FULL-BUILD: MODEL MOTORSPORT REVELL 1:24 RED BULL RB8 KIT NO.07075

S

ebastian Vettel dominated the Formula One World Championship from 2010 until 2013 while driving for the Red Bull Racing Team. His team-mate during these seasons was Australian F1 veteran Mark Webber, who competed in the series driving for various teams since 2002 until his switch to the World Endurance Championship for 2014. As a fan of Webber’s, I wanted to build a model to celebrate his career in Formula One. A couple of years ago, Revell Germany took on a challenge which no other model manufacturers had for a long time - they released affordable kits of modern Formula One cars. The first three released were the Ferrari F10, Mercedes W01 and McLaren MP4-25, all from the 2010 season. Despite their success, Revell waited a long time before releasing any more, however the end of 2013 saw a new release from the company; the Red Bull RB8. At a fraction of the price of the current Tamiya releases, one might expect Revell’s offering to be lacking in quality, however this is not the case. Yes, it does have its downfalls, but overall, and with a bit of work, it can build into a good-looking model. I had two kits for this build, and I used one of them as a ‘trial’ for many parts, in order to find the best way of building/painting certain assemblies such as the front and rear wings which proved difficult. V FRONT WING To start the build, I searched through the sprues, which were all moulded in blue plastic, for all of the body parts which would need painting in the Red Bull blue. In total, I counted twenty-eight parts, plus an extra two for the halves of the air intake, which

would be painted yellow. The instruction manual suggests that each of the front wing pieces should be painted and decalled separately, however after a failed attempt doing this, I started again by gluing four parts (the end-plates and top parts) to the main wing. This made painting easier and minimised the risk of glue destroying the paint and decals. However, this created an issue in that the ‘Red Bull’ decals would need modifying to fit under the part where it attaches. To do this, I cut the decal and when I applied it, I slid it around the part in question.

There is a grand total of twenty-eight body parts, however the rear wing and part of the front wing was assembled.

REAR WING

A similar method was employed for the rear wing assembly. The inside faces of the endplates are entirely covered by a carbon fibre decal, however my first attempt of following the instructions and assembling the parts after painting/ decalling once again proved unsuccessful and so I cut the decal into three parts so that it fit around the wing elements. The rest of the bodywork assembly was fairly straightforward.

The carbon fibre decals are a fantastic addition to the kit, and completely transform the chassis.

PAINT

To paint the blue parts, I used Tamiya TS-89 Pearl Blue, a colour which was released for Tamiya’s own Red Bull kit, the RB6. As with any other TS paint, I decanted it and sprayed the first coats through the airbrush, as not to waste paint and to ensure an even

colour. In order to improve the sheen and to bring out the pearl effect, I applied the final coat directly from the can. The only masking required on the bodywork was the yellow around the headrest. The air-intake parts were separate from the body, but the headrest is attached. To paint this, I

sprayed it and the air-intake with Revell Aqua Colour, not a paint I would usually use, but I needed a yellow which would perfectly match the nose decal, and a 9:1 mix of yellow:orange was suggested in the instructions. After this had dried for forty-eight hours, I masked it and painted the blue.

DECALS

The yellow was painted with Revell Aqua Color, and was masked before spraying the bodywork in TS-89 Pearl Blue.

As the rear wing was assembled The two smaller segments were applied before painting, the inside next, ensuring there were no gaps. endplate decals need cutting into three pieces to fit.

The decals came on a very large sheet, and with different options, for different races and also to allow the builder to decide how to tackle the yellow area on the nose. It would be possible to

challenging, due to the complex shape of the air intakes. At first, I found it impossible to apply these decals, however I tried again with a different set, and cut them in order to ease application. On both decals, I cut the two words away

I chose the second option, and although it required a lot of Micro Sol to conform around the part, I found it easier than painting and masking the yellow. The majority of the decals are of a high quality, however the ‘Red Bull’ logos on the side-pods (it is worth noting at this point that I glued the side-pods to the cowling before painting for a similar reason as I mentioned regarding the front wing assembly) proved

This worked much better, and once I had made sure they all matched up, leaving no blue gaps, they look like a single decal. I used a similar method on the black decals which cover the areas around the exhaust exits. These come as a single black decal, which is very difficult to apply around the complex shapes. For these, I cut each decal into five parts, which meant there were simpler U

V curves for the individual pieces to conform around. Another pair of decals which caused issue were the main 'bull' decals on the top of the engine cover. At first, I thought that the best way of handling these would be to cut each decal into three pieces, one for each part (air intake, main engine cover, rear engine cover), however I soon discovered that this was not the best method, and instead it was easier to apply the decals as a whole. I did this, and allowed them to dry for a few hours. After this, I carefully brushed some Micro Sol in order to push them into conforming to the part. I have found that with the decals Revell use, it is best to be careful

when applying decal softener because using too much can melt and stretch them. Most of the time, I applied the Micro Sol over two or three sessions, a little at a time.

It would be better if the ‘Pirelli P Zero’ decals were the same type of decal as found in Tamiya kits, as these fall off easily.

