REDWOOD VISCOMETER Aim:-
Study of Viscosity of given oil with Red wood viscometer. Objective:-
To determine kinematic viscosity of given oil and study the variation of Vi scosity with temperature. Theory:-
Redwood viscometer is based on the principle of laminar flow under a falling head. It consists of a vertical cylinder of specific size having orifice of designed diameter in its base. The diameter of the orifice is so small that the flow through it is laminar. The cylinder is to be filled upto a specific level with liquid of which the viscosity is to be determined and the time of emptying the cylinder for a given specific volume is to be noted. Viscosity of that liquid can be determined from that time. Kinematic viscosity of given liquid can be determined with the help of red wood viscometer by the formula.
Where, t = time in second required to collect a volume of 50ml of liquid in a measuring flask Kinematic viscosity in stokes. Experimental Equipments:-
1. Redwood viscometer with accessories like – flask, ball valve etc. 2. Centigrade thermometer. 3. Stop watch. Experimental Procedure:-
1. At initial stage leveling the viscometer with the help of leveling screws. 2. Fill the water bath with water. 3. Close the orifice by means of the ball valve and pour the oil in the cylinder of whose viscosity is to be measured upto the index mark. 4. Record the temperature of oil. 5. At required specific temperature lift the ball valve and allow the oil to pass through the orifice. 6. Collect the oil in a beaker upto 50ml and record the time taken by oil to fill 50 ml volume in beaker. 7. Repeat the above procedures for different temperatures by heating the water bath and oil.
