nce again, the Tamiya Model Magazine team packed up the van with the display stand plus half a ton of magazines and books and took the two-hour drive north to Shropshire to attend Scale Modelworld 2014. This incredible event combines three main elements; IPMS model clubs, the competition and vendors and the combination makes an irresistible attraction for scale modellers, not just from the UK but the whole world. In the following pages we can see a small selection of photos taken in the competition room showing some of the talent on show including aircraft, armour, cars, bikes, trucks, ship, science-fiction and more. To see the new kit releases from the show, please turn to page fifty-six, where we have turned this month's 'New Releases Kits' into a show special. he Type 49 made its debut in 1967 and was another groundbreaking piece of racing car engineering from Team Lotus which featured an innovative structural design that mounted the Cosworth DFV V8 engine directly to the rear bulkhead as a stressed member. Thus, the powerplant became an

Prix, its first F1 race. Three further wins followed that season as the car was piloted by the iconic duo of Jim Clark and Graham Hill and in the next year five more victories were added. The Type 49 contributed to two Constructors' titles before it was retired in 1970. Tamiya's kit certainly is a classic and has been in

he Tamiya T-72 kit has great detail that includes many of the weld seams moulded perfectly in scale. I always like to add my own personal touches and details; I assembled the main parts and then plan out what I would like to improve (image 1). The rear of the turret in the kit is based on the shape of an East German T72, so the first step was to extend the turret rear using card putty. With the help and of a 1:35 scale drawing of the turret I shaped it to resemble a T-72M1 turret (image 2). The Czech Army has a particular towing connection for its T72s and I wanted to add one, but there isn't one manufactured in 1:35 scale so I made my own, using plastic and some old kit parts (image 3). Other additions include smoke dischargers from ET models and a barrel from RB. The gun mantlet cover on the kit was a little small, so I boosted its size with epoxy putty. The conduit was detailed with plastic (image 4). All done, I replaced the kit tracks with Friuls to get that realistic sag. The tow cables are from Eureka. With this addition the Tamiya kit looks great, even with out paint (image 5). TIME FOR PAINT
ATE!
I started the airbrush work with a mixture of Tamiya XF acrylic paints to recreate a Russian green colour, with a little 'built-in' fading. I created some highlighting on the top surfaces by adding Tamiya XF-2 Flat White to my base colour mix (image 6). After a gloss coat using Tamiya X-22 Clear, I set the model aside for the paint to dry hard. This is important because for the chipping you will need a tough base surface. I mixed up my Czech camo colours (again, from Tamiya Acrylics, using photos as a guide) and had them ready for the time-sensitive chipping phase. I applied some thin, even coats of AK Interactive's chipping fluid (you can also use hairspray) and let that dry for thirty minutes. Using the guide provided in the Echelon decals for the Czech T-72, I sprayed the camo pattern, trying to not waste time as the chipping fluid will dry too much! (image 7). TMMI 231 January

At this point I used a short-tipped paint brush dipped in water and began removing the paint gently. It is a simple procedure, and a dry paper towel is on hand to manage the excess water (image 8). I kept some pictures of the real thing close to hand so I could make sure the scratched details were accurate (image 9). THE DIRTYING-UP

CONTINUES The weathering for a tank as old as a T-72 that is still in service is very specific; you want to show its age and the effects of continuous up-keep. I like to start with a series of washes (the ready to use washes are simple to use and help speed up the process). For the first wash I applied some brown colour and used thinners to spread the liquid out on the model. The excess was removed with a clean brush and wiped on a paper towel (image 10). For heavier staining I used oil paints, brushing them in heavy into the deeper detail then gently drawing them away with a
wide brush, dampened with thinners (image 11). During the weathering stages I also added scratches and chips to detail parts. For some of the aluminium parts I used Tamiya paint, as they work very well for detail painting. You want to be careful not to overdo this as the silver tone tends to attract the eye of the viewer (image 12). I also use lightened tones of the base colours to further enhance the worn paint (image 13). A sponge was used to create super fine scratches and rusty spots (image 14) and during the fine paint work stage I also paint the details that are of different colours. The canvas cover was painted using Humbrols as I find that these materials are the best for painting fabrics (image 15). Additional, localised colour-washes – often called pin washes – were applied in a controlled way. These replicate rust stains and dirt build up (image 16). In some instances, I injected colour-washes into tight areas using a blunt-tipped hypodermic needle (image 17). The first step in the creation of the

dust-build up was made using pigments mixed with enamel paints. The mix was washed into the recesses using a fine brush. I take care not to overdo this as the pigment mix is hard to visualize in its wet form, so I do it in several stages over a two or three day period

