This condition continued for nearly a full year until fate intervened one day in October 1985. hly fiancee and I were visiting her mother, with whom she was taking a walk while I browsed through books in stalls arrayed before a department store. I noticed that inside the entranceway to the store someone was demonstrating an electric motor-driven foot roller with a fabric cover. I placed my stockinged feet on it for a few minutes and was amazed by how good it made me feel. My fiancee and her mother arrived as I was using it, tried it themselves, and were as impressed as I was. Through its sales agent I become acquainted Mr. Yo-MO Kuan, the author of this book. Since my arrival in Japan a s a student in 1957 I had often heard and read about traditional Chinese medicine, and was fully receptive to the observations and advice of Mr. Kuan. At our first meeting he applied thumb and finge;'pressure to various points on my hand and arm, and then diagnosed my problem a s residing in the area of the sciatic nerve. He confidently said I could recover fully, and arranged for me to receive t r e a t m e ~ l sa t a foot rzflexology clinic in Tokyo. At the time, I wanted very much to take my fiancee to California to visit my terminally ill mother, t%en nearly 88, but because of my condition I didn't feel capable of making an overseas trip and I was anxious that it might cause problems while I was abroad. So I gladly followed Mr. Kuan's suggestion that I receive foot reflexology therapy. Over a period of five or six weeks until late December 1985 I made about a dozen visits to the foot therapy clinic, ar,d the results greatly exceeded my hopes. By the time I departed for
the United States near the end of 1985 I had far less pain, could work better, and could walk properly and with much more confidence. I dare say I was probably also a more cheer-till person; however stoic one may try to be, persistent pain is a trying thing to live with. 'Traditional Chinese medicine is a s old as Chinese civilization and certain Chinese health-related techniques may go back a s far a s 1,000 B. C. or even earlier. Yet, despite the centuries-long history of intercourse between China and Western nations, traditional Chinese medicine has not been widely known in the Western world. This is somewhat ironic. Chinese cuisine, conversely, has been popular for decades throughout the world and especially in the Chinatowns of certain major cities. Chinatowns are also the places where their non-residents are most likely to encounter Chinese herbal medicine shops, with their odd-looking dried roots and herbs, exotic shavings, curious things in bottles, and whathave-you. Perhaps few Westerners would consider these things appealing to look a t and no doubt fewer still would readily accord them a role in their personal health maintenance. Moreover, Western doctors have not vigorously embraced Chinese medicine and' it does not appear that the Chinese themselves have made any major sustained effort to disseminate its teachings. As a fairly close observer of cultural trends evolving between the East and the West, I believe that traditional Chinese medicine will steadily establish a place for itself in Western society. I recall that in the early 1960's when people in New York City asked what kind of food I had eaten while living in Japan, they bridled, gasped, and made horrified faces when I described such favorites of mine a s tofu, sushi,

and sashimi. How times have changed. I'm certain that for years a t least a few of them have discovered the pleas~lreof eating such delicacies a s sushi, just a s I did during my student days in Japan. International travel, mass media, and changing consumer preferences inevitably erode certain prejudices and preconceived notions. In time, Westerners will develop a lively interest in traditional Chinese medicine and health maintenance techniques. Not the least of all, Tirestern medical professionals will explore traditional Chinese medicine and many among them will apply those of its techniques that they deem compatible with Western medicine. In Japan, this precedent has already been set in regard to foot reflexology " . a s advocated by Yo-MO Kuan. A hospital in Tokyo has arranged to have one of his specialists commute to it on a regular weekly basis to administer foot reflexology massages to certain patients for whom Western medicine alone had not produced a cure. In fact, I have been told that the wife of a Japanese doctor in Tokyo regularly receives foot reflexology massages from Mr. Kuan. As a layman pretending to no special knowledge in the field of medicine, I can not arrogate to myself any right to make Nostradamus-like predictions about the futl~recourse of events in the world of medicine. T h a t is best left to the highly trained medical professionals in both worlds, East and West. I have a notion, though, that someday the world will see Western medicine and traditional Oriental medicine converge and achieve a t least something akin to compatibilityand perhaps even a synthesis. Does it sound too far fetched? Until the late 1960's when Chinese acupuncture first made a telling impact in the United i

States, it had been largely unheard of in the West. Yet by 1971 it was already being applied in America to certain Western medical practices. Witness the increasing attention paid to ginseng, the root grown in parts of China and Korea for- millennia. If you lived in Japan, as I do, you might be startled by the widespread faith placed in such ancient techniques as pressure-point therapy (shiatsu), nox xi bust ion (kyu), and acupuncture (hari). Even the small hospital near in its rehabilitation room, on my office has an acup~~ncturist duty every day. And every day he is very busy attending to his patients. An appointment with him must be arranged much farther in advance than an appointment with the resident internist. This is not a disaffirmation of Western medical technicl~ies. Rather, it points to a continuing affirmation of one typical japanese neighborhood's faith in----in this case-acupuncture. Many of the acupuncturist's patients are referred to him by the doctors a t the hospital. If I may make one more broad observation, it is this: that foot reflexology is on the threshhold of a great breakthrough ----not a boom, a breakthrough. Booms come and go. They iise, rise, rise, then crest, plateau out, and often the focus of the boom completely vanishes. T h a t isn't foot reflexology, in the Chinese tradition. Chinese foot reflexology a s taught by Yo-MO Kuan has endured for no fewer than two thonsand years. During this century foot reflzxology has been accorded random and less-than-deserving recognition in the United States, but it appears to be gaining ground. All it needs is a powerful impetus b e h i ~ dit, a driving force. Yo-MO Kuan has given it that impetus in Japan, where he has successfully treated a 19
great number of patients, including a former Cabinet minister and other prominent members of the government. I sincerely hope he will succeed in making foot reflexology known to millions more throughout the world, for I know many people who have benefited from the foot reflesology he teaches. I rnyself have gained great relief from his foot reflexology method and will continue to use it regularly. Thus do I present herein, with a strong conviction, my English version of the original text in Japanese by Yo-MO Kuan. For thousands of years it has been known that the feet play an important part in maintaining human health, a s reflected in the ancient Chinese expressions "Aging begins with the feet" and "Fatigue goes to the feet." We have all had the experience of exhaustion and getting tired, swollen feet after long hours of stand-up work. Doctors and scholars in many lands and eras have recognized the feet a s being the key to health, and in our times jogging and walking have gained strong popularity a s simple health-related techniques. Recently, an increasing number of people have advanced from the notion that "strengthening the feet ar,d hips promotes health" and have taken notice of the fact that stimulating the soles of the feet helps maintain health and cure illness. People a r e flocking t o my clinics in both.Taiwan and Japan requesting instruction in therapy applied to the soles of the feet. Since co~ningt c Japan, in fact, I have been touring the counti-y with barely time to sleep to teil thousands of people about the wondrous wellsprir~gof health hidden in the soles of the feet-or more specifically, from lOcm above the knee on down to the soles. Among the many to whom I've demonstrated this therapy a r e some who came out with a book called "This is the Foot Massage Way to Health'' after only two or three hours of my Instruction. I had to marvel a t the brazenness of anyone who 22
could base a book on such scant "knowledge"----if it can be called that-with peoples' health and lives in the balance. Iieaciing their text, I franl.rly fc!t anything but admiration. I hey con?pletely onlitted the important cluestions of why massaging the feet is good for thc htlalth and why massaging the soles of the feet is itself alone an effective health treatment. Such sham approaches ~vould reduce foot massage therapy to a passing fancy, and its true appeal would be lost o n people who would instead feel a needless anxiety about it. My patients said, "Mr. I