I found the rear suspension assembly to be one of the kit’s strongest features. I was surprised to find a comprehensive set of carbon fibre decals for the floor pan, gearbox and suspension arms included. This is something that is rare to find in plastic kits, especially considering the ‘budget’ price of this offering! For each of these parts, I painted them in Tamiya TS-14 (Gloss) Black, again decanted and through the airbrush. is still simple to assemble these and once again, the CF decals give a fantastic finish. INTERIOR Unfortunately, the seatbelts which are moulded onto the seat look very poor, and so I sanded these off and made

my own, using strips ofred, masking tape painted and various photo-etched buckles from both 1:20 F1 cars and 1:24 road cars. I find it interesting that Revell didn’t just include a decal for seatbelts; the instructions make no mention of them, and the finished photos from Revell show that they have just been painted black to match the seat. The steering wheel has a single decal for all of the buttons, which looks surprisingly realistic and saved me the difficulty of painting each of the individual buttons. The assembly of the parts in the interior was very simple, and built up with no problems at all. WHEELS Included are four fantastic slick tyres, with no seam line or imperfections on them. A separate sheet of decals has two sets of eight tyre decals, one white (hard) and one yellow (medium). Whilst these decals look very good, they don’t adhere well to the tyres, and it would be better for either a photo-etched stencil or transfers (such as those included in Tamiya kits) to be used. Whilst stencils are available to buy from aftermarket manufacturers, they are designed for 1:20 kits, and not 1:24. The decals eventually lifted, and so I had to replace them with a second set. CONCLUSION Overall, this is a very good kit, with some fantastic details such as carbon fibre decals. It is unfortunate that there are no seatbelts included, however with about hour's hour’s work, it is possible to make some realistic ones yourself. Some of the decals (‘Red Bull’ logos on side-pods for example) seem to have not U TMMI 232 February

The complex front wing can be appreciated in this view, as well as the front suspension elements, which are virtually in scale thickness.

evelopment of Soviet armoured fighting vehicles dates back to the mid 1920s when the first prototype of the BA-27 was created. Successive upgrades in the form of the BA-3 and BA-6 lead to the most modern version, the BA-10. The basis for all these vehicles was the three-axle chassis from the Soviet GAZ-AAA cargo truck, which was built

under license from Ford. The four-man crew was made up of a driver and machine gunner who sat in the vehicle hull, plus the loader and the commander, who was also a gunner, were sitting in the turret. The vehicle was armed with two DT 7.62mm machine guns plus a 45mm calibre '20-K' gun. So the BA-10 had pretty decent firepower, given that it was 'only' an

armoured truck. Armoured protection constituted plating of 15mm, which could only resist a light machine gun. BA-10s were deployed in the Winter War in Finland, the occupation of Poland, in the defence of Moscow and Stalingrad. I even saw a photo on the internet of a BA-10 in service of Iran. Many machines were captured by the Finnish army and even more fell into the

hands of the German army. For modellers who like 'beutepanzer', this is good subject as there are a lot of photos of the BA-10 in Wehrmacht service to be found on the internet and also in the hands of the SS. There were 3,311 units produced in three versions and the base version was upgraded with newer radio plus railroad version.

Hull and turret are made with a slide mould.

The tyres have nicely moulded logos in Cyrillic text.

The weakest points are the doors, which have fine depressions and slightly soft rivet detail.

The kit includes a nice, one piece barrel. Detail view of the photo-etched sheets.

Included with the kit is a nicely moulded engine, which just needs some wiring and extra details.

THE HOBBYBOSS KIT

The box contains nine sprues of high quality, sand-coloured plastic which does not break even when working on thin parts. One clear sprue provides light lenses. The tyres are in black vinyl and two sheets of photo-etched parts plus decals for Finland, Germany and two Soviet camouflaged machines will also be found in the box. This vehicle is as much an icon of the Soviet Army as the T-34, only on four wheels. The old kits from Eastern Express and Zvezda have long been available, but now there's a decent kit for decent money. If it did have such a complex and delicate chassis (plus some mild pitfalls in parts-fit), it could be assembled in a few hours. Thus, it takes a little longer time, but I managed to complete it in just three weeks. After a challenging model of T-34 abandoned in Afghanistan, I wanted to build something simple and quick and I was impressed by the BA-10 kit. 

The decal sheet provides four camouflage schemes.

Assembled chassis is highly detailed, but also delicate.

The tyres are quite soft and do not fit all that well to the wheels, so on the recommendation of his friend Jindřich Šteřbáček, the author filled them with Milliput putty for increased strength and while it was still soft, fitted them to the wheels.

The base mixture was lightened with XF-4 Yellow Green and some areas of the model were lightened in places. The author also painted the periscope covers and lights with different shades of green from Vallejo. In this state the contrast looks awful, but after a whitewash and weathering it will be just right.

The model was sprayed with paints mixed by eye using Tamiya XF-67, XF-5, XF-62, as the Soviets used many shades of green.

