“¿Por dónde he entrado? ¿Quién es usted?” ¿No sabe hacer otra cosa que preguntar minucias? No he entrado por ningún sitio. – ¿He dicho yo que buscara alguna cosa? Me habré expresado mal.

No suele sucederme.

UNIT 4 – ANDALUSIA LOVES YOU
Andalusia land of contrasts 1. READ THE TEXT (Adapted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS Andalusia (English pronunciation: /ændəˈluːziə/; is an autonomous community of Spain. It is the most populous (8,370,975 inhabitants in 2010) and the second largest, in terms of land area, of the 17 autonomous communities of the Kingdom of Spain. Its capital and largest city is Seville. The region is divided into eight provinces: Huelva, Seville, Cádiz, Córdoba, Málaga, Jaén, Granada and Almería. Since the Industrial Revolution, Andalusia has been an economically poor region in comparison with the rest of Spain and the European Union at large. However, the growth of the community especially in the sectors of industry and services was above average in Spain and higher than many communities in the eurozone. The region has, however, a rich culture and a strong cultural identity. Many cultural phenomena that are seen internationally as distinctively Spanish are largely or entirely Andalusian in origin. These include flamenco, bullfighting, and certain Moorish-influenced architectural styles.
The territory now known as Andalusia fell within the sphere of influence of ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Phoenician colonization brought the cult of Melqart; it continued in Roman times as Hercules, mythical founder of both Cádiz and Seville.
The Islote de Sancti Petri held the supposed tomb of Hercules, with representations of his Twelve labors; the region was the traditional site of the tenth labor, obtaining the cattle of the monster Geryon. Traditionally, the Pillars of Hercules flank the Strait of Gibraltar. Clearly, the European pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar; the African pillar was presumably either Monte Hacho in Ceuta or Jebel Musa in Morocco. The Roman road that led from Cádiz to Rome was known by several names, one of them was Via Herculea, Hercules way returning from his tenth labor. The present coat of arms of Andalusia shows Hercules between two lions, with two pillars behind these figures.
Andalusia has a lot of social customs, many of which have their origin in Islamic traditions Each area in Andalusia has its own unique customs that are a combination of Catholicism and local folklore. Traditional dress in all areas of Andalusia is colorful. Cities like Almeria are influenced by both Granada and Murcia, with the use of traditional hats. In Cadiz costumes in society often show rural origin with bullfights and big parties. The tablado flamenco and the cante jondo originate from Granada. They have their origin in oriental, Gregorian, Moorish, and Jewish music. Presently this music is performed by gypsies. Gypsies are more common in Granada than anywhere else in Spain. In Huelva, one of the most important events is the Romeria del Rocio in May. It is a pilgrimage to a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was supposedly hidden from the Muslims. Legend says that when it was rediscovered and moved the Virgin asked to be returned to the woods. In Jaen, the saeta is a type of expression popular in the region. It is a form of chanting to the Virgin Mary, which shows religious devotion. Malaga, is the birthplace of Spanish bull-fighting. The region also has a rich musical tradition that comes from Arab songs. Seville holds the Semana Santa, the largest festival in Spain. During the

festival, religious fraternities dress as penitents carrying big altars. Overall, all the regions of Andalusia have developed different customs, but all are connected to Catholicism and the region’s Arabic cultural past. 1. Is Andalusia a rich community? Is there any positive economic sign?
2. Is it correct to say that Andalusia internationally represents Spain? Why?
3. Why is Hercules in the coat of arms of Andalusia?
4. Which different types of traditional Andalusian music are mentioned in the text?
5. Is the Arabic past important for traditional Andalusian customs? Why?
2. READ AND COMPLETE THE SENTENCES. We have read at the beginning of the previous text that Andalusia is a land of contrasts. On one hand it is economically poor in comparison with the rest of Spain and the European Union, but on the other hand it is growing faster and it has a rich culture and a strong cultural identity. You must express your opinion: Andalusians must improve …. Andalusians mustn´t lose …. In my opinion people in Andalusia should …. Visitors who come to Andalusia should …. 3. DILEMMAS IN ANDALUSIA When you are in a celebration or visiting a monument in Andalusia different things can happen. We will try to find the best solution to these dilemmas. In groups of two people you must comment or suggest possible, advisable or necessary solutions using could, should, must, have to, may or might. Write a sentence or two in each of the following situations. 1. Your parents prefer your younger brother to you. They are taking him to Isla Mágica, but they are not taking you.
2. Your boyfriend / girlfriend said he or she couldn’t come out with you this evening because of work; but some friends of you have seen him or her coming out of a stall in Córdoba’s fair with another boy / girl.
3. You are in a school trip to the city of Seville. You are the only person who is wearing shorts and they don´t let you get into the cathedral dressed like that.

