To Whom Should I Speak Today? Here is a poem by Thomas Eric Peet, an Egyptian poet which shows distrust of fellowmen It !oices the idea that problems in human relations were as acute then as they are now The poem tells about someone who has been e+periencing such sorrow ,yet ,he does not know to whom should he speak, to whom should throw up all his regrets, to whom should he con)ne himself for the brutal acts he had done before He considers e!eryone as brothers but the irony is that these brothers does the otherwise from what a brother normally does *nd that lo!e does not e+ist anymore among his former fellows He had also suggests from the poem that many fellow today ransacks each of his fellows life, and there no place for such brotherly lo!e -o!e has faded away and what is left is brutality He also adds that men do not as they were done by nowadays, this implies that people change o!er a period of time but this change is unlikely for the better and thus, suggests the otherwise 'oreo!er, he e+presses that most of the people are not to be trusted with *nd that e!eryone cannot be reliable , and we cannot hold or lean on to anybody in this time *nd a righteous fellow does not e+ist anymore, and what li!es in their land are e!il doers *nd on the last part he suggests that sorrows are to be said betterly to a stranger He considers strangers as his a!enue for his discomforts to breath out and release .rom the poem, I could say that there is always a time that e!erybody is caught between depression and inner con/ict from within People in di0erent walks of life ha!e di0erent struggles *nd what we should always e+pect from the di0erent chapters of our life We may ha!e comrades as we begin our 1ourney and sometimes we ha!e to reali2e that there are certain people who are meant to stay in our hearts but not in our li!es -ike any other people, he e+perienced loneliness, betrayal, misery, and other negati!e feelings that one would e+perience in a war, and so we do In terms of structure, the poems tone is of misery, discomforts, and )lled with heartaches *s I was reading the poem, I was drawing out a picture in my thoughts of how we treat each other nowadays, and he has a point "ut after all, he is )lled with regrets and he nags to himself with the thought that to whom should con)ne his agonies gi!en that he could trust no one I can feel the sincerity of the speaker The constant repetition of to whom should I speak today, is method of foregrounding and he wants to gi!e an emphasis to that idea The latter statement gi!es the conclusion that the
speakers soul is in between anger and depression The words he used are simple, yet, suggest a deep thought that could let e!ery reader feel the way he feels though his emotions were not pro!ocati!ely e+pressed When I first read the poem that was assigned to me for the subject – AfroAsian Literature, I actually found it bore reading it – as in. It’s been a wee then a night before I’m going to report came and I suppose to read this poem again for the second time. !hans "od, I am in the mood reading the te#t so I get the idea and I was ama$ed of what I disco%ered – this poem was based on the e#perience of the author himself. It really touches my heart that moment. If you’re going to thin of the scenario on the poem, it’s been a long time since it happen but if you are going to chec out all the details, until now it really happens.
Admit it or not, there are times that we are thining that we do not ha%e anyone to tal to - it’s either because we had a misunderstanding towards another person or we committed mistaes. !here are also instances that we do not now to whom should we spea each day because we face different people including our friends – but there are still times that we do not now who they really are and we don’t e%en now if we had to tal to them because we ha%e doubt. &ust thin of this, we choose to whom we will share our secrets, we choose to whom we can as for ad%ice and they aren’t the same person. 'eople ha%e hardships on thining to whom should they spea today because we are lacing of trust( of honesty and e%en of faith.
I learned that it’s better to be %ocal but not that much, we must now the limits and chec if it’s the right place and the right time to tal to. We tal not ha%ing the intention to hurt others feeling but to gi%e solutions and opinions in certain topic. If you had a problem with someone – spea up) open up, don’t let your feelings be a barrier to sol%e certain issues. !hen, don’t tell a lie. !elling a lie to sa%e others for a moment is leading to more complicated issues and it will get harder to sol%e. We ha%e two ears to listen and one mouth to spea) just spea with a thought and now to whom you should spea.
