Self-healing : The man behind this wellness system &t the end of this article" you will be shown / outube presentation. They They are taken in three parts of about 01 minutes each" for easy $iewing. 2efore you proceed to $iew them" please let me introduce the man behind this self-healing posture. The person responsible for this set of self-healing techniques is a 3hinese from 3hina by the name of Hongchi 4iao. #n fact the correct placement of his name should be 4iao Hongchi. ou see" 3hinese names ha$e the surname in front. So he is r. 4iao" or more rightly aster 4iao. aster 4iao is a $ery $ersatile and brilliant person. He also speaks flawless )nglish. That makes him more uni$ersal. ,ith the two widely-spoken languages" andarin 3hinese and )nglish" one can consider oneself a uni$ersal person as one can tra$el the world without much communication problem. aster 4iao has written se$eral best-selling books in Taiwan. The latest book is about this sub%ect of wellness incorporating topics on 3hinese medicine" 3onfucianism" Ta Taoism" oism" and 2uddhism. He has been repeatedly in$ited to demonstrate his wellness techniques on 3hinese tele$ision in both 3hina and Taiwan. aster 4iao+s philosophy is that we don+t ha$e to wait for someone to heal us. ,e must take full control of our health and li$e in harmonious relationship with nature. The Ta Tao o way. The natural way in which one ad%usts one+s body to match with nature+s way. #n this manner" each of us will be our own doctor. aster 4iao was once a successful financier in ,all Street and Hong 5ong for more than a decade. 'ollowing the ad$ice of a 2uddhist monk " he embarked on an ad$enturous %ourney across 3hina to learn ancient techniques of healing. aster 4iao has mastered the art of self-healing and other ancient 3hinese healing systems which include acupuncture" acupressure" point therapy" orthopaedics and mo6ibustion.
Self-healing : The Tao of life “Tao” “Ta o” can be loosely translated as “The ,ay”. The ,& of nature. 7ur physical bodies are made from nature. ,hen we die we go back to nature as bones and dust. # f we don+t follow nature+s way" our physical bodies are going against nature which they depend on to sur$i$e. The ultimate result is ha$ing health problems. Tao+s Tao+s principle of in and ang ang is based on this nature+s way. in in is the “softer” side of nature" or we can refer it as ha$ing “female” attributes. ang is the “harder” side of nature" or we can refer it as ha$ing “male” attributes. &t first glance" they seem to be opposing attributes. 2ut if you consider further" when both are in harmony or are balanced" the condition is perfect. Take for e6ample" cold and hot water. 3old water is in" and hot water is ang. Too Too much cold in will free8e us to death. Too Too much hot ang will scald us to death t oo. 2ut if
we balance the two" t hen we feel comfortable and li$e on. The principle of in ang is like this. “Tao”" is the principle of “The Harmony 7f The 7pposites”. & $ery good e6ample is the tree. The tree takes nourishment both from the ground 9in: and from the atmosphere 9ang:. Too much water or t oo much sunlight will e$entually k ill the tree. ,ith proper balance of in and ang" the tree grows and bears fruits. ,e humans are %ust like any other thing that comes f rom nature. ou go against nature+s way" you suffer. So we need to li$e a balanced life-style in accordance with nature+s way;The Tao. Take a look at the life-style of birds" for e6ample. ,hen dawn breaks" they wake up and start flying off to begin their acti$ities. ,hen dusk approaches" they return to their roosting place and rest for the night. This is the life-style set by nature for them. They li$e in accordance with nature+s principles. ,e" foolish humans are the only species that goes against !ature* ,e should also follow the rules set for us by nature in order to li$e a long and healthy life.
