Preface chorus does not produce a balanced, homogeneous and natural sound automatically. It ust ea to create this soud and develop an ear for it trough targeted exercises Te purpose of chora voice training is not to provide singers with artistic singing instruction but erely to giv tem the "tools théy need for fruitful collaboration in a chorus A
Fortunately, te importance of chora voice training has received increased recognition over the last few years This publication is intended to provi de corus directors with a ost of exercises to coose from. collected the on the numerous trips have taken to visit professional and aateur coruses in Germany and abroad Al corus directors consuted conceing this project ad one thing in comon: they were constantly in search of new and interesting war-up exercises because singing the same ones year in and year out results in lac of concentration and boredom Consequently ope that these warmup exercises can breathe some life back into chorus practice and make te singers curious about what their director will come up with for waing up at te next rehearsal The importance of these warup exercises must repeatedly be explained to singers Tey are just as important as the w-ups an athlete does before training or copetition Even if soe individuas do not notice any great progress in te beginning te small improvements eac singer aes will considerably enhance the sound o f the corus as a whoe Signs of fatigue will ecoe less frequent and te volue and sound of the corus will gain intensity omogeneity and versatility Moreover the voice wíll becoe stronger smooter and ore resilient t is also iportant for a chors director to wor intensely on his own voice experenting wit all of te suggested exercises severa! times himself rst and using only tose exercises e feels comfortable with wen appearing in front o f te cos Because this boo is also to be mareted inteationally conventional inteational notation is used eight-note beams instead of ags Te sall guide notes that appear at the end of each wa-up exercise indicate ow hig and low te exercise shoul be sung. However tey are only suggestions and can be raised or lowered as needed Similarly al of the dynamic sybols are erely intended t o provide guidelines and are not binding instuctions The objectives of te waup exercises overlap in numerous instances For example an exercise for vowel modication is also good training for expanding vocal range or dynaics Some o f te exercises will inspire cildren's coruses to sing with great entusias (eg 7 .22), wile eliciting only a tired grin from adults Therefore you should select the rigt combination of exercises for your special needs from this veritable treasure chest o f experience collected fro numerous coruses and soloists The huan voice is te ost sensitive and delcate of al instruents Only with careful and esonsible use over te years can it be kept healty and strong Chora voice training and these warm-up exercises can ae a valuable and long-lasting contribution to achieving this goal Wiesbade Gerany

4 Beathing execises It is benecia! to precede the actual warm-up exercises with a few, specic beathing execises. They ae pefomed in the basic position (see Chapter ) Four basic rles should be obsrved in this context:
Inhalation shold never be audible or visible (do not raise the sholders or rib cage during
inhalation). Do not let the chest collapse during exhalation. Stand p straight, but generally keep the body relaxed. Do not ll the lungs "to the brim with air, because it is not the volume of air that is decisive, but rather how you use it. The following exercises generally have two different objectives: To promote calm and uniform ai ow (Exercises 7 To activate the breathing muscles and the diaphragm (Exercises 8-)
B
Breathe primarily through the nose without raising the chest or shoulders. Exhale on a so s or f Wait until you feel the urge to inhale, and then feel how the body breathes in on its own.
Take three discontinuous breaths, as if you were smelling a ower. Simutaneously expand the pharynx. Then exhale three times. This effectivey expands the nostils, the back of the pharynx, the chest and the lower back, as they try to pass on the aroma to the body.
Exhale by blowing out gently and uniformly. Imagine that you are: Blowing on a pinwheel Cooling hot soup Defrosting a frozen window pane The breathing organs expand and the lung empties. Thoughts of these images are controlled by the central nervous system. Concentrating on them leads to increased muscular activity. In the region of the breathing muscles, this means more intense use of the inhalation cycle Therefore, deliberately use images to lead the sngers through these exercises.
Exhale pause feel the urge to inhae let the air slowly ow in again exhale camy and uniformly with a so, silent s; do not sputter. Repeat the exercises with a voiced v or s, s Make sure that the throat is completely open and relaxed.
v
Intense breathing: hold one nostril closed inhale sowly and deeply through the other one and then exhale completey through the mouth. Aternate between the e and rit nostril During the exercise fee the intake motion of the diaphragm which is stronger now because it has to work harder to take in the same amount of air under these conditions.
