05 ‘WE LOVE LOCKS’ YALE’S NEW CAMPAIGNS 2013 Throughout 2013, security specialist Yale is running a number of campaigns to make consumers think more about security, helping to drive sales for locksmiths. The campaigns kicked off with a ‘We Love Locks’ launch at the Totally DIY show at the Ricoh Arena in February and will continue throughout the year.
10 TENSIONS RISE IN SPAIN Locksmiths and firemen have become the allies of homeowners in Spain, many of whom are facing eviction after losing their jobs in the country’s worsening recession. Following an alarming increase in suicides among people being thrown out of their homes, bailiffs have found that some locksmiths are unwilling to force shift mortgage defaulters out onto the streets.
23 TIME FOR LOCKSMITHS TO SEIZE OPPORTUNITIES While none of the experts is predicting growth in the door and window industry, there are growing opportunities for locksmiths in the security market. Alan Bell of ERA, part of grouphomesafe, talks about some of the trends and opportunities offered to locksmiths in the retro-fit area.
58 RECORD SALES FOR LOCKDECODERS Continually increasing sales volume for the company’s main and exclusive products is paying off with impressive results for the adventurous team at Lockdecoders Ltd. January was the company’s largest ever monthly turnover, beating any previous month by over 35%.

NOTTINGHAM WAS THE PLACE TO BE… Nottingham was certainly the place to be last month when more than 1200 locksmiths gathered at one of the most successful events in the industry calendar, The Locksmiths Exhibition. With so many attractions up for grabs, it was no surprise that this buzzing event pulled in the crowds. We had just enough time to catch up with globe-trotting locksmith Pete Southern of Lockdecoders Ltd before he dashed away from the Locksmiths Expo and over to Denmark and Holland – only a short stride for Pete who must surely qualify as the industry’s mosttravelled representative! Pete and the Lockdecoders team, which now includes his youngest brother Neal, have achieved impressive sales so far this year and the remainder of the year looks equally promising.
‘Help to inspire other young women’ WELL DONE! Our congratulations to the worthy winner of the Lockdecoders Golden Key Trainee of the Year competition, Amy Poss, who works at Peterborough-based City Locks Ltd. Amy was the judges’ unanimous choice for her practical knowledge and 100 percent commitment. Perhaps her example may help to inspire other young women to consider locksmithing as a worthwhile career? The prestigious panel of judges also commended the two other finalists Aaron Hammon and Jack Fagan. It’s good to know that there is such young talent coming up in the industry. IS JACK’S HOBBY A BIT OF A DRAG? In our unending quest to discover what locksmiths do in their spare time, this month we were very pleased to hear from a trainee locksmith on the Isle of Man. Jack Divers is as macho as they come, but he does spend a lot of his leisure time in drag….well, when you are a panto dame,
4

you have to! Jack is a talented musician, actor and dancer so donning the wig, the padding and the makeup is no problem to him. But he admits he does get a lot of stick from his mates…..! A DILEMMA IN SPAIN Many locksmiths who are members of the Spanish Locksmiths’ Union in strife-ridden Spain are refusing to take part in evictions of home owners being repossessed. More and more people of all ages are being threatened with eviction because they are unable to meet their mortgage repayments. The situation has come about largely because of rising unemployment and the increasing cost of living. Firemen are also refusing to take part in forcible evictions of families and elderly people. The MLA says it hopes we never see this happening in the UK, but reiterates that locksmiths involved in repossessions here must take every precaution and ensure that police have a presence in the event of any serious problems. A DIFFERENT WORLD ‘The Rise and Fall of British Safe Making’ is the topic tackled by Mike Palmer of Eurosafe UK in this issue. Mike looks back to the 1960s and reminds us of the many changes that have taken place in the industry since then. AiS SUPPORT ON SAFES We are delighted that AiS, the Association of Insurance Surveyors, is supporting our dedicated Safes section. AiS recently made its excellent Safe Guide available to the whole industry including locksmiths, which can only add usefully to everyone’s knowledge.
IMPROVED APPROACH TO TRAINING The MLA Training committee’s decision to introduce a modular coaching system for the BLI exam is continuing to pay off. The move was part of a bid to reassure experienced locksmiths, who are not yet MLA or BLI members that they have nothing to fear from the exam. Impressively high marks are being achieved and it is hoped that more locksmiths will want to take advantage of this improved approach.
‘Reassure experienced locksmiths’ SPRING IS HERE – WE THINK… As we prepared to go to press with this issue before Easter, many of us were still battling with severe winter weather that continued to cause such disruption – and some inevitable tragedies – across the UK and northern Europe.Roads blocked and whole buildings have been submerged by huge snowdrifts, Arctic winds have been taking temperatures below freezing, exhausted crews manning snowploughs and rescue vehicles continued to work around the clock in appalling conditions. Power cuts caused major problems, not least of which were burglar alarms thrown into chaos. Many of you will have suffered disruption to your businesses as a result of the weather. Hopefully, Spring really IS almost here and we won’t be digging out the van and the drive again come Spring Bank Holiday…..

‘CABINET’ RESHUFFLE AT AUSTRALIA’S LOCKSMITH’S GUILD A ‘cabinet’ reshuffle has resulted in some new faces and changes in national executive positions at the Locksmiths Guild of Australia Inc. New National President is Ron Thomas, following Kel Phillips’ decision to stand down in order to spend more time with his young family. Ron, a NSW locksmith, moves into the President’s role after spending some years as National Vice President. Bob Tierney from Victoria has taken on the Vice President’s position.
Bob, a Southern Chapter committeeman, will also be responsible for constitutional matters.
‘new faces and changes’ John Dunn, a well-known personality in Queensland locksmith circles, becomes the National Training Office and will co-ordinate the efforts of the Chapter Training Officers in the various states. Alan Hopkins remains as the National
Secretary with Graham Behrendorff staying on as the National Treasurer; Richard Knowles will continue to attend to Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. Day to day operations of the Guild’s National Office remain under the control of Barbara Ertz. In spite of the executive changes, one thing is assured, says Richard Knowles - The Guild continues to be run by locksmiths for locksmiths !
‘WE LOVE LOCKS’ - YALE’S NEW CAMPAIGNS 2013 Throughout 2013, security specialist Yale is running a number of campaigns to make consumers think more about security, helping to drive sales for locksmiths. The campaigns kicked off with a ‘We Love Locks’ launch at the Totally DIY show at the Ricoh Arena in February and will continue throughout the year with a ‘Summer Holiday’ themed campaign during the summer months and a ‘Dark Nights’ campaign from September onwards, where Yale will also be running a National Security Month. All the campaigns involve a strong consumer presence in home improvement, national, and regional press, as well as a lot of online activity including an improved and updated Yale.co.uk website. In addition, product news, advice, top tips and videos will be available on Yale’s social media channels. In February, Yale launched its ‘Yale Crime Watcher app’, which offers homeowners current burglary statistics for their area, as well as useful security advice. The app is available free to download on iPhone and Android phones. David Herbert, Head of Marketing for Yale, said: “This huge push of consumer activity builds on the Yale TV campaign at the end of 2012 and will see the Yale brand become even more synonymous with home security solutions in 2013 and beyond. “With a range of products, including traditional security solutions such as British Standard nightlatches and mortice locks as well as modern security products such as digital door locks and ‘smart’ home alarms, Yale has something to suit every home and every pocket.

Overwhelming support for IFSEC London move in 2014 Following the announcement that UBM Live’s Protection & Management Series will be moving to ExCel London from June 2014, UBM Live revealed the overwhelming support received from the industry following the news. The response has been outstanding with visitors, exhibitors, key associations and media partners all expressing their commitment
to IFSEC International in London 2014. Feedback received from every element of the buying chain cements the reasons behind the decision to move the Protection & Management Series - which includes IFSEC International, FIREX International, Facilities Show, and Safety & Health Expo - from the NEC after 16 years, to London’s leading international venue.
IFSEC International will continue to unite all parts of the security buying chain in a truly integrated event. The focus for new features and visitor experience will remain on the core audience of installers, end-users, integrators, distributors and manufacturers, adding even more strength to one of the world’s largest security and fire shows. Jordi Andreu, President
(Installation and Services), ADT UK, Ireland and MENA, said: “ADT UK is delighted to see UBM’s Protection and Management Series move to an internationally accessible location. Events like IFSEC International offer the security industry a global showcase and a London venue will enable visitors, exhibitors and partners to make the most of this world-class event.”
MLA EXPO TO BE AT TELFORD IN SEPTEMBER Telford’s International Exhibition Centre will be the venue of MLA Expo, which will be returning on 13-15 September 2013. Telford is an ideal location, having ample exhibition space and outstanding exhibition facilities, plus parking, proximity to air, rail and road connections and, of course, good accommodation. The biennial event is organised by The Master Locksmiths Association
(MLA), and will see locksmiths and suppliers from across the globe getting together to exhibit products and services, share news and views, discuss industry trends and take part in those all-important training courses. PRIZE DRAWS & SPECIAL DEALS With some brilliant prize draws for visitors (including a fabulous holiday to Las Vegas and a Key Machine) plus
some very special deals on the day, a strong quality training programme and a broad cross section of exhibitors, this year’s event looks set to attract a terrific turn-out. As a measure of their confidence in the event, leading companies Mul-TLock, Yale, Abloy and Assa Abloy Security Solutions are sponsoring MLA Expo ’13 – and will of course, have a strong presence themselves, having secured more than
140 square metres of stand space to show off their latest products to visitors. In our July-August issue, The Locksmith journal will preview this major event in the industry’s calendar.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ONE VISIT JOB Thousands of multipoint locks, hundreds of different handles but only one visit… The key to making double glazing repair work a success is completing the job with as few site visits as possible. Repeat visits are costly in both time and money and the Holy Grail is to attend site and complete the work in one visit. Alex Pugh, marketing executive at Duffells sympathises with the repairer’s conundrum. “Duffells stocks over 12,000 security and repair products. One of our customers could encounter any one of those products at any point, so how do they fit them all on their van?” It’s true that 80% of jobs can normally be completed with 20% of the stock but that is still an impossible amount of product to carry. Local suppliers will carry a limited range and unless you are lucky enough to work within driving distance of one of the larger specialist double glazing repair suppliers then you’ll have to wait for next day delivery. An increasing number of big names have started to recognise that sometimes next day isn’t good enough. Many specialist double glazing repair products, aimed specifically at solving this problem, have been launched over the last few years. Multipoint locks & doors Rollers, hooks, deadbolts, centres, backset and operation: hundreds of variations amount to thousands of possibilities and to avoid spending time moving keeps and cutting profiles, it is important to choose the right lock. grouphomesafe launched its repair lock several years ago to combat this problem. Only

