ENGLISH FEVER
Can you believe that the number of people who speak English as a second language is higher than the number of those who speak it as a first language? In fact, non-native speakers of English outnumber native speakers 3 to 1. In Asia alone, the number of English speakers is over 600 million – almost double the combined populations of the United States, Britain and Canada. This is the first time that a language has been so widely spoken. The “English fever” spreading across the globe has led to some unique ways of learning English.

In China, users of Skype, software that enables free calls over the Internet, have started calling fellow Skype users in the United States at random in order to practise their English. By calling total strangers, people become “voice pals” rather than pen pals.

In Korea, the government has set up six English villages across the country where students can have an intensive week of total English immersion, taught by native English speakers. The most elaborate village, in a Seoul neighbourhood, has got Western architecture, signs in English and some English-speaking foreigners who live there full-time. Students have mock passports stamped as they enter the village, and from that point, every interaction is in English. Teachers pose as policemen, bankers and waitresses to give students the experience of being in a foreign country.

Perhaps the prize for originality in teaching English goes to Taiwan. In Taiwan, the government decided that rubbish collectors would announce their arrival by pl aying phrases in conversational English, such as “How much does a pound of cabbage cost?” People bring their rubbish out to the lorries when they hear these phrases. The government’s intention was to create an English environment. Whatever the favoured method of learning English, one thing is clear. English is needed in order to participate in international commerce, science and technology. As more nations are moving towards making English one of their official languages, it’s no surprise that “English fever” is on the rise.
