Story Telling Reflection sintujas

Last 28th September is still vivid and fresh in my memory. That day was a remarkable shift in my life. I carried out my story telling session as a part of our  Teaching Listening and Speaking Coursework (TSL 3105). The story telling was full of  fun and frolic. It served me with a wonderful experience of teaching in real classroom which I was anticipating for a long time. A shift from student’s desk to teacher’s table was something that I was anticipating since my foundation. Even though the shift was temporary but I earned manifold values, skills and knowledge. This served me with a golden opportunity to learn more and I believe learning is an infinity process. I believe teaching is not just about delivering content but how interesting u could make the lesson. The day kicked off with havoc and the room was filled with apprehension. I could feel the pressure on my nerves when I have to do it all alone as I missed the opportunity with my friends the other day. I supposed to perform in front of  my classmates only but the enthusiasm in me doesn’t just stop me there. I wanted to face the reality. So, I went to teaching school to do my story telling. I was very fortunate enough as there was a Civic teacher who allowed me to do the story telling in her class. I am very lucky and thankful to her. My experience in microteaching taught me to stand upon my own legs. I learned to handle the activities and the overall class without my friends’ help. I had prepared puppets to make the story telling more captivating. I kicked off  with the story titled “Busy busy Mouse’’. I was little nervous at first about the class control yet as time flies it came together at a place. I believe I was confident enough as I did practice few times before the big day. This story telling session debunked the secret recipe for a perfect classroom management. I learnt that in the future I can integrate story telling in my classroom or in fact I can deliver content through story itself to make

lessons interesting. The basic ingredients for story telling are the arts and crafts for  story telling. I happy that now I well grasp those secrets which we had learned earlier in our workshop with Madam Ruth and Madam Zaliha. I did manage to apply the skills I learned. During the story telling I made lots of gestures and facial expressions. I get to know that teachers should never be shy. Well my plus point could be my voice modulation. I did mimicry too for different characters and pupils looked entertained with that. The songs that I integrate in my story were a tool to encourage pupils’ participation like singing and clapping hands. The shortcoming and advantages are often tied together. Here I earned manifold of skills throughout this story telling. I learned about the correct pacing during story telling. Voice projection is very important and this is my area of defect . I also learned that how important is eye contact. I realized that during the story telling I was just focusing on a particular group of pupils. I hope that in the future I could change that. Since I was a bit nervous at the beginning I forgot my script. It made me to look at my story script constantly which is a bit distracting.

I firmly believe that this reflection is not just to fulfill the coursework but this is something really meaningful for me as it is a tool to express myself and my soundness mind with a mountain of hope for a better progress in the future. I take positively all the comments and suggestions from my lecturer and my peers for my personal and professional development in my teaching career .The compliments will be source of  motivation for me to keep going and indirectly increase my zest in teaching. The wholesome story telling session planted a strong desire in me to be an educator rather  than a usual teacher. I want to be a teacher of gusto. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my lecturer Madam Zaliha who

had spent countless time and her energy

despite her busy schedule to guide me till I accomplish this task successfully. I faced loads of hardship but I’m proud because I managed to give a good and successful finishing touch. I am really looking forward for more exciting tasks in the future in order  to start of something new in the teaching path.