suitable for locks with rollers or mushrooms, it comes with a one piece keep designed to quickly replace a broken lock. Yale’s Doormaster range takes the concept a step further featuring versions with both rollers and mushrooms or hooks. They are either croppable or adjustable and come with a very clever set of replacement keeps. Available with either a 35mm or 45mm backset and a range of faceplates, Yale claims that the Doormaster range will replace 90% of the multipoint locking market.
‘suppliers will carry a limited range and unless you are lucky enough to work within driving distance you’ll have to wait for next day delivery’ The Yale and ERA products only suit locks with 92mm centres but CES’s unique Vario Flex features a lock case with adjustable centres. Supplied as
a kit, the Vario Flex also allows the user to build a lock case with a backset between 30 and 45mm and faceplates ranging from 16mm to 24mm -very handy when faced with an obscure or discontinued lock. Replacement gearboxes are increasingly popular as a space-saving alternative to full length locks. The case tends to be the first part of a lock to fail and most can be replaced. Look out for obsolete and discontinued items, such as Mila and old style GU as replacement gearboxes can even be obtained for those products. Yale’s gearbox kit covers most of the range and cases can be replaced as they are used. The vital upsell need not be a pain either. When a lock breaks; there’s often an opportunity to replace the handle too and there are some clever alternatives to stop you being caught out. Handles with sliding plates that allow both centres and screw centres to be adjusted cover a huge range of the market. “Carrying one set of handles in four different colours, compared with a range of over 250 is a huge help to our double glazing repair customers,” says Alex.
Windows The range of repair products recently launched also covers windows. This includes a window espagnolette that can be cut down to suit the window and which reduces the range of espags required from around 40 to just two. Repair products can also save time. Easifit’s new window handle is supplied with five different length spindles so that whole houses can be replaced in minutes and there is no need either to cut down a spindle or reuse the old one. It’s not just time that is wasted. Most repairers have encounter a customer who, following the identification of the problem and confirmation that they would like the work to be carried out, have called back to cancel the repair. Often that’s because the customer has subsequently found another company willing to carry out the work at a cheaper price. Bear in mind that if a customer had been visited by one of your competitors first, armed with specialist repair products, then maybe that customer wouldn’t be making that second call.

LOCKSMITHS IN SPAIN UNWILLING TO FORCE OUT DEFAULTERS Locksmiths and firemen have become the allies of homeowners in Spain, many of whom are facing eviction after losing their jobs in the country’s worsening recession. Following an alarming increase in suicides among people being thrown out of their homes, bailiffs have found that some locksmiths are unwilling to force shift mortgage defaulters out onto the streets. David Ormaechea, President of Spain’s Locksmiths’ Union, told the AFP news agency, “Families’ lives were being ruined and we were acting as executioners. It was causing us tension and unease.” When government-backed banks have turned to the fire service to break down the doors of those who resist eviction, some fire brigade workers have been reluctant to step in. Spain’s unemployment rate is running at 26 percent – almost twice that for young people. The jobless situation
10

has led to many young people leaving the country in droves to seek work elsewhere, while many homeowners are simply unable to meet their mortgage payments. Under Spanish law, a bank can pursue a borrower for the remaining balance of a loan if the value of the seized property does not cover it. Some Spanish families are getting help from Platform for Mortgage Victims (PAH), a citizen protest movement fighting the evictions. The campaign provides legal support and tries to negotiate with the banks to allow families to remain in their homes and pay rent. PAH this month succeeded in getting parliament to consider a new law, backed by a petition with 1.4 million signatures, to end evictions and let insolvent
‘Lives were being ruined’ homeowners write off their debts by surrendering their homes. Over the past four years the movement has campaigned by turning up in crowds outside the homes of evictees and sitting on their doorsteps to try to stop police and bailiffs throwing them out. It says it has blocked nearly 600 evictions. In both Britain and America, there have been cases in which locksmiths have been injured or even killed while carrying out their work in
assisting bailiff repossessions. Dr Steffan George of the MLA commented: “The issue of warrants can be a dangerous job for locksmiths and in the UK, we always encourage vigilance and appropriate protection where necessary unfortunately, stab vests are not that unusual any more. “A good working relationship with the bailiff helps, especially when you know you can rely on each other to look after each other. Having the police attend known trouble spots is a must.”

LOOKING AFTER SMALL BUSINESSES Offering an extensive range of hardware security and safety products to the trade, Staffordshire-based HARDWARE OUTLET aims its range of quality products and services specifically at small businesses to whom they offer some key advantages. Director Andy Meakin set up the online business to the trade and retail market in August 2010 with his wife and co-director, Hayley, after their experience in both manufacturing and distribution of hardware security and safety products. Andy, whose earlier background was in the double glazing industry, said: “What we have aimed for from the start is providing the best products we can get but at the most realistic prices. “We are well aware that small businesses and sole traders need to source the products they need - but because they are not in a position to buy in bulk, they often have to pay substantially more for the privilege of buying just one, two or three items. “The same applies to our retail customers, who obviously are buying single items but who will generally pay a lot more in the big DIY chains than from us.” But while prices are maintained at that affordable level, Andy insists on supplying quality products, not ones of inferior quality. “We never want to be in a position where our1customers come 12673 - HardwareOutlet - HALFAD.pdf 26/03/2013 16:40 back to us with issues about inferior product quality,” Andy said.
Realistic solutions & prices for businesses and sole traders. C
“For example, we supply the well-known Jackloc restrictors which are designed to provide child safety,” he explained. “We could opt to supply a cheaper product but would never go down that road because we believe there can never be any compromise on that kind of safety issue.” “One of the other advantages of using our on-line services is the fast turn-round we offer on deliveries,” Andy added. “We appreciate that our customers can’t afford to be waiting for the products they need to do the job.” The range of products on offer is extensive. Top sellers at present include the Galaxy Door Restrictor for French Doors. Andy said: “We are selling a lot of these, possibly because of the high winds we constantly get these days.” Also in big demand are the Anti Snap & Anti Bump (UAP+ Zero Lift) door cylinders which made big headlines last year. These BS Kitemark & SBD approved products have been fitted to more than 1,000 doors in the last 12 months. The online services include a helpful FAQ and Technical Support section, plus Live Chat and a newly introduced Forum where customers can exchange information. Private firms better at running prisons A study by centre-right think tank Reform, says 10 out of 12 privately-run prisons had lower reoffending rates among those serving 12 months or more than comparable public jails. Last year, the government signalled a move away from wholesale privatisation in England and Wales. Privately-managed prisons were introduced in the UK in the 1990s and there are currently 14 private prisons in England and Wales. Report author
‘currently 14 private prisons in England’
Will Tanner said: “Private contractors outperform comparable public sector prisons on both cost and quality, delivering better value for money for the taxpayer. “In addition, the vast majority of contracted prisons have lower reoffending rates than similar public sector prisons for both long and short term prisoners, a key government objective.” Reform recommended that all prisons should be subject to competition. It also called for the end to national pay bargaining for prison officers with pay and conditions to be set locally by governors.
PREMIER SECURITY WELCOMES VIP VISITORS Premier Security welcomed Stephen Hester, RBS Chief Executive to its Sevenoaks HQ in February. The company, which includes Gatwick Airport among its customers, installs and services intruder alarms, CCTV, automatic gates, external perimeter protection and safes, locks and grilles for residential and commercial use. Founders, Vince and Lynn Humphreys, are building the company to pass on to their three daughters. Last year, they invested £100,000 in building a state of the art showroom, and revamped both the company website and brochures. Vince said: “As a company that has banked with NatWest since its inception over 25 years ago we feel Stephen’s
visit reflects a positive move for the RBS group to understand SMEs in greater depth.” The visit also included a meeting with local MP Michael Fallon, Minister for Business & Enterprise, and a round table discussion which gave the region’s SMEs the chance to put questions on local business and finance issues. Stephen Hester said, “I met with a number of our business customers who are playing a vital role in the economy here. It is encouraging for me to see that our relationship managers are really building the rapport with these customers that is crucial to knowing the needs of individual SMEs and
rebuilding the trust between businesses and our bank.” He said he was encouraged by the dedication he had witnessed in a local branch to customer service in dealing with the personal finance needs of the community. “I have made it clear that RBS must now ensure that our culture is always focussed on our customers and, on today’s evidence, we are well positioned to do that through the attitude and efforts of our frontline”. After the visit, Vince Humphreys commented, “The Premier team enjoyed welcoming both Stephen Hester and Michael Fallon
to our newly refurbished workplace. We are privileged that they recognised us as a forward-thinking enterprise and chose us as one of the companies they wanted to meet as part of this important initiative.”

fitted alarms and checked gardens and alleyway security. Questionnaires were completed by several homeowners, giving officers information with which to plan future patrols and operations. Residents were given crime prevention advice
and convicted offenders and people on bail were checked to ensure they were adhering bail conditions. Officers made 25 referrals to various housing associations and the fire service over the three day period. This will see vulnerable residents and properties revisited in a bid to
make the area safer. Funding for the window and door alarms was provided by the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership . Housing officers from Birmingham city council were also patrolling the area to identify vulnerable council property.

Police Enforcer puts Vista Panels’ GRP composite doorset to the test! Much has been said and many claims made about the strength (or otherwise) of composite doors. Indeed, there’s one company claiming that a GRP composite door collapses in a shower of polyurethane foam with a few good knocks with a police issue ‘Enforcer’. Well, it is certainly not the case with Distinction’s Nan Ya GRP composite door. Vista Panels’ Managing Director, Keith Sadler tells more: “There is an issue with the Distinction’s door blank: but it is actually about the difficulty the police have in gaining access to premises using the door. While the door blank is important, so is the quality of the components used in manufacture - as is the skill in fabrication. Vista’s 17 years of experience in manufacturing quality doorsets is there for all to see when the Greater Manchester Police’s finest attack the doorset with an Enforcer!” Vista Panels has been working with Greater
Manchester Police, supplying them with doorsets, so their teams can practise gaining entry to premises where GRP composite doors are installed.
“While it’s not pleasant seeing a quality doorset being attacked in this way, we’re well aware of the need for the police to find a way to defeat the door’s integrity and we’re very happy to work with them and supply doorsets for them to practise on,” Keith explained. Together with Distinction’s Chris Champion, Keith was invited to view a practice session at GMP’s test area and to help the teams understand the door construction and how the police can gain entry in the quickest possible way. “I believe our input has been helpful to the Greater Manchester Police and we are happy to continue supplying doorsets for their sessions. Needless to say, the public can be confident that their Vista manufactured doorset, featuring Distinction’s door blank, is very secure and gaining entry is both noisy and requires specialist tools, making it difficult for the opportunist burglar,” Keith said.
Combined Success from Sterling Locks with coloured & combination padlock sales Combination padlocks are attracting purchasers who find keys an inconvenience or who want to provide access to multiple code holders. Sterling Locks has a significant range of combination locks that complement its traditional keyed lines. Looking beyond the wintery weather to the late Spring and Summer, Sterling reports that customers are particularly interested in combination plus colour in padlocks. Bank Holidays means holiday travel, while lighter longer days mean people get on their bikes, use the patio furniture and break out the barbeque. All these items need securing. But it doesn’t have to be a chore, especially when consumers can choose a colourful padlock that suits their style with a