On the occasion of a lecture trip tc Nagoya I had just arrived and entered my hotel room when my phone rang. Wondering who it could possibly be, I was surprised to hear the anxious voice of a Mr. Y saying, "We'd like you back in Tokyo right away." I realized it was a matter of considerable concern. "You can't be serious," I said. "I just now arrived from Tokyo." In fact, I'd just unlocked my hotel room's door. "It's serious," said Mr. Y. "Someone is suffering severe abdominal pains, and in a few days he has to go abroad, no matter what. It's a crisis. We'd most earnestly like you to come, Mr. Kuan, so will you please do so?" Helping the suffering is my sincere desire, but I was deluged with requests for foot massage treatments and Iectures to the point where even three of me wouldn't have been enough. And I was already in Nagoya. I was about to say "It's impossibie" when Mr. Y said, "The request is from a famous persorl, and he can't change his schedi~led participation in an international conference." Even to a person a s unconversant in politics a s myself, the important nature of the conference was clear: it involved the affairs of the nation. I quickly concluded my lecture and made haste for Tokyo. My patient explained his condition, commenced treatment, and was so well within a few days that his illness almost seemed to have been a fiction. He left for abroad a s if nothing 24
had ever been bothering him, ancl was able to attend the conference. What follo~vedwas his commit~nentto treatment whenever he had time, with the result that he fully recovered from the inflamed knec-joints he'd long suffered from. "il'hat has made me healthy is foot massage." he told his w i f e - and he has been very assertive about telling people ;it rng, lectures a s well to take advantage of foot massage.
As you may have guessed, I personall!- became healthy as a result of foot massage. During World War 11, I contracted infiltration of the lrlngs and dysentery while I was still nineteen years old. For a considerable period I easily caught colds when the the seasons changed. At that time I was a conscripted soldier in the Japanese Imperial Army and w:ts stationed in Yokosulia, a base familiar to many U. S. military personnel. My illness prevented me from being sent into action, so a t the end of the war I returned safely to my native Taiwan. Long years of eating poorly during and after the war had weakened me and I was troubled by headaches and faulty hearing. Home again, a t last, and wishing to return to my normal state of health, I tried a number of health techniques, studied human anatomy, received il~struction in Oriental medicine and traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and became aware that the source of Oriental medicine is sokushindo ("heart-of-the-foot" method). I concluded that sokushindo holds the most important key to human health. I began by analyzing my feet carefully, experimenting, and massaging them to determine the proper way to health. The 25
resulting knowledge is what I have advocated to this day. From 7 a. m. to 11 p. n ~ I. eat moder-ately and occasionally rest a bit, and I never tire. At one time I was somewhat overweight, but now my weight is correct for my height. I enjoy my meals very much and am in robust health. By massaging my feet myself I restored health to my entire body. I then set about applying my technique to people with all kinds of symptoms of illness. All told, I have treated over 1,000 patients with a total of over 10,000 foot massages, encountering various emotional reactions and anxieties during the massage treatments. The examples I shall introduce herein are all taken from my experience in Japan.

A Mr. H, age 41, who had been active in sports during his college days, had been having pains in his head and back for eight years and had persistent diarrhea. Pressure pains on his left eye. and deteriorated vision were interfering with his work, he szid, and upon examining him I found hard luinps in the reflex areas for his neck, kidneys, large intestine, knees, and spinal cord. Massaging the lumps produced no pair: for the first three days, but on the fourth day Mr. H cried out loudly and was unable to sit still. He observed on the fifth day, however, that "The headaches and the pressure on my left eye have stopped and I can see clearly." After ten days his neck pains were gone, his head felt refreshed, and he felt good on awakening in the morning. 26

In 1984 I was approached b!- a 2l-~~ea1--olci patient from Kyoto who had suffered fro111111-onchialasthnla since early in life and from atopic dermatitis for the psecedi~igfour years. 'The result was a body covered with blisters that caused a maddening itch. A severe rash, blisters extending all the way to the soles of the feet, spasl~ls,and incessant coughing were the other serious symptoms. T h e patient was depressed and cheerless, and had hard lumps in reflex areas for the adrenal gland, urinary gland, respiratory organs, and hormone-producing organs. The lumps caused severe pain when I applied even the slightest pressure. Even when I reduced the pressure the patient said it was excruciating, but wanted to bear with it so as recover as quickly a s possible. While using the Molded Rock Massage Board (see page 94) a t home over three times a day, the patient received foot therapy for ten days. By that time the blisters had begun to disappear and the coughing had stopped. By about the twelfth day the rash too had vanished and the pain had subsided. In one month the patient was able to return cheerfully to a normal work routine.

What makes the heart so important is its pivotal role a s the linchpin of the circulatory system. Blood that doesn't circulate serves no purpose. With its pulsations the heart circulates the body's blood-but how? The heart maintains the harmony of the body a s a universe itself, influenced by invisible cosmic energy waves that radiate outward a t the rate of eighteen per minute. That may sound like so much gibberish ---invisible waves and whatnot----but in fact it is well substantiated aild the waves produce visible phenomena. Consider the rippling surface of sea. Ripples appear even without a wind, and in each one-minute interval the sea's gentle waves lap the shore eighteen times. Sea water in the form of waves thus confirms the existence of cosmic energy waves. When the human body receives these cosmic energy waves, i t too produces eighteen reactions in each orie-minute perioci. Thus is the respiratory movement carried out by the lungs in one minute. The cosmic energy of the waves is Yang and the movement of the lungs is Yin. The combination of Yang and Yin generates heat. Upon receiving the eighteen energy waves (Yang) the body's lungs (Yin) move eighteen times. When you add these two you obtain a body energy value (temperature) of 36 degrees centigrade. When cosmic waves act upon the lungs, the lungs in turn promote respiration. Neat generated during this process is supplicci to the heart to help it palpitate. 'I'he heart is indicated as having 36°C' body temperature, and double the figure 36 results in 72, the number of pulse-beats per minute. I3ody temperature is also energy. When it reaches the heart, pulsations begin. Under conditions requiring total energy consumption, the organs function so as to obtain twice the energy output. And how many times does the heart beat? Twice 36 times, or 72 times per minute. Thus does blood circulation begin. Everything in the universe is a part of it, receiving its influence. The human body receives cosmic waves, breathes, and gives movement to the heart. In the course of my studies over the years I have evinced my own theory concerning the energy base that enables human beings to breathe. Research on this subject thus far has rested solely on scientific approaches that increasingly draw upon advanced technology. T o research living things, I believe, requires more than scientific tenets alone. Living things should be studied with a pai-alle: approach placing dual emphasis on both science and philosophy. As a living organism the human body is a part of the entire universe. As such, it is inevitably influenced by universal forces. T h a t is, it is acted upon by the universal gravitational pull exerting itself on all things within the realm of nature. Within the seeming void of the boundless universe a r e gaseous vapors and a rhythmic movement of the celestial bodies. The rhythm occurs a t regular intervals, eighteen per minute. Rhythmic waves from the universe enter the human
body through the nose and set the lobes of the lungs in motion, also eighteen times per minute a t regular intervals. This offsets the act of breathing. Added together, the eighteen waves moving in the universe and the eighteen moving in the body total thirty-six----the tenlperaturt of the hvrnan body. This body temperature provides the body with energy, drives the heart, and conimences the cycle of blood circulation., Double the body temperature is 72--the number of human pulsebeats per minute. When people die their breathing gradually weakens and their body tenlperature gradually decreases. Finally both their respiratory organs and their heart cease to function. This is because the lungs no longer receive the rhythmic waves from the universe. Thus do the life functions cease. Now let's examine the human respiratory condition resulting fron; the phenomenon I've just described. When a newborn infant enters the world gasping for air, the attending pediatrician grasps its ankles and slaps its bottom to stiniulate its heart. Waves from the universe then enter through the infant's nose, and respiration and blood circulation begin. If we zccept this thecry, it follows that we must not interrupt the rhyth:ii of waves from the universe. If iluclear tests or-even more irightening-a nuclear war were to aiter the wavecount froxi 18 to 19 or 20 per minute, the human body would reach a high-fever temperature. This would result in the extinction of the human race. Thus we must protect our environment, ensure the normal pattern of universal waves, and abandon all thoughts of ever conducting a nuclear war. When we are asleep the blood transported from the heart 33

goes to the head in a larger volume than when we are standing up. This is because the blood, drawn downward by gravitational pull, has difficulty moving toward the feet while we are in a reclining position. Thus it can be difficult to fall asleep, and insufficient sleep can result. Man's ingenious solution to this problem is the pillow, used to elevate the head and thrust it out from under the bedding. This conforms to the principle of "cold head, warm feet" by which blood flow to the feet is facilitated. The left-hand side of the Chinese calligraph for "pillow" is the symbol for "tree," an indication of ancient Chinese wisdom that saw the ideal pillow a s being made of wood or bamboo because they do not retain heat. A hard pillow applies pressure to the arteries in the neck and prohibits the excessive flow of blood to the head. A pillow that gives off no heat cools the head and accelerates blood flow to the feet.