The author tried the technique of speckling on oil paints to imitate small chips, which modeller Martin Ková č uses. It also too does not matter here, if it looks exaggerated because 80% of the chips will be concealed under the whitewash and weathering.

To achieve the effect of chipping and also streaked lime whitewash camouflage, an initial layer of almost transparent white must be first sprayed. After spraying two layers of 'Worn Effect' (AK Interactive), XF-2 Flat White was sprayed, with a small drop of green added.

With a brush dipped in warm water, the white colour was loosened in patches to reveal the base green. This forms a very good base for further paint effects.

Photos of detail 'mapping'. This technique involves the layering of white paint to create different textures and appropriate scratches/streaks of lime whitewash. It is clear to see in these pictures.

For the turret numbers the author used Tamiya Masking Tape on which he drew numbers, then cut them out. Precision wasn't essential here, as the numbers would have been loosely painted hand-freehand by the crew or at the depot.

In preparation for the oil paints, the author used colour-washes in combination with Mig Productions' Neutral Wash in the shallower areas and AK's Winter Streaking Grime in the deeper shadows.

Through the mask, the author lightly sprayed the numbers almost transparently, using red from the Vallejo range.

After the colour-washes the author started work on the rendering technique, where oil paints were used to achieve the desired effects, in the exact places where he wanted them. It's not quite like fading, which is technique used on whole surfaces to form of a faded effect.

The author took pictures of this technique so it Dark rust-coloured oil paint was used here, but could be better understood. These two figures, cast in fine grey resin, are the perfect addition to an AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter. Both are sculpted in relaxed positions and wear the ‘bone dome’ crew helmet. Excellent detail and cast flawlessly.



After the oil paints, it was time for pigments. Two mixtures were used; dark and light, both mixed from Mig Productions' Russian Earth, Light Dust and Concrete pigments. These mixtures were first applied over the chassis and then pigment fixer was applied.

Since the surface was looking too ‘dry’, the author used ‘Fresh Mud’ from AK interactive, which was sprayed into corners and under fenders, thus creating a wet patches.

Using the same mixtures, the wheels were given the mud treatment too. They were fixed with Tamiya X20A thinner so that the pigment could still be wiped off some places.

or those of you who have never read 2000AD, or at least the editions featuring Rogue Trooper, here’s a quick introduction to his character. Rogue's story takes place on a planet called 'Nu Earth' which has an environment poisoned by biological and chemical weapons used

Rogue Trooper – a genetically engineered super soldier or GI (Genetic Infantrymen) was created by Gerry Finley-Day and artist Dave Gibbons for the 2000AD comic series back in 1981. Now it’s 2014 and Alex Long shows how he tackles the computer engineered 70mm scale miniature created by Dark World Creations.

during years of civil the warperpetual between the Southers and the Norts. Much of the story is inspired by WWII, the American Civil War and the Cold War and includes distinct references to these conflicts. Created by the Southers to withstand the harsh atmosphere, the virtually invulnerable 'Genetic Infantrymen' are nonetheless betrayed by the Traitor General and slaughtered at the Quartz Zone Massacre. Only Rogue survives, managing to salvage the Bio-chips – implants designed to save the personalities of dead GI’s – of three comrades; Helm, Bagman and Gunnar. He implants these Bio-chips into his helmet, backpack and rifle. With his superior strength, skill and super tough blue skin Rogue embarks on a mission to hunt down the Traitor General and the Nort commanders.

The first thing I have to say about this kit is the sculpt and casting is absolutely outstanding. This is the first time I’ve painted a digitally sculpted figure and I have to say I’m impressed. Aside from the excellent d etailing, the fit of parts is amazing. The arms clip in seamlessly and line up 100% accurately with Gunnar the rifle. Helm, Rogues helmet, actually has an audible when placed on his head,click so perfect is the fit. He’s as well engineered as a miniature as he is in the comics! Photo1 shows the kit in parts, straight from the box. As well as the resin parts, some photo etch and copper wires are included, making up the chin straps and cords attaching the pouches on each thigh. Some small pilot holes were drilled in the pouches to facilitate a deeper attachment of the wire, see photo 2 . For ease of painting and generously aided by the fact that the arms fit so well that they can easily be attached after painting, Photo 3 shows the main body assembled to a point ready to receive some paint, with the parts separated and pinned to wooden blocks. To illustrate the ease of fitting the additional parts Photo 4 shows the arms, Gunnar and Bagman loose fitted. With minimal clean-up of parts required the assembly was pretty straightforward and only took around 30 minutes.

