About the Instructor

Rusty Cooley

Rusty Cooley is at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of modern guitar playing. A world renown musician and instructor who has influenced some of today’s most respected guitarist such as Mark Tremonti of Creed and John Petrucci of Dreamtheater – he has performed on more than 15 albums and has seven different instructional products to his credit. His two new products Fretboard Autopsy Level 1 and Fretboard Autopsy Level 2 from Rock House have been his most well received and critically acclaimed instructional products to date. Rusty has been featured in magazines such as Guitar Player, Guitar One, Guitar World, Guitar Techniques and Axe. Tablature Explanation Tablature (or tab) is a number system for reading notes on the neck of a guitar. It does not require you to have knowledge of standard music notation. This system was designed specifically for the guitar. Most music for guitar is available in tab. Tablature is a crucial and essential part of your guitar playing career. The six lines of the tablature staff represent each of the six strings. The top line is the thinnest (highest pitched) string. The bottom line is the thickest (lowest pitched) string. The lines in between are the 2nd through 5th strings. The numbers placed directly on these lines show you the fret number to play the note. At the bottom, underneath the staff, is a series of numbers. These numbers show you which left hand fingers you should use to fret the notes. first string (thinnest)

Chords can also be written in tab. If there are several numbers stacked together in a column, those notes should be played or strummed at the same time. Here are the Am and Em chords with the tablature written out underneath each diagram. Since the fingerings are shown on the chord diagrams, we won’t bother to repeat them underneath the tab.

Preface By Rusty Cooley Alright, before we get started in the actual program, I would like to take a few minutes to talk about fretboard visualization. When you look at this diagram, you’re going to notice that it’s the open strings to the 24th fret and it’s showing you every location of notes in the key of G major:

When you first look at this, it can be very overwhelming, because you look at it and you think, “Wow, how am I ever going to learn that?” Well you can learn it, and there’s a method, and that’s what I’m going to be showing you today. I’m going to be taking you step by step through all the patterns and positions that I’ve used through the years to help me open up to fretboard visualization. Now, what you’re going to eventually be able to do when you practice this stuff is look down at your guitar neck and be able to see all the notes light up in your mind’s eye like tiny little LED’s. That’s pretty much your road map to freedom as an improviser, and as a rhythm player or whatever. When you see the neck as a whole, you not only see the notes for soloing and improvising, you see the notes for your arpeggios, you see the notes for your chords, you really see everything. So it’s very important to really take every example throughout the program and always compare it back to this diagram, this is where everything comes back together. It’s kind of like when you open a box to a puzzle and you look at the picture, and then you look at all the puzzle pieces in the box you wonder “Well how am I ever going to make that look like this?” Well, this is it. This is the method to the madness. You start, work through the program one lesson at a time, and slowly but surely, everything is going to open up to you, and before you know it, you’re going to be playing all the way up and down the neck effortlessly. 6 String Root Modes In this first chapter, I will go through the seven natural modes beginning on the sixth string. Each of these patterns is based on a three note per string format. Make sure you have these patterns under your fingers before continuing on to the next chapters because many of the patterns we will cover in this program are based off of these seven shapes. Each time I give you a new set of modal patterns or shapes, keep in mind that the goal is to connect all of these scale patterns in your “minds-eye” so you can develop your Fretboard visualization.

12 Note Split Patterns All right, let’s take the elements we have learned and put them together to create some killer patterns. This first group is what I call the 12 note split patterns. At its core, it is 12 notes from two adjacent modes.

Challenge Your Creative Mind You can get even more out of practicing by analyzing and experimenting. Isolate your favorite riffs and sequences and transpose them to other keys. Try playing them at different speeds using different techniques. Hear how the notes interact with the chord progressions and apply these ideas to different situations. All of this will help you to build a well rounded improvisational vocabulary.

6 Tone Extended-Minus 4th 123567 In this lesson, I’m going to show you another several 6 tone modal shapes that originate from the 6 string root modes we learned in the first lesson; however, this time these patterns are going to omit the fourth degree of the scale.

9 Note Groups In this lesson I am going to show you four nine note one octave groups for each mode. Make sure you get these patterns under your fingers because we will be using these extensively combined with the six note groupings we learned earlier to come up with some melodically strong patterns and sequences.

9-9-6 Rusty alternates between a sequential pattern and a straight run through the 9-9-6 grouping throughout the seven examples. For continuity and ease of learning, the Ionian pattern is written in the straight 9-9-6 grouping and the rest of the examples are written in the sequential pattern.

Quick Tip!

Play Slowly At First When learning something new, don’t start out trying to play it as fast as possible. Take things slowly at first; play slow enough so you don’t keep making mistakes. Build your speed over time.

6-9-9 In this lesson, I will utilize the six note and nine note shapes again to make a 6-9-9 sequence. Make sure that you download the backing tracks from the Lesson Support site and apply the 6-9-9 patterns. Transpose the 6-9-9 pattern to all the different keys once you have a firm grasp of the key of “G”.

Single String Technique Here is technique that will help you develop your linear playing on the neck. Since there are six strings there will only be six patterns and I will not reference them by any modal names since they can be used for any of the seven modes of G major. You can easily patch them in anywhere in a lead because they don’t really have any tonal center.

Practicing efficiently will accelerate your progress. Set aside a certain amount of time for practicing and have a routine that reviews all of the techniques you know. Create your own exercises that target weaknesses in your playing. It’s important to experiment and get creative as well; try things fast or slow, light or hard, soft or loud.

Double String Technique This technique is much like the last one we just covered but here we will use two strings instead of one. This develops your vertical playing and your horizontal playing at the same time. Make sure you see each mode as you play this across the neck.