5. One friend of you who lives in Jaen is allergic to olive pollen. You have seen an article in the internet describing a new medical program created by a doctor from Fernán Núñez.
4. STUDY HOW MODAL VERBS ARE USED.
We use CAN to say that something is possible or that you have the ability to do something. The negative is can´t or cannot. Can has only two forms: can (present) and could (past). So sometimes we use be able to. We use can´t to say that something is impossible. You can see Africa from Tarifa. I cannot go to Motril just walking. My friend couldn´t go to El Rocío last year but he will be able to go next month.
We use HAVE TO and MUST to say that it is necessary to do something. We also use must to say that we are sure that something is true. MUSN’T and DON´T HAVE TO are completely different: You mustn´t do something means it is necessary that you don´t do it. You don’t have to do something means it is not necessary to do it.
You must / have to wear warm clothes if you go to Sierra Nevada in winter. He is a costalero so he must be very strong. He doesn’t have to wear a suit in la feria but he wears it because he likes it. You mustn’t drink alcohol in these celebrations because you are not eighteen.
We use SHOULD to give advice. We also use should to say that something is not right or what we expected. You should go and visit Doñana. He should say that he doesn´t want to eat espetos if he doesn’t like fish.
ENGLISH (MIGUEL GÓMEZ ÁLVAREZ) IES MIGUEL CRESPO
UNIT 4 – ANDALUSIA LOVES YOU
We use MAY COULD or MIGHT to talk about possible actions . We also use can, could or may to ask permission. I can´t find my brother. He may /could / might be sleeping because he went to a Romería yesterday night. May I come in? / Could I use your phone? / May I help you, madam? (in a shop)

Agony aunt
One of the most popular and common activities to practise the modal verb should are situations in which people ask for advice. Many people in Andalusia have ‘agony aunts’. They are a typical section in British newspapers (sometimes called ‘Dear Abby’ columns in North America). Each student must write about a problem they have (real or imaginary) that they would like advice on. Students should write these problems on a slip of paper, but not write their name. The teacher collects all the slips of paper and puts the students into groups of four. Give each group four ‘problems’ at random. Tell them to select two and give advice to the writer about their problem (including modal verbs such as should, shouldn’t etc). When groups have finished, ask them to read out the problem and the advice. Those are the rules One activity to get students to practise modal verbs of obligation is to ask them to make rules. Students work in groups of four. The teacher gives each group the name of a place in Andalusia and asks them to write 4 rules for this place (using must, mustn’t, have to and don’t have to). When they finish, groups read out their rules and the others guess the place. ___________________________________

6. MODAL VERBS REFORMULATING. Students often use different expressions instead of Modal verbs because they don’t feel sure about them. We will see that Modals are easy too. Join the sentences that have a similar meaning.

He can't be in Seville.
It's probable that he's in Seville.
He might be in Seville.
It's impossible that he's in Seville.
He must be in Seville.
"NO8DO" is the official motto and one of the many legends of Seville. The legend has left its mark in the city because you can find NO8DO on a lot of places from the caps of the municipal sewer and water system, to buses, taxis and monuments. The motto is a combination of the Spanish syllables (NO and DO) and a drawing in between–the figure "8". The figure represents a skein of yarn, or in Spanish, a "madeja". When read aloud, "No madeja do" sounds like "No me ha dejado", which means "It [Seville] has not abandoned me". ENGLISH (MIGUEL GÓMEZ ÁLVAREZ) IES MIGUEL CRESPO

Legend says that after the conquest of Seville from the Muslims in 1248, King Ferdinand III of Castile and León moved his court to the Muslim palace, the Alcázar of Seville. After San Fernando's death in the Real Alcázar, his son, Alfonso X assumed the throne. Alfonso X was a scholar king. He was a poet, astronomer, astrologer, musician and linguist. Alfonso's son, Sancho IV of Castile, tried to usurp the throne from his father, but the people of Seville were loyal to their scholar king and this is where NO8DO originated when, according to legend, Alfonso X rewarded the fidelity of the "Sevillanos" with the words that now appear on the official emblem of the city of Seville. Now rephrase the following sentences using Modal Verbs.
1. If I were you I would go on holidays to El Cabo de Gata. ___________________________________________________________________