If I were to tell you that the soles of the feet conceal such viscera as the stoniach and the liver, and such organs as the eyes and the ears, you'd probably gasp in disbelief. Yet it is a fact, and evidence shows that since long ago applying pressure to the soles of the feet has cured many types of illness. A bad stomach, for example, can be cured by applying pressure to the reflex areas ir! the soles of t h t feet that correspond to the stomach. A 'headache can be cured by massaging the toes through regular daily massaging of the reflex area corresponding to the head. The reaction to the pressure----the pain the presence of deposits-also ret-eals the source of an ailment. lLRefle>iarea" refers to those parts of the body having a heavy concentration of nerves and to their close relationship to various parts of the body. If we press and massage nerve reflex areas, the physiological iunct i ~ of n these reflex areas and their related organs is stjmulated, blood circulation in~proves,and health can return.
* The history of reflex areas Five thousand years years ago there evolved in C h i ~ ~a a therapy known a s kanshiho (the foot diagnosis method) based or, the reflex area principle. It is well known among Chinese that in ancient China this kanshiho treatment was an important key to health that was based in the legs and that 36
it shared prominence with acupuncture and moxibustion. Two thousznd years ago in China, during the Han era, a system of academic treatment developed under the name sokushindo ("heart-of-the-foot" method). In 1582, in Central Europe, a Dr. Adams and a Dr. Atatis introduced a pressure therapy for the foot, and about the same time a Dr. Ball announced a treatment for physiological organs based on pressure point treatment. Mentioned in Dr. Ball's report is the cure by foot pressure therapy of the neuralgia that afflicted the Florentine sculptor Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571). History cites yet another fascinating example. Whe11 Jarnes A. Garfield, the twenty-seventh President of the United States, was slashed by a Icnife-wielding tvould-bc assassin in Septenlber 1581, the pain was quelled with pressure applied to his feet. Indeed, it was the research of yet another American, Dr. 'CV. Fitzgerald, that brought international recognition to this treatment handed down for thousands of years. Studies show that if the human body is divided into five vertical sections each 011the left and on the right, the organs lying within each section or zone have mutually influential relationships with those parts of the hands and feet also lying within the same zone. When announced, this basis for treatment was mlled "reflex area massage." Its influence spread in Europe and thence throughout the world, aild in 1916 Dr. E. F. Bowers named it the "reflex area cure." A medical book published by the U. S. government in 1925 clearly recognizes the effectiveness of this form of treatment, and later it was taught a t numerous places established for that purpose. Since reflex area therapy was tnus introduced by learned 37
doctors over seventy years ago, it has gained considerable popularity elsewhere. In Taiwan, Fr. Josef Engster has played a key role in increasing the awareness that illnesses can be cured through foot reflexology--reflex area therapy focusing on the feet. In both Europe and America as well this treatment has steadily gained acceptance, and in Japan it has recently been imitated with various therapies, but to no avail. Imitators have not based their approaches on a proper understanding of the principles that I am presenting in the book in the sincere hope that they will help promote better health for a s many people as possible.
* Reflex area therapy conforms to the principle
of
the human body Let's take a look a t the reflex areas of the foot. The illustration shows only the reflex areas for the soles of the left foot and the right foot. The big toe conta!.ns the reflex areas for such important functions as those of the trigeminal nerve, the brain, the pituitary gland, and the nose. Above the arch are the reflex areas for the lung and the thyroid gland and below it are the reflex areas for the stomzch, the adrenal glands, the spleen, the large intestine, the small intestine, the bladder, and the anus. In the middle of the heel is the reflex area for the genital glands. I wish to p o i ~ tout that the reflex areas are located in places that naturally conform to physiological principles. In the arch of the foot are reflex areas for the stomach and the duodenum and other organs of in the digestive system. Even if you walk soon after eating, these reflex areas in the arch will not be stimulated or affected. Conversely, the center of 38
the heel contains the reflex area for the genital glands. Every time you walk, weight comes down on the heel and the genital glands arc stimulated.
* The three reasons to use reflex area therapy The human body divides into seven major reflex areas': the head, the ears, the face, the nose, the hands, the body clown t o the knees, and the body from the knees down to the feet. Each of them has its own clearly identifiable pressure points. My extensive studies of reflex areas for the entire body have been extremely resultful and have led me to realize t h a t only the reflex areas for the foot are effective for reflex area therapy. One good reason for using reflex area therapy on the feet is that it results in no side effects a t all. T o effect cures by using reflex areas on the face and the head requires special techniques. Even people who practice them for lo11g periods occasionally make mistakes and can cause facial paralysis or other unfortunate after-effects. Massaging any part of the feet improves their blood circulation and their distance fro111 the heart negates the possibility of harmful effects. The second reason to use reflex area therapy on the feet is that they are extremely important to blood circulation and can reveal any abnormalities in the body faster than any other part. The feet contain many capillaries, the tiny blood vessels linking arteries and veins. In our youth, a s we ran through open fields, the contact between the soles of our feet and the ground provided natural stimulation for various reflex areas in the feet. Such stimulatio~ipromctes blood circulation in the 40
feet, the most problematical parts of the body in circulatory terms and the locus of great contamination. As human society began to put on shoes and later ride about in vehicles, the reflex areas for the soles of the feet received less and less stin~ulation.This impedes blood circulation and diminishes the important role of the feet in helping maintain health. 'Thus it is necessary to stimulate the reflex zones in the soles of the feet. T h e third good reason for using foot massage therapy is that anyone properly instructed can do it easily. An elderly gentleman I know massages his feet when he watches television, massaging the big toes during the news and the arches during dramas. A couple I know, married over twenty years and wishing to enliven their relationship, recovered both their health and their rapport by massaging each other's feet every day. You too, on your own or together with someone else, can easily do foot massage no matter where you are. T h a t is indeed important, for a therapy that cannot be continued cannot be effective.
* Reflex area pain identifies the problem Depending on where you massage the soles of your feet, d case of a Mr. you may feel intense pain. This calls to m i ~ the A, a trading company employee who suffered sharp, sudden chest pains that were becoming unbearable. T h e doctor he consulted found arrhythmia and diagnosed the condition a s heart disease. Mr. A was given a mound of medicine that he began taking, only to suffer diarrhea, dizzy spells, and anorexia (loss of 4l
appetite). His severe chest pains continued. When I massaged his feet slightly above the arches I found nodes that caused severe pain a s I applied pressure around them. "Your heart is normal," I explained to Mr. A. "What's bad is your adrenal glands." When he asked how I could determine that without an examination of any kind, I replied, "The sole of the foot contains reflex areas connected to every organ in the body, and the reflex area for your heart produced no abnormal reaction. But I did get an abnormal reaction from the reflex areas for your kidneys, and especially the adrenal glands. I'll press them now to see what happens." When I did he nearly flew off his chair, so intense was the pain. His problem wasn't his heart itself, but a shortage of adrenalin secretions in the adreno-cortical hormones (ACH) that stimulate the heartbeat. Every day I massaged the reflex areas for the adrenal glands, the kidney, the ureter, and the bladder. After a week his chest pains were gone, and within a month he had recovered. Thus do the various reflex areas in the foot receive messages of illness in the body. Even if you haven't yet fallen ill, the soles of t h e feet get the message. If you respond to the message with c ~ n t i n u e dfoot massage until the pain subsides, you will get weil without question.

Conversely, some people feel no pain no matter where I press. It's all very well and good i f people proclaim their complete health, but anyone can have contamination deposits that conceal ill health or its forebodings even if they appear well. Most people who feel no pain from pressure on reflex areas have skin too hard and thick to react to it. The thick layer may be caused by extreme contamination. If such people feel no pain, I massage the thick skin until it softens, and then press very hard until it hurts. If any part of the body is bad, the feet will get the message. Even if no illness is evident, the feet get the message anyway. If you massage your feet before they begin to hurt and break down the contamination, you can acert illness.
* Massaging the ankles heals the wrist
As I mentioned, you've gotten the message when applying pressure to your reflex areas produces strong pain. In fact, some people cry out in pain no matter where I press the soles of their feet. "Everywhere hurts," they'll say. "I've had it! My

This is the essential form of Yin and Yang, the fundamental basis for considering human health. in terms of nature, the sky is Yang and the earth is Yin, the sun ar:d the light a r e Yang and the moon, darkness, u7ater and cold a r e Yin. T h e south is Yang and the north is Yin, the left is Yang and the right is Yin. Seen from the standpoint of the human body, the skin and muscles a r e Yang and the internal organs a r e Yin. A s for the six viscera and six entrails, the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, kidneys and myocardium a r e Yin, and the gall bladder, small intestine, stomach, large intestine, bladder and sansho (the ingresdegress points of three vital organs) are Yang. 45
As for the front and back of the body, the spine is Yang and the abdomen is Yin. When divided into upper and lower parts, and taking the diaphragm as a divider, the upper part is Yang and the lower part is Yin. When we combine these two perceptions, the heart is the Yang of the Yang, the lungs the Yin of the Yang, the kidney the Yin of the Yin, the liver the Yang of the Yin, and the spleen the innermost Yin of the Yin. As for gender, males are Yang and fe~nalesare Yin. It has been said recently that when bodies of males are found floating in the sea or a lake, they face downward, while those of females face upward. This is a consequence of the tendency of the male's back to face heavenward, a Yang characteristic. We see, then, that all things can be divided into Yin and Yang. Neither Yin nor Yang exists absolutely. The inner Yin is protected by the outer Yang and the outer Yang is influenced by the inner Yin. Only if both are in balance do things go well. It is said, for example, that the Yin spirit goes downward and when it touches bottom it turns back upward. Conversely, the Yang spirit rises and when it touches the top it turns back downward. Raindrops fall from the sky to the earth, turn into vapor and rise into the air. In consideri~gthis natural phenomenon, we can cnderstznd that only the successful interchange of Yin-Yang allows nature to flourish without dry spells. As regards the human body, the head is Yang and the feet are Yin. If the hands and the feet fail to receive the brain's commands, they cannot move; and if sensations transmitted to them from the brain are not correctly transmitted to the brain, health deteriorates. If the blood fails to circulate 46
evenly throughout the inner and outer Yin and Yang and thus cannot supply energy to the entire body, problems ensue. You get chills, feel flushed, become out of balance throughout \,our bod),, and inevitably develop an illness. In the Yin-Yang context, illness is the result of a faulty interchange of Yin and Yang spirits on which the interchange is based. T o keep the Yin and Yang relationship in equilibrium and raise it to a higher level, and then maintain its equilibrium a t that level, is the key to good health. Foot massage is a very rational way to cure illness by helping maintain the Yin-Yang equilibrium. Foot massage stin~ulatesthe peripheral nerves, improves blood circulation, and normalizes the organs' functions by stimulating the Yang and bringing out the functions of the Yin. It is a method that conforms to the principle of the natural curative ability of the body.
* The five principles expressed by the body's circulation Since ancient times Chinese sages have advocated "the theory of the nlovement of the five elements," a system of dividing cosmic phenomena into five types: wood, fire. earth, metal, and Water is enriched by its downward flow, fire burns as it rises upward, wood regains its shape soon after being,bent, metal spreads across leather when hammered, and earth grows crops. These are the movements of the five elements. All five complement one another and conflict with one another, constantly changing the shape of everything and circulating eternally. Briefly, this is the essence of "the theory of the movement of the five elements."

