done the readers a great service by providing the Arabic script whilst comparing dierent versions o a had it h, as it is a daunting task to ollow slight orthographical changes whilst reading the transliteration. The author o chapter 7 has a wonderul introduction to historiography in general in the introduction to his article. For this reviewer, the most original and interesting contribution in this book is chapter 2. Over the years, G.H.A. Juynboll had developed, expanded and polished Schacht’s common-link theory to the extent that, or him, it has become the only worthy methodology ( U sul al- H ad i th) or studying H ad i th. Juynboll used this methodology to study the six canonical H ad it h collections. However elaborate the theory is, in this chapter, Motzki proves that it nevertheless suers rom many methodological and epistemological faws. This is the most rigorous critique o Juynboll’s common-link theory and a must read or the serious students o H ad it h. Motzki shows that in order or the common-link theory to work, every strand o the chain o narrators or a particular had i th text needs to be scrutinised. Without doing so, the common-link theory will not yield accurate results. He proves that Juynboll’s over reliance on the chains o narrators ound in al-Mizz i’s (d. 742 /1341) Tuh fat al-Ashr a f (which is only restricted to collecting the chains o narrators ound You're Reading Preview in the six canonical collections and a ew aother books) is what led Juynboll to making erroneous conclusions such denying Unlock full accessas with a free trial.the historical existence o Na [, the client o Ibn [Umar (d. 117 /735). However, the problem that Muslims have with the orientalists in general is that some o them hold on to their methods religiously even when their approach has been proven to be wrong. Motzki has obviated all o Juynboll’s arguments and yet Juynboll makes no attempt to modiy his theory as can be seen in his latest work The Encyclopaedia of Canonical Collections.