NERVOUS SYSTEM AND ENDOCRINE SYSTEM IN THE CONTEXT OF ANDALUSIA NEURONS The human body is made up of trillions of cells. Cells of the nervous system called nerve cells or neurons, are specialized to carry messages through an electrochemical process. The human brain has approximately 100 billion neurons.
-
Node of Ranvier is a small area between Schwann cells on an axon that is unmyelinated or uncovered. Myelin: soft, white, fatty material that forms a sheath around the axons of most neurons.
Neurons come in many different shapes and size. Neurons are similar to other cells in the body because: 1. Neurons are surrounded by a cell membrane. 2. Neurons have a nucleus that contains genes. 3. Neurons contain cytoplasm, mitochondria and other organelles. 4. Neurons carry out basic cellular processes such as protein synthesis and energy productions. However, neurons differ from other cells in the body because: 1. Neurons have specialized extensions called dendrites and axons. Dendrites bring information to the cell body and axons take information away from the cell body. 2. Neurons communicate with each other through and electrochemical process. 3. Neurons contain some specialized structures (for example, synapses) and chemicals (for example, neurotransmitters). Neurons can be classified by the direction that they send information. a) Sensory (or afferent) neurons: send information from sensory receptors (e.g., in skin, eyes, nose) TOWARD the central nervous system. b) Motor (or efferent) neurons: send information AWAY from the central nervous system to muscles or glands.
NATURAL SCIENCES (PILAR LLAMAS GIL) IES MIGUEL CRESPO
UNIT 4 – ANSALUSIA LOVES YOU
c) Interneuron: send information between sensory neurons and motors neurons. Most interneurons are located in the central nervous system.
There are several differences between axons and dendrites:
AXONS. -
Take information away from the cell body. Smooth surface. Generally only 1 axon per cell. No ribosomes. Can have myelin. Branch further from the cell body.
DENDRITES. -
Bring information to the cell body. Rough surface. Usually many dendrites per cell. Have ribosomes. No myelin insulation. Branch near the cell body. NATURAL SCIENCES (PILAR LLAMAS GIL) IES MIGUEL CRESPO

The nervous system is divided into the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM and PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. - The central nervous system is divided into the brain and the spinal cord. The adult human brain weighs 1,3 to 1,4 Kg. The brain contains about 100 billion neurons. The spinal cord is about 43 cm long in adult women and 45 cm long in adult men. The brain is divided into two halves, called hemispheres. Each hemisphere communicates with the other through the corpus callosum, a large band of neurons.
Brain structures: a) Cerebrum: Largest part of brain involved with conscious perception, voluntary actions, language, reasoning, memory, thought and personality. In the cerebrum there is a part called cerebral cortex surrounds the hemispheres. Functions: movement, balance and posture. b) Cerebellum: The word cerebellum comes from the Latin word for “little brain”. The cerebellum is located behind the brain stem. In some ways, the cerebellum is similar to the cerebral cortex; it is divides into hemispheres and has a cortex that surrounds these hemispheres. c) Brain stem: The brain stem is a general term for the area of the brain between the thalamus and spinal cord. Functions: breathing, heart rate, blood pressure… d) Hypothalamus: The hypothalamus is composed of several different areas and is located at the base of the brain. The hypothalamus acts as
a “thermostat” by sensing changes in body temperature. For example, if too are too hot, the hypothalamus detects this and then sends a signal to expand the capillaries in your skin. The hypothalamus also controls the pituitary. Others functions: emotions, hunger, thirst… e) Thalamus: The thalamus receives sensory information and relays this information to the cortex. Functions: movement, sensory processing.
The peripheral nervous system are the 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. The peripheral nervous system is divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. In the peripheral nervous system, neurons can be functionally divided in three ways:

In ANDALUSIA one of the diseases of the nervous system is Alzheimer.
Alzheimer´s disease attacks the brain. People with AD have a gradual memory loss and difficulties with language and emotions. A person may become lost in familiar surroundings, forget whether a task was done, repeat the same story, or is unable to learn new things. The progressive loss of intellectual abilities is termed dementia. As the disease advances, the person may need help in all aspects of life: bathing, eating, and using the restroom. The disease is irreversible and there is currently no cure.