PAINTING

I always prefer to work up from a black so an airbrushed base coat of Scale 75’s Scale Color Flat Black SC-00 has been applied to the whole figure and parts, see Photo 5 . The flesh is first on my agenda and it’s one of the most striking aspects of Rogue Trooper. Via the airbrush Rogue has received a top down spray of Scale Color Sky Blue SC-50. This helps speed up the coverage of the black and also gives a natural reference for the shade and highlight areas. See Photos 6 – 8 . With the brush work next, the wet palette (Photo 9) is loaded up with all the colours I’ll need for the blue flesh. Six shades of blue are mixed (Photo 10) stemming U

Due to the very matt nature of the paint which is aided by the fact that the first couple of layers are airbrushed, the thinly brushed layers soak nicely into the surface, allowing controlled transitions. Exactly the same goes for the shades, only working from left to right on the palette. The wet palette enables me to work very quickly, Photo 11 shows the initial highlights which, aided

by the top down airbrush coat, have already significantly defined the torso’s musculature. Further highlights are added, as seen in Photo 12 , along with Rogue's glowing eyes. Photo 13 shows the progression of the arms, it’s always wise to be mindful of the final position of parts when painting them separately so as to maintain the correct lighting. Happy with the stage the flesh has reached I have now moved onto the equipment using the following colours, listed from dark to light;

Vallejo USA Olive Drab 70889, Arabic Shadow SC-22, Iroko SC-27, Basic Flesh SC-20 and Thar Brown SC-61 (Photo 14). Again using the airbrush I have primed the separate parts (Photo 15) with Arabic Shadow SC:22. After masking off the torso with cling-film I have also primed the trousers and pouches with the same colour. Although the trousers won’t end up this colour it’s still a good ground to apply their final green shade. After some tidying up with a brush and a couple of coats of Tamiya semi clear gloss it’s done. One home-made nameplate made by recycling the box! CONCLUSION This miniature was an absolute joy to paint for a number of reasons. Firstly being a fan of 2000AD and having such a perfectly rendered version of Rogue Trooper to work on was so great. The model is totally accurate in all aspects, finely cast, well detailed and was clearly born from true

respect for the srcinal art of the 2000AD comics. From a figure painting perspective if you ever have the opportunity to paint blue flesh then take it! The figure offered different challenges to my usual historical miniatures and taking on different subjects can only help broaden skills in my opinion.

ast month we took a detailed look at this very impressive new kit from Tamiya, offering some hints and tips on its construction, ready for final painting and assembly. If you’ve stayed with us this far, you’ll know that this is a kit to enjoy, all of the pieces being well detailed and precisely engineered, fit and finish being almost perfect. This time around we’ll showcase the completed model and

offer a few photographs of the model during painting and weathering. Though we’ve not created a true ‘step-by-step’ feature, you will hopefully find enough to spur you on, should you want to either build this kit, or something similar for your own collection. In terms of tools and techniques, this model has been painted with Gunze Sangyo paints and weathered simply with Tamiya Acrylics and oil

paint washes. Though the finish looks complex, it really isn’t, fine layers of colour being built up over a basic camouflage scheme that needs little more than some forward planning and the careful application of paint. Thankfully, the model is designed is such a way as to facilitate the breaking down of the airframe into smaller subassemblies that can be worked on individually and then brought together U

we had the fuselage and inner wings; the outer wing panels; the individual flaps; the undercarriage legs, wheels and doors; the engine and cowling panels and finally, the canopy. The fit is such that these sections can be painted and weathered and then brought together with no fear of gaps or other fit issues, everything dropping into place to be held there with little more than a brush full of liquid glue, or a drop of cyanoacrylate. Though the kit offers two attractive aircraft on its decal sheet, the fact that we had built a number of American aircraft for both our Corsair book and this magazine, forced us to look for something a little different. Initially we looked at a Fleet Air Arm version, but once again Brett Green had that covered so we chose to build a Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) F4U-1A – but which one? Leafing through our references and online, there were plenty of choices, some in three-tone camouflage and some in overall Gloss Sea Blue. U

The model was fully painted using Gunze Sangyo acrylics. The rear end was first sprayed with H332 Light Aircraft Grey (white being too stark on a weathered model such as this) followed by C366 Intermediate Blue and then Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue. The rear end was then masked and the nose and wings sprayed with a lightened Gloss Sea Blue mixed from C365 Gloss Sea Blue cut through with a few drops of H65 RLM65 Light Blue. All of the colours were thinned 50/50 with Mr Color Leveling Thinner before being glazed on in very thin layers. Once happy with the application of the paint, the model was left overnight to dry.


Though the upper wing looks as if it was ‘pre-shaded’ it has actually been post-shaded and post-highlighted with multiple layers of lightened and darkened shades of the basic Gloss Sea Blue mix: lightened with increasing layers of RLM 65 and then darkened with drops of Semi Gloss Black and full strength GSB. The trick here was to work slowly, create very subtle shifts in tone and not work on too great an area at any one time.

V Being careful with variants was important; though many of these looked like -1A variants, many were -1Ds so cross-referencing became paramount and then the perfect aircraft was found… Flicking through my books, one aircraft stood out, a spliced together F4U-1A that was reconstructed from the rear end of NZ5272 and the forward section of a

recently repainted NZ5307. This aircraft was then renumbered NZ5307, before being placed back in service with 1SU/18 Squadron flying from Guadalcanal during October of 1944. The difference in colours between these two sections was appealing and would help create a visually different looking model. All I needed to do was find some decals for the national markings, these coming from a Ventura sheet (V3269) that supplied the necessary markings for an overall GSB F4U-1 from No.30 Servicing Unit. The remaining markings came from generic sheets of letters and numbers. If you wish to complete your model in these colours, Xtradecal have produced a sheet of markings that include this scheme. Numbered X32057, it should be available from Hannants by the time this issue goes to press. Over the next few pages we’ll take you through the completion of this model, offering a few hints and tips along the way. This then is our F4U-1A Corsair – we hope you like it! 