(image 18). Airbrushed-on dust is a trick that works on almost every model. The level of intensity depends on how much you thin the paint. Once the dust has been sprayed you can change the tone to suit your needs, using oil or enamel paints (image 19). MUD PLUGGER For this model the side skirts are staying on, so the mud will be controlled. I wanted to get the dried mud look on the lower hull and road wheels. I experimented with pigments but they always dried with full coverage, meaning they covered the details in an overall coat. I added some
real dirt to my regular mix and it was closer, but still not what I was looking for. The solution turned out to be gravel and sand fixer, used as the binder. The mud mix has a gel texture (images 20, 21). For the inside of the road wheels I wanted a wet look, so a darker enamel wash was brushed on (image 22). A little mud splatter was in order but I certainly didn’t want to cover up the camo paint, so I used a plaster pigment mixed with thinner. The mixture was gently

Gloss black paint was employed for heavy grease and engine oil from AK Interactive was used for spilt fuel (images 24, 25). Silvering was created with a powder dark steel from AK (image 26). FINAL THOUGHTS The T72 is an iconic tank of the cold war that is still in service today with many countries. Using the Tamiya kit and a variety of after market bits you can build and finish a T72

Essentially a replica of an upgraded aircraft, this new kit features almost 90% of the kit parts from the earlier release, new runners offering the semi-bubble canopy,

and modified cockpit interior that set the two versions apart. You’ll also find some more subtle changes: extended tail wheel; choice of early or later distributor housings and ignition harness; instrument panel, wedge-shaped addition to the right wing’s leading edge and gunsight, amongst others. Within the pages of this magazine and our “How To Build… Tamiya’s 1:32 F4U-1
in detail the quality of this family of kits, but perhaps for those still not familiar with it, a few points here may not go amiss. Across the board detail is astonishing, the levels of finesse apparent over the surface of the airframe being better than anything seen thus far. The depiction of the panel lines, rivets and fasteners is simply exquisite. Add to that a degree of
tolerance between the individual components and a cleverness of design that means clean-up is kept to a minimum, and the pleasure possible from this kit, is there for all to see. Dig a little deeper and you will find a truly comprehensive package that offers a full cockpit, a beautiful depiction of the P&W R-2800-8W engine, full-depth undercarriage and tailwheel bays, folded
Construction begins with the cockpit and the rear bulkhead and seat. This is one of the changes in this kit, the seat in the -1A being raised up 17 cm to increase visibility through the semi-bubble canopy. The seat is built up from a number of well-moulded parts before being mounted onto the delicate framework that connects it with the rear bulkhead. In order to simplify painting, the seat and bulkhead were kept separate.

or extended wings, separate control surfaces and a complete set of glazed pieces that deal with not only that distinctive canopy, but also smaller items such as the lights, gunsight and other fittings. Fit is extraordinary. This is the second 1:32 Corsair I’ve built and other than having to fill a number of differentiating features, filler has been absolutely absent from the builds.
There were a few seams to deal with as the large wing halves and fuselage shells were joined (as you would expect) but that was it, all of the airframe being built up along natural panel lines and breaks, only the merest hint of Tamiya Extra Thin Cement being needed to keep everything in place. The model offers a choice of folded or extended wings, a cleverly designed spar holding each section perfectly in place. The lower wing panel is supplied in one piece and as such, is a wonderful example of the toolmaker’s art. Separate sections in the instructions take you through construction of the folded and extended wings.
V change in this one that’s definitely for the better – the instructions. Previously, the kit instructions dealt with the complete wing assembly as part of the main body of the booklet, using notes and callouts to describe what went where. Though this was well done (as indeed we expect from Tamiya!) it was still confusing, needing
plenty of care and attention to ensure everything was present and correct. That being so, Tamiya have taken a look at the instructions and in this case drawn up two complete sections that cover assembly of both the extended wings and then, the folded sections. You just use the pages that you need and ignore the rest – much easier to understand and far easier to follow. Tamiya’s instructions have always been the best in the business, this clever, carefully thought out change, simply reinforces that opinion. As you may imagine, Tamiya have played safe with the colour schemes, choosing three different aircraft – two Marine Corps aircraft and one from the US Navy. The choices are as follows: US Marine Corps VMF-111, Gilbert Islands, 1944 US Navy VF-17 Squadron Leader, Ondonga Airfield, New Georgia Island, Solomon Islands, November 15th, 1943 US Marine Corps VMF-214, Vella Lavella Island, December 1943 Though these options are well thought out and the decals excellent, we thought it might be fun to build something a little different, which we will reveal next month when we finish this model and show you the results. I could wax lyrical over the kit for hours, but it may be better to actually show you what it is all about. Over the next few pages I will describe in depth the initial construction steps, the interior, engine and airframe and point out where necessary any interesting points and finishing ideas. This then is Tamiya’s F4U-1A Corsair – I hope you like it!