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions:
Chemical and energetic industries from Huelva and Cádiz generate 33% of total production and demand attention from the administration Companies of the Energetic and basic Chemistry sectors from Campo de Gibraltar (Cádiz) and Huelva represent more than one third of the total value of the production in its field in Andalusia. For this reason, these companies demand more attention from public administrations and society in general. They claimed to have “more importance in industrial politics according to their potential” According to the report from the “Asociación de Grandes Industrias del Campo de Gibraltar (AGI)” and from the “Asociación de Industrias Químicas y Básicas de Huelva (AIQB)”, managed by professor Francisco Ferraro and in whose presentation were the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Chaves, the municipalities from Algeciras, Los Barrios , San Roque, and Palos de la Frontera, concentrate since the sixty years one "increasing number of companies, predominantly industrial, that have been situated Huelva and Cádiz between the places with more activity and dynamism of the Andalusian economy". "In a time of crisis like now, the stability of production and the companies they installed –although they are not exempt of threats that are now beginning to appear-- point to them as one of the most solid bases of the regional economy." In this sense, as a whole, Andalusia is second on the national ranking in terms of value of production, with a 10,9 per cent of the total, behind Catalonia (23,4%). In this context, both associations took this data as a base to show their high potential, although, “it is not reflected in the industrial planning for the region for the following years. So, they remarked that it has not been analyzed enough their activity fields and in addition, their activities are not classified as strategic, although other activities with less volume of production in the Andalusian or Spanish economy are classified as strategic. The value of production of the companies integrated in AGI and in AIQB grow more than 10.000 million euro in 1998-2007, reaching the 16.385,5 millon euro in 2007, which almost triples the number in one decade. In the detail of the production emphasizes the importance of the refine of crude, 49 per cent from the total. The second position corresponds to the smelting of metals, with 27 per cent, followed by the petrochemical industry; which has eleven per cent of the value of production. Behind these three groups comes the basic inorganic industry and fertilization, both with two per cent and the paper mill industry with one per cent of production. It has not always been like this: during the 19th and part of the 20th century Andalusians had to leave. The most important reasons were the Civil War and the search for a better future. The most common countries for emigration were Venezuela, Argentina (South American in general), Switzerland, Germany, France or Belgium. Also, many Andalusians went to Cataluña, Madrid and País Vasco.

ACTIVITY 1: Characteristics of Andalusian music The Andalusian cadence is a term adopted from flamenco music for a chord progression comprising four chords descending stepwise. It is otherwise known as the minor descending tetrachord. Traceable back to the Renaissance, its effective sonorities made it one of the most popular progressions in classical music. Despite the name, it is not a true cadence (i.e., occurring only once, when ending a phrase, section, or piece of music) but is most often used as an ostinato (repeating over and over again). It is heard in many rock songs, but also in Classical music.
1. Listen to the example of Andalusian cadence.
ACTIVITY 2: Andalusian classical music Andalusian classical music is a style of Moorish music found across North Africa, though it evolved out of the music of Andalusia between the 9th and 15th centuries, during a period known as Al-Andalus.
It is now most closely associated with Algeria, though similar traditions are found in Morocco, Tunisia and Libya. Andalusian classical music was allegedly born in the Emirate of Cordoba (AlAndalus) in the 9th century. The Persian musician, resident in Iraq, Ziryâb (d. 857), who later became court musician of Abd al-Rahman II in Cordoba, is sometimes credited with its invention. Later, the poet, composer and philosopher Ibn Bajjah (d. 1139) of

Saragossa is said to have combined the style of Ziryâb with Western approaches to produce a wholly new style that spread across Iberia and North Africa. By the 11th century CE Moorish Spain and Portugal had become a center for the manufacture of instruments. These goods spread gradually to Provence, influencing French troubadours and trouveres and eventually reaching the rest of Europe. The English words lute, rebec, guitar, and naker derive from the Arabic oud, rabab, qithara and naqareh, although some Arabic terms had been revived from the Greek and other cultures. The classical music of Andalusia, al-ala reached North Africa via centuries of cultural exchange, the Almohad dynasty and then the Marinid dynasty and the Abdalwadid being in power both in Al-Andalus and North Africa (the Maghreb). Mass resettlements of Muslims and Sephardi Jews from Cordoba, Seville, Valencia and Granada, fleeing the Reconquista, further expanded the reach of Andalusian music. 1. Write four adjectives that define the next hearing of Andalusian music.
2. Write the name of the following Andalusian instruments.
Rebec – Quanún- Oud – Darbuka – Taarija - Nagareh 3. What are qasidas?
4. Who was Ziryad?