The tail was painted in the same way, care being taken to ensure that the colours looked to have faded equally. Though the upper blue colour was distinct when first applied to these aircraft, over time and subjected to the ravages of use in the Pacific, it faded to a level where it was almost indistinguishable from the Intermediate Blue used on the fuselage sides. That being so, the colours were shaded highlighted and then both theand GSB and Intermediate blue oversprayed with fine layers of light blue to further blend them together. Happy that the model looked good, everything was sprayed with three thin layers of Tamiya X-22 Clear ready for the decals. The Ventura decals worked like a charm, settling down perfectly over the delicate surface detail with the aid of Daco’s Strong setting solution and Gunze Sangyo’s Mr Mark Softer. With the decals dry, Tamiya X-22 Clear was mixed with three drops of Gunze Sangyo Flat Base to create the most wonderful, satin varnish. Thinned with around 60% Leveling Thinner, the varnish was glazed over the model until the paintwork was perfectly smooth and even. Note how the use of the varnish has helped bring out all of those different tones applied earlier.

With the masking removed, the cockpit opening comes into view. This image gives you a good idea of why accurate masking is so important to the look of a detailed model such as this.

Weathering is in full swing! The panel lines have been carefully defined with thin washes of Raw Umber oil paint, darkened with Humbrol Matt Black and then thinned with white spirit. Once in place, a very thin mix of Tamiya Flat Black and Red brown, thinned with 90% Mr Color Thinner was used to further define the panels and add extra layers of dirt and degradation on the surface of the model.

The application of the black/red brown mix has been particularly successful around the tail, the very thin nature of this paint allowing fine build-ups of colour without fear of overdoing the effect. Note the delicate paint chips added using Vallejo acrylics.

Compare this shot of the upper wings with those seen earlier. The application of further layers of dirt and grime along with delicate paint chips has really brought these sections to life. Note the repair patch on the starboard wing. This was made from a rectangle of aluminium plumber’s tape, oversprayed with Tamiya Neutral Grey.



The beautifully detailed engine is now at home within its cowling. The cowling panels have been painted, shaded and highlighted, but as yet, not fully weathered – this will be done once the engine is fixed to the rest of the airframe.

Knowing that the front end of this aircraft had recently been painted in GSB, the application of paint ships was kept intentionally low. Note the metallic chips around the cockpit sill and the revealed primer around the wing root and edges of the engine access panels.

Mini Review... ZVEZDA 1:100 GERMAN LIGHT ARMOURED CAR SD.KFZ.222 ITEM no.6157 www.hobbyco.net


One of the latest additions to Zvezda’s line of miniature armour is the familiar Sd.Kfz.222. As with other releases in the line-up, the detail is remarkably good, with the grilles atop the hull delicately rendered. The chassis is provided as an individual part, offering better detail than if moulded in with the hull.

ANY COLOUR, SO LONG AS IT'S GREEN! Chris Jerrett describes his processes

for weathering up one of Tamiya's most popular armour kits, the Russian T-55

P

eople often ask me to recommend post-war tank to build and without hesitation I always recommend Tamiya's 1:35 T-55. The real tank was manufactured in the thousands (20,000 to be exact), it has served in many armies and is still in service today so finding an interesting way to finish it is not a problem. The only thing about my recommendation, is I have never built and finished the kit myself! I only based my opinion on viewing the kit parts, so it was high time to get cracking on this iconic beast and construct one of my own. Modellers like to depict their Tamiya T-55s from various armies from around the world, but I seldom see a Soviet T-55; maybe the plain green paint is not that interesting. So, a Soviet tank it shall be! The kit has parts and decals for five versions, so forming a plan using references was step one. I decided to make my model unique by swapping some kit parts for resin parts that represent earlier tank parts and a box that had a little better detail. At

this point I like to get the heavier work done while there are no small parts on the kit, to avoid damage (Image 1). Some filling and sanding is required in certain areas, although the fit of parts for the kit in general are the best you'll encounter.(Image 2). I cut away all the fenders both front and rear as these are often removed after they are damaged. The Soviet forces in Afghanistan had limited resupply, so once the fenders where gone there was no immediate replacement (Image 3). I rebuilt the hinge detail with plastic rod and card. (Image 4). The kit's plastic turret handles are well done, but I had concerns for the delicate plastic part holding up during the intensive finishing stages, so wire replacements were fabricated and fitted. (Image 5). I used lead foil to remake the exhaust's heat cover, simply by pressing a piece of the foil onto the kit part to producing more realistic ribbing.(Image 6). Other extras used on this model include a metal barrel from Jordi Rubio, Friulmodel metal

tracks and tow-cables from Eureka. These cables are made from pliable wire with cast resin end-pieces.(Image 7). I finished off the build by adding the pipework to the fender fuel tanks using wire, one downside to a T-55 build. Also, the wooden splash plate on the front of the hull was replaced with one I made from plastic card, with some wood grain scribed into the plastic using a scalpel blade. Now the build is complete, it's time to paint. (Image 8)