A brush full of liquid glue is all that is needed to hold these parts in place.
The main undercarriage legs are a wonderful part of the kit, being comprehensively detailed and a blast to assemble. Lengths of metal rod, trapped between the two halves of the leg, add a reassuring degree of strength to these delicate sub-assemblies.
Though time precluded their use on this model, Barracuda Studios offer a superb set of resin wheels that replace the plastic and soft rubber items supplied in the kit. Clean-up is easy and the detail a cut above that offered by Tamiya.
Though invisible inside the wings of this model, the radiators are detailed with fine, etched-steel facings. These were painted black and the grills picked out with Humbrol Silver darkened with a little Raw Umber oil paint.

Painting of the cockpit has begun. Though considered by many to be an old-fashioned technique, drybrushing can certainly help to accentuate detail, as indeed can be seen here. The finer details around the consoles were picked out with Humbrol enamels following the painting guide supplied in the kit. There’s a way to go yet, but things are starting to come together nicely…
Though almost entirely invisible inside the model, the interior surfaces of the wings and the complex radiators were fully assembled and painted before joining the wings halves. Unlike the earlier Birdcage kit that had some internal areas painted in Salmon Pink, this one is entirely finished in Interior Green.
The rear bulkhead has been completed and the seat, complete with straps, fixed in place. Careful painting and weathering has helped to bring out all of the finer details, a small stencil decal adding the finishing touch. This little radiator is a cool detail that vanishes never to be seen again! Make the most of it here – soon, it will be gone forever.
The radiators that are visible inside the wings are constructed from both plastic and etched metal, the latter helping to recreate that delicate looking framework.
Considerable time is needed to construct, paint and weather these three sub-assemblies, but that is time well spent, the results being superb, straight from the box.

This is made up from a plastic panel, clear faceplate and reversed decals that are applied to the outer surface of the latter to allow the instrument designs to shine through. Carefully applied layers of drybrushed grey bring out the dial surrounds, before picking out the smaller details in acrylics.
As with the rear bulkhead, the front bulkhead repays careful assembly and painting, especially the instrument panel, with its delicate detail and glazed instruments.
The completely assembled engine shows off for the camera. With care and attention,There is no doubt that the addition of ignition wires would the engine can look very good even if built from the box. Thanks to some very clever design, much of the cockpit can be painted almost completely using the airbrush, only small details needing to be painted with a traditional brush.
As with many of the models that I build for TMMI, though a warbird, weathering inside the cockpit was kept down to allow the detail to shine through. In this shot those new seat straps really add to the look of the completed cockpit as does the care taken to ensure that all of the finer details are visible and well defined.
The coaming is one of the areas of the model that differs from that seen in the Birdcage variant, the reflector gunsight and associated controls being noticeably more complex than those seen inside the earlier Dash One. The clear plastic trim wheels are noticeable in this shot, as are the red knobs and levers that add a splash of colour to an area almost entirely finished in green and black!
The fuselage is completely assembled and almost ready to paint. Without exception, all of the parts fit flawlessly together, the interior parts needing virtually no glue to hold them in place. Clean up is quick too thanks to the use of large panels that deal with most of the spine and nose joints.

RAVISHINGLY he Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa is one of Ferrari's most iconic cars of the 1950s and 60s; not to be confused with the 1984 Ferrari Testarossa, written in one word! In all, thirty-four Ferrari 250 Testa Rossas were built, from 1956 to 1961. The phrase 'Testa Rossa' means 'red head' and the most famous type – the 250 TR – was produced from 1957 to 1958. Only two factory cars and nineteen customer cars were built. After the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Ferrari 250