nlicroscope you can see its serums and hematocytes. The latter consist of erythrocytes, leucocytes, and thrombocytes, a quantitative balance of which is the prirue factor in maintaining health. This what is meant by the quality of blood. The spleen is the organ in the circulatory system that temporarily retains blood to regulate its circulating volume. Another of the spleen's functions is to destroy old erythrocytes. Like the heart, the spleen holds an important position a s a circulatory organ from a sosho standpoint just as it does in the clinically established context of modern medicine. If the balance of blood components is destroyed, heart diseases are transmitted in turn to the spleen, the lungs, the kidneys, the liver, and back to the heart, with the inevitable result of serious illness. But if the mutually assisting sosho forces come into play, the illness is likely not to worsen but to be overcome. Let's say, for example, that the heart's balance in regard to muscular activity is destroyed. This would adversely affect the volume of blood in circulation and cause a disorder in the spleen. Since this not a n illness confined solely to the spleen cause of the itself, however, curing the heart muscles--the problem-ensures a natural recovery. It's a t times like these that people exclaim, "I was In critical condition, but I pulled through," or "My whole body was a mess, but when one part of it recovered everything got better." What happens is this. Since the spleen is located between the heart and the lungs, the lungs between the spleen and the kidneys, and the heart hetween the liver and the spleen, a healthy heart and healthy lungs ensure a healthy spleen a s well.

Sokoku is the Japanese word used to identify relationships alternately opposed to the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Wood may be perceived as, say, spades and hoes that break the earth. The earth would be levees or embankments holding back water. Water extinguishes fire,

If the lungs' health were then destroyed or if the pulmonary sac were to develop abnormalities, oxygen inhalation would decrease and the blood's condition would worsea. This would make the liver easily susceptible to disease, since it has a compatibility relationship with the lungs. Inside the liver is a large pipe, the hepatic portal vein, a collection point for all the blood from the inner organs, such a s the stomach, the intestines, the gall bladder, the spleen, and the pancreas. disease to the liver, liver disease to the spleen, and then to the kidneys, destroying their function, the resulting problems would be enormous. 'I'he kidneys filter waste materials from the body and send them to the bladder as urine and sweat. If this function fails, 01- falters, unpurified body waste could return to the heart through the blood vessels and put it in critical condition. Many people today receive a kidney dialysis in the hope of pi-olonging life, but I view this as a sort of substitute solution that misses the real point: curing the kidneys. From the kidneys the disease would go on to the heart. If the heart's condition worsened-as it doubtless would-disease would be infected from the lungs, and if the lungs were affected by disease originating in the heart the infection process would be seven-fold. One's chances of survival would be virtually nil. The sosho opposing relationships principle is a natural law that can be explained within the context of Western medicine and is altogether compatible with its views.
( 5 ) Massage Contamination Away
* Oxygen and food are the origins of life Every day we breathe oxygen into our bodies about 25,000 times. But it is not meant to be taken into the body's deeper recesses in gaseous form, a s the intravenous injection of even a tiny air bubble would quickly remind us. Oxygen inhaled through the nose passes through the tra54
chea into the lungs, where it contacts blood pumped from the heart. The oxygen fuses with hetnoglobin in the red blood cells, is absorbed into the blood, and is then carried throughout the body. In the blood capillaries gas exchange takes place. The oxygen diffuses into the body's system, and waste materials and carbon dioxide diffuse out of the blood. Veins carry the carbon dioxide to the lungs, where it is exchanged for oxygen and expelled into the air. Hemoglobin is the super-benevolent Robin Hood of the body. 1t.connects with oxygen when oxygen is plentiful and releases it where it's scarce. Hemoglobin ensures the oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange in the lungs and the discharge of body waste. Oxygen provides the vital sustenance of life, to be sure, but no one lives by oxygen alone. Sooner or later, we have to eat. F ~ o dingested passes through the esophagus into the stomach, where it is digested and becomes gruel-like. In this emulsified state, called chyme, it passes through the pyloris into the duodenum. As it does, bile and pancreatic juice secrztions break down its nutritional components-protein, fat and sugar-and absorb them. The breaking down of such wtriticnal components for digestion generates hydrogen ions and other toxic substances. Just a s our bodies require oxygen and nutrition, they also require waste generation in such forms a s hydrogen ions and carbon dioxide to provide energy.

* Elood circulation carries away waste products The human body is a maze of ri1w-s called blood vessels, basically of three types: arteries that carry oxygen, capillaries that co1ir.ey ox)-gc.n to cells and collect toxic waste, and veins that carry carbon dioxide to the the lungs. Blood from the heart passes through arteries, capillaries and veins and returns to the heart within one minute. If this blood flow is obstructed, oxygen fails to reach cells throughout the body and waste cannot be excreted. Since a capillary's diameter is only one-hundredth that of a human hair, it allows oxygen-carrying red blood cells to pass twos and threes. Capillaries are so only with difficulty-by densely concentrated in the human body that if they were formed into a single strand it would circle the earth several times. Just as water in a clogged river stagnates, blood that cannot flow ireely through blood vessels builds up deposits. Blood thus inhibited cannot transport waste. This in turn obstructs blood circulation in the organs, restricting their ability to function normally.

Lyrnph nodes loczted throughout the lymphatic vessels filter waste matter and bacteria out of our system, and also produce lymphocyte cells that accompany filtered lymph fluid into the veins. We see, then, the irreducible relationship between lymph and blood. One might say blood vessels a r e a supply corps for transporting nutrition in the form of oxygen, and lymph fluid serves a s troops combatting bacteria. 57
Nerves are relay stations conveying reports on the body's brain. The message action to command headquarters---the "Pain!" alerts us to illness so we can react to the danger. Even a tiny cut on your fingertip excites an immediate message from the nerves to the brain. The whole nervous system is like one vast complex of power lines extending throughout the body as its conlmunications network. Combat troops without food supplies cannot function and even well-fed troops without instructions from their command center become isolated and doomed to defeat. So it is with the body's system. So long a s the blood supplies "food" -oxygen-its lymph-fluid soldiers can destroy the bacterial enemy and the nervous system can relay messages to the command headquarters: the brain. Thus all the body's organs can function a t full strength. Deposits adhering to blood vessels suppress the nerves and lymphatic gland-and this is very dangerous. Massaging away these deposits is the' vital key to maintaining health through my method. Please keep it firmly and constantly in mind.
* Kidneys: The contamination

Our bean-shaped kidnet-{Son each side of the spinal column are small but very active waste-chasers. Although together they weigh only 200 grams or so, they receive about one-fifth of the blood from the heart, or virtually a litre per minute. T h e kidneys remove waste from the blood and discharge it from the body as urine, thus keeping the blood clean and its components in balance. In a single day the kidneys filter 180 iitres of blood----enough t o fill an oil drum. 58
T h e kidneys produce urine by cleansing the blood of its and other waste urea, acid, phosphoric acid co~i~pounds materials from nutritional sources. This process maintains the quality of the blood. From a drum-can volume of blood the kidneys produce about 100 litres of urine. One hundredth of it is expelled from the body and rest is reabsorbed when passing into the ureter. This process also adjusts the Sody's water volume and keeps constant the volume of matter in the blood. In~proper functioning of this system imposes a burden on the heart and can cause swelling in the body. Blood contains components such as sodium, potassium and calcium in fixed quantities. If their proportionate relationship is disrupted the organs and the system as a whole will not function properly. Excessive sodium induces high blood pressure, for example, and excessive potassium affects heart muscles and can lead to a heart attack. T o o much blood acidity or alkalinity can hinder the oxygen supply function, but properly functioning kidneys will maintain blood neutrality by expelling an excess of hydrogen ions and stabilizing the acidity level. Important matters are often referred to in japanese a s the "liver-kidney keystone" (kanjir. ka-na-mch), a figure of speech that focuses on these two organs a s being of paramount importance. Indeed tney are. If blood filtered by the kidneys is clean when it reaches the liver, the liver receives no burden. If the liver too is functioning properly, bile secretion is smooth and calculus will not form contamination in the biliary ducts. Proper functioning of the kidneys helps synchronize the other organs' functions.