PAINTING THE MODEL

Painting started with a primer coat and for this I used an acrylic based paint From AK interactive. The paint is pre-mixed and ready to go, straight from the bottle, drying to a smooth, satin sheen. I chose to use black as I wanted to have all recessed areas darkened. (Image 9). As I wanted to finish the model with a rusty appearance from the long fight in the Afghan c limate, I started with a rust layer that would be covered and U

chipping fluid (hairspray will work too). For the rust tone I mixed Tamiya X-6 Orange with X-9 Brown (both gloss paints) to create a rusty brown look. I then gave this a gloss clear coat as the next layer would be easier to remove from the smoother surface of the gloss paint. (Image 10).

ANY SHADE OF GREEN!

For the Russian green tone, just about anything will do, as the greens the Russian Army use have a wide variety of tones. I find in my research and in travelling to tank museums that there are as many tones of Russian green as there are Russian vehicles! That being said, I wanted to use a darker green for this project. For my colour I mixed Tamiya XF-13 JA Green with XF-81 RAF Dark Green. White or black paint were added for the highlighted areas and low recessed areas. Some of the rear panels were left off the main hull to ease painting and to create a variety of tones, representing faded paint (Image 11). Now the turret hull and parts were sprayed with chipping fluid (Image 12) and when the fluid was dry (fifteen minutes) I began the chipping process. The areas U 46 February 2015 TMMI 232

V where I wanted the chips to appear were rubbed with a stiff brush dipped in water. The green paint layer sits on top of the chipping fluid and when the water penetrates it, the fluid softens, allowing the green layer on top to lift off in realistic-looking flakes. (Image 13). To keep

it I didn't go too farrealistic with the chipping. A subtle appearance is what you want to achieve as this is the first step to creating the rust tones (Image 14). The decals were now applied over a clear coat, which is important to protect the soft finish of the chipped layer below (Image 15). After some regular colour-washes of thinned enamels I started with the chipping. I used Vallejo paints for this as it brushes well and covers very well. The chip work started with lightened shades of the green top coat (Image 16). At this point – before the next phase of the chipping – I used green oil paints to blend and fade all the different tones of the main camouflage paint. I simply brushed it on with a fine paint-brush at the edges, then drew it inward on panels with a wide brush moistened with artist's thinner (Image 17). With so many tones of green I like to create an overlaying coloured 'filter' (or glaze) to bring them all together. I sprayed on a light layer of Tamiya X-25 Clear Green diluted with X-22 Clear and thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. (Image 18). I now followed up with the rust, applying a rust tone in the centre of the light green areas. A piece of sponge can help speed up this process (Image 19). Oil paints were then used to add rust tones and further chipping to the model's surface. I used the same technique to move the oil paint into position as I did with the green tones. I mixed up slightly different shades for various parts of the model to avoid a uniform appearance (Image 20).

I started by completely covering the lower hull with Tamiya XF-72 JGSDF Brown sprayed with the airbrush on low pressure, the paint thinned with 65%

water to create a dusty look (Image 21). I use the same paint and technique to create dust spots on the top surfaces. The lower hull was covered in a dirt mix of one part real dirt, three parts dust-coloured pigment, one part plaster and two parts Tamiya thinner X-20A. The mixture was plastered on in

a random pattern (Image 22). The tone can be adjusted later with darker or lighter pigment colours, flicked on with a stiff brush; I never concern myself with the tone being right or wrong! Multiple applications are required to give it some depth. The pigment I used in the heavy dirt mix was then used on the top

THE WEATHERING

To fix the dust in place, a proprietary fixer from AK interactive was used.

This enamel-based fluid is soan it can be coloured with enamel paints.(Image 24). I wanted to create an extra-used look to my model, with grease and other various fluid build-ups in and around moving parts. For this, I simply use oil paints to create a black/ brown oily tone I add slow-dry compound to get a thick, glossy mix. The greasy grunge is then carefully applied with a fine brush (Image25). To add depth to the dust and dirt I added small amounts of my previous dirt mix on the top surfaces where dirt might accumulate. The mix crumbles easily once it has dried for a day or two.(Image 26)

THE FINISH

With all the weathering done, it was time to fine-tune the effects and revive some effects that may have been buried by the

preceding stages. I first used various enamel colours to recreate highlights (for this I use commercial pre-mixed colours) which are great products that allow you to

concentrate more on the finish and less on mixing the right tones (Image 27). I then re-highlighted some of the raised surface detail, using Vallejo paints in a U



Views of the finished model reveal the multi-layered finish the author has described on previous pages. By working in this way, a more visually engaging effect can be created, which is much more satisfying to look at than a one-dimensional, single layered finish.