Testa Rossa is the second most valuable Ferrari ever, often valued at more than $8,000,000! Named for the red valve covers, the srcinal Ferrari 250 TR had unorthodox bodywork by Scaglietti. The front fenders are visually separate from the central 'nacelle' body, a design inspired by Formula One racers, with air ducting across the front brakes and out through the open area behind the wheels. This model is often called the 'Pontoon' TR.
PREPARING THE PROJECT
I chose to build a 'normal' street version of the Testa Rossa, enabling me to appreciate the pure and sleek body lines of this great sports-car from 1958... There are lots of Testa Rossa reference pictures to be found on the internet, but in my opinion it is best to stay with just one particular car when using reference material. That is why I chose to replicate the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa from the Ralph Lauren collection, which
really is a marvellous piece of art. I used the Hasegawa kit (No.21219) for this job and I also used Hobby Design's set No.HD02-0009 which includes three photo-etched frets with all sorts of details, including four wire wheels, four aluminium turned exhaust tips, four air valves for the wheels and an aluminium gear lever. Finally, I also used a set of KA Models N° KC-24003 aluminium turned air funnels.
ARE REDHEAD BODYWORK
The first thing to do is the assembly of the body. Make sure that all the joints are filled and sanded smooth before applying primer. On the other hand, all the panel lines need to be deepened in order to create a realistic shadow once the body has been painted. The body was then sprayed with Tamiya grey primer. After the primer has dried, I applied a first 'mist' coat of Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red, to make sure all the panel lines and corners
were covered with red before applying the 'wet' coats. Next I applied three wet coats of Tamiya TS-08 Italian Red. After the third layer I decided that the finish looked smooth enough at this stage. Obviously, the body still needed to be polished, but the glossy base was already in place. It's hard to see in the pictures, but the bonnet has already been polished to try out the procedure. After the polishing I clear coated the entire body to give it an even glossier finish, after
which a final polishing and waxing job will give it the definitive shine. ENGINE
In the meantime, I started to assemble the engine, discovering clearly why this car was called 'Testa Rossa'. I drilled six holes in the ignition distributors and then I used some fine metal wire to simulate the spark plug cables, which run through a red guide tube and then on to the spark plugs. The guide tube was
made from aluminium tube which I fixed in my Dremel to form the conical shape. At that stage I decided to order some aluminium turned intakes as well, because the plastic kit parts really don’t match the detailing level of the engine. To the right hand side of the engine block I also added the fuel injection pipe and I fixed it to the carburettors. At this stage, I also cemented the gearbox and the exhausts in position. V colour-wash with Tamiya X-19 Smoke and then I put it aside to build the front suspension directly onto the chassis. Finally I fitted the engine into the chassis. The big twelve-cylinder, three litre engine takes up quite a bit of space in the chassis! And as you will have noticed, there are no disc-brakes present in this 1958 car, this Ferrari was stopped with drum brakes! CHASSIS
Once the engine had been installed, the tubular chassis can be built up around it. Hasegawa actually did a pretty good job simulating the tubular frame, which stretches from the engine compartment through the bulkhead and the drivers compartment all the way to the back of the car, although this last part was not modelled by Hasegawa because it will not be visible. Next, I installed the radiator and the steering rod. The gear selector received the photo-etched 'gate' cover, as did the oil filler caps on both sides of the engine and the radiator filler cap. A neat little detail is the sticker with technical data which sits next to the steering rod. From the electric distributors I also add the wiring towards the car interior, where the fuses and battery will sit. The engine compartment is not complete yet because a few hoses and wires still need to be added. Flipping the chassis over, I could now fix the rear suspension and fuel tank to the bottom of the chassis. They both received a Tamiya X-19 Smoke colour-wash as well. The bottom of the car was now complete; later on I would give it a light drybrushing to pick out the details. I didn't add any extra detailing to the 36 January 2015 TMMI 231

underside though, since they wouldn’t be visible once the car's on its wheels. Speaking of wheels, in order to get the car up the right way, all I needed to do was to fix the wheels in place, but the plastic Hasegawa wheels really didn't match the detail level of this model, so I replaced them with some very realistic aftermarket rims by Hobby Design. Each wheel consists of eleven parts (of which eight are photo-etched). The tyres that I put on these rims are the regular Hasegawa kit items. Once the wire wheels were fixed in place, the chassis really comes to life and starts to look like a real car. I was very pleased with the Hobby Design wire wheels, because they gave the model that realistic look which made all the difference; compared to the kit wheels they enhance the model 100%. But keep in mind that using the wire wheels will double the cost of your model as well…
Then I decided to tackle the leather seats. The Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa from the Ralph Lauren collection has very nice looking red leather seats with white piping and that's how I wanted my model’s seats to look like as well, so first I sprayed them with Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red. Next, I added some white to the mixture and I sprayed the highlighted areas. Then I added some flat black to the srcinal red paint and I
sprayed the shadow areas. Afterwards, I corrected small errors with whichever mixture I needed. The multiple coats with different shades of red enhance the depth effect considerably; once the seats are looked good, I sprayed them with a protective flat coat. Next I masked the seats, leaving nothing exposed except the white stitching and then sprayed paint them with Tamiya XF-2 Flat White.
To finish it off, I covered the seats once again with a protective flat coat. Finally I fitted the seats into the drivers compartment. The battery, which sits at the bottom righthand side of the driver's compartment was sprayed white with a black top, after which I added the electric wiring to it and fixed it in place. To the bottom left side I fixed the aftermarket photo-etched pedal set. U