Self-healing : La-jin Therapy aster 4iao asserted that in order for a technique to be useful" it must ha$e fi$e criteria< 0. ust be effecti$e. =. ust be simple and easy to learn. /. ust be safe. >. ust be able to cure many ailments. ?. @# < ust be able to do it yourself. &nd may # add a si6th criterion < 2etter still if it is FREE* The first technique is called the “Aa-%in” posture. #n 3hinese" “Aa” means “stretch” and “%in” means ligaments and tendons. So Aa-%in means stretching the ligaments and tendons. #n 3hinese medical te6t" there is a main strip of “%in” running from the top of the neck down from the back to the waist" the thighs" the cal$es" the heels and ends at the center of the soles. ,hen the ligaments or tendons are not functioning properly" they will affect many parts of the body" creating pain and inhibiting mo$ements. This ailment is called “Bin suo” in 3hinese" meaning" contraction" atrophy" or degeneration of the functions of “Bin” or the ligaments and t endons. The symptoms of Bin Suo are as follows< •
!eck stiffness and pain
•
Aumbar stiffness and pain
•
#nability to bend down
•
2ack stiffness and pain
•
Aeg pain and paralysis
•
#nability to squat down
•
Une$en length of the legs
•
(adiating pain in the heels
•
Short walking steps
•
Stressed ligament at the hip %oint
•
#nability to raise the thighs forward or sideways
•
@ifficulty in turning around
•
3ontraction or atrophy of Aa-Bins
•
#nability to e6tend or bend the elbow
•
@istention" numbness" pain or infle6ibility in the arm" leg" elbow and knee
Self-healing : ow La-jin wor!s Aa-%in relie$es body pain" e6pels to6in" and e$en enhances se6ual ability. &mongst other benefits" la-%in therapy may relie$e or e$en cure problems in the urinary system and reproducti$e system stomach problem gastroenteritis numbness" pain and swelling in the hands and feet cardio$ascular and cerebro$ascular problems li$ er and gal bladder problems dermatitis and diabetes. #n simple language" there are meridians along the Bin route. &ny dysfunction of the meridians will also affect the functioning of the Bin and will cause body pain. Aa-%in will restore the tenderness of Bin and reposition the affected spots so that the framework of the body is corrected and the $itality flows smoothly and healthily. Cain and discomfort in the body will gradually diminish. Aa-%in will also strengthen the kidneys and the bladder. & strong pair of kidneys will enhance human energy and se6ual ability. #magine that this body is connected throughout by a fle6ible hose enabling circulation of chi or inner energy. #f you ha$e difficulty understanding this “3hi”" then imagine blood circulating through the $eins and arteries. This fle6ible hose may be blocked for two reasons one" the hose is twisted or bent and two" sediments ha$e accumulated in the passage. ,hat will happenD There is restriction to the flow of 3hi" and e$ery part of the body is affected" and in time the system gets stuck. This is what happened to most people who suffer body and %oint pains. The remedy is to straighten the hose" and also to clear the sediments stuck inside the hose. Aa-%in is to straighten the hose" and Cai-da 9patting and slapping" as will be e6plained below: is to clear the sediments. 7nce the Bin is straightened and unblocked" the flow of 3hi runs smoothly" and the whole body system will be in harmony with in and ang. The body will be re%uni$ated and the immune system st rengthened. &ny $irus or negati$e impediments will immediately be flushed out" %ust like a $ery swift stream flowing through where all impurities and debris will be flushed out through the ri$er-mouth into the $ast ocean. The body will be maintained in perfect health.
La-jin posture "# : Lying down
Self-healing : Learning La-jin posture "# in # minute 7ne Taoist a6iom assures < “the e6tension of one inch in Bin results in the e6tension of ten years in life”. #n fact it is obser$ed that a person who li$e a long life always displays a fle6ible body. #t is therefore pertinent that one must practice la-%in posture at least once a day to maintain one+s healthy posture. Aa-%in posture is so easy that it only takes 0 minute to learn. #t is that simple that # need not ha$e to describe in words" the Aa-%in posture. Bust take a look at the pictures on the right and the one at the top right. See it+s so easy that you don+t need any description* ou can do it lying down" literally*
There is a special Aa-%in bench but # don+t think you can get it in t he ,est. ou can impro$ise by placing = or / chairs together as you can see from the third outube $ideo 9E 1<0?: at the end of t his article and also the two photos below on the right" showing me doing la%in. Bust to assure you on two points. ost people will not be able to raise the leg to a F1 -degree angle initially" without assistance. So for a start" %ust lift you leg to the best possible angle e$en >? degrees will do. #n due course with constant practice you will be able to do so in “perfection”* &lso your arms may not be able to fully stretch to the back. #t+s ok. Bust stretch the best you can. #n time" you will be an e6pert as you regain your perfect health which you are entitled to" in the first place. The second point is t hat different people will e6perience different le$els of pain depending on the conditions of the ligaments and tendons. The ad$ice is to start off gradually. Stretch to the limit that you can perse$ere and for the duration that you feel comfortable with. 'or a start" ? minutes will be an achie$ement. #deally" it should be at least 01 minutes for each leg.