V variety of shades of the main top coat (Image 28). When a big chunk of steel and metal heats and cools, condensation is inevitable. To create this look of moisture, I used 'Wet Effects' from Mig Productions, which is basically diluted gloss varnish. This was applied with a fine brush (Image 29).

For an ‘boring’ overall green tank, it has many shades and tones of weathering.

FINAL TOUCHES The final brush work was the silvering of parts that may see continual buffing from the crew. Once again, pigments were used (Image 30). Now that I have completed this iconic military vehicle and model

kit, I have to say I was right with all my recommendations. This is one great kit and my research into the tank service has opened up some other possibilities for future builds. 

Now we actually have the full-production model in hand, it’s interesting to see the features close at hand. The kit comes in a smaller than expected box with truly magnificent box-art, emphasising the low-slung stance of the vehicle. Just four sprues plus upper and lower hulls will be found in the box, all moulded in standard sand-yellow polystyrene. The tracks are the one-piece style, soft vinyl type and are excellent. Even if you do not like this type of track, don’t just fling them in the bin, they really are very good. Surface detail on the kit plastic parts is superb and Tamiya’s ability to engineer parts for a watertight fit is widely in evidence. MN

A well detailed engine, the block of which is cleverly moulded in with the front wheel-arch liners is supplied and with the ancillary parts added it looks excellent. Chromed tips are provided for the revised exhaust, while the new wheels come in satin chrome. Found within the decal bag are two extremely welcome additions; a sheet of pre-cut window masks for the windscreen’s black edges and chromed and self-adhesive mirror faces and badge plates, excellent stuff.MN

Plus Model offer some weird (in a good way) and wonderful kits and their latest will please many armour modellers who are looking for something a little different to build. It’s a road scraper of the type used by the US forces from the 1940s, 1950s and right up to the Vietnam War and also by civilian engineers. Perhaps the best known users of this machine was the United States Navy Construction Battalion, the famous ‘SeaBees’, who used them in the Pacific to build landing strips for US aircraft. The kit is cast in pale greengrey resin plus a sheet of photo-etched brass, waterslide decals and some copper wire. Also in the box is a clearto-follow instruction booklet and a CD of images that show the model during construction which is very useful. A complex but fantastically srcinal kit with a huge amount of detail. MN

Even after several decades, the VW Golf Mk.I is still one of the best car designs of all time and examples in good condition can still demand impressive quantities of cash. This new-tool kit from Revell is therefore very welcome, and a mighty fine job they have done of it. One look at the bodyshell alone shows that the designers have studied the car in detail; its profile appears to be spot-on. The model comes with full engine detail, suspension system and a comprehensive interior which includes options for a left or righthand drive vehicle (dashboard and foot pedal positions), a nice touch. The iconic golfball gear-knob is replicated in miniature and decals are provided for the tartan seat panels inserts; fantastic! MN

B (early variant) with new, additional parts to create the multiple ‘Stuka Zu Fuss’ wurfrahmen rocket launcher system. It transforms the workaday ‘251 into a fearsome-looking ‘Stuka on foot’ rocket launcher version, giving the modeller some appealingly complex structures to assemble. Three rows of bolt-on, tubularframework mounts straddle the fighting compartment, to which the rocket rounds are fitted, within there wooden launch ‘boxes’.The kit is well detailed and comes with individual-link tracks and a complete engine, viewable through the open access hatch.MN

In this new release from Eduard, we have the superb plastic mouldings from Asuka (formerly Tasca) masking up the bulk of the tank, with supplementary photo-etched set from Eduard providing mud guards and mounting strips, tool brackets, M2 .50cal parts plus other useful items and a new sheet of decals for two D-Day/Normandy Shermans and two machines based in Italy, 1944. The kit parts are sublime, making this easily the best out-of-the-box M4A1 yet produced, and with the extra metal parts and new markings, it really is a fantastic production.MN

Scale; 1:32 • Materials; IM, PE, WS Kit number; KH32003 This is a kit that we have been pretty excited about at TMMI and now it’s here, it is fascinating to see it ‘in the plastic’. Kittyhawk have really gone to town with this model and the parts breakdown is extensive and complex; seven large sprues of grey polystyrene make up the airframe and ordnance with a large clear sprue for ‘that’ canopy.. The latter area is crucial to the success of the model and sensibly, it has been broken down into individual panels which should ease both the masking/ painting process as well as fitting to the model. The airframe is beautifully rendered with fine recessed panel lines and even finer rivet lines, all well within scale and authentic-looking. The cockpit is highly detailed (just as well with so much on show) and both turboprop engines depicted in full and able to be seen thanks to cowlings that can be installed in the open position. MN

As with all their preceding WW1 aircraft kit releases, this new model consists of gorgeous grey

plastic sprues crammed with refined parts covered on all surfaces with extraordinary levels of detail. The instructions are some of the best in the business and it comes with sheets of amazing decals, providing the lozenge camouflage fabric. Utterly wonderful. MN

A ARGE MELDIU M,-SC WEALE LL DONE! Revell’s latest ship kit depicts the United States Navy LSM and comes with a complement of tanks, armoured cars and trucks