combination option that means they don’t have to worry about keys. Sterling Locks offers aluminium, brass, stainless steel, laminated steel, TSA luggage combination padlocks and locking bolts. One of the most popular is the 4 Dial Combination with its brass body, hardened steel chrome plated shackle. It has 10,000 resettable combinations with a strong double locking mechanism. CONTEMPORARY ALUMINIUM Alongside this traditional brass favourite is a very contemporary Aluminium combination padlock which combines great colour and is generating great sales. Anodised aluminium creates a really attractive durable padlock which is strong and corrosion-resistant. In
today’s market, it’s good to be able to offer consumers choice that suits the season and meets the needs of both those with traditional and modern tastes. Retailers will be happy to hear that all these padlocks combine a great price with a good margin and come with Sterling’s usual reliable good service. APECS COMES TO THE UK In last month’s LSj, we introduced readers to the innovative Russian company APECS. This month we look at how in 2009 the company took the decision – despite the gloomy economic situation – to penetrate into the UK market. The long-established British market admittedly represented a major challenge for APECS, but it was one they were determined to enter. Again, this entailed detailed market research as well as getting to grips with yet another different culture. NO REGRETS To ensure they were at the heart of the business world, APECS established an office in Chelsea Harbour, London, headed up by Anastasia Goncharova, daughter of the company’s founder, Andrey. “Perhaps it was not the best time economically but we have absolutely no regrets,” said Anastasia, who was familiar with the UK having studied here. “We were absolutely certain that the need was here and that we could meet that need in our own way, with our own products. We were also confident that we could develop new products to match changing demand, in both traditional and increasingly high-tech markets,” she explained. “Our track record in product research and development has always stood us in good stead. For us, this was a fascinating market. At first people were sceptical of us, because after all, we are Russian and very different from the British!” she smiled. “But once they begin to understand our passion, our commitment and our knowledge, any barriers come down and I am happy to say that we have formed some great relationships with our UK customers.”
16
MAR/APR 2013
As a woman, Anastasia definitely raised a few eyebrows in the traditional, maledominated UK industry. “I think it was maybe a shock for me to walk into a meeting wearing a red dress and heels,” she laughed, “but once people recognised my background and knowledge, there were never any problems.” ENHANCED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT In the last year, APECS UK operation has concentrated on building a stronger engineering team, enhancing its product development to ensure it can offer the right products to a high quality standard but at a competitive price. The company has sensibly divided its offering into three categories: APECS BASIC, which includes products featuring simple, traditional solutions at high quality and affordable prices; APECS
STANDARD, which covers the majority of its product range and offers the customer highest value for money; and APECS PREMIER, which offers the highest performance attainable through excellent design and utilising the most modern technologies. “We regularly add new products that closely follow the market trends,” said Anastasia. “But we will do our utmost to meet your specific needs, using our extensive experience and market knowledge.” The new APECS product catalogue is now available to download (www.apecs. co.uk) but if the product you seek is not there, it can be manufactured.

SSAIB reveals plans for 2013 as registrations reach new peak SSAIB has unveiled a range of new initiatives for the coming year. These include further enhancements to its new website, an easier online application system, and an electronic auditing package. The upcoming moves, announced by SSAIB Chief Executive Geoff Tate, follow a bumper 2012, with the number of SSAIB-registered organisations approaching a record 1500. These include companies providing electronic security, intruder alarms, manned protection and fire detection systems, as well as new services such as telecare systems for the social alarms sector. SSAIB is the only certification body to have
gained UKAS approval for its Telecare Services Scheme, introduced last autumn. Geoff Tate has previewed upcoming changes to SSAIB’s expanding website services, with features designed to improve functionality for visitors and importantly reduce its registered firms’ costs. An online application system is intended to make it easier for firms to apply for registration and enhance SSAIB’s applications processing. A new electronic auditing package has also been developed to reduce the volume of paperwork and SSAIB auditors will be equipped with a hand-held device allowing checklists and audit reports to be completed
more quickly and easily. “Responding to demand driven by the number of ‘void properties’ currently requiring security, our recently introduced Temporary Alarm Systems scheme has already caught the eye of insurance companies, a number of which have expressed interest in the scheme,” adds Tate. “Some have already begun specifying the scheme to their clients supplying protection for void properties. “Another exciting new scheme is our BAFE SP 205 certification service. This scheme deals with the certification of companies or individuals carrying out fire risk assessments and we have already presented the first
company with its certificate. SSAIB is also now reaping the sound business benefits of its move into a new office in 2012. The acquisition of a freehold premises in Whitley Bay, near Newcastle, was completed at a competitive price, in the face of rising rent for its previous leased facilities, and means SSAIB’s accommodation has been expanded, but with costs that are now fixed - further good news for our registered firms.” www.ssaib.org
Surveillance statistics highlight security value of CCTV & spy cameras Government research released in February found that, despite predictions that the economic downturn would encourage a higher level of law-breaking and criminal activity, crime fell by eight percent in 2012. One of the factors in this report which stunned most people was the lower rate of property crime, with many speculating that the higher levels of security that people are choosing to install are having a real effect on the number of burglaries and cases of vandalism which occur. This is a direct contradiction to the beliefs of many criminologists, who state that property crime is one of the first figures to rise during such times of economic volatility. Many people across the country, disturbed by all-too-common accounts of burglary and intrusion, have taken to installing CCTV cameras and complex covert spy gadgets across their property to put off criminals from
18
MAR/APR 2013
targeting their home and to catch and hopefully prosecute anyone who attempts to break in or damage their property. The installations, which can be as basic or extensive as the homeowner desires, are becoming more popular in many residential areas as neighbours club together to look out for one another and create a community spirit that has been missing for the last few decades.
‘property crime is one of the first figures to rise’ Home security on the exterior of a house can involve many different spy cameras and other devices used to detect the presence of unwanted intruders. From fitting a video peephole viewer which magnifies the faces of those at the front door, to fixing a full CCTV system to the outside of the house in order to
capture every inch of the property from different angles, there are many different approaches which people can take, from the basic to the complex. For the interior of the house, many homeowners choose to fit alarm systems which can be triggered by sensors. Motion-activated alarms can be fitted to a wall or simply stood on a hard surface, masquerading as a clock, an image on the wall or even a light switch. These hidden spy cameras help to catch out those who are sneaking around at night unwanted, and they don’t spoil the aesthetic of the home. These types of cameras can also be fixed to the interior of a car, so that if the car should be stolen, the camera can be activated to immediately track the culprit. TOP MARKS FOR MLA’s MODULAR COACHING/BLI EXAM The Training committee and the MLA Board members have been concerned for some time that there are a lot of very accomplished trading locksmiths who attend regional meetings, Expo, Wholesalers open days etc. yet are not Members of the MLA or BLI. Research has taught us that although many of them would like to join, that there seems to be a fear of the unknown and perhaps a little trepidation in the lack of confidence that they might fail the exam. Beside these, there are many company employees and existing BLI student/ advanced student members who for similar unfounded reasons are also frightened of taking the exam. Also, there has been a concern that some of those who have taken the BLI exam in the past and failed parts of it were more than capable of success, but were overcome on the day by nerves. Perhaps not surprising considering that for many of them this may have been their first visit to the MLA’s HQ. With all this in mind it was decided that in line with other institutions, we would not only allow the exam to be taken in a modular fashion, thereby allowing people to take the elements they wanted, in the order they wanted and at the speed they felt comfortable with, but also introduced an alternative to the standard BLI exam, which over two days included refresher coaching prior to each module, in order to help settle the candidates down and to point out exactly what the invigilator was looking for in a successful pass. The first of these modular coaching/BLI exams took place in December 2012 over two days with a total of seven candidates in attendance. They were a mixed bunch consisting of existing students, company employees and long trading self-employed locksmiths who wish to become Approved company members. Prior to each module the candidates are settled down with a cup of tea for an informal chat and refresher instructions/demonstrations and a lecture appertaining to the module in question with some hands on practice if applicable. A full demonstration of the key making is
20
MAR/APR 2013
given and good and bad examples of the lock opening and lock fitting are shown, after which each individual module is carried out under strict exam conditions. Two modules are completed each day, and lunch is provided. Candidates can (and indeed in this instance did) choose to only take certain elements rather than all four if they so wish. We were delighted to note that all the December attendees passed with very high marks.
All seven passed the written paper with high marks, the lowest being 74% and one achieved 97 %. Of those doing the opening (six) all completed the task in under 25 minutes with one of them picking open a Chubb 3G 114 in less than 14 minutes. Of the three fitting a Euro Mortice dead lock, all made a very neat professional job with only one of them losing points for a slightly oversized cut out for the Euro cylinder - but a good shape none the less. The four making keys to a Chubb 110 lock by hand were good with very acceptable pass marks, even though not quite perfect, except for one whose finished key was an excellent piece of engineering IMHO, for which he achieved a well-deserved 100% pass mark. To sum up, all the students felt that settling them down at the start and alleviating their nerves and understanding what we were looking for as a finished result, were major factors in their success. Below is a quote received from one of the candidates in an email after the event. “Just wanted to say thanks again for all you did to make the two days such a success. I'm delighted to have 'made the grade' and feel the time and money I've invested over the year with the MLA has been really worthwhile; the training and support has been fantastic. I'll start working towards getting approved company status as soon as possible. My only regret is that nerves got the better of me and I had to resort to the drill for the opening!” So there you have it in a nut shell. If you have any doubts as to your ability to pass the exam, or concerns over what exactly is involved, then this might be the way forward for you. You can of course still sit the exam the old way if you wish but for just a few extra pounds this might be the best choice for you. For details on how to take the exam in this fashion, simply contact MLA head office on 01327 262255 or e-mail

TRACKit 247: a modest investment with a powerful payback London Locksmiths Dennis Security, based in Walthamstow, London recently installed TRACKit247 vehicle trackers into its fleet of vans – and the busy firm is already finding it a valuable investment. Matthew Stokes of Dennis Security told LSj: “ By investing in vehicle tracking I know where my staff and equipment are at any given time, allowing me to deploy employees effectively to call outs and emergencies as they arise. We have saved more than the actual cost of the unit by not having to turn work away, as we know where the locksmiths are at any given time - and by looking in the history we can tell what jobs are completed. We have also found after sales back-up to be excellent.” Vehicle tracking is now an essential management tool, enabling businesses to control costs and gain competitive advantage in today’s tough economic climate.
CUT FUEL COSTS & INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY Peter Roback of TRACKit247 commented: “There are many reasons why companies use our tracking solution for their vehicles, plant and machinery, the most obvious being if an asset is stolen, it can be recovered with minimal disruption to the business. But by investing in vehicle tracking, businesses can also reduce fuel expenditure – major factor nowadays and increase staff productivity.” TRACKit247 offer a low cost tracking solution with low monthly subscription, with no activation costs and no contract. The tracking devices work straight out of the box and are easy to use and easy to implement. Tracking can be via innovative web based control panel and from any mobile device such as iPhone/ Smart Phones/ iPad or Tablet devices, allowing you to TRACK LIVE and view history such as speed, mileage and
locations from anywhere in the world for up to a year. Packed with advanced features such as motion alerts, geo fence zoning and panic button, TRACKit247 trackers are a costeffective solution for any business, while offering functionality and flexibility with low running costs. Units start from as little as £99.00 with tracking cost on average £2.50 per week per device – a modest investment for such a powerful pay-back. For a FREE demo or more information, visit

