(Heaping up good karma in many lives Citta had been born a airy in the 94th aeon) Although I’m Although I’m thin & weak Spring in my once lively gait gone I’ve climbed the mountain leaning on my walking stick I throw the cloak o my shoulder Overturn the little begging bowl Against Aga inst this rock rock I lean lean & prop prop the sel o me Break through the gloom that boxed me in AHHHHHHH Virnala, the Former Courtesan, Speaks
I used to be pued up high on my good looks intoxicated by a great complexion my gure, my beauty ... I was haughty, vain, looked down on other women
Tricycle Teachings: Aging
I was very young All painted painted up up I stood at the brothel door (like a hunter laying snares, showing my wares wares)) Many a secret place was revealed revealed I conjured, I mocked people oday I’m bald Clad in an outer robe, I go begging Sitting at the oot o a tree, I’m not even reasoning anymore All ties have have been cut I said, cut Mutta Speaks Speaks
I’m ree. Ecstatically ree ree rom three crooked things: the mortar the pestle & my hunchbacked husband All that that drags drags me back back is cut-cut! cut-cut! Ambapali Ambap ali Speaks
Once my hair was black like the color o bees Alive—curly Aliv e—curly Now it is dry like bark bers o hemp I’m getting old
Tricycle Teachings: Aging
Tis is true, true , I tell you the truth Covered with owers, my head was ragrant Like a perumed box Now, because o old age, it smells like dog’s ur Tick like a grove it used to be beautiul— Ends parted by comb & pin Now it’s thin, I’m telling the truth Tis was a head with ne pins once, Decorated with gold, plaited, so beautiul Now bald My eyebrows were like like crescents crescents Exquisitely painted by artists Now because o old age they droop down with wrinkles Ah, I’m tellin tellingg the truth truth My eyes used to be be shiny, shiny, brilliant as jewels Now they don’t look so good My nose was was like a delicate delicate peak peak Now it’s a long pepper Tis scarecrow is telling the truth My earlobes once—can once—can you you believe believe it? Were like well-ashioned bracelets Now they’re heavy with creases
Tricycle Teachings: Aging
Formerly my teeth were pearly white like the bud o a plantain Now they’re broken & yellow Indeed, this is the truth Sweet was my singing like the cuckoo in the grove Now my voice cracks & alters Hear it? Tese words are true My neck used to to be so so like a well-rubb well-rubbed ed conch shell Now it bends, broken My arms were round round like like crossbars crossbars Now they’re weak as the petali tree My hands were gorgeous— gorgeous—they they used to be used to be gorgeous— Covered with signet rings, decorated with gold Now they are like onions & radishes Tis is true, I tell you Formerly my breasts looked great— round, swelling, close together, loy Now they hang down like waterless waterbags My body used to be as shiny shiny as a sheet o o gold Now it is covered with very ne wrinkles
Tricycle Teachings: Aging
Both thighs—& this was once considered a compliment— looked like elephants’ trunks—very interesting I swear I’m telling the truth Now they’re like stalks o bamboo My calv calves es too, like like stalks o o sesame My eet used to be elegant elegant like shoes o so cotton wool Now they are cracked & wrinkled Tis hag speaks true Once I had the body o a queen Now it’s lowly, decrepit, an old house plaster alling alling o Sad, but true Anne Waldman, , , , v . Let’s take these two them t hemes es a little l ittle urther, beginning with the idea o presenting Buddhism in a way that is approachable and widely accessible. Tis runs counter to how Zen has operated historically, where, like other meditation sects, its practice has generally been the province o a very small, oen elite, monastic culture. In act, making Buddhist practice universally available was specically the intention o Honen [1133–1212] and Shinran [1173–1262], the ounders o Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, and Nichiren [1222–1282], yet they are barely given attention by most meditation-oriented Buddhists in the West who might well support that very ver y goal. Regarding the second theme, while it is seems evident that interconnection, selessness, and compassion are good medicine or our poisonous times, it is also true that Buddhism has historically had little to say—and usually nothing to say—about how these values are to be applied to social and political systems. In other words, Buddhism may indeed have much to say to our current crises, but doesn’t it also have much to learn about how to go about saying it? T’ . I v , B ’ v . B v , w ? W, . Tere is a subeld subeld o anthropology, oen called psychological anthroanth ropology, that examines the specic ways in which the ego, the personality, the sense o being a subject are constructed in dierent cultural settings. When one reads some o the literature, what is ascinating is seeing the degree to which the very sense o subjectivity is culturally ormed. It could be a long time beore we grasp the implications o this or translating Buddhism across cultures. I w v A