V FINISHING OFF THE BODY At this stage I placed the chassis aside and I concentrated on the body again. Unfortunately, I encountered a little misfortune; I damaged it! When picking it up it slipped through my hands and while trying to grab it, it hit my workbench, slightly scratching the paint-job.
Luckily I could sand away the damaged spot and I managed to do a spot-repair with my airbrush. Next, I polished the complete body once again to give it an even gloss all over. Once I was happy with the result of my repair I applied the (few) decals, followed by a clear coat to protect it from further damage! I let the body dry for a few days to make sure the clear coat had hardened and then I painted the complete body interior semi-gloss black by hand. I also painted the headlight sockets flat aluminium, after which I fixed the headlight lenses. I decided to use the aftermarket photo-etched instrument panel instead of the kit part, which I decorated with the kit dial decals and covered with some two-part epoxy glue to simulate the glass covers. I added some aftermarket switches to the instrument panel as well and I painted the details. I added the indicator stalk to the steering shaft and to the centre of the dashboard I added some switches, plus the ignition lock. I plan to fabricate a key ring with a Ferrari key-fob because it will be cool to put it in the ignition lock. I also made some bonnet toggles and fixed them to the body. Then I fixed the aftermarket photo-etched radiator protection mesh in place, which really made a big difference compared to the plastic kit part. Finally I gave the panel lines a black colour-wash and I once this was finished I polished the whole body one more time. FINISHING OFF THE CHASSIS AND CABIN
I added some white electrical wiring from the dials to the engine and except for the aluminium intake trumpets (which had still not arrived 38 January 2015 TMMI 231
at that time), the work in the engine compartment was finished. I then fixed the gear lever and the hand brake in the driver's compartment. At this time the fuse box is detail painted and installed as well. That pretty much wrapped up the work in the driver's compartment as well.
The author even made a 1:24 key for the ignition!
FINALIZING THE and FERRARI Now the chassis the
body were ready to be united; the (delayed) intake trumpets could be installed with the chassis joined to the body, so there really was nothing preventing me continuing with this build. To be honest, pulling the body over the chassis was a little tricky, since you need to widen it a little in order for it to clear the chassis extremities, but with some caution and a lot of patience, I succeeded with the operation. Once the body was siting in place, I checked the ride-height of the car and I also if the bonnet would still close without touching parts of the engine, which would only be the case if the model had been assembled incorrectly. Nothing of the sort seemed to be the case, so I finally could enjoy how great the engine looked under the open bonnet! The most 'dangerous' operation still to undertake was the fixing of the windscreen. I had to make a choice here: there is a really nice looking photo-etched windscreen support in the aftermarket set, but I was kind of reluctant to use it because I couldn't manage to bend it to the correct shape so it would fit snugly to the body. On the other hand, the Hasegawa kit windscreen fits perfectly, but the plastic is about 1mm thick, resulting in an unrealistic appearance. So I decided on a compromise: I'd use the Hasegawa kit part, but I sanded down the clear windscreen from about 1mm thickness to about 0.1mm to give it a more realistic dimension. The windshield support was covered with Bare Metal Foil and the photo-etched wiper was fixed to the lefthand side of the windscreen. Finally, I fixed the windscreen in place with

some two-part epoxy glue. Phew! I could now relax because the riskiest tasks were behind me. I added the photo-etched details to the bonnet and boot lids, such as the leather straps and the fixing points plus the chromed toggle insert openings. I painted and attached the tail lights and the photo-etched license plate mounting points. CONCLUSION I waited a long time before a renowned company decided to issue a 1:24 plastic kit of the famous Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. When I heard that Hasegawa had announced
the production of this iconic sports car I was very pleased, because I knew that it was going to be a real good looking model, designed and manufactured with state-of-the-art technology. As soon as it came out, I purchased the kit and I also bought aftermarket sets, mainly because it is simply not possible to achieve realistic looking wire wheels using the plastic injection technique. But the shapes of the car are so prominent, so striking, that I have to say that Hasegawa did a great job designing a 1:24 scale model of this car.
The lines and shapes of a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa are so specific that it would be very noticeable if the company had got it wrong; but no such thing occurred. The admiration of the perfectly designed bodywork by Scaglietti is now within the reach of every modeller who can’t afford to purchase the real car! That is the merit of Hasegawa and I think that all car modellers should be thankful for that… So well done Hasegawa, this is a very beautiful looking kit which can be transformed into an even more beautiful looking model. Was it worth the effort? It sure was!