ACTIVITY 3: Music in the Renaissance Cristóbal de Morales (c. 1500 – between September 4 and October 7, 1553) was a Spanish composer of the Renaissance. He is generally considered to be the most influential Spanish composer before Victoria. Almost all of his music is sacred, and all of it is vocal, though instruments may have been used in an accompanying role in performance. He wrote many masses, some of spectacular difficulty, most likely written for the expert papal choir; he wrote over 100 motets; and he wrote 18 settings of the Magnificat, and at least five settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah.
Cristóbal de Morales
Alonso Mudarra (c. 1510 – April 1, 1580) was a Spanish composer and vihuelist of the Renaissance. He was an innovative composer of instrumental music as well as songs, and was the composer of the earliest surviving music for the guitar. The place of his birth is not recorded, but he grew up in Guadalajara, and probably received his musical training there. He probably went to Italy in 1529 with Charles V, in the company of the fourth duke of the Infantado, Íñigo López de Mendoza, Marqués de Santillana. When he returned to Spain he became a priest, receiving the post of canon at the cathedral in Seville in 1546, where he remained for the rest of his life. While at the cathedral, he directed all of the musical activities; many records remain of his musical activities there, which included hiring instrumentalists, buying and assembling a new organ, and working closely with composer Francisco Guerrero for various festivities.

ACTIVITY 4 MANUEL DE FALLA (November 23, 1876 – November 14, 1946) was a Spanish Andalusian composer of classical music. With Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados he is one of Spain's most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century. Falla was born in Cádiz. His early teachers in music were his mother and grandfather; at the age of nine he was introduced to his first piano professor, Eloísa Galluzo. Little is known of that period of his life, but his relationship with his teacher was likely conflicted. In 1889 he continued his piano lessons with Alejandro Odero and learned the techniques of harmony and counterpoint from Enrique Broca. At age 15 he became interested in literature and journalism. In 1896 he moved to Madrid where he attended the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación. He studied piano with a colleague of Isaac Albéniz and composition with Felipe Pedrell. In 1899, by unanimous vote, he was awarded the first prize at the piano competition at his school of music. He premiered his first works: Romanza para violonchelo y piano, Nocturno para piano, Melodía para violonchelo y piano, Serenata andaluza para violín y piano, and Cuarteto en Sol y Mireya. That same year he started to use de with his first surname, making Manuel de Falla the name he became known as from that time on. When only the surname is used, however, the de is omitted. In 1900 he composed his Canción para piano and various other vocal and piano pieces. He premiered his Serenata andaluza y Vals-Capricho para piano in the Ateneo de Madrid. Due to the precarious financial position of his family, he began to teach piano classes.

It was from Pedrell, during the Madrid period, that Falla became interested in native Andalusian music, particularly Andalusian flamenco (specifically cante jondo), the influence of which can be strongly felt in many of his works. His first important work was the one-act opera La vida breve (Life is Short, or The Brief Life, written in 1905, though revised before its premiere in 1913). With a libretto by Carlos Fernández Shaw, La vida breve won Falla the first prize in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando musical competition. In April 1905 he won the first prize in a piano competition sponsored by the firm of Ortiz and Cussó. On May 15 his work Allegro de concierto premiered in the Ateneo de Madrid and on November 13 the Real Academia presented him with his prize for La vida breve. In 1907 at the advice of Joaquín Turina and Víctor Mirecki Larramat, Falla moved to Paris. There he met a number of composers who had an influence on his style, including the impressionists Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Paul Dukas. In 1910 Falla met Igor Stravinsky and traveled briefly to London. He wrote Siete canciones populares españolas which he finished in mid-1914. Shortly afterward, World War I began when Germany declared war and Falla returned to Madrid. While at no stage was he a prolific composer, it was then that he entered into his mature creative period. In Madrid he composed several of his best known pieces, including:
The nocturne for piano and orchestra Nights in the Gardens of Spain (Noches en los jardines de España, 1916). The ballet El amor brujo (Love the Magician, 1915) which includes the much excerpted and arranged Ritual Fire Dance. The ballet The Magistrate and the Miller's Wife (El corregidor y la molinera) which, after revision, became The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos, 1917) and was produced by Serge Diaghilev with set design and costumes by Pablo Picasso.
From 1921 to 1939 Manuel de Falla lived in Granada, where he organized the Concurso de Cante Jondo in 1922. In Granada he wrote the puppet opera El retablo de maese Pedro (Master Peter's Puppet Show, 1923) and a concerto for harpsichord and chamber ensemble (Harpsichord Concerto, 1926). The puppet opera marked the first time the harpsichord had entered the modern orchestra; and the concerto was the first for harpsichord written in the 20th century. Both of these works were written with Wanda Landowska in mind. In these works, the Spanish folk influence is somewhat less apparent than a kind of Stravinskian neoclassicism. Also in Granada, Falla began work on the large-scale orchestral cantata Atlántida (Atlantis). Falla tried but failed to prevent the murder of his close friend, the poet Federico García Lorca in 1936.