With 12% of deliveries failing first time and £ millions lost through missed deliveries, the smart doorbell that rings your mobile is launched.
We have all experienced it – the card through the door with ‘Sorry we missed you…’ message. The five minutes we pop out coinciding with the five minutes the postman delivers that all important package. For small businesses, it is not only the inconvenience this causes, but the consequential impact on the business and the cost in time and money to arrange the redelivery. Recent statistics estimated that over 12% of deliveries fail first time, costing the industry £1bn in redelivery charges.
However, help is at hand, with an intelligent doorbell, Fireco’s Smartbel, that calls a homeowner’s mobile when rung. Heralded as a revolution by small business owners, those who shop online, and relatives and carers of elderly living alone, the Smartbel doorbell allows them to ‘answer’ their doorbell and speak to the visitor remotely. For the small business owner this means being able to ask the delivery man to leave the parcel in a secure place, with a neighbour or being
able to rush back to sign for it. The two most important things to small businesses, especially in those early days are time and money. Smartbel, which recently launched into the UK, allows you to never miss a delivery while providing additional security to your business as the visitor cannot detect whether you are at home or away. Smartbel operates using a sim card and existing mobile phone technology and retails at just £129.99 Find out more at www.firecoltd.com

ENCOURAGE THE NEXT GENERATION, SAYS VICTOR More young people seeking a worthwhile career should consider becoming a locksmith, says Victor Southern of Lockdecoders Ltd. Victor believes that too many youngsters today pursue an often pointless university degree with few prospects for the future, instead of concentrating on training for trades that offer many excellent long term opportunities. “There is a serious shortage of many trades - from locksmiths to plumbers to chefs,” he said. “The locksmith industry
certainly needs to attract more young people to take up proper training. There may not be the formal fully time-served apprenticeships that existed in my young days but there are excellent training schemes available so there is no shortage of learning opportunities for those who are determined to make the effort.” Lockdecoders actively encourages young people through its own trainee Locksmiths awards competition, launched five years ago and judged by a distinguished panel of industry experts.
“We view this as an investment for the future,” said Victor. “Any business is about people so whatever we can do to ensure we have the right people in the industry, has to be a good idea.”
The winner of the latest Lockdecoders award is Amy Poss, who works at Peterborough-based City Locks. A delighted Amy was stunned when the judges announced their unanimous verdict as she never expected to win.
CRACKING DOWN ON LEGAL AID DODGERS Tough, new enforcement action – including vehicle-clamping -will be taken against convicted criminals who do not pay their legal bills when they can afford to. New measures to tackle criminals who hide their wealth, or who refuse to cooperate with financial assessments, are being introduced after it was revealed that only about 20% of the amount criminals are ordered to pay back is currently collected. With around £700 million a year spent on Crown Court cases, more must be done to make sure money is recovered where people can afford to pay.
22
MAR/APR 2013
This will include: • Actively pursuing criminals for their entirety of their bill if they refuse to provide the financial information necessary to perform a means test; • Amending legal aid contribution orders if hidden assets or earnings later come to light so criminals pay the full amount they can afford. New measures will also be introduced that will allow vehicles to be clamped and
sold if criminals fail to make the ordered payments toward their legal aid costs. Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said: “It is scandalous that each year innocent taxpayers pay more than £20 million towards the defence of criminals who can afford to pay for themselves. This cannot be allowed to continue. Legal aid is not free – it is taxpayers’ money.”

TIME FOR LOCKSMITHS TO SEIZE OPPORTUNITIES While none of the experts is predicting growth in the door and window industry, there are growing opportunities for locksmiths in the security market. Alan Bell of ERA, part of grouphomesafe, talks about some of the trends and opportunities offered to locksmiths in the retro-fit area. The classic theory is that property crime rises faster in times of economic strife and, although at the beginning of the year, government statistics showed a surprise 8% fall in crime last year, those working closely with crime prevention bodies are still predicting an increase in crime as a result of cuts in government benefits. There are also leading academics who say that there is still a strong relationship between crime and the economy, on the basis that the overall level of property crime largely reflects the size of the market for stolen or illicit goods, which in time of recession expands. While the threat of property crime is always there, awareness tends to vary according to the amount of high-profile media coverage we see. Typical of this was the flurry of media interest in 2012 when an edition of BBC TV Yorkshire’s Inside Out highlighted the situation in West Yorkshire which has the highest burglary rate in the
The Vectis Plus 4.
Alan Bell.
UK. The programme discussed the ease with which criminals can snap a standard Euro cylinder. The story, which revealed the extent to which criminals were sharing their ‘expertise’ in snapping cylinder locks, was taken up by print and broadcast media across the country. The nature of this type of crime, and the style and level of press coverage, can have a direct impact on the sale of security products as the public becomes aware of new threats. Whether in reality levels of crime have fallen or will rise, there is certainly an increased awareness amongst the general public of security issues, fuelled by police initiatives, insurance requirements and, of course, media coverage. For the locksmith industry, this awareness, coupled with tightened household budgets creates an area of opportunity. While householders looking to increase the security of their property may not have the money to spare for new doors they can be open to solutions that make their existing doors more secure. The security industry made great strides in 2012 in developing standards. For retro-fit situations, we saw the introduction of the new Technical Specification 007 (TS 007), produced by the Door & Hardware
To read more, visit www.locksmithjournal.co.uk
Federation and the Glass and Glazing Federation which was designed specifically to address the vulnerability of lock cylinders. Meeting these standards, ERA introduced a number of products, including the Lockguard handle, which meets the standard’s two-star rating and the High Security handle, uniquely designed to protect the cylinder from attack. Offering the best protection against cylinder bumping or snapping is the Vectis Plus, which does away completely with the cylinder and meets all the requirements of PAS 23/24 and Secured by Design with a five-lever lock operation. It is products such as these that signal the opportunities in the retro-fit market. It will require a degree of customer re-education and we shouldn’t just rely on media scare stories to increase awareness of new products. The great opportunity for locksmiths called in to repair or replace existing locks is to offer their customers enhanced levels of security. Like-for-like replacement of the traditional mortice lock/nightlatch may be the easy option, but it is far from the best solution. Security technology has moved on to such a degree that we can now offer customers cylinderfree solutions such as the Vectis Plus, the new British Standard Kitemarked Fortress MPL, high-security handles and anti-bump cylinders – a whole range of solutions which will increase add value to the locksmith’s offer by delivering heightened levels of security to their customers. Security technology moves on all the time. The market has already seen the introduction
of keyless technology which is firmly established in the commercial sector and in multi-occupancy dwellings. In reality, in the domestic sector, this technology is unlikely to have a significant impact in the foreseeable future. Going forward, there will be a closer tie-in between electronics and locking systems and the next stage is likely to see the development of electronic fobs for remote locking of doors and windows. Already firmly established in the automotive sector, this is likely to be less of a culture shock for the average householder than keyless technology. For the immediate future, however, the emphasis in the market will be on offering enhanced levels of security to overcome issues such as cylinder bumping, snapping or drilling. In addition to the products we already offer, ERA will continue to introduce new products aimed at the retro-fit market which will enable locksmiths to continue to offer their customers looking to upgrade the security of their homes an affordable, effective solutions.

Police target North Bradford North Bradford NPT is targeting homes in Heaton, North Bradford, in a crime prevention initiative. The operation comes in response to recent crimes in the area, where attackers have forced their way into properties to steal goods. Officers worked with Incommunities to fit sash jammers and bolts to properties in the area, and the crime prevention
van had officers on hand to answer any questions about home security. Officers also issued warning letters to people known to be involved in antisocial behaviour and fitting vehicles with anti-theft number plate screws. These crime prevention materials have been paid for by funds seized directly from
‘Crime provention initiative’
criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act. West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, said: “Days of action such as these highlight the value of neighbourhood policing teams. I am committed to neighbourhood policing through their ability to work with local people to reduce the chances of them becoming victims of crime.”
West Midlands Police sign up to CheckMEND scheme West Midlands Police were one of the first forces in the country to embrace a new code of practice aimed at slamming the door in the face of thieves trying to sell stolen goods. A Home Office Code of Practice encourages forces to get second hand stores signed up to a scheme where they check all items offered up for sale against the CheckMEND database which logs if goods have been recorded as lost or stolen. The force has hundreds of stores such as Cash Converters, Cash Generator, Cex and other independent second hand stores signed up to the scheme. Officers across the force attended second hand stores, schools and shopping centres registering goods onto the immobilise database for free. Each of the stores who have signed up check items offered for sale against the CheckMEND site. Each search generates a unique certificate number. This can be
issued to a potential buyer to prove that at the time of purchase the item was not reported lost or stolen and no adverse information was recorded against it.
‘the more the public register their goods on immobilise, the more effective the system will be’ David Bursey from Byte size Solutions in Kings Heath, Birmingham said: “Now we can use CheckMEND we can buy items from people who come in off the street. We have been dubious about doing that in the past because we have not been able to trace the history of the item. This has
opened up new possibilities in how we can conduct our business that is of real benefit to us and our customers. “ DC Vanessa Lewis from Force CID who is heading up the project to get all West Midlands second hand stores signed up said: “Our officers have been passionate about getting stores signed up as one of the main ways we can stop the sale of stolen goods and ultimately deter burglars and thieves. The more the public register their goods on immobilise, the more effective the system will be.”
A YouTube video explaining how the system works is available below or at this link: http://youtu.be/LNx-5eoaXGA

MUSIC & THEATRE WERE TURNING POINTS FOR THIS TRAINEE LOCKSMITH Most of us have a turning point in our lives: but Isle of Man trainee locksmith – (AKA the Wicked Queen), Jack Divers, has had several – even though he is just 20 years old. LSj finds out more… When Jack was just seven, his musician Dad handed him a trumpet – and from then on, music became a major part of Jack’s life. Today, as well as trumpet he plays cornet and flugelhorn, which – Jack says – “are all pretty much the same instruments, just slightly different shapes!” Over the years, he has played in brass bands and as a musician for theatre productions. But it wasn’t always a good experience. “When I was 11 and in high school, I got picked on for playing trumpet because it just wasn’t ‘cool’, Jack explained. “It was a bad time for me but I stuck at it and gradually got my confidence back after I got to 17 and started doing drama at ‘A’ level. When I got an ‘A’ grade for my performance results, I thought – hey, maybe I can actually do this! It felt right, so I auditioned for an amateur theatre company which was doing ‘My Fair Lady’ – and got the part! “I met some great people, really enjoyed doing it and have not stopped doing theatre since.” IT’S A FAMILY THING It was inevitable that Jack would get involved in theatre. He told me, “Strangely, a couple of years before I started on stage, my Mum and sister were helping out with the crew backstage, doing propos, makeup, wardrobe, stage managing,” Jack added. “I used to just watch but thankfully, my Mum urged me to try for the audition. And it’s a real family thing – as my Dad is usually in the pit playing sax!” Jack also finds time to do gigs on the island most months with a couple of bands.

