Engineering Data Friction Loss For Water At 60° F Per 100 Feet Of Pipe New Schedule 40 Steel Pipe - The friction values are from the Hydraulic Institute Pipe Friction Manual. (Copyright 1961). No allowance has been made for age, differences in any abnormal conditions of interior surface. Any factor of safety must be estimated from the conditions and the requirements of each installation. For average new installations it is suggested that at least 15% be added to these friction loss values as a reasonable factor of safety. 15 Year Old Pipe - The friction values for Old Pipe are based on Williams and Hazen coef ficient of C=100. Values for 3 inch and larger sizes are for cast iron pipe; smaller sizes refer to steel pipe. For existing older type installations, these higher values are generally used for estimating friction losses. Sewage Lines - To keep raw sewage in suspension in force mains, velocities above 2½ feet per second are generally recommended.