he latest addition to the 1:48 Military Miniature Series depicts the British ‘Dingo’ Mk.II armoured scout car. As you might imagine, the kit is very small and comes moulded on just two modestly proportioned olive-drab polystyrene sprues, but that doesn’t mean it has been compromised in any way; the detail is wonderful inside and out and the inclusion of two figures gives it a real touch of life. The main body (or hull) is moulded in two halves, with a drop-in insert provided for the cabin floor, moulded in with the fuel tank and crew seats. The fenders are moulded individually, cementing directly to the outer walls of the hull; this way, the
detail is far better than integrally moulded items. To the lower hull, a flat chassis is cemented, along with front and rear suspension towers with spring detail. The wheels are moulded in single-pieces with inserts for the inner tyre walls. These mount directly to axle pegs and offer no chance for a ‘steered’ pose, but with a gentle tweak, the fronts could be angled. The model can be built with its folding roof panels in the open or closed position (closed is handy if you don’t want to paint the interior or the figures) but the model will have more character when they are in the open position. One markingsoption is included in the kit, allowing the depiction of a vehicle on the Western
Front, painted overall in green with black ‘Mickey Mouse’ camouflage pattern. Fantastic!

T
he latest addition to Tamiya’s legendary 1:35 ‘Military Miniatures Series’ is a newly-designed kit of the German ‘Jagdpanzer IV Lang’ tank destroyer. The srcinal Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyer was based upon the Panzer IV tank and used extensive sloped armour plus the 48-calibre, 7.5cm gun that had already proven its worth on other vehicles. In January 1944, it was decided to upgrade the Jagdpanzer IV with the powerful 70-calibre 7.5cm anti-tank gun, replacing the srcinal 48-calibre weapon. This bigger gun was fitted to the Jagdpanzer IV with the intention of giving it the ability to destroy Allied tanks without even entering their weapons-range. It was also the srcin of the name ‘Lang’, which translates into English as ‘long’. The ‘V’ was applied to vehicles manufactured by the German company
VOMAG (Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik AG). A total of 930 Jagdpanzer IV /70(V) Lang vehicles were manufactured between August 1944 and March 1945, with German forces taking advantage of the exceptional range of the gun, employing it in both defensive and ambush roles even as their military situation worsened. With this December marking seventy years since the Battle of the Bulge – effectively the final German offensive of WWII – this model is timed perfectly to add to a WW2 armour model collection. The new kit captures the low-slung, fully-enclosed form of the vehicle with its wedge-shaped hull front armour. It depicts a vehicle manufactured after September 1944, when the use of ‘zimmerit’ anti-magnetic mine coating was discontinued. The 70-calibre 7.5cm gun
main barrel is moulded in a single piece. Two partial-figures are included for use in the fighting compartment hatches and three markings-options are provided to depict Western Front (including Battle of the Bulge) and Eastern Front vehicles. Other features of the kit include realistic depictions of surface textures such as cast-steel mantlet plus welded sections and the pair of steel-tyred wheels roadwheels on the first two axles. A metal gun barrel (12660) has been designed for this kit and it will go on sale simultaneously with the model.
Rear deck carries spare wheels, pioneer tools and gun barrel cleaning rods.
The first two roadwheels on each side are steel-rimmed as per the real ‘Lang’.