While massaging your feet and legs you may feel lu~xps around painful areas. 'I'hese lumps are contan~ination--deposits of waste matter mch a s uric acid and the cause of many illnesses. They are of two kinds: oil-substance ancl powder-substance. The first of these, a consequence of the second, underlies the development of rheun~atismand neuralgia. Let's explore this through the example provided by one of my patients, a woman in her mid-forties. When this wan-looking woman first visited me 1 was shocked by the appearance of her legs-unfemii~ine to the point of being almost elephant-like. They were swollen, had no visible veins, and resisted like rubber tires when I tried to massage them. Repeated massaging usually loosens hardened deposits, but not hers. They clung to her tendons in thick knots. In fact, I discovered, with the first hint of feeling unwell she would eat pills like candy. The strength of the medicine inhibited all of her normal body functions. Medicine was making her extremely ill. Medicine-induced contamination in the legs first appears a s powder-substance deposits that feel powdery. As they build up under the skin they transform into sticky oil-substance deposits that seep into muscles and tendons, where they resist 60
massaging. They must be thinned out by massaging the outer layer of skin, and then progressively melted away little by little with increasing pressure. Though it takes time, the deposits eventually dissolve and tend not to reappear quickly. Oil-substance deposits left untreated result in not only rheumatism and neuralgia but also chills, since blood vessels become constricted. A chilled womb, for example, can cause a pregnant woman to give birth to a weak or deformed child. In Western medical science the tendency of some people to develop oil-substance deposits is referred to as "acidic constitution." Such people tend to develop corns and callouses, and have a yellowish cast on the insides of their hands and feet. Back to my patient, the medicine addict. I began by having her stop taking it. Then, without fail, I massaged the stubborn deposits in her legs until the swelling went down. The ring on her finger that she had worn with pain began to fit naturally and her feet began to slip easily into the shoes that had barely accepted them before. Her dull skin brightened, her legs began to look attractive, and she herself became more radiant. She was a different person.
Powder-substance deposits T h e woman's mother was an entirely different case with entirely different legs. They were like bags of flour. When I steadily massaged them upward they actually felt a s though flour was shifting around inside of them. The hardened deposits I broke up with my massages one day were hard again the next, deposits forming with astonishing speed. This is common among people who excessively consume such things a s health food. 61
At the hospital the mother's condition had been diagnosed a s being a type of incurable geriatric disfiguration and she was summarily given up on. After I began therapy she was soon able to bend her stiff, painful knees, and in no time was conducting her affairs without difficulty-----and without pain-killers. Failure to treat people with such powder-substance deposits can invite cerebral infarction, the accumulation of blood in the brain when its blood supply is blocked. Muscles are inherently soft and it is normal for them to harden when strength is applied to them. Loss of their suppleness is a dangerous condition that invariabl j r results in higher blood pressure. Clearly, then, whether your deposits be 011substance or powder-substance, failure to massage your legs will lead to a serious illness. Contamination deposits appear in three layers: the skin, the muscles, and the tendons. Start treatment by massaging the area under the skin, working out the deposits little by littl; and finally breaking down the lumps stuck to the tendons. After that, relief comes easily. Daily massage will lead to a surprisingly healthier constitution.
* How to massage away deposits Obviously, blood circulation and the kidneys play major roles in ridding the body of contamination. T o bring their functions into full play you must, above all, massage your feet and legs. Reflex areas corresponding to the kidneys are above the arches of the feet and thus rarely stimulated by walking. Massage them first. Massage the reflex areas for the kidneys, ureter, bladder and urethra to stimulate the 62
execretory functions. Then massage the entire sole of each foot and continue to a point lOcm above the knee to break down the deposits invariably present. The health benefits of foot massage are numerous, and m a y surprise you. Loosening up your big toe, for example, improves your retentive faculty---the ability to remember things. A case in point is a company president whose firm floundered from lack of technological innovation. Daily foot massage helped spark his will to turn out one new idea after another, and before long his business was on track. A Mr. I who said he had kidney stones requiring an operation concentrated daily foot massage on the kidneys' reflex areas for three weeks-and they were gone. Massaging the feet and legs can also cure headaches, nervous restlessness, constipation, and a bad stomach. Since massaging these areas helps keep the blood clean, it can also contribute to the prevention of cancer cell proliferation. Remember, contamination builds up in your body every day. Breaking up contamination deposits through daily foot massage helps ensure a healthy, active life.

* Partial therapy cannot ensure a complete recovery Large hospitals tend to resemble department stores, with everything laid out neatly into departments such as internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, opthamology, gynecology, gastrointestinal, and ear-nose-and-throat. At the reception window you're asked your problem and are then directed to the appropriate department for examination. This system seems wonderfully convenient vnless you find yourself in the wrong department. If you're sent to the cranial nerve department because you have a headache but examination shows nothing unusual, the problem may be diagnosed as chronic headaches. This is characteristic of ihe Occidental appoach to medical science: "If the head aches, treat the head; if the leg hurts, treat the leg." My patients take an altogether different approach, asking such questions as "Where shou!d I massage the soles of my feet if my hips ache?" Anyone in pain wants an immediate cure, but a partial therapy approach relieves pain only so long a s the therapy continues. Once it stops, the pain or problem resumes. The human body is a complex, systematized factory that functions improperly when anything in it is lacking. As a unity of parts, it may also develop abnormalities in various places if any one part inisfclnctions. Modern medical science tends to focus on the function of the body's organs, despite 66

the fact that they make up less than one half of the body. Ignoring the other half invites increased illnesses. Even with the foot massage method, simply massaging the reflex areas corresponding to a particular disorder will not ensure lasting results. A weak kidney, for example, requires more than just niassagi~lgthe kidney reflex area. If that's your problem, massage your leg all the way from the soles of your feet to a point 10cm above the knee. Only by doing so
can you assist weak areas and strengthen the entire kidney.

The chart on page 67 shows how veins pass through the leg. At the knee an artery bringing blood down from the upper body divides into two, one branch continuing down about the shinbone and the other running along the fibula inside the calf. When contamination in the tip of the foot builds up a s f a r a s the ankle, the ankle hardens. Deposits attach directly to the ankle ligaments and suppress the vessels flowing from the artery, causing increased blood pressure when the vessels become narrow. If contaminatior~builds up as far as behind the knee, where the artery divides, the flow of blood here is suppressed and blood pressure increases even if the blood is clean. This might serid you running to the doctor to take some medicine. Medicine only causes more deposits to build up and during the winter cold the deposits will contract, restricting blood passage and bringing on cerebral thrombosis or cerebral infarction. High blood pressure occurs when blood becomes restricted from passage throughout the body. Blood too contaminared to reach the ends of the feet flows down a s f a r 2s the knee or calf, stops, and is pushed back up. This misplaced volume of blood puts a burden on the heart and liver, and causes congestion in the head that can lead to cerebral hemorrhage or heart disease. Massaging the sole of the foot, closely related a s it is to every internal organ, promotes more vigorous blood circulation. In Japan, advocates of the foot massage method maintain that only the sole of the foot need be massaged. This is incorrect, a misconception not supported by either practical 68

