York House Basketball Playbook Spider Motion “Wing” Option Any time we enter the ball to the wing, we want to try to penetrate with either the dribble or the pass. • On the pass to 2, 5 immediately establishes post position. • 4 waits to see where the post defender is playing, then fills. Weʼre looking for triangle options for the post. On the reversal, we move right into our “Guard” options.
“Black” If the pass to 4 is denied, then we dribble her backdoor. • If 4 does not get the ball on the back cut, then she immediately tries to get post position. • 2 can pass to either 5 filling behind, or the cutting 3 (depends on where 4s defender is).

Establishing post position. • Once 2 passes the ball, 4 establish post position on that side. If she reverses the ball to 5, then we’re regular. If she passes to 3, then she holds her position
Guard Option On the pass to the guard spot (away from the post). • 1 cuts hard looking for the pass (or the post up... “swing”) • After 1 cuts, 5 flashes to the highpost area. • 4 makes a bounce to 5. From here we have two options: 1. Over 2. Away Guard Option - Over After passing the ball to the post: • 1 clears out (and 3 fills up) • 4 cuts off of 5, looking for the handoff. If 5 doesn’t hand the ball to 4: • 4 sets a down screen for 2 in the corner. From here 2 can either reject the screen or accept it.

Guard Over - cont. If 2 accepts the screen: • 5 quickly checks to see if 4 is open on the flash. • If not, then she takes one hard dribble towards the wing, to hand the ball off to 2. • 2 takes the handoff and attacks middle. • After the handoff, 5 opens to the hoop. • On the dribble middle, 3 looks to cut backdoor on the weak side.
Guard Over - cont. If 2 doesn’t attack or make a pass to one of the cutters: • 2 continues to the opposite guard spot. • 3 sets a cross screen for 5, and 1 blast cuts up the wing. *After setting the cross screen, 3 cuts to the top of the key (to reset the offense).
Guard Over - cont. If 2 rejects the screen: • 5 tries to hit 2 on the backcut. • 4 pops back out to the wing, to receive a pass from 5. • 3 and 1 fill up.

Guard Over - cont. Sideline Screen/Pop (same rules for dribble handoff). • 4 attacks the middle of the floor. • 5 pops (this is important, because our post will usually roll). • As 4 clears the screen, 3 cuts backdoor (and becomes our new post) • 2 clears out and 1 fills up. Guard Over - cont. If 4 popping out is denied: • 5 take a hard dribble towards 4s check, which signals 4 to cut backdoor (or come for the handoff, depending on the defense).
Guard Option - Away On the bounce pass to 5: • 4 screens away for 3. • 3 rejects the screen (although we’ll sometimes take the screen) • 5 looks to make a bounce pass to the back cutting 3. • 4 pops back out for the return pass.

Guard Away - cont. - Middle Screen After passing the ball back to 4, 5 follows her pass and sets a ball screen. On this screen: • 3 continues through the key and off the down screen set by 2. • 5 rolls straight down the lane, to the weak side of the hoop (maybe looking for a skip post option) • 2 sets the screen then releases to the corner. Guard Away - cont. - Rip and Go Although the screen/roll is a great option, there are times when the defense will dictate that, on the catch, the 4 attacks the basket immediately.
Different Entries into “Guard” Options Because this option is our primary look, we have to find a number of ways to make this entry. We also might do this to involve our primary ball handler in the screening action in an effort to get them open (set a screen to get yourself open). Exchange On the call (by the point guard): • 4 down screens for the post • 5 uses the screen to get open at the opposite high post area.

“Away” or “Out” The post clears early (either because there is no opening or she’s been told to) and calls “Out” or “Away.” • 4 makes a diagonal cut • 5 fills in behind her.
“Dribble @” or “1 - 4” • 1 dribbles at 4, waving her through. • 5 flashes high.
“Handoff” This option should either be run out of a timeout, or be called by the point guard. • 1 passes to 4, then follows her pass to get a handoff. • 5 flashes highpost here. • On the handoff, 2 cuts off 5 to the hoop.

“Handoff” Pt. 2 • After 2 clears the highpost area, 5 positions herself to set a back screen for 4. • 4 cuts off the back screen for the alley oop pass from 1.
“Handoff” Pt. 3 If 4 does not receive the pass from 1: • 4 pops out to the corner. • 5 opens for the ball. • 1 passes to 5, then begins our “Guard” movement.
“Swing/Post” There will be times when we want to post up our primary ball handler (or player initiating our offense). On the pass to the guard, the cutter calls for the ball to be swung to the wing. • 5 still flashes to the high post.

Swing/Post cont. On the pass to 3: • 1 posts up. • 4 cuts off the backscreen set by 5. • 2 fills the weakside wing
Swing/Post - cont. into “Guard” option If the ball isn’t passed to 1 or 4: • 3 dribbles out to the guard spot. • 2 fills the weakside guard spot, then back cuts to the other side.
If 3 passes to 5, we’re into guard option.

York House Basketball Playbook Spider Entries ! In an effort to keep the defense off balance, we have a number of ways to disguise our base movement. The following diagrams are different ways for us to initiate our offense. It’s important, as we move forward in the season, that everybody understand exactly what we’re doing so that we don’t end up being the confused team. ! Push – Our regular dribble exchange is an easy way to initiate offense, but when the defense attempts to deny the dribble handoff, we run PUSH. As 1 dribbles towards 2’s check, 2 cuts backdoor off the screens set by 5 and 4 (it’s important for 4 to recognize whether 1 accepts the handoff or cuts backdoor). If 1 can’t make an easy post entry pass to 5, she hits 2 coming off the second screen (might have to take a dribble towards her). 4 clears to the corner and 3 fills up. We are now ready to run our offense.
Once 2 catches the ball, 5 flashes to the highpost area and 1 buries herself in the corner. We wait to see which option 2 will run.
Corner – On the pass to the wing, the point guard makes a shallow cut directly to the corner (2 might have to slide dribble to give her space). * We could run a weakside exchange, but I haven’t drawn it here.
The post flashes straight up the lane to receive the pass at the junction. We are automatically running “Away” if we make this entry.
After this post entry, 2 cuts off the post looking for the handoff. If we don’t give her the ball, she continues through and sets the screen for 4. From here we would go into our regular “Away” movement. * We could have 4 cut off the screen set by 2 and run “Over” but that we’ll look at that later. “Away” Once 2 pops backup, we run our regular away movement.
“Cross” – Here we make the wing pass, then (rather than cut to the corner) our 1 cuts to the weakside. On this cut, 4 could simply fill, with 3 following her (which should happen if we’re in transition).
Dribble middle – Once 2 sees 1 cut away, she immediately dribbles to the strongside guard spot. On this action, 4 cuts diagonally into the opposite corner and 3 fills behind her. 2 passes the ball to 3 and WE BEGIN OUR SPIDER MOVEMENT!