PERFORMING RESTORED MY CONFIDENCE This multi-talented lad, who has also learned dance routines and stagecraft, moved to the Isle of Man from Sheffield with his family when he was just two, says he loves performing because it is an escape, and it certainly helped restore his confidence after his experiences of being picked on at school.
‘You wouldn’t believe how satisfying it was for the ‘Wicked Queen’ to take her bow to the sound of all the kids booing! I knew then that I’d done a good job and the audience was happy’ “When you’re on stage, you are not you – you are someone else for a while,” he says. “You are dressed to play a part and people like to watch you – that’s what they have come to see. I was always considered weird at school because I was a bit crazy and would do funny voices, pretend to be a woman and so on. But now when I do this for theatre, that’s fine - because it is what people expect, it is all about entertaining the audience. When you hear an audience of 800 cheering because they are enjoying the show, all the months of hard work, rehearsals, sweat and tears all become worthwhile.” Jack’s most recent starring role was as the Wicked Queen in the Christmas panto, where he was a huge hit. “I was in full drag and played it like an actual woman, not a dame,” he said. “People would argue whether I was really a woman or in drag – and the best thing
of all was that the kids HATED me! You wouldn’t believe how satisfying it was for the ‘Wicked Queen’ to take her bow to the sound of all the kids booing ! I knew then that I’d done a good job and the audience was happy – and for me, that’s what matters – you really can’t beat that feeling.” Despite a very busy schedule with his work, music and theatre, Jack manages to spend some time with his partner, Abi, who is also originally from Yorkshire. He also finds time to cycle occasional just for fun - and he admits he clearly is still a bit ‘crazy’! “My friend and I like to unicycle up and down Douglas prom in a morphsuits – in fact, seeing someone on a unicycle in a morphsuit is now a recognised sight thanks to me and my friend!” he laughed.

LOCKSMITHING OFFERS HANDS-ON VARIETY Jack works full-time as a trainee locksmith at Fayle Safe Security, which is one of three locksmith companies on the Island and he enjoys his job. Why locksmithing? “When I left school I wasn’t sure about a career – I’d known university would be a waste of time and money for me. I wanted a practical job, where I could work full-time and acquire lifeskills – and have some challenges - not one that meant sitting in front of a computer all day. I saw an ad for a trainee locksmith, applied and got it, and am enjoying pushing forward with it ever since. “At Fayle Security we have been pretty busy. We always like to put the customer first and do all we can to give good service. The competition from the other two firms is not huge even on this small island, but we aren’t fighting for work – instead we actually help each other out when we can. We each have our specialities so it works out well.” The Isle of Man is a comparatively safe
place to live but it is not immune from crime, and the main concern residents have is personal security. We advise people on how best to keep their property, business and belongings safe,” Jack said. “One problem we have noticed lately is the theft of oil from exterior oil tanks,” he added. GOOD TRAINING IS IMPORTANT Jack’s boss, Calvin Fayle, handles most of the business’s auto locksmith work, but Jack does copy car keys and is looking to fit in some training so he improve these skills. “I am a big believer in good training,” said Jack, who recently attended an MLA course. “Being taught by someone like Calvin, who has such a lot of experience means a lot to me. We have all been to jobs where the previous lock has been fitted wrongly or is not up to standard for security – and that’s when proper training needs to be applied.” One of the aspects of locksmithing that
Jack enjoys is the variety it offers. “No two days are the same,” he said, “there is always something different, new products coming out and security is constantly improving. Also, I work with two top chaps! “We are really pushing engraving now and that is something I am enjoying dealing with, doing word and picture engraving on lots of things – from personalising microphones to engraving an ammunition shell….

Software developers team up with property developers for IP door-entry system Chelsea Creek is anew dockside development set in the heart of London where property developers St George have created an outstanding selection of highly specified apartments and penthouses set within a series of tranquil waterways and riverside dock. This new dockside collection is set to be one of London’s most prestigious addresses, with 24-hour concierge service, managed car parking, a luxury health spa with swimming pool and fitness centre, shops, bars and restaurants. St. George needed a system for a phased, multi-block development that could operate on a site-wide IP backbone. The system needed to offer complete flexibility in terms of the number of concierges and where they were located. As with most developments of this nature, being able to relocate the concierge as
28
MAR/APR 2013
the building work progresses is vital. An IP-based system now allows this by simply unplugging the RJ45 connector and moving the concierge PC to another location. In addition to this, the developers needed a customised operating system that would allow each individual block to start with apartment number one, but still using only one concierge handset. Typically, this type of development would require the concierges to have multiple handsets on their desk - a common problem with traditional systems and something the developers were keen to avoid. The system specified was IPervoice, Urmet’s IP door-entry platform. Urmet’s technical department in Italy set about making a number of bespoke changes to the software that would allow the
apartments in each block to start with a number one. This allows for multiple apartments starting with apartment one without the need for an additional prefix. Commenting on the overall project, Urmet’s Managing Director, Manji Gami, stated: “We had to make some fundamental changes to our software to allow for the one concierge and lots of blocks starting with apartment number one - everyone will understand that problem. Until IPervoice, we couldn’t have achieved that solution with any of our other systems.” The Urmet Group was established over 75 years ago and is the largest manufacturer of door-entry systems in Europe.

THE LOCKSMITHS’ EXHIBITION REVIEW The Securikey stand was a popular place to be at the fourth annual Locksmiths’ Exhibition in Nottingham on the 2nd and 3rd March. As well as displaying products representing their entire range of physical security solutions, Securikey also ran a promotion on the Keysafe 80 electronic key cabinet, launched at the show. The 50 complimentary Keysafe cabinets in the offer were quickly snapped up and additional orders have since followed, indicating that this is already a product in demand.
Also launched was the HS Post Box range. Visitors were impressed to learn that this hardwearing solution can be used as part of a master key system along
with other Securikey products, due to its integrated Euro Profile cylinder key lock case. As a result, locksmiths can offer their customers additional products that form part of a ‘one key’ home security solution. The stand’s in-built television screen was also a talking point, providing a great opportunity for the team to demonstrate the recently enhanced website and the numerous installer videos available from Securikey. Taylor, who is well-known throughout the locksmith industry. The Hampshirebased company specialises in the design, development and distribution of electronic door locks and access control units. One of the most fascinating products on show at LE was an electric spindle which enables existing latchsets and mortice nightlatches to be converted
to an access control device with minimum alteration to the door. Also on show for the first time was a new mortice sash lock which features an electrically-driven deadbolt - a motor lock without a motor! Two other products demonstrated at the show, the JC2460 Electric Escape Lock and the JC2465 Electric Sash Lock drew a lot of attention.
Both can be operated via a mobile phone. Production on these will commence later in the year. www.axxium.co.uk

Heritage crime, lighting out crime, planning and current design trends were on the agenda at Secured by Design’s annual training event which took place at the end of February in Leicestershire. This is the only national forum for professional development and update for ALOs and CPDAs and brings them together for two days to train and encourage them to share their experiences. Speakers included: David Zinzan, Deputy Chief Constable, Devon & Cornwall Police and ACPO Lead for Crime Prevention; Architect Matt Swanton from Re-Format who examined current design trends in architecture and whether there are conflicts with CPTED principles of territoriality and defensible space; Mark Harrison from English Heritage’s presentation was on prevention of heritage crime, development of inter-agency co-operation, strategies, intelligence collection and national guidance and how other agencies can utilise this. Christopher Tennant from Scott Brownrigg Planning looked at the role of the Planner and what changes the NPPF will bring. The event, which also hosted the SBD’S first “Great Debate” with representatives from criminology and the housing sector, was supported by an exhibition featuring test houses, partners and SBD member companies whose products meet SBD Standards. Among the exhibitors was the MLA, who said: “With crime reduction staff from all over the UK at this event, it was an excellent opportunity not only to promote the Master Locksmiths Association, but also to promote the use of MLA Approved Companies and Sold Secure Approved Products. “The latest MLA Handbook and Sold Secure Catalogue was literally flying off the shelves with police officers making a beeline for the MLA stand to get their latest update.” The Association also exhibited at the Policing and Security Show 2013 (formerly called the HOSDB Exhibition) earlier this year. “This was another event which provided useful opportunities for us to promote the MLA and its members to the significant number of police forces, military and government departments who attend, once again helping the Association cement itself as the leading trade association for the locksmithing industry,” the MLA added.

FIVE MARKETING AGENCIES - UNDER ONE ROOF ANDREW SCOTT, MD of leading marketing company, Purplex, discusses how a full service agency will help you get the right “marketing mix”. The way people consume media has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Today, they are likely to be on their smartphones checking social media sites, searching the web on their tablets and receiving emails on the go; but despite the fast pace of digital technology, people still like to read a physical object such as a print magazine or a ‘proper’ letter; it can, after all, be tiresome reading everything on a screen. To ensure maximum marketing results, companies need to display their message across multiple channels. Traditional marketing is still important: for instance, you still need a presence in quality trade magazines and direct mail to generate leads, but you also need an up-to-date website, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts, email marketing - and more. Covering all these bases and getting the right ‘marketing mix’ can be a challenge. Large organisations often have entire marketing departments; but what about the SMEs that make up a huge percentage of the locksmith industry? It is not always viable for a manufacturing firm to employ a marketing team. Many will have one or two staff looking after marketing, but expecting them to be PR experts, web-designers, graphic designers, email marketing
experts, social media managers and look after the prospect data is a big ask. To be done well, each of these disciplines is a specialist job, and one person trying to be all these marketing roles is in danger of spreading themselves too thin.
‘Employing specialists gives better results’ Many firms, therefore, choose to outsource marketing activities to an agency. Employing experts in a particular marketing field will give better results without the hassle of having to manage activity in-house, enabling you to concentrate on running your business. The main difficulty comes when trying to conduct a cohesive strategy. Marketing works better when it is properly integrated,; for instance your online marketing should mirror what’s happening offline, so ideally you need the same company managing your website and looking after your PR and direct marketing. Most agencies specialise in one area of marketing; they may be a web-design company or a small PR team, but few can offer all these disciplines in-house, meaning the client either juggles multiple agencies or misses out on important areas
of marketing. Rather than focussing on one area of marketing, Purplex has no less than five agencies under one roof. We employ 26 staff consisting of teams specialising in PR and media, creative design, web and digital, and direct marketing. We operate from a closelyknit office and all the departments feed off each other and share ideas – and as a result our clients benefit from integrated campaigns with a consistent message.
‘Powerful strategies to put you ahead’ Say for example, a client is launching a new product. Typically, we will promote this via direct mail and email to generate leads, produce the stories and adverts to appear in the trade press, update the website with new content, promote it on social media and produce new marketing literature. All this activity is produced simultaneously by experienced teams who have worked closely together for a number of years - and the client enjoys much faster and better results than if they were to commission these projects to various agencies. Another benefit of working with Purplex is our industry knowledge. We specialise in the broad building products industry and when it comes to producing a marketing strategy, we not only know your products and your market, but also your competitors and potential customers. Our team works with companies throughout the supply chain and are experts at devising powerful strategies and catapulting companies ahead of their competitors. Ultimately, marketing is becoming ever more complex and you need to ensure your strategy works across all platforms. Employing a full-service marketing agency with an industry background such as Purplex, can make all the difference. Purplex Marketing: Tel. 01934 808132 or visit www.purplexmarketing.co.uk

ABUS launches latest award-winning innovation: the TVAC 80000B Digital Door Viewer Building on its reputation as providers of the complete security solution, ABUS’ latest award winning product, the TVAC 80000B Digital Door Viewer, has now won the prestigious Plus X Award 2013, the world’s biggest innovation prize for technology, sport and lifestyle. Recognised in five categories, the Digital Door Viewer takes the prestigious Plus X Award 2013 ranking “Excellent” for Innovation, High Quality Design, Ease of Use and Functionality. The TVAC 80000B can easily be fitted in moments to any existing door peep hole making squinting through a glass spyhole a thing of the past. The TVAC 80000B streams live images of the person at your door onto a 2.4” screen providing a clear, colour image of your caller thanks
to its HD resolution (720p) and display featuring zoom function. In contrast to conventional glass spy holes, residents do not need to “glue” an eye to the peephole while holding the other eye shut in order to see something making it the simple choice for the elderly, glasses wearers or those with height restrictions. The monitor is activated with the push of a button, allowing residents to see who is at the door: with both eyes and at a convenient distance from the door. The digital door viewer offers additional security particularly when children and seniors live in the home: that’s because the image on the monitor is easy to make out even if you are not very tall and have to look at it from below!
For additional security three still images are taken which can be stored on an optional microSD card making it possible to later reconstruct who stood in front of the door and when, an invaluable tool for preserving evidence and generating peace of mind (for securing evidence, clarifying stalking cases, etc.). Thanks to its simple operation, complete scope of delivery, and easy mounting, the HD spy hole is very suitable for overthe-counter sales. The scope of delivery includes everything that you need to retrofit the door – including an optical spy hole, batteries, and a mount.