*The bamboo treader (aodake-fumi) provides only partial therapy As a health-related device anyone can use, the bamboo treader has gained ,wide popularity. This device stimulates those parts of the instep of the foot that receive little direct stimulation during walking. Thus it is useful. But whenever I see people treading on one of these short sections of bamboo I'm reminded that they are omitting something essential. Despite its virtues the bamboo treader does not eliminate deposits built up in the arch of the sole. It simply spreads them t o the heels and toes. 69
No matter how earnestly partial therapy is carried out, it will be wasted effort unless the whole body is considered. You can tread on this device all day-work up a real sweat a t it--but all your efforts will be for nothing if the toes, the top of the foot, the ankle and the knee are not massaged in combination, without exception.
* Dangerous use of
Chinese herbal medicine
As the harmful effects of chemicals have become increasingly widespread, attention has focused on the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine. I'm pleased that Chinese herbal medicines are now easily obtainable in many cities, but it distresses me to see uninformed clerks dispensing concoctions of Chinese herbal medicine to customers without giving them an examination. People who are genuinely knowledgeable in the use of Chinese herbs are exasperated about these irresporisible amateurs. Underlying this problem is a fundamental difference in attitudes toward medicine. In the Western world-the Occident -- typical medical practice is to examine the patient, diagnose the illness, arid then prescribe the ccrresponding medication. lr, the Orient, each patient's condition and illness are analyzed individually, after which herbs corresponding to the symptoms are prepared in combinations of ten or more. After the patient's overall condition has thus been carefully observed, the most appropriate herbs are compounded. This is the procedure followed in Chinese herbal medicine. Pztients may be physically weak or strong, slight or sturdy of build, allergic or not-physical differences can be a s differ70

ent as faces. Combinations of Chinese herbal medicines reflect the differences, an approach to medication con~pletely different from the Western practice of dispensing various drugs after a brief consultation. T o be effective, Chinese herbal medicines must be taken a t times that corresponding to the body's natural rhythms. Taking them a t a time \vhen the ailing organ is inactive can cause unexpected results. Body functior?~have a specific schedule that produces subjective symptoms such a s coughing a t dawn, restless sleep at night, and awakening a t sunrise. Chinese herbal ~nedicinemust be taken before the organ being treated reaches peak activity (see p. 72). Chinese herbal medicine is decidedly effective but also too complicated for uninformed amateurs to use without incurring serious risk. Conversely, reflex area therapy for the sole of the foot can be learned easily and done by anyone.
* Health foods won't necessarily make you healthy Although famine still strikes even'in our times, an abundance of food is avaiiable in most parts cf tlie world today. In fact, the fear of intaking too much nutrition, cholesterol and blood sugar has led to the health food boom. Among the food products now popular are low-calorie types, ginseng extract, and pearl barley tea. During my lectures I'm often asked what I'll have for dinner, what kinds of food I prefer, and what sort of health foods I approve of. Usually I reply, "Excepting human flesh you can eat anything," or "If you have proper regular eating habits you needn't brother to eat health foods." 71

Doctors and their machines It is said that the advance of modern medical science has served to lengthen the average human life expectancy. Indeed, medical science is rapidly developing ne; drugs and new techniques for transplanting organs. But are these phenomena actually resulting in new cures and longer life? I think not. In Japan, for example, despite the lower infant death rate and the longer life expectancy, young people are getting heart congestion and cancer. Parents are holding funerals for their children, the victims. This is 'the saddest of all spectacles. Why is this tragedy taking place? When a doctor asks your problem and you say you have a cold, for example, he may give you an injection or medication without fully examining your condition. You'll often wait three hours for a chat that lasts three minutes. Or it may be left to X-rays or an ECG-an electrocardio-

A fascinating case indeed is that of a Mr. K, who by the time he turned 55 in 1986 had been a regular passenger in a~nbulancesrushing him to the hospital to have repeated operations for an intestinal obstruction. For ten years abdo111inal agony sent him writhing to the floor----several times a year-and each time he rode off to the hospital to have another large cross cut into his abdomen. When all this failed to improve his condition in the least, his sister brought him to consult me. Upon examining the pitifully exhausted Mr. K, I couldn't help shouting, "Your problem is a mere trifle-and your operations were unnecessary." Mr. K's problem lay in the ileocecal valve, located between the lowest part of the small intestine and the mouth of the large intestine. The ileocecal valve's two flaps project into the large intestine to allow its contents to pass only in a forward direction. If they fail in this function, food entering the large intestine backtracks into the small intestine. There it ferments, releasing a gas that puts extreme pressure on the intestinal walls, swelling the lower abdomen, and causing excruciating pain. Immediately I began massaging Mr. K's feet and legs in the reflex areas corresponding to the ileocecal valve. Within two weeks the abdominal pain that had haunted him for ten precious years of his life was com-
pletely gone. Until some twenty years ago a slight abdominal pain accompanied by a white blood cell increase quickly prompted a diagnosis of appendicitis----and an immediate appendectomy. If the pain suddenly subsided while the patient was being prepared for the operation, doctors often operated anyway on the reasoning that it would flare up again more seriously. How times change! Recently we've learned that the n~ucous membrane of the appendix is rich in lymph, making the appendix an important organ. Thus today even practitioners of Western medicine make every effort to avoid performing an appendectomy, and a tonsilectomy as well. Unless an illness directly endangers life, an operation should be a~roided.Operations, if carried to their theoretical extreme, would leave the body with no organs a t all. All of the body's organs have a purpose. All body organs function together in concert to maintain health. Removing an organ places a burden on the other organs. Medicine: pot always the answer
Another patient u7ho recently consulted me had already I)een examined I>y doctors about a terrible ringing in her ears and had been told they were simply over-sensitive. %Then her condition rvorsened she was given pain killers for her headaches, an injection to promote blood circulation, and other medication. But the ringing and pain tvorsened and her storilach and intestines functioned badly. The cause of the ringing was evident as soon a s 1 examined her feet and legs. Her toes were stuffed down into her shoes like wadding-watch out for this----and the fourth toe was wedged under the third and the fifth. Contamination had built up in the base of the toes, the reflex areas for the ears, causing her ears to ring. I instructed her to start wearing shoes that fit and showed her how to do daily massages of the reflex arezs of the fourth and the fifth (little) toes. This soon ended the ringing in her cars, and with it her headaches. Her mound of medicine went into the garbage, and withoilt it her stomach and intes~ines began to function normally again. I'm not waging war on medicine per se. We sometimes need it to relieve acute pain temporarily. But when taken contirluously over extended periods it can suppress the body's natural functions. Perhaps you take medicine a t the first hint of heartburn, say, even though your stomach and intestines a r e functioning normally. This destroys the balance between stomach acids and hinders stomach acid secretion if you stop taking the medication. 77
Energy absortion requires oxygen, an ingredient in natural food. Eating natural food helps the body absorb oxygen. whereas taking chemically compounded pr-cscription medicine destroys the body's oxygen balance. This also applies t o health food products. Eating one fresh lemon is far betteithan taking a handful of Vitamin C tablets. N o t all medicine is bad, but misusing it is bad indeed. So be discreet. Resist that urge to rely on medicine and persist with the therapy based on fundamentals to maintain your health: reflex area therapy. If you misuse medicine you'll simply invite other illnesses. Like the Western world, Japan too seems to have developed a blind faith in medicines. "It's a good doctor who gives medicine" is a ~uistaltenway of thinliing, but many are those who think that way. And their numbers appear to be growing.
(2) Your Feet Are Complaining
* The rising tide of flat feet, More and more mothers in Japan are rushing CG the hospital complaining that their children have "no archesv-flat feet. In Japan, a survey taken in a town in Nagano Prefecture showed that a third of its children had flat feet. Even more disconcerting was a report that over half of the children in Japan's cities have fallen arches. Flat feet can cause a raft of problems: tiring easily with exercise, pain when walking, allergies, sore hips, irregular spinal columns, and stomach and intestinal ailments. Why is 78
the flat feet problern a growing one in Japan? I can think of several reasons. Their- feet are always encased in shoes, building up contamination. Flat feet are of two kinds: congenital-inhering at birth -----and induced. Children born with flat feet are relatively few. X-rays of the feet of flat-footed children usually show normal b o ~ estructure. That is, their flat feet are caused by built-up contamination. Pushing on the arches of such fert produces a soft, flabby sensation. Press down harder and it feels like lumps of moist flour. Harder still, and it seems like a layer of limestone. Massaging regularly, day after day, steadily softevs it up. I say let's get "old-fashioned" again. Let children go barefoot in safe places. Let them climb trees, bamboo. This alone w o ~ l dreduce the cases of flat feet. In any case, induced or acquired flat feet are a red-light warning of a threatening health condition. Contamination in the arch of the foot must be massaged and broken up so it does not spread and cause other disorders.

Among these the most common is hip pain, the result of the burden placed on the hip joints to compensate for the constant bend in the knees. Another is a disease called pes valgus, the bending over of the big toe toward the little toe. This condition causes bones to become disfigured and legs to 81
hurt constantly from pinched nerves. I've appreciated lovely fashion models a s much a s anyone, but many of them have disastrous-looking feet. Some have feet so disfigured that I can't bear to look a t them. I often wish their problem were just in the toes, but it's the whole foot, and it's often very severe. This is because wearing high heels shifts the center of gravity to the front of the foot, producing the kind of forward slouch I described earlier. As well, wearing high heels puts pressure on the womb, restricts blood-flow to it, and thus makes it feel chilled. This is a frequent cause of menstrual pain and uterine myoma, a noncancerous tumor common among women who have never been pregnant. A myoma that blocks the Fallopian tube can cause sterility and obstruct fetal growth. Any disfigurement of the womb can lead to tragedy: the inability to bear children after marriage or giving birth to children that are deformed or physically very weak. Humankind canilot flourish without healthy women, the only ones who can bear children. Their health is and must remain a vital concern of everyone, and nothing should be sacrificed to it.