This truly oddlooking aircraft is shown in all its glory and whetting the appetite for the following material, which covers the cockpit interior (shown using srcinal wartime technical manual illustrations, captioned) which are very helpful for superdetailing a model. Further detail views show the greenhouse-like cockpit enclosure, undercarriage, airframe and many other structural and technical aspects of the aircraft. Specific details covered include the bomb release system, bomb racks, reconnaissance camera, in-built machine guns, engine cabling, cabin ammunition racks, MG mounts and more. To follow this, we have a section of colour five-view illustrations showing camouflage and markings schemes. Finally, we have a modelling section by Steve A Evans, depicting his exquisitely well built and painted Hobbyboss kit which is finished in an overall grey scheme. ast month we began our look at this diminutive model, taking you step by step through its construction. Unashamedly aimed at beginners, we hope that you enjoyed the first part of out feature and found the ideas This time around I will useful. guide you through the painting of the model and more pertinently, the decalling of its finish. Once again, these ideas are for the less advanced modellers who may be unsure of how best to complete this aspect of a kit build. The tools and techniques are easy to buy and implement and hopefully, the steps, straightforward to follow. Before beginning, perhaps it is worth discussing our approach to the builds in this magazine a little, especially when it comes to the time spent at the bench. Though we all have our own little foibles, one of the things that I stress more than any other, is the need to keep your bench neat and tidy and everything in order. Though this sounds like I’m preaching, when you are trying to finish a model well, there is nothing more likely to hinder that progress than missing parts, debris and spilled liquids. Just image getting a model almost to the point of completion and then knocking glue over it! So please, tidy up and put everything away after each step! The second tip that is well-worth bearing in mind is to buy the best tools and materials that you can afford. Cost-cutting rarely saves money in the long term the need to replace poorly made, broken tools, more than offsetting any initial savings. The same goes for materials used to build your models. It may seem great to buy superglue in packs of ten for £1, but they often have limited shelf life or adhesive power. Similarly, oil paints can be bought in both student and artist’s grades. Buy those designed for artists. Sure, they are a little more expensive, but they will last twice as long and produce far better results. I could go on, but you get the picture! This then is the concluding part of our look at Trumpeter’s A-37A Dragonfly. We hope you like it!

The cockpit was sprayed in Neutral Grey and then masked with Tamiya masking tape and packing sponge. The opening is large enough to allow the cockpit to be painted in situ, the instrument panel, coaming and seats being fixed in place once all painting, decalling and weathering had been completed. With the model primed and checked for any flaws, it was given several thin coats of Tamiya’s Fine Surface Primer and then oversprayed with Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey before being left to dry. Happy that the finish was smooth, the Sky grey was lightened with white to create some areas of fading and then darkened with German Grey to add some delicate shadows and streaking – the latter helping to create an initial indication of weathering.
The upper surfaces and their camouflaged finish, were painted with Gunze Sanyo acrylics, H303 FS34102 Medium Green, H309 FS34079 Dark Green and H310 FS30219 Dark Tan. All three colours were thinned 50/50 with Mr Color Leveling Thinner and sprayed on with an Iwata HP-CH airbrush set at 25psi. The result was a smooth finish with tight demarcations between the three individual colours. Happy that the finish was dry, it was oversprayed with three thin layers of Tamiya X-22 Clear, once again thinned with Mr Color Leveling Thinner, before being left to dry overnight.
The undersides were similarly glossed ready for detail painting and decals.

For a small model, there is no getting way from the fact that there is a lot of masking to do! Along with the intakes, there are various lumps and pumps, jet pipes, areas of metal, undercarriage bays and other smaller features to define. This little lot took almost two hours to complete – not fun, but absolutely essential.
A. Having waited for the clear coat to dry completely (the longer the better), the model was ready for decalling. Unlike a number of other kits that we have

completed recently, this one needs only a few decals to complete its finish and is thus perfect for a small ‘step by step’. Here you can see the tools of the trade, as well as the neat and tidy workspace that is essential for this step in this model’s completion. B.
Time to begin applying the decals! Each design is carefully cut away from the main sheet. Though many use scissors to do this, I find it easier to remove them using a new, No.10 Swann-Morton scalpel blade. C.

Before applying the decal to the fin, the surface was coated with a wetting agent that helps break the surface tension of the water used to soak the decal, thus allowing it to flow into place more easily. Though there are many types out there, in this case we used Gunze Sanyo Mr Mark Setter, the solution being applied with a soft paintbrush. F. The decal could now be applied to the model, the lettering being separated from the backing sheet and then lifted, using once again a soft paintbrush to ensure no damage to the delicate design. G. Once in place, any excess water and air trapped under the decal is carefully forced away using the same brush used to apply the decal to the model. H. Though the decal looked fine at this point, the fact that it flowed over a panel line or two was cause for concern, so a setting solution was used to soften the decal and help it conform to those delicate details. In this case, I used my favourite product, Daco’s ‘Strong’ solution, which I find works perfectly with all manner of decals. A small drop of the solution is dropped onto the decal and then left to dry out. You’ll notice the decal wrinkle a little.