The new SBL330 code buttons have ‘no feel’ which eliminates the possibility of experienced ‘lock pickers’ from discovering the code. SBL330 is available with knob or lever operation.

BURTON SAFES MD IS NEW EUROSAFE UK CHAIRMAN If there is one issue that safe companies need to be increasingly aware of, it is ensuring that both the trade and consumers are genuinely buying what they believe they are buying – and not something else entirely, says Ben Lewis, MD of Burton Safes and new chairman of Eurosafe UK. Almost in parallel with the ongoing food chain scandal, consumers buying safes – or other security equipment - must feel confident in their purchases; and at the same time, the trade must have a level playing field on which to compete fairly, says Ben. With fellow director Jeremy Elson, Ben acquired Burton Safes two years ago following the retirement of the former owners, Norman and Hilary Berry, who started the business from scratch over 20 years ago. From its Huddersfield base, Burton Safes now supplies one of the most extensive ranges of safes available in the UK and Ireland, offering Eurograde Safes up to Grade 7, Fire & Data safes, Deposit Safes, Key Safes, Free Standing Safes, Cupboard and Furniture Safes, Underfloor Safes, Wall Safes, Medical Cabinets, Security Cabinets, Cash Handling Solutions and Strongrooms up to Eurograde 12. The company can also custommake safes to individual customer requirements. Products are supplied via a network of more than 200 stockists and an additional 500 re-sellers. With an impressive number of accreditations, including membership of Eurosafe UK, the Master Locksmiths Association, ESSA, SBD and the Health
& Safety Safe Contractor scheme, Burton Safes also holds an ISO 9001 certificate from the LPCB who are UKAS approved.
‘Products must be of the right spec’ Ben Lewis believes firmly that authentic accreditations and product testing from reliable institutions such EFSG members (ECBS, SBSC, CNPP, VDS, ICIM) and the LPCB as are important. He says that they are needed both from an ethical business point of view, and also because more and more insurance companies - who write the rules and drive sales - now insist on them. “We have recognised that our products being up to the right specification and accreditations help in achieving that,” said Ben. “It is very important that fire and security products are properly tested to ensure they do what they claim.” BENCHMARK FOR SAFE TESTING As new Eurosafe UK chairman, Ben would like to see a single European benchmark for testing of safes, again to provide that level playing field for the trade, and to protect consumers. “Consumers in general are not likely to
know very much about these products themselves,” he said. “So it is up to us to offer tested products that they can trust.” As well as products made in the UK, Burton Safes also uses a number of overseas manufacturers. “It is easy for some people in the industry to knock and be sceptical about goods made overseas,” Ben said. “But it does all come back to proper standards, reliable testing - and being able to substantiate any claims made in marketing those products.” LATEST ADDITION –THE EUROVAULT ATLAS February this year saw the introduction of the Eurovault Atlas covering the highest end of the security safe market. All tested by SSF and certified by SBSC in Sweden to EN1143-1 Grades IV, V, VI & VII, the Eurovault Atlas is also AIS (Association of Insurance Surveyors) approved.
‘big, sturdy, heavy range of safes’ “The Atlas lives up to its name – it is a big, sturdy, heavy range of safes that will stop the most determined of burglars,” says Steve Keogh, Burton Safes newlyappointed Business Development Director. “At the pinnacle of the range is the Grade VII, the only safe of its kind available in the UK today. We believe that no other manufacturer can offer a safe of such a high security level, something Burton Safes are very proud of,” added Steve, who formerly worked with Gunnebo for 10 years. The Eurovault Atlas replaces the outgoing Eurovault Fortis which has just been discontinued. www.burtonsafes.co.uk

AiS WELCOMES THE LOCKSMITH JOURNAL’S SAFES SECTION MICK FITCH is a Director and Chairman of the Association of Insurance Surveyors (AiS) and also Chairman of the AiS Safe Committee. The Safe Committee prepares a Safe Guide for AiS members and this has now been made this available to the broader safe industry and to locksmiths. AiS is pleased to see the introduction of a regular, dedicated SAFES section in The Locksmith journal and welcomes this useful opportunity for those working in the industry to access the latest information and news on safes, both in print and on-line. Mick is an insurance risk assessor. He was trained as a fire and security surveyor and for many years was Principal Burglary Surveyor for Lloyds Syndicates Survey Department and then Lloyds Underwriters Technical Services. When these were sold to an American company 13 years ago Mick left to establish a separate insurance
surveying company, Risk Management Surveys, but he continued to work for Lloyds Underwriters. He was backed by an insurance broker. When that company was taken over, Mick and a colleague set up another, similar company trading as Risktech. Mick has spent a lot of professional time surveying the jewellery trade, many of the main art and antique dealers, banks and building societies, cash centres, safe deposits etc. He has represented Lloyds Underwriters for many years on various committees involved with security including the BSI committees for alarms, high security alarms, safes and glass and still serves on the safe and glass committees. He is also a member of the BRE standing committee. He was on the European insurance CEA committee at the time when the other members decided there should be a European standard for safes. Marie Curie West Midlands hospice wins security award Secured by Design can claim another first following the opening of the new Marie Curie Hospice at Solihull in the West Midlands Police area. Built to comply with the exacting standards of Secured by Design, this four year-long project represents the leading edge of both hospice development and the practical application of Secured by Design. As a combination, these have created a warm, safe and relaxing environment inside and out - for patients, their families, visitors and members of staff. At the recent award ceremony, area police commander, Chief Superintendent Sally Bourner, presented the Secured by Design certificate to hospice manager, Liz Cottier. Liz said, “Our new
hospice has received such wonderful, positive comments from all who have visited since our opening. However, receiving the Secured by Design award will also be so reassuring to all who use our facilities.” Secured by Design Consultant, Mark Stokes, commented: “The Marie Curie West Midlands Hospice is a state of the art development that demonstrates how Secured by Design can be applied to the most sensitive of projects to deliver an environment that is both safe and secure.”
WHY EUROSAFE UK? Eurosafe is an association of safe manufacturers in mainland Europe established more than 25 years ago. In March 2011, a sister organisation, Eurosafe UK, was launched to represent the interests of British safe makers, and the suppliers and installers of safes and security containers. The primary objective of Eurosafe UK is to restore confidence in European standards for testing and rating cash safes, security cabinets, document fire safes and computer data safes. ALL ABOUT STANDARDS Eurosafe UK will encourage insurers, specifiers, buyers and users to choose cash safes tested and certified by the BRE/LPCB in the UK or European test houses affiliated with the European
Fire & Security Group (EFSG) or those products certified by the European Certification Board.Security (ECB.S). Member companies campaign to resist the lowering of security standards by manufacturing and supplying high quality, insurance approved products. Those companies specialising in refurbishing used safes undertake to adhere strictly to BS7582: 2005 Code of practice for reconditioning of used safes. Member companies are naturally encouraged to display the Eurosafe logo as a symbol of quality and ethical standards.
PRODUCT LOCATOR SHOWS THE SAFE WAY The new ECB•S Product Locator is a 190 page guide aimed at making products in the market more transparent. The booklet includes available types of safes of the different security levels, resistance grades and protection levels, along with useful details about dimensions and weights. certification according to European standards primarily secure storage units providing protection against burglary. There are also products for protection against fire and the physical protection of data. High security locks and burglar resistant doors complete the growing spectrum. With the Product Locator, the ECB neutral certification body says it aims to provide assistance in decision-making for the
purchase of secure storage units. Kristian Hess from ECB commented: “The motto is: `Quality provides Security`. Our task is also to inform: users must know that they run an extremely high risk when they use products that are not certified. Tests have clearly shown that these products do not fulfil the expected security demand.” Available free from: www.ecb-s.com/order

EUROSAFE UK AGM 2013 Bo Blomdahl, Chairman of Robur Safes in Sweden and current President of Eurosafe (parent organisation), was the guest speaker at a well-attended second AGM of Eurosafe UK on 13th February. Mr Blomdahl outlined possible changes to pan-European standards for testing and certifying cash and document fire safes, including the use of new power tools. Mike Palmer, founder Chairman of Eurosafe UK, handed over the chairmanship to Ben Lewis, MD of Burton Safes. Mike outlined the significant achievements that have been made since the Association’s formation in 2011. But he warned that there was still much more to do to promote Eurosafe UK’s aims and objectives to other companies in the industry, while improving awareness amongst risk surveyors, specifiers and customers.
Eurosafe UK is to host Eurosafe’s Annual General Assembly in Bristol at the end of May 2013, to be attended by up to 70 of the safe industry’s leading figures from both the UK and across Europe.

THE RISE AND FALL OF BRITISH SAFE MAKING They say, “If you remember the 60s, you probably weren’t there”. Well, if you were involved with the safe industry in the 60’s you would certainly remember being there - it was the heyday; the absolute zenith of British safe making. Chubb’s foundry in Wolverhampton worked flat out pouring molten aluminium into moulds to produce high security anti blow-pipe safes. Visitors to John Tann’s heavy equipment factory in Billericay witnessed massive vault doors under construction destined for Central Banks on the other side of the world. Young people queued at personnel offices eager for apprenticeships, knowing that once trained as safe makers, they would have a job for life. Discounts were rare and margins were high, allowing for generous investment in research and design programmes. British safes were rightly regarded as the best in the world and exports flourished. They had never had it so good and understandably, there was an element of arrogance and complacency. Chubb swallowed up Hobbs Hart and in the latter part of the 60’s, acquired their major competitor, Chatwood Milner. John Tann merged with Ratner and Stratford to consolidate their strong position in the market. Competition was fierce but there was never any suggestion of a price war. Instead each company vied to produce better safes than their rivals. Developments included oxide nuggets, glass plates, random re-lockers, isolator bolt-work mechanisms and expensive copper inserts. Design consultants gave safes a more contemporary look; brochures became thicker and glossier. Who could have predicted that in just two decades it would all be gone?