So instead of being warmed by blood circulation, the baby's feet become cold from lack of it. Parents often then put the baby in a stroller and later have it take a walk. How to choose shoes
Long ago in Europe shoemakers made each customer a wooden foot pattern to which they fit the leather to help ensure healthy feet. Since Japan before modern times had no skilled shoemakers, people wore straw sandals called waraji that permitted the soles of the feet to feel and be stimulated by the ground beneath them. Today as in ai~ticjuity,waraji are the ideal footwear because they permit the ankles and the toes to move freely. When selecting footwear, please keep waraji in mind. In general, look for shoes that give each foot ample room to stretch and move. Avoid shoes that restrict such movement in any way. Consider Inore than just your shoe size. Consider the tips of the toes, the top of the foot, the arch, the heel----the entire foot. You should also choose your shoes after measuring both % feet and then considering how much they swell during the C to EEE (or day. Pay close attention also to width-the wider) designation that refers to the foot's circumference. Width is overlooked to unbelievable extremes. Professional athletes in America have been known to indicate footgear width preferences of "narrow," "medium" and "wide" when issued training gear. Once you've selected your shoes, walk around in them before deciding if they'll still fit comfortably after a long day with swollen feet. This is most important. Anyone can do this therapy, even for other people. The point is to break up contamination deposited in the muscles, tendons, and areas under the skin and thus facilitate absorption from the veins and improve blood circulation so that contamination will be excreted. By loosening up the entire foot through massage you can improve blood circulation up to a point 10 cm above the knee. Drinking warm water then facilitates the discharge of contamination. This alone will help restore your hea!th. Begin treatment with the following three factors in mind. Self-confidence: If you have absolute confidence the nerves in your abdominal cavity will relax, speeding your recovery. Patience: Peoplc with more streilgth should recove3 more quickly, but with more pain. Patience is very important. Commitment: A strong personal commitment to continue the therapy every day is absolutely necessary. If circumstances force you to miss a day or two, resume therapy immediately in earnest. In many instances you'll feel pain go- away while you're massaging and great relief afterwards, but to achieve health takes time. Symptoms tend to disappear after two weeks. 86

Depending on where you apply pressure, it should hurt so much that you jump straight up. If you use a massaging stick you'll hear little cracking, popping sounds. That's contamination sounding off a s it's moved. Don't massage because it the hurts? That's not it. It hurts, so massage it-that's point. The pain is proof that organs connected to the reflex points are not well. Massage your feet as if intending to change their entire sculpture, breaking down the contamination to the point where you can barely stand the pain. The more it hurts, the more good it's doing. Once you get rid of the contamination, other deposits still remaining in the reflex areas corresponding to various organs will naturally dissolve. As a rule you should press toward the direction of the heart, but in any case the point is to break down contamination. Thus you should press toward the point that seems most receptive-with some exceptions. T h e reflex point for the heart, oil the right foot, and the reflex point for the liver, on the left foot, should always receive pressure toward the toes because these reflex points are too deep to otherwise respond to the pressure. Failure to ccntinue rnassaging until recovery leads to a recarrence of the problem. It would appear that three months of massaging ensures recovery for most people. A gaod rule of thumb is one month of therapy for every ten years of age: say, three months for someone about thirty years and six months for someone about sixty, and so on. Tenacity counts. If you think you'll just try it once and forget it, don't try it a t all. Keep a t it until your feet feel a s soft a s a baby's. Once you've recovered, your feet won't hurt no matter where you

Next, the right foot-in the same sequence. Massage the ankle-bone and knee of both legs to improve blood circulation. cups of warm water 13. After rubbing both legs, drink 2 (about 500cc). There's a reason for starting with the left foot, and it's very important. So read carefully. The right foot represents Yin (PS) and the left foot represents Yang (18).Therapeutic benefit is enhanced by massaging the left foot first. When heaiing takes place the weaker right foot heals first and then the left foot recovers. How many minutes is enough? Massage with each foot for 15 minutes for a total of 30 minutes. Rubbing one reflex point for as much as five minutes is not harmful. When some part of the body seems particularly bad, you may even rub the corresponding reflex point for about ten minutes. When the kidney function is not normal, do not excessively massage the reflex areas for the liver and the spinal column. Since waste expulsion cannot keep up with the massaging, it causes an unfavorable reaction. @Points to follow without fail b After massaging always drink 500cc or more of warm
You can massage the top of one foot by rubbing it with your other foot. Do it while standing, pressing down hard on one fcot with the heel of the other. ,First, rub all the toes, then the instep and the sides. Since the heel cannot reach the back of the foot and the Achilles tendon, grip them between the big toe and the second toe and massage them with a pinching motion. In this way both the foot thus massaged and the heel and large toe of the massaging foot a r e stimulated simultaneously. Follow this up by massaging all the way up to above the knee with your hand.

Some people feel pain in the soles of their feet no matter what part of them they apply pressure to. Thus they may think they are hopelessly "sick all over," an absurd assumption. Reflex areas announce even very slight disorders with a painful message, so don't assume you're seriously ill or in overall poor physical health. Conversely, some people feel no pain a t all. They may have quite thick skin, or hard skin, that resists the application of pressure to reflex areas. Such people should first immerse their feet in warm water to soften the skirl and ensure a strong reaction.
Massaging others Some peopel--hte aged, the infirm-are unable to massage themselves. By helping them, you'll contribute to their recovery and help retard the aging process. Have them sit in a chair and extend their feet toward yotl in a relaxzd manner. Put one of their feet on your lap and massage it .while observing their facial color. If they appear to pale, reduce the pressure and the duration of treatment.

In Japan someone did imagine this and applied the massaging principle and practical needs to a marvelous device called the Shape-Up Roller. In October 1985 I took my grandchild with me shopping to a Tokyo department store and was fascinated to see this product on display. It almost perfectly fit my own concept of what such a device should be like. The Shape-Up Roller can be used to massage various parts of the body, and permits you to massage from the soles of your feet to 10cm above your knees while sitting, in comfort. I immediately had a salesman explain the product to me, after which I said: "This roller is amazing. Once you grasp the theory behind it and explain its proper use, there's no question it will contribute to better health. I intend to buy a few, and I'd like very much to meet your company's president." T h e salesman was shocked. For a moment he looked puzzled, but he subsequently introduced m? to a man in his company's planning department and to another in its business department, who in turn introduced me to the president cf their company, Best Care Company, Limited, sales agents for tne product in Japan and the United States. I dare say it can even promote familial and social harmony. . Stimulating the adrenal glands can start the heart beating again. A person with arrhythmia was about to have a heart operation for it a t the same time I was giving a lecture in Nagoya, Japan, in 1983. Nagoya was hosting an international convention of cardiologists a t which the illness was announced, and the hospital was recommending an operation for the arrhymic patient, a woman. T h e woman was in the hospital with arrhythmia and wisely asked, "If it's all right for me to have an operation, then may I be assured that I will be cured 100 percent?"*When a 100 percent guarantee was not forthcomirig, she said, "Rather than die under the kcife I prefer t o die from my illness," and she went home. Soon thereafter she received a visit from a friend who had been attending my lectures. Hearing about the operation and so forth, he brought her to my office. When I looked a t her feet I said, "Nothing's wrong with your heart."
Amazed, she said, "Are you sure? I'd been told I should have an operation." She seemed half in doubt. "I'm sure," I answered. "Your heart is altogether normal. Then what's the problem? Your adrenal glands." Then I said, "If you come regularly for several days, you'll get well," and she suddenly broke into tears. The caecum is a pouch-like tube between the small intestine and the large intestine from the tip of which extends the appendix. The appendix serves as a lymph duct and protects the ileocecal valve. .Thus if it weakens, the ileocecal valve becomes inflamed and the large intestine's excrement backflows into the small intestine, causing abdominal pain. On September 15, 1984, I had just finished delivering a lecture a t T a k a shimaya Department Store in Tokyo when a woman who had been sitting in the front row approached me and said, "Every year when the seasons change, my younger brother gets abdominal pains. He's taken to tne hospital for drip infusions for twenty-four hours and then comes home. He's had abdominal surgery but can't figure out what's wrong. And he's having difficulty continuing with his work."
I had her bring her brother to me and I examined his feet, discovering a breakdown of the ileocecal valve. His appendix had weakened and his ileocecal valve was inflamed. I had him come every day for two weeks of continuous daily treatment. By the tenth day he was completely cured. Having himself cut open crosswise was altogether unnecessary. Such rash operations are simply no good, for no part of the human body is without a purpose. I hasten to add that acute appendicitis demands immediate surgery. In this case the term "sciatic nerve" refers not to the reflex areas, but rather to those areas where the sciatic nerves extend in various parts of the body. Q & A: What Do You Do In This Case?
When 1'111giving a lecture or a short course or conducting foot therapy I'm often asked questions by patients about their foot therapy and health techniques. T h e clucstions and answers I've presented here will no doubt strike a familiar chord. By all means refer to them when instructing your friends in foot therapy.
Question: I've heard that even foods are either Yin or Yang, and if so does it have a bearing on one's health? Answer: Yes. In general, foods that are stimulating, heavy, fried, or deep-fat fried are Yang, and foods that are light, sour, or cold zre Yin. As a rule of thumb, you should eat Yin foods during the day and Yang foods a t night. Since Yin foods cool your body, avoid eating them a t night. Eating fruits and vinegared dishes a t breakfast is very good. You'll prcKote better health by maintaining a balance between Yin-Yang foods and between the times you e s t them.
Question: I've heard that if you pour cold water on your body after taking a hot bath, you won't catch cold. Is that true? Answer: Absolutely not. Never do that. At saunas people often do that, and it's like putting molten iron in cold water. 142