T

his very attractive new kit from Revell depicts a WW2 United States Navy LSM, a medium-size vessel designed specifically for beach landings. Over 550 LSMs were used from the middle of 1944 onwards by the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre of Operations while fighting the Imperial Japanese forces. They formed the main component of the US amphibious force, with a loading capacity of an LSM roughly equivalent to a mechanized platoon. The LSM had an anchor at the stern, allowing the ship to pull itself off the beach independently, thereby offering a quick turn-around in action. The LSM had double bow-doors and steel ramp for direct vehicle disembarkation onto the beach. The entire central

channel was built as an open deck for vehicles and equipment, with a pair of defensive gun turrets just behind the bow, amidships and above the stern, each mounting a 20mm Oerliken gun. Revell’s model is in the scale of 1:144, half the size of 1:72, so the kit is of a good size (443mm) as you can see in the photos below. The hull is split in half lengthways and as the ship has a flat bottom, there should be no need for any cutting to depict it in a seascape/landing scene. The bow doors and ramp are hinged and can be posed in the open or closed positions and a display based is included in the box to show off the model in its full-hull configuration. Revell haven’t been stingy with a cargo load for the model; they

provide three M4 Shermans, three M8 Greyhounds (a few were deployed to the PTO) and three GMC trucks to fill the deck, plus decals for four ships, all USN based in the Pacific; LSM-14, 1944, LSM-133, 1944, LSM-201, 1945 and LSM-210, 1945. The only thing missing is a crew; in this scale, fully-round figures would be needed and they would bring a touch of human life and scale to this otherwise excellent kit. 

HOW TO BUILD... REVELL 1:32 SPITFIRE MK.IIA The name Spitfire has now becomesynonymous with an entire island people, and their battle to maintain their freedom in the shadow of the Nazi jackboot. The very shape and sound of the Spitfire seems to still invoke and embody the usually reserved pride of the British person. It is probably true to say that Reginald Mitchell’s beautiful aircraft design is one of the most easily recognised and much-loved shapes that ever took to theskies. When actual mass production of the Spitfire ceased in 1948, over 20,000 machines had been built, and operated by over thirty countries around the world. However today, he is almost forgotten. This impressive new 208+ page, hard-bound book from German publisher Luftfahrtverlag Start chronicles Barkhorn’s wartime experiences with Jagdgeschwader 2 over the English Channel, Jagdgeschwader 52, Jagdgeschwader 6 and finally Jagdverband 44. The book is produced to an extremely high standard, using glossy art-paper to make the very best of the many wartime photographs that make it so irresistible to modellers and WW2 historians alike. Excerpts from srcinal combat reports offer the reader a chance to get a taste of the dramatic events of aerial combat, and maps are included throughout to show where the action took place. But it is the fabulous and rare wartime photos, a good number of which are in real colour, scanned from srcinal Agfa slides (not colourised) that are the star of the book, making it worth every penny of the fifty-four Euro asking price. If you’re into Luftwaffe subjects and also want to read up on one of Germany’s most unsung aces, this book is unmissable. MN

robably one of the best known US Army M8 Greyhounds is C-30 ‘Colbert’ of 3rd Platoon, C Company, 82nd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Armored Division. The vehicle sits in the street of a Normandy town as the crew observe a terrace of houses on fire. Of note for modellers is the extensive stowage on the outside of the turret; there wasn’t much space inside for crew gear. Other interesting details include the rear-facing .50cal heavy MG, the tied-back radio aerial and what appear to be bright metal tin cans on the hull-side stowage rack behind the front wheel. 

Tamiya’s 1:35 M8 was released quite a few years back but is still a superb model, with the company’s legendary standards of parts-fit and fine detail. ‘Colbert’ is such a well known machine, it forms one of the subjects on Tamiya’s decal sheet. In the years following the model’s release, many aftermarket products have been issued, offering replacement resin wheels, photoetched sheet metal replacement parts and more, so you can really go to town on the model. Italeri also offer their own 1:35 kit of the Greyhound and it’s a good quality production; perhaps not as refined as Tamiya’s model but good in its own right. With quite a few new US/Allied military truck kits hitting the market in recent months and years, many opportunities for interesting settings have presented themselves; street scene dioramas, depot and maintenance scenes, ‘Red Ball Express’ and even D-Day beach dioramas. But have you considered something as dramatic as this? In this wartime shot we see a Diamond T variant being lifted onto a landing ship, prior to the commencement of ‘Operation Neptune’, the amphibious part of the D-Day landings. The vehicle has driven onto specially designed netting, cradling at least 50% of the tyres’ lower halves. Heavy cables and chains lead up to a lifting frame (out of shot) which is then connected to a crane. It must have been quite a sight, seeing such a big beast of a truck being hoisted into the air and onto the deck of the ship! The dockers in the bottom right of the photo are clearly impressed by the view too. In model form, it would take some ingenuity to bring this to life, but with some inventive design, it could be possible. I’d love to see this scene re-created in 1:35, or even 1:48! Specialised netting and lifting gear is employed here, to take the weight of the truck.