$e doing posture "(
$y personal testimony : La-jin posture "# This is my personal t estimony. 7f late" my health has not been up to mark. # felt lethargic and was always sleepy" despite following my daily wellness regime. Then # tried the Aa-%in posture G0 for ? minutes each leg. &fter only two sessions" # could feel the $ast difference in my physical condition. !o more tiredness and sleepiness* # used to ha$e black-out spell when # got up after bending down. !ow its gone. This is fantastic* #n my years of practising the $arious types of qigong" ne$er had # e6perienced such immediate and effecti$e results. This is great* # strongly recommend that yo u try this fantastic self-healing Aa-%in posture. (emember" its free. ou only need two chairs for support. #nitially" # used three chairs" which was more comfortable for my arms. !ow # only use two chairs as suggested and this way # c ould feel the stretch on my diaphragm" chest and shoulder %oints as well. ou may also feel Ipins and needlesI or tingling sensation on both your palms and the fingers during the stretch" which should subside after a few practice sessions. This sensation is an indication that the qi 9chi: is mo$ing and circulating. ,hen # first started" # could only raise my leg to about >? degrees but after a few days # was able to touch my calf against the wall. !ow my whole leg and buttock are able to rest against the wall. 2elie$e me" when you can rest at least your calf against the wall" you will feel more rela6ed and more comfortable. 'rom then on" its smooth ride all the way" and you can easily e6tend the duration while you close your eyes and rela6* !ow # stay for 01 minutes each side. @ont worry about the position of the other leg. Bust let it dangle down naturally. #f you ha$e fle6ible %oints then the foot will touch the floor. #f you are like me" the %oints a re not that fle6ible" and the leg %ust dangles in t he air. Take a look at the first photo of me on the top right" doing the Aa%in. Juite comical" is nt itD y right t high was not able to bend lower. Clease remember" the mission is to do the
e6ercise for impro$ement of our health" within our own le$els and abilities. ,e are not competing in the 7lympics* Howe$er" after a few practices" the legs can become m ore fle6ible. Take a look at my second photo on the right. ,hen you are able to rela6 while doing the Aa%in stretch" you can try some deep breathing at the same time. Take a deep full breath" breathing in slowly from your nostrils. Aet the air intake fill the whole lungs and feel the stomach e6tending. Hold your breath for a few seconds" then breathe out slowly through your mouth. This is to e6ercise your lungs and stomach and at the same time you will feel your Aa%in position impro$ing as the pressure from your e6tended lungs and stomach push your buttocks forward. This breathing method is also a type of qigong breathing technique. The in-breath is supposed to draw in positi$e qi 9or positi$e fresh air: into the base of the body which is the center of gra$ity of the body. The e6act location is = inches below the na$el 9or / finger-widths below the na$el: and in 3hinese this location is called the lower I@antianIor simply I@antianI. This location is supposed to be the storehouse of IqiI or life energy. #t is so $ital that lower @antian is considered to be Ilike the root of the tree of lifeI. ,hen you breathe out through your mouth" imagine that you are e6pelling negati$e or IusedI qi" or to6ic air from your body. ,ith a complete cycle of breathing in and breathing out" you are replenishing positi$e life energy to your body" and e6pelling negati$e to6ic air 9negati$e qi: out from the body. 2efore # forget" # do this la%in stretch with my eyes closed" which enables me to really feel completely rela6ed. ,hile doing the breathing e6ercise" # also practise $isuali8ation. Kisuali8ing the in-breath slowly filling up my lungs and strengthening my stomach and abdomen. Then # $isuali8e the breath staying put for a few seconds" and slowly empties through the mouth. # also do two e6tended e6ercises after the 01-minute stretch. ,ith both hands pressed on the thigh of the raised leg" # do the IcyclingI e6ercise on the other leg. &fter that" another e6ercise" with both hands holding the thigh of the IfreeI leg" # stretch it sideways. This is an update< 'rom my consistent Aa%in practice" # found that one of the most effecti$e results is the strengthening and maintaining the straight posture of my spine.

Self-healing < Cai-da therapy
!ow we come to the second part of self-healing t herapy. ou can watch the demonstration at the end of the third outube $ideo. #n 3hinese it is called “Cai-da” therapy. “Cai” means patting" and “@a” means “slapping”. ' or those not used to Hanyu Cinyin pronunciation “@a” should be pronounced as “Ta” 9without aspiration:. Bust like “@ao” is pronounced as “Tao”. This system of patting and slapping is quite common in qigong practice. #t is done usually after the end of the qigong session. ou can see this practice in the last $ ideo of my other article titled “(ela6ing-qigong”. #t is belie$ed that patting and slapping the skin and the %oints will acti$ate the flow of “3hi” or “inner energy” that gi$es life and $itality to the body. This technique draws out the bad “chi” 9in 3hi: and in$igorates the body with the positi$e “chi” 9ang chi:" and stimulates the meridians with the powerful flow of positi$e 3hi" thereby energi8ing the body with $it ality. The sequence of Cai-da is from top down. Lenerally starting from the top and back of the head" down the chest" shoulders" arms" waist" thighs and the legs. &long the way" all the %oints are slapped as hard as possible. <hough it is patting and slapping" # also do circular rubbing massage especially on the knees and around the stomach and lower abdomen. ¬her complementary massage is doing light rubbing by sliding the palms down the body following the same sequence as Cai-da" from the top of the head 9including the face and ears: down to the ankles. This concludes the self-healing system as taught by aster 4iao. #f you are interested" i also ha$e my own $ersion of simple massages <
'requency of practice &s for how often we need to practise this therapy" aster 4iao has this to say" I#f you want more health benefits" practise more often" #f you want less health benefits" practise less often" #f you dont want any health benefit" then dont do it.I