Falla continued work on Atlántida after moving to Argentina in 1939, following Francisco Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War. The orchestration of the piece remained incomplete at his death and was completed posthumously by Ernesto Halffter. He also premiered his Suite Homenajes in Buenos Aires in November 1939. In 1940, he was named a Knight of the Order of King Alfonso X of Castile. Franco's government offered him a large pension if he would return to Spain, but he refused. Falla spent some time teaching in exile. Among his notable pupils was composer Rosa García Ascot. His health began to decline and he moved to a house in the mountains where he was tended by his sister María del Carmen de Falla. He died of cardiac arrest on November 14, 1946 in Alta Gracia, in the Argentine province of Córdoba. In 1947 his remains were brought back to Spain and entombed in the cathedral at Cádiz. One of the lasting honors to his memory is the Manuel de Falla Chair of Music in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at Complutense University of Madrid. His image appeared on Spanish currency notes for some years. Manuel de Falla never married and had no children. 1. Read the biography of Manuel de Falla and answer the questions: a. Where was he born?

ACTIVITY 5: FLAMENCO There are two forms of flamenco songs: cante jondo and cante chico. Cante jondo are slower and usually feature sad lyrics about disappointed love or death, while cante chico are much quicker, more popular and dance-oriented. The concept of duende is very important in flamenco. Loosely defined, duende is a spiritual or emotional bond between the performer and audience, created by the performer's intense concentration and passion. There are multiple styles (palos) of flamenco, including: fandango, fandangos de Huelva, granadinos, malagueñas, saeta, sevillana, seguiriyas, soleares, tangos. The guitar is a vital instrument to flamenco; it marks the measure of a song, and is frequently used in expressive solos during which the guitarist will improvise short variations called falsetas. Ramón Montoya was the most influential early guitarist, known for having solidified the guitar as a solo instrument. His successors included Manolo Sanlúcar and Paco de Lucía. Carmen Linares is the stage name of Carmen Pacheco Rodríguez. Born in 1951 in Linares, Jaén, she is known as one of the finest flamenco singers in Spain. She came to Madrid with her family in 1965. Her professional career began in the dance company of Carmen Mora, and she made her first recording in 1970.

ACTIVITY 6: COPLA ANDALUZA The Andalusian copla is a type of light song which flourished in Spain from the 1940s. Quintero, León y Quiroga are the three most important creators of this genre, among others. He remained as the Spanish popular genre until in the 1960s it was displaced by pop music. The support of Franco’s regime to the song as a symbol of national identity boosted the decline of the copla. Despite the rejection by identifying it with the dictatorship, artists such as Joan Manuel Serrat claimed the genre, contributing to its revitalization. 1. Write the names of three artists of Andalusian copla.
2. Listen to the following song and describe this music.
ACTIVITY 7: ANDALUSIAN ROCK Andalusian rock is a musical and cultural movement that develops basicically, though not exclusively, in Andalusia, between the late 1960s and the first half of the 1980s, framed in a widespread movement of search of the roots. Musically, it consists of the incorporation of concepts, rhythms, melodies and harmonies from the Andalusian folklore and flamenco, rock structures and pop elements. This music is associated to the andalucista feeling of the 1970s. Usually, this kind of music used rhythmic African melodies such as tangos, the bulerías or rumba. The voices are markedly in Andalusian, preserved the modulations of flamenco, and each singer is known to give a personal touch and rocker in lesser or MUSIC (LIDIA GARCÍA-PARRADO CORRALES) IES MIGUEL CRESPO
