The TOW2 TOW2 Weapon Weapon System System is a crew-po crew-porta rtable ble, , heavy heavy anti-t anti-tank ank assaul assault t weapon consisting of a launcher with tracking an d control capa capabil bilit itie ies s and and the the TOW TOW (Tub (Tubee-la laun unche ched, d, Opti Optica call llyy-tra track cked ed, , Wire Wire comm command and-l -lin ink) k) guide guided d miss missil ile. e. The The syst system em is an all terra terrain in, , all all weather, day or night system that is easily maintained and simple to operate. operate. This lesson lesson will identif identify y the purpose and function function of the major assemblies of the TOW2 weapon system.

The The operational condition of the launcher system can be checked at any time it is assembled through the use of built-in self-test circuits (no external external test equipme equipment nt is needed). needed). Units which fail the selfselftest are replaced at the operating site. The The miss missil ile e can can be laun launch ched ed from from a grou ground nd impl implac acem emen ent t or from from a vehicle mount and is effective against armored vehicles and targets such such as forti fortifi fied ed emplac emplacem emen ents ts. . The The tact tactic ical al TOW2 weapo weapon n syst system em (Figure (Figure 1-1) 1-1) consists consists of eight eight major major assembl assemblies ies. . These These assembl assemblies ies are the tripod, traversing unit, optical sight, launch tube, missile guidance set, battery assembly (2 ea), power conditioner, and night sight.

Operation of the TOW2 Training Set. The target set (Figure 4-7) is mounted on a vehicle that is located at a realist istic distance nce from the gunne nner. The TOW gunner's performance in a tactical situation is measured and evaluated by the missile hitting hitting the target. However, However, in the the training training situation, situation, no missile missile is is actually actually fired fired. . Since Since you cannot cannot see see if the TOW TOW gunner gunner has hit the target, the evaluation of the gunner must be done by the training training equipment. equipment. The target target source source which simulates simulates the missile missile IR IR energy is located located on the the target. target. Therefore, Therefore, if the the TOW gunner gunner keeps keeps his line of sight on the target, the TOW2 system will believe the miss missil ile e is on targ target et and and no pitc pitch h or yaw yaw erro error r sign signal als s will will be generated by the missile guidance set. The instructor console of the training set, when connected to the missile guidance set of the TOW2 weap weapon on syste system, m, monit monitor ors s the the pitc pitch h and and yaw yaw erro error r sign signal als. s. The The instructor console then scores the TOW gunner's ability to keep the line of sight on targ arget. The train aining set must provide the foll followi owing ng: : targ target et, , missi missile le load loadin ing, g, miss missil ile e laun launch ch, , and and miss missil ile e flight.