Answer: Even a healthy body accumulates waste every day, so daily foot massage is ideal. At the very least you should massage your feet twice a week to maintain your health, prevent illness, and retard aging.
Question: I've applied sokushindo therapy for a week straight but I'm still badly constipated. Isn't it all right in this case to take medicine? Answer: Sokushindo should cure constipation in three days. If it takes longer than that, you're not massaging enough. Massage the reflex area for not only the large intestine but also the solar plexus and the digestive system. Compensating with rned~cineis a temptation, but try to avoid it and instead massage more vigorously. Also eat fruits and vegetables for their vitamin C and drink a s much water a s possible.
Question: When I sprained my foot I massaged it and it swelled. Why is that? 143
Answer: Don't let that upset you. You'll recall that the feet and the hands have a corresponding relationship. If you sprain your foot put a wet compress on it and massage the part of the hand that corresponds to the sprained area. If you sprain your hand, put the procedure in reverse: apply a compress to the sprained area and massage the part of the foot that corresponds to it. In either case the pain should subside in about ten minutes. If you massage the point of the injury itself, it will only get worse.
Question: I have bruises and feel pain when I massage them. Should I keep on massaging? Answer: Yes, you may. People who have bruises and swellings can relieve them by immersing their feet in hot water containing ordinary table salt.
Question: No matter how much I take medicine and wash my face, my pimples spread. Can I cure this? Answer: Yes. Pimples are caused by kidney problems. When your kidneys fail to discharge contamination, pimples tend to increase. Taking medicine only causes a greater contamination build-up. One month of continuous sokushindo treatment should give you more beautiful skin. Massage the reflex areas for the liver, the ureter, the bladder, and the kidneys.

Contamination collects in three places: the skin, the muscles, and the glands. At first. even as you massage away contamination in the sltin, you'll continue to feel pain. Next, the pain caused by contamination in the muscles, and finally the pain caused by contamination in the glands, will linger in the same way. Answer: Certainly. It's probably a result of your eating habits. You are probably eating dinner later in the evening, or having a late-night snack. About six hours after your stomach starts digesting your food, your liver is functioning a t its peak. The human body's "wake-up" function exists because a wide-awake state is best for detoxifying harmful waste and storing nutrition. A more rapid cure may result if the reflex areas corresponding to a particular illness are massaged longer and more vigorously. This chapter will deal with common illnesses and their corresponding reflex areas. For women in particular sciatica is an arch-foe of good health, causing chills and menstrual pain. Women stricken by sciatica during pregnancy will get uterine chills that can impair normal fetal development. The mother may undergo a very difficult labor and give birth prematurely to a weak or deformed baby. 'To cure sciatica massage the reflex areas for the adrenal glands, the spinal column (cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and coccyx), the knee joint, and the sciatic nerve. A thorough cure for athlete's foot, it has been said, could 159
win a Nobel Prize. The fact is, athlete's foot can be cured co~~lpletely. It is caused by three different types of fungi that feed on contamination beneath the skin of the sole of the foot. So long as the contamination renlains to nourish the fungi, recurrence is likely no matter how often the feet are disinfected. What to do? Again, massage vigorously. Break up the contamination and the athlete's foot will c!ear up naturally. Be sure to massage the entire foot and to keep your feet disinfected and dry. Moist, musty shoes, in addition to contamination, are an invitation for fungi to come and feast.
1 Corns and Callouses 1 In feet confined by ill-fitting shoes contamination easily builds up and hardens from friction. Deposits hardened into rock-like knobs are called corns, the calculi or "stones" of the feet. Concentrating massages on the area surrounding the corn will gradually reduce it. Once it's gone, consider it cured. Massaging also reduces the size of callouses until they too disappear. T o stop both corns and callouses before they start, wear shoes with a perfect fit. Curing chills can take very little time or quite a bit, depending on the circu~nstances.You can easily cure chills caused by bad blood circulation, for example. Blood vessels restricted by contamination result in difficult blood flow and its companion problem, chills. Weakening of the parathyroid gland causes a calcium deficiency that in turn induces muscle spasms and dams up blood flow. When the adrenal gland weakens, both heart activity and blood circulation become less vigorous. T o remedy these problems massage the parathyroid, adrenal and heart reflex areas and also reflex areas related to the kidneys, the ureter, and the heart. Hard-to-cure chills are those resulting from blood circulation obstructions complicated by sciatic neuralgia. T o cure such chills you must first cure the sciatica by vigorously massaging the sciatic nerve's reflex area. Ringing ears don't really ring a t all. Rather, this condition occurs when contamination oppresses the nerves of the cerebrum. The "tip-off" comes when the big toe hardens and draws tight. If you massage the big toe regularly the ringing will stop. Now you know. But if you didn't, you'd visit thesear, nose and throat department of a hospital and you just might be told to take medicine for the rest of your life. That's enough t o make anyone's ears ring. T h e fact is, the more medicine you take for ringing ears the more they might go on ringing. So massage the big toe's reflex areas for the ear, and also the reflex areas for the

As I mentioned earlier, the li~rcroften doesn't announce its discontent until it's too late. So don't overlook a potentially dangerous liver condition until liver cirrhosis develops. Nip it in the bud. Pay close attention to the reflex areas for the liver and the gall bladder, ~nassagingaway their pain completely. And here's another good point. Since people with strong kidney functions generally do not develop lever cirrhosis, it's wise to massage the reflex areas for the kidney, the ureter, and the bladder. A man I know had been cautioned by his friend, a doctor, that his liver condition could become dangerous in two years if unattended. The man suddenly suffered a severe pain in his right abdomen and decided on reflex area massage. His pain persisted for two weeks, but during the third week of treatment the hardened areas in his feet loosened up and the swelling went down, and so did the pain. After an extended period of massaging he visited his friend, the doctor, who said, "I've never seen you look a s healthy a s you look today." He wondered what had produced the cure.

Pain in the reflex areas for the reproductive glands suggests impotency in men and frigidity in women. These are indeed serious conditions having potentially grave repercussions for the couples involved, for their children, and for society a s a whole. Males should thoroughly massage the reflex areas for the reproductive glands, the prostate, the penis, and the groin. Cessation of pain signals a return t o normality. Females, similarly, should massage the reflex areas for the reproductive glands, the uterus, the vagina, and the groin, while heeding the sciatic nerve. Since sciatica in women often brings on chills, menstrual colic, and frigidity, women should also massage the sciatic nerve's reflex areas. I should like tc cite the example of a woman married for 167
two years to an impotent man. They were told that a fold in a vein running to the right testicle was preventing blood passage-thus causing his impotency-and that an operation was necessary. When the woman's mother recom~nended foot massage therapy, they agreed. Massage concentrated or! the reflex area for the right reproductive gland relieved the man's fatigue, made his head feel clearer, and gave him more vitality. Five months after beginning foot massage therapy he was sexually active and their home was contentedly back to normal.
1 Cataracts and Glaucoma I Aging tends to bring on diseases of the eye. Since the extremely narrow capillaries of the reflex areas related to the eyes are the most susceptible to congestion, people over 50 are particularly prone to cataracts and other eye disorders. Massage the reflex areas for the kidney, ureter, bladder, adrenal gland, eyes, and head. Consider the case of a 70-year-old man I met during a lecture trip. Cataracts had nearly blinded this man. Seeing this, I gave him a thorough massage after the lecture. Later. in the hot springs bath, I noticed him staring at his feet. Suddenly he cried out, "For years I've gotten in the bath and could never see where I was washing-but I can certainly see now." After that he began daily massages, and because he had the free time to massage regularly during the day, he got quick results. Today he can even take a charcoal-ink writing brush in hand and draw a fine-lined Chinese calligraph.
To fortify yourself against cancer you should develop a physical constitution resistant to this disease-by cleaning the blood. Keep your blood pure and your blood circulation invigorated so that the cancer virus, even if it invades your body, cannot subsist and lead to cancer. Massage the elltire foot and especially the reflex areas for the lyniph glands. Vigorous blood cells are an important deterrent to cancer.