Though I like to use the kit decals where possible, sometimes the colours, designs or accuracy are off, so need to be replaced. In this case the national insignia were completely the wrong colour, so were replaced with i tems from the ‘spares’ box. Here, you can see the difference, those on the left being the kit’s national insignia. J. Here you can see the completely painted, decalled and weathered tail. By following the steps in this feature, you can see how the marking really look to be painted on, with no evidence of silvering underneath each image. An overspray with Vallejo Flat Varnish helps to blend everything together and produce a nice, warm finish. Note also in this shot the delicate aerials; these were made from Albion Alloys 0.3 mm steel wire, threaded through pre-drilled holes and then painted black.

Last month we discussed the thickness of the canopies and how to make them appear visually more pleasing. Here, you can see the results: not perfect, but with a little fettling and sanding of their edges and some careful painting, the canopies don’t look too bad. The seats are also in place, built from the box, with the kit-supplied straps in place. Detail here is moderate, the straps in particular being rather bland – still, they are better than nothing! Note the delicate chipping around the cockpit sills and the rather impressive etched brass airbrake hanging below the intake.

We mentioned earlier that this model requires plenty of masking to help paint its smaller features, well, here are the results of some of that work! The tiny jet pipes are particularly noteworthy. These were painted with Alclad II Steel and then carefully drybrushed with Games Workshop Mithryl Silver to accentuate the edges of the pipes and their distinctive thrust deflectors. Note the delicate aerial on the spine of the aircraft.
For a small aircraft model, this one packs a stack of detail and character. Having completed this one, I would certainly entertain the idea of building another and look forward to seeing the A-37B that will no doubt follow this release. I can’t wait!

ot all airbrushes are created equal. There are many on the market from very basic models upwards but Iwata's Custom Micron line stands as the gold standard. includes a moisture filter, which screws directly to the air inlet. This forms a pistol grip when in place, which increases spraying comfort. Also in the case is a spray tip spanner and a tube of Iwata's own 'Superlube' airbrush lubricant for the needle-chuck and other components. In the hand, the CM-B feels perfectly balanced; it's light, but not so light that there’s no ‘feel’. The new height trigger feels perfect under one's fingertip and the symmetrical design is

here hasn’t been a lot of publicity surrounding the launch of this new-tool kit, but it’s a significant release of an important tank of the Cold War period. The model depicts the German army’s version of the US M48 MBT which used a 90mm main gun. The commander’s cupola was replaced with a Leopard-style hatch and myriad other changes were made for the Bundeswehr’s use. The tank entered service in 1978 and was retired in 1991 following the re-unification of Germany. Revell’s new kit comes moulded in the usual dark green and the mouldings display a good level of detail.
The cast texture on the turret and cast steel portions of the upper deck is quite prominent but will tone down under a layer of paint and weathering. Tracks are provided in the form of one-piece ‘rubber band’ items and are very well done; quite adequate and needing no ‘sag’ on the upper runs.

he P-47 is, of course, one of the most famous fighters of the Second World War and there have been many kits released of the type over the years in all of the main aircraft modelling scales. This photo shows USAAF ground crew at an Allied airfield in Normandy, re-loading the Browning wing guns (three in each wing, in staggered positions) with long belts of .50cal ammunition. Naturally, we think Tamiya’s 1:48 P-47 kits are the best out there, but of course you can make your own choice!

HOW TO BUILD... REVELL 1:32 SPITFIRE MK.IIA The name Spitfire has now becomesynonymous with an entire island people, and their battle to maintain their freedom in the shadow of the Nazi jackboot. The very shape and sound of the Spitfire seems to still invoke and embody the usually reserved pride of the British person. It is probably true to say that Reginald Mitchell’s beautiful aircraft design is one of the most easily recognised and much-loved shapes that ever took to theskies. Well, this issue seems to have become the ‘Telford 2014’ edition, with a show report and ‘New Releases’ kits being turned over to the new kit announcements! So, in that spirit, I’d like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone who was able come to visit us at the show, it was great to see you. It was yet another successful event for Tamiya Model Magazine with lots of interest in our forthcoming issues. We got to see hundreds of superb models in the competition plus new kits large and small – from the extraordinary 1:32 Lancaster from HK Models on Pocketbond’s stand, to the plethora of wonderful accessories and the materials on sale throughout trading areas. We even had a visitor from the Dark Side on our stand! Thanks again folks, see you again next year – same place, on the weekend of 7th and 8th November.