Chief Surveyors were called upon to make value judgements, comparing one model of safe with another to determine which should have the highest cash rating. They would be invited to drawing offices to review designs at the earliest stage. They witnessed factory tests and were even encouraged to pick up tools and wield them themselves. However, there were complaints. They were insurers, not safe engineers. Why should they be called upon to assess the effectiveness of one design over another? Why could there not be a British Standard for testing and evaluating safes? Josh Levy, head of J W Levy & Son, probably one of the best known men in the safe industry at that time, campaigned vigorously against these proposals. His assertion was that the moment you introduced formal standards you would strangle competition, with everyone forced to manufacture down to the standard. He also asserted there could be no such thing as a British Standard for safe making until all burglars agreed to a British Standard for safe cracking. But Josh’s main concern was that it would immediately open the doors to foreign competition. Before foreign safe makers could peddle their wares in the UK, they had to gain the approval of our demanding British insurers. There was little point in selling a safe to a customer if the contents could not be insured. Foreign manufacturers had to persuade Chief Surveyors that their products were comparable with British made equivalents. They had to be flown to factories in France, Sweden or Germany so they could inspect barrier materials, boltwork and locking systems. They demanded to view production lines and witness tests. Perhaps two dozen senior insurance personnel had to be accommodated in good hotels; wined, dined and entertained. This came at a price and there was no guarantee that at the end of it all their safes would receive parity with their British rivals. Some tried and failed. Others further away in Israel and Australia, thought it simply wasn’t worth the effort. In addition, British safe makers had other problems to contend with. Nationalised industries such as The Coal Board and British Steel had always paid their workers weekly, in cash, but agreement had been reached with trades unions to allow their members to receive wages paid directly into personal bank accounts. The growth in the use of credit cards led pundits to predict the coming of a ‘cashless society’. In 1973 Britain joined the Economic Union. Soon EN standards were popping up all over the place. It was rumoured there would one day be a European standard for testing and rating cash safes and in spite of the best efforts Levy and other enlightened sceptics, EN1143-1 was finally published in 1997. The basic concept was to ensure there would be comparability of quality and design throughout Europe. In theory, a safe tested in the UK in accordance with EN 1143-1, with a certified resistance level of Grade II, would be the same strength and

quality as a safe tested and certified to this standard anywhere else in the EU. Major British safe makers having had it their own way for so long, had an in-built distrust of Johnny Foreigner and almost from the moment it was ratified, there were shouts of “Foul!” UK safe makers protested that some foreign test houses were not applying the standard as robustly as they should and there seemed to be some justification in this assertion. After a few years confidence in EN11431-1 was being undermined and the European Fire and Security Group (EFSG) was launched in an attempt to restore faith in standards. Subsequently the European Certification Board/Security (ECB.S) was founded with pretty much the same purpose. Today, many British insurers will not accept safes tested in laboratories that remain outside the EFSG or are not certified by ECB.S. Sadly, this all came too late. As predicted, once EN1143-1 was ratified the market was flooded with safes of all shapes and sizes, all claiming to have been tested and certified in compliance with EN1143-1. The prices of Eastern European safes in particular were ridiculously low. We had also seen the growth of on-line trading and cheap imported safes were being sold by scores of Internet companies. They had few overheads and many had previous knowledge or experience. The effect was to force down margins and savagely reduce profits. Research and development budgets were scrapped and sales teams made redundant=. Chubb Safes is now owned by Gunnebo, a Swedish conglomerate. The once mighty Wolverhampton safe works is closed with much of their production taking place in Indonesia.

John Tann’s famous factory in Billericay has become a business park. Stephen Cox, Guardian, Ratner, Stratford are all gone. Chubb, Rosengrens and Churchill are just brand names. John Tann, the world’s first safe maker, has vanished entirely. What can be done? Shouting “Told you so!” is satisfying but not particularly useful. There is no way we will ever see the return of the heady days of the 1960’s but if we act now, we may just be able to preserve the few remaining British safe makers. Someone has to take up the banner on behalf of our home based safe industry. The British Security Industry Association doesn’t seem remotely interested. In spite of the fact that it was the insurance industry that called for standards, the British Insurance Association feels that it is none of their concern and the Association of Insurance Surveyors, whilst sympathetic, is rightly concerned with its member’s interests, not propping up the failing British safe industry. There’s a tiny glimmer of hope. Two years ago a group of interested parties met at the Security Institute to launch a new association, Eurosafe UK, dedicated to improving the quality of safes and security containers in the UK and setting a benchmark for a professional standard of service, installation and maintenance. Now with 32 member companies and 4 associate organisations, Eurosafe UK has recently held its second AGM. At the end of May this year, the parent body, Eurosafe in mainland Europe, will hold its annual General Assembly in the UK for the very first time with senior representatives of all major European safe makers in attendance. There’s still a great deal to do, but at last we are fighting back.

ALPRO SCORES FOR THE EXETER CHIEFS Exeter Chiefs, one of the UK’s leading rugby clubs, is using transom door closers from Poole-based Alpro Architectural Hardware at its new 10,000-capacity Sandy Park stadium in Devon. The rugby club is using the devices at main entrance points to the ground and for corporate boxes in its west stand, with facility managers benefitting from the ability to adjust the latching and closing force created by the hydraulic valve activity according to the weight and height of individual doors. Keith Parry, Divisional Sales Manager at Alpro,
said: “Transom overhead door closers are designed to be contained within the transom header bar of the door. The concealed operation lends itself to sports venues and particularly sponsored
areas since the aesthetic appearance of doors is left uncompromised. Once fitted, even the heaviest single or double-action aluminium doors will function continuously with minimal maintenance.” The Alpro units were installed by Exmouth-based MPS Architectural Aluminium, a commercial fabricator and supplier with a 20-year track record and prestigious portfolio. MPS use these closers extensively and its clients benefit from durability which has been tested independently at 250,000 double-action cycles to EN 1154.

Sterling Locks suggest stocking its Door Closers, Heavy Duty Door Chains and multi-purpose door locks alongside the new H 6 pin Euro Cylinders. This Sterling Door range can lead to related sales and each product tells its own security story. Sterling Door Closers are surface mounted which have a ½ hour fire rating. This product scores on several fronts – automatically closing doors for energy saving purposes, helping protect homeowners in the event of a fire and providing the simple service of stopping doors being left open. Multi-purpose door bolts give a secondary level of security for all types of doors timber to uPVC, and will help prevent doors simply being pushed in by offering more points of reinforcement. Sterling recommends one to be fitted at the top and bottom of each door and are available keyed individually or in alike pairs.
For the front or main entrance door, a proper heavy duty door chain provides that extra level of real security that is easy to fix and provides reassurance to the homeowner. Finally the Sterling Locks’ new range of 6 Pin Euro Profile Cylinders combines practical features with excellent value and is Sold Secure approved. The new “H series” range of 6 pin cylinders have all the attributes of Sterling’s popular 5 pin range, but provide a step up for customers looking for no-nonsense security without a hike up in price. The H series features include anti-drill hardened pins in the cylinder body and cylinder plug. The anti-bump design and mushroom pins also provide increased protection against picking. BRAGGART THIEF BOMBARDED WITH ABUSIVE CALLS A thief who boasted online about stealing £40,000 worth of tools lived to regret it - after he was bombarded by hundreds of abusive phone calls. Jason Griffiths, 25, received the unwanted calls after angry internet users tracked down his details following his arrogant post. Griffiths, from Bristol, was jailed for two months for his part in the theft which saw the side of a van ripped open and dozens of tools stolen from the back. Griffiths posted a response to a thread started by the victim of the crime in October who revealed pictures of the side of the van, which looked as if it had been cut with a tin opener.
But instead of apologising, Griffiths boasted in an illiterate post about how he had committed the crime and how easy his prison sentence had been. The post prompted an angry response from readers who traced Griffiths and published his full name, address, mobile phone number, email address, Facebook profile and pictures of his family. Griffiths said he had been trying to offer van owners security advice to prevent them from becoming victims of crime.

Motorcycle industry pulls together to fight theft Recognising the serious impact that motorcycle crime is having on the motorcycle community, the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI), has launched an official security marking scheme called The MASTER* Security Scheme to be utilised by its motorcycle members. Figures from the MCI show an estimated 43% of all insurance total loss payouts are owing to theft and added to this the figures from the Motorcycle Crime Reduction Group suggest that 40% of victims of motorcycle theft leave the motorcycle community. The MASTER Security Scheme, a motorcycle and scooter security marking and secure registration programme, has been developed in conjunction with Secured by Design member company Datatag, who will supply their component marking elements of the scheme and the registration infrastructure and call centre operation. Steve Kenward, CEO of the MCI said: “‘Theft is and has been a great concern for the industry and we need to do all we can to help combat it. Lockdecoders achieves record sales Continually increasing sales volume for the company’s main and exclusive products is paying off with impressive results for the adventurous team at Lockdecoders Ltd. January was the company’s largest ever monthly turnover, beating any previous month by over 35%. February was forecast to be low on the basis of historical trends, yet it too, proved to be a surprisingly buoyant month. Vic Southern, who ‘moonlights’ with the company in between his civic duties as Mayor of Swanley and Chairman of the Council’s commercial catering business, says that the sky seems to be the limit for the future. The firm is in a class of its own in the speciality field of auto locksmith supply as it does not sell keys or fobs retail (although it does have some wholesale clients). Apart from that, the entire business volume is in major equipment sales and follow-up ancillaries – transponder chips, eeprom modules, cutters and decoders. GROWING EXPORT SUCCESS The hectic travel programme of managing director Peter Southern which last year took him to no less than 14 countries and to several new ones in the first couple of months of 2013 - has resulted in the firm exporting to 35 countries so far, and the business receives applications from new potential distributors every few days.
Peter has several new products on the back burner but wisely is choosing not to launch them until everything is properly in place with manuals, spares and training. He feels that a couple of products were put onto the market perhaps a trifle prematurely under pressure from customers - resulting in a lot of catching up to do afterwards. NEAL ADDS TECHNICAL EXPERTISE Peter’s youngest brother Neal has now joined the team, virtually taking over all the technical support on Miracle keycutting machines and Magic engravers - as well as being a key figure at the UK trade shows at which Lockdecoders has such a prominent presence. Neal reports that the large sales volume achieved already by the firm’s latest automatic key cutting machine, the Miracle A9, has not affected the quantity of sales of the Miracle A5. The latter is still the ‘weapon of choice’ for mobile auto locksmiths while the bigger new machine is undeniably the world’ s most versatile key cutting machines handling all car keys, including Tibbe and FO19, as well as domestic cylinder keys and dimple keys.
That is a lot from one remarkable machine with a price tag still under £5000. Meanwhile the MiraClone, exclusive throughout the world, is throwing up more and more cloning, chip generating and eeprom capabilities as each month goes by, thanks to a non-stop research programme. The company is also doing its bit by supporting young apprentices in their efforts to become great auto locksmiths and last year awarded lavish prizes to the salesmen from its distributors who sold the most Lockdecoders products. Those well-deserved prizes went to John at SKS and Scott Sieper in Australia in recognition of their tremendous efforts. Peter’s great ambition for this year, apart from more and more sales, is to bring the company’s website up to the mark, to match the many other things this successful business does so well. Looking at what the team is achieving this early in the year, there seems no doubt that we will soon see an improved website that will help boost sales even more – and that Peter’s passport gets even more stamps!

