Chapter I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study As we know attraction to the opposite sex usually starts during adolescence. Many teenagers usually become interested and involved with the opposite sex because of the desire to belong with others. As a result, it is clear that over time, romantic relationship gain importance. Adolescent crave to have an intimate romantic relationship to which love is given and received without restriction. According to Baumeister and Leary’s (1995) belongingness theory, individuals have an evolved and robust need of closeness and social belonging. Furthermore, their theory states that human beings have an almost universal need to form and maintain at least some degree of interpersonal relationships with other humans. Because of these need to belong, we can see nowadays that most high school students enter such relationship in order for them to feel that someone cares for them, loves them and give and receive affection for others1. Knowing that teenage relationship plays a huge impact to a teenager, some high school students that are involved in a romantic relationship struggles in keeping their grades up while trying to maintain their relationship. According to a research conducted by Campbell and Oliver (1994) found benefits in having a romantic relationship such as “companionship, feeling of happiness, feeling of being loved or loving another, intimacy, self-growth and selfunderstanding, and more positive-esteem. These Benefits found in a romantic relationship were said to be the cause of motivation in pursuing their studies. However, Campbell and Oliver (1994) also pointed out some negative cost of having a romantic relationship, namely stress, and worry about the relationship, social and nonsocial sacrifices, increased dependence on the partner, fights time and effort investment, and feeling worse about the self which were said to be

the cause of anxiety of the students. Desiring a romantic partner is a natural, expected part of adolescence. However, involvement in a serious or exclusive romantic relationship in the preteen/early teen years can create problems. Youth spend much of their time thinking, talking, and engaging in romantic relationships. Strong positive or negative emotions in youth are more commonly caused by romantic relationships as opposed to other kinds of relationships (such as with friends, parents, or school staff) (Furman & Shaffer, 2003). It is often believed that romantic relationships may negatively affect youth’s academic outcomes because the time spent with a romantic partner might distract one from schoolwork. Regarding such behavior of students on focusing more on their love life they inclined on failing examinations, being late in class and losing comprehension and retention on their studies2. Learning all these aforementioned concepts, the researchers was motivated to conduct a study to be able to determine the effects of teenage relationship on academic performance of fourth high school students. It explores the degree of importance on how to handle such behavior and to establish proper connection between students and stakeholders perceived to be, thus this study3.
Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the effects of teenage relationship on academic performance of fourth year high school students of La Consolacion College – Iriga City S/Y 2014-2015. Specifically this study aims to answer the following questions: 1. What are the profiles of respondents in terms of the following? a. Age b. Gender

2. What are the effects of teenage relationship on academic performance of fourth year high school students of La Consolacion College- Iriga City? 3. What are the recommendations to attain a good academic performance of students who are involved in a relationship? Scope and Delimitation The study covered an attempt to determine the effects of teenage relationship on academic performance of fourth year high school student of La Consolacion College – Iriga City school year 2014-2015. Thirty one (31) students of the fourth year level of La Consolacion College – Iriga City, San Roque, Iriga City enrolled during the school year 2014-2015. These 31 respondents of the study selected were the known students having a relationship. The study commenced during the month of March.
Significance of the Study The researchers believes that this study will be beneficial to those who are concerned to the development of the students It is hoped that the result will be of great value to all stakeholders of education and guidance counseling especially the following4: Administrators. The implication drawn from these studies would help them in formulating policies, programs and activities that would help the students in coping of with their studies. Teachers. The study will be a great help for them to assess the learning capabilities of the students regardless of their relationship, and also as loco parentis, this will help them in guiding their students in balancing their academics and their love life.

Students. Through this study, the students will necessarily employ deep understanding to align their priorities both in their academics and relationship. Parents. The study would serve as an eye-opener for them to become more concerned about enhancing their children’s academic performance. Further, this study would help them to understand their children’s side and feeling. Guidance Counselors. The findings of this research may provide the think tank for them to formulate programs, activities and symposium that would help the students in their academic and relationship problems. Future Researchers. From the results of this study, future researchers may be encouraged to conduct similar studies in their respective school/colleges in relation to the professionals produced. This study will be a source of additional inputs.
Definition of Terms The following terms are defined either operationally or conceptually for better understanding and analysis of study: Belongingness - the state of being accepted and comfortable in a place or group Relationship - the connection between two or more people or groups and their involvement with one another, especially as regards the way they behave toward and feel about one another Teenage Relationship - relationship between teens. Teens are between the age of approximately 13~18.
