Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Senior High School (SHS) covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and includes Grade 11 and 12. In SHS, students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of their choices. This program has been implementing by the Department of Education since 2012.
One of the subjects offers in Senior High School curriculum is the Physical Education and Health which exercise the student's wellness and health condition. This is also the subject that refers as a prerogative subject that students of Senior High School have. However, this is said to be a conclusion because of the rising strategy of some teachers by liking, sharing and reacting the student's works in social media particularly Facebook as a referral to their academic performance.
According to Bong Santisteban; post in Facebook; basing their grades on social media engagement will only prompt them to roam around in Facebook and asking everyone, even total strangers for likes and shares. Santisteban also called the current generation as a millennial beggars.
This issue has been the topic of the researchers, journalists and students on today's generation because of its basis strategy performance.
One of the important cause and outcome for this phenomenon is the effects of social media on the academic performance of the students especially in Senior High School level.
The effects of social media on the academic performance of students are important matter in assessing the student's reaction in dealing with the problem.
Statement of the problem
This investigation will aim to find out the effects of social media as the teacher's strategy by using the Facebook as referral to the academic performance of the students. In particular, this will explicitly answer the following questions:
1. What are the possible effects of Facebook in the academic performance of students?
2. What do you feel about gaining likes, comments and shares?
3. Do you think this could help you in academic performance? Why or why not?
Significance of the study
This study may contribute meaningfully in understanding, analyzing and coping up with the said problem to the following: Teachers, Students of Grade 11 HUMSS – C, for upcoming students and teachers and ultimately the researchers:
The teachers will understand the feelings of the students and they will also realize the student's thought about the said problem and another reason is the over lapping strategy of some teachers. Lastly, teachers may know the ideas of the students through this study.
For the students of Grade 11 HUMSS – C, they will gain benefits in this study by understanding its significant methods in dealing with the problem; the teacher's strategy using the Facebook as referral to the academic performance of the students.
Hence, this study could help the upcoming students and teachers. Where it awakens them for a fact that social media especially Facebook gaining likes is not the best and suitable strategy in referring to the academic performance of the students.
The researchers as well, we may come up into a realization in doing the study and it also gives lessons or the knowledge that we can acquire.
Scope and delimitation of the study
With thousands of students enrolled in CCNHS – Main Campus the Grade 11 HUMSS – C section is the chosen respondents with sixty seven (67) students. This study only covers the effects of social media particularly in Facebook it may be positive or negative regards by using it as the teacher's basis in academic purposes. This study is not reliable to discuss many things that may not relate to the study and in other context. The study's limitation is based on the study's coverage and scope.
Definition of terms
The following terms are defined operationally for the benefits of the readers:
Academic Performance – refers to the related written and oral task, project and their academic process of grades.
Comment – hence the name button is used for users to express their opinions on a published status or picture.
Facebook – is a social networking site which were designed to promote convenient interaction of people around the world.
Grade 11 HUMSS – C – refers to the respondents.
HUMSS – stands for Humanities and Social Sciences, a strand where the target respondents chose. This is designed for those who wonder that is on the other side of the wall. This is for those who are considering taking up journalism, communication arts, liberal arts, education, and other social science-related courses in college.
Likes – is one of the button used in Facebook posts. Recently upgraded, not it also allow different reactions like Haha, Wow, Sad and Angry button.
Millennial Beggars – refers to the students who get the large amount of audience in reacting to their projects, tasks, works in social media.
Physical Education and Health – refers to the subject curriculum which provides the strategy in
Social Media.
Share – refers to a button is an option for Facebook users to share someone's post on their personal timeline.
Social Media engagement – a kind of communication that base on the scientific tools or in an internet.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This research effort aims in finding the effects of social media on the students' academic performance. Therefore, the literature review discusses the relevant study that is useful to the objectives of this research project. Several research studies investigating the topic under review are found recently. Since most of the innovative features offered by social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and many others are not that old and the phenomenon of the use of these media has been dominated and evolved recently with the introduction of revolutionary features and platforms. A volume of recent research studies on the effects of social media on the students' academic performance is available.
Tess (2013) presents a very comprehensive literature review paper regarding the role of social media in higher education virtual and real classes. According to this research, Facebook is said to be the most popular social networking site among students as reported by some researchers and it has reached a one billion user base in October 2012. Which is Facebook is the main target of our research and will provide explanations on its effects to the performances of the students in academic matters. MySpace is another SNS which started in 2003 and become popular around 2009. And later become antiquated, another is LinkedIn with more than 35,000,000 users has been reported as the third most popular SNS but said to be mostly used by professional networking.
Lastly, this research study finds many reasons for this mix of opinion. Although most of the educational institutions have established infrastructure for the support of social media integration into class room learning, however, the effective integration methodology is still a question mark for the researchers to answer. Some practitioners are not willing to adopt this technology due to lack of proper training in this area.
On the other hand, Ruis, Limayen & Salehi-Sangari (2011) investigates the effects of using Facebook on academic performance of undergraduate students of Lulea University of Technology Sweden in relation to their personality traits. It will test how Facebook usage affects performance of students with different personality traits.
The analysis of 239 students' data reveals a very significant results. The research establishes that using Facebook has strong negative impact on academic performance of students with extrovert personalities. However, factor of self-regulation among students greatly reduces this negative impact as they have high level of effective self-control in using social media engagements.
Also according to Junco, R. (2012) expound on his research the impact of Facebook being a social medium on students' performance on academic courses. The analysis of the collected data reveals that time spent on Facebook and frequency of visiting Facebook are negatively related to students' performance in terms of their GPA. However, there is slightly negative correlation between time spent on this widely used social medium and the time spend in studying for class. He further adds that although time spent in social media and academic performance are negatively correlated but, this relationship in real world scenarios does not seem to be a major hurdle in academic success. Lastly, he observes that the specific uses of this social media are related to improved academic performance while others contribute to lower academic results.
Hamat, Embi & Hassan (2012) studied the use of social networking platforms among students of Malaysian Institutes of higher education. This qualitative research collected data to the respondents through a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed data to make observations on the use of social media networking sites among them. The study also collects opinions of students about the impacts of social medium on their academic performance.
One of the very significant findings of the study is about the use of social networking sites for the purpose of learning. Majority of the respondents use SNSs as informal learning tool that helps them to connect to their studies. However, this study also supports that the use of social networking sites has no significantly negative impact on the students' academic performance. They further state that the possibility of some other factors like social media addiction, more time on internet, chatting, cognitive absorption, etc. Linked with the use of internet or specifically social networking sites may cause poor academic performance.
Negussie & Ketema (2014) also conducted a cross-sectional survey to Jimma University Ethiopia between March 2012 and March 2013. Like many other studies, this research effort also took Facebook into consideration to establish its findings. In a cross-sectional study of 490 respondents, the research did not find any significant relationship between students' duration and frequency of use of Facebook and their academic performance.
Further investigations among a variety of devices, it was found that the correlation between Facebook on mobile devices and students' grade is highly negative as compared to using Facebook on other devices. This adverse effect is explained by the fact that using cellphones for social networking activities may involve multitasking and all students are not equally efficient in multitasking skills.