KeyDiy Arrives in the UK! It’s what you have been waiting for…. The much anticipated KeyDiy system is now officially for sale in the UK & Ireland. This impressive system consists of a range of four styles of remotes and a range of blades to suit.
The magic of the system lies in the fact that you can select the style of remote you prefer and create it into the remote you require. Its clever design allows you to create 315mhz & 433mhz in one remote; in fact its frequency range is 300 to 900mhz, allowing unhindered future development. Using the KeyDiy system means that you can reduce your stock holding but increase your coverage. Currently, you would need to stock a wide variety of remotes to cover even just the popular vehicles. With the KeyDiy system there is no need to stock so many remotes.
You create the remote you require when the demand exists. No more ‘out of stock’ or ‘forgot to reorder’ scenarios. No more stock gathering dust. No more keeping an unpopular remote ‘just in case’. No more ‘Stock dried up’ - and Backorders become a thing of the past. The KeyDiy remote is a high quality remote key with the convenience of a folding blade. In many cases the remote is better than the original remote. There is also an option to ‘Self brand’ the remotes. A remote can be produced within seconds. You then simply fit and cut a blade, and insert the correct transponder
applicable for the vehicle. The KeyDiy system creates the ‘Part’ as per original. Programming to the vehicle would still be required in the normal manner as if you had a dealer or copy remote. A Laptop or PC Currently running Windows XP (service pack3), Windows Vista and Windows 7 is all that’s required to run the software. Check out the special introductory offer running through April. When you are ready to learn more, find information, videos, current application list and the online shop at www.KeyDiyUK.com

Single lifter four track lishi 2in1 pick /decoder At first these tools can look complicated to read, but they are actually not. There are two main types of this tool design: I have tried to show you both in this guide. Picking and decoding the Volvo NE66 lock
Picking and decoding the NE66 lock First we centre the lifter to avoid snagging on insertion; we then insert the tool fully into the lock. Once fully inserted, we tickle each wafer position feeling for binding solid wafers; each time we find a binding wafer we pick it .
Position 4B is next to pick
You will see from the tools design that the B axis relates to the numbered positions on the top grid; the A axis relates to the numbered positions on the bottom grid of the tool , signified by the A and the B printed on the grid . So we have positions 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A and 1B, 2B, 3B and 4B The lock picks and decodes in the same direction. The lock has four wafer positions on each axis so eight wafer positions in all: two wafers in top axis a and two in bottom axis A and two in top axis B and two wafers in bottom axis B; so when picking and decoding each axis , two positions on each axis will pick and decode towards the numbers and two positions on each axis will pick and decode away from the numbers. The lock has four key heights. All wafer positions can be found in the door lock. It all sounds complicated, but in fact it isn’t, and the picture guide will greatly simplify this for you. The NE66 lock shows no proven sequence preference, so it is a matter of going through all positions to find the binding wafer; each time we find a binding wafer we pick it, if it moves we leave it well alone .
Position 1a is first to pick As position 4B picks the lock opens
We hold the lock open via the tension arm, and run the decode process one axis at a time, starting with the A axis .
Position 3A is next to pick Position 1A reads as a No 2 cut
Position 3B is next to pick
Position 2A reads as a No 4 cut Article continues on page 64 >>

UsingThe Lishi 2 in 1 Pick / decoder to pick and decode the Peugeot 406, NE78 Lock The new range of Lishi 2 in 1 picks and decoders in one unit I really do like. They are neater than the old range, far easier to use and come with superb feedback; in fact the superior feedback has made picking a whole lot easier. Below is one of the tools from the range, The NE78, 2 in 1 pick/decoder. Position 3A reads as a No 2 cut
Position 3B reads as a No 1 cut
New Lishi 2 in 1 pick/decoder NE78 common on Peugeot 406.
Position 4A reads as a No 4 cut
So this gives us the A axis cuts from 1 to 4 bow to tip of: 2424 We now read axis B.
Position 4B reads as a No 2 cut
B axis reads as 1 to 4 bow to tip: 4412 So the full decode is:A axis = 2424 B axis = 4412 We can enter these cuts into our cut to code machine and cut the key. We can also enter these cuts into instacode to find the manufacturers key code for the lock. We do this by selecting NE66 lock, then find the bitting and we then enter our cuts above as diagram below:
1B reads as a No 4 cut
We then click next to find the manufacturers key code as below diagram
The gauge with the wafer positions running right to left and the height lines to the right make reading and positioning spot on every time.
PICKING THE LOCK Insert the pick tool into the lock, once inserted, apply very, very light tension, as in picture: Line up the pointer to the 0 position on the grid, as in the picture 1 below, then gently push the wafer manipulator up or down, on the unmarked line above the 0 position, as in picture 2 below.
Picture 1 2B reads as a No 4 cut

Picking all 10 wafers, do not get tempted to apply more tension at this point, as if not fully picked the clutch will engage rather than the lock open, as in picture 1, picture 2 shows the lock open.
Once the lock has been picked to the open position, hold the pick with your tension in the open position, then position the pointer on the gauge in the 0 position as in picture below.
Picture 2
If wafer resistance is felt, the pick is correctly inserted, if no wafer resistance is felt at all then the pick is upside down, turn pick over and repeat above test. Once wafer resistance is felt, you need to reapply your light tension, position the picks pointer on position 0 and gently push the wafer manipulator up or down slowly on the unmarked line opposite the 0, until you feel a little light jump, verify wafer is picked by gently depressing the manipulator down and you will feel it move and spring back, much like a picked lever in a mortice lock, it will feel springy to the touch.
Keep your very light tension on and slide the pointer to position 9 on the gauge as in picture above.
‘Get into the habit of checking each position to ensure each position is springy and once this is confirmed, apply more tension to the tensioner’ When you believe that you have set each wafer, prior to applying opening tension, get into the habit of checking each position to ensure each position is springy and once this is confirmed, apply more tension to the tensioner and open the door lock as in the pictures below.
Gently depress the plunger down until it stops without force applied, on the side the number is on, in this case the 0, and read the line it stops on as line/height 1, 2, 3 or 4, and you have the cut for this position. We start by decoding all of the even numbers first, so we start at tip 0 and work to bow 2, 0, 8, 6, 4 and 2 as in pictures below:
0 position stops line/cut No 2
8 position stops on line/cut No 1
Push the wafer up or down gently on the unmarked line opposite the 9 until springy as with 0 position, pictured above
Repeat the process for each position from 0 down to position 1
With a little practise in the increased feel and simplicity of use of these new tools, the picking process takes around one minute to complete tops. In fact, I had my 15 year old son and seven year old daughter – neither having never picked a car lock before - opening these in one to 2 minutes, such is the ease of use compared to the old tool range. DECODING THE LOCK Decoding the lock is now far easier than before, same tool, no need to spike the plug to hold it whilst you remove the pick and insert the decoder, and no need to remove the decoder to turn it over to decode side 2.

So this reads the key from positions 9, 7, 5, 3 and 1 tip to bow as, 1, 3, 4, 3 and 3, this gives us the cut of side B of the key pictured as top row below: 9 position stops on line/cut No 1 2 position stops on line/cut No 2
‘One and a half to two and a half minutes throughout’ Top row, reads from bow to tip as cuts, 3, 3, 4, 3 and 1 so again decoded spot on.
7 position stops on line/cut No 3
So side of the key A is cuts from tip to bow, 2, 1, 1, 3 and 2, checked against the bottom row of the key above.
This bottom row bow to tip, left to right, 2, 3, 1, 1 and 2 at tip, decoded spot on! Now we decode the odd positions 9, 7, 5, 3 and 1 for side B of the key, from tip to bow (right).
‘The decode gauge is extremely accurate and very quick and easy to use’
5 position stops on line/cut No 4
3 position stops on line/cut No 3
1 position stops on line/cut No 3
So as you now have the cuts for both sides/axis of key. You can now cut the key and begin programming. The decode gauge is extremely accurate and very quick and easy to use, with a little practise I have sampled 12 different Peugeot 406 locks, with average times for picking and decoding the lock accurately between one and a half to two and a half minutes throughout.
Twin lifter 4 track lishi 2in1 pick decoders HON66 picking and decoding using the Lishi 2in1 pick
The best picking sequence for this lock , Mr Li says is: Right upper row axis A Left upper row Axis B Right bottom row Axis B Left bottom row Axis A
You now need to pick the binding wafers on axis B upper and lower rows;
Position 2 lower
As a four track key you have four rows of wafer to deal with: you have a left upper row, a right upper row and a left bottom row and a right bottom row. The key will be cut with the left upper and right bottom side being identical and the right upper side and the left lower side being cut identical, so that the key can be entered any way up.
We must first pick all binding wafers on the A axis upper and lower
In this case the three position on the upper row, a slight movement was felt and nothing else was binding, you would pick all binding wafers on the upper and lower row of the A axis.

Once the position five on the B axis row was picked the lock rotated 45 degrees, the lock is still not open - many confuse this as open when picking this lock, but it is not - there will still be binding wafers on the A axis row. You now need to pick the binding wafers on the A axis row
The Lock must be in the fully open position and held there in order to decode. Remember you only decode the first four positions on each axis within this lock, as the end two positions will always be the same: if this changes use instacode to confirm. In normal circumstances, the end two positions are generic on each axis as below. Axis A = the last two cuts at the tip end will be cut five and cut one or cut two and cut one, dependent on series
Position 2 on the bottom row
Position two reads as a No 5 cut.
Decode each position you had a binding wafer in and in the same direction as picked and enter into instacode to confirm the missing end cuts. Plenty of locksmiths have come unstuck or confused when trying to lock this lock, as the lock will not fully reset to the locked position and instead only part sets to the 45 degree position. Locksmiths in the past have resorted to removing and stripping the lock to reset it which is very timeconsuming. The lishi 2in1 has simplified this, saving time and energy on relocking: all that is needed is to tension in the locking direction and pick the binding wafers on the A axis, normally the last ones picked and the lock will fully reset and lock.
Position 3 on the upper row and lock opens fully
The lock is now open and can be decoded; in order to decode the lock we must hold the lock in this fully open position via the tension handle and decode in the same direction as we picked the lock.

Position 2 on the lower row
‘The end two positions are generic on each axis’ Axis B = The last two cuts at the tip end will be cut three and cut one or cut five and cut one, dependent on series Some may differ per series, which is why you always check last two cuts on instacode. Axis A is the cuts on the “left upper side” and “right bottom side” of the key if looking at tip of key or “right upper” and “left bottom if looking from the bow end. Axis B is the cuts on the “right upper side” and “left bottom side” of the key if looking at the tip of the key, or “left upper side” and “ right bottom side” of the key if looking from bow end .
