4. Necessary conditions for cold repairs
4. Requisitos para realizar una reparación en frío
4.1. Work place
4.1. Lugar de trabajo
In order to ensure the quality and durability of the repairs, a clean and well protected work place as well as the careful application of the repair products are essential. When fabric plies are exposed, and repair materials (with CN bonding layer) are handled, cleanliness is especially important.
It’s better to avoid dirt than to remove it!
4.2. Conveyor belt
4.2. Cinta transportadora
Reliable repairs can be carried out only on clean and dry conveyor belts. Therefore, clean the conveyor belt before repairing it. To this end, scrape off watersoluble contamination (e. g. salt, fertilizer) rinse with water, and dry the belt (e. g. with a REMA TIP TOP drying hood* or an air dryer*). Remove any oil and grease using REMA TIP TOP Cleaning Fluid. Tools: Use only technically correct and serviceable tools. All measuring instruments must be calibrated. Repair materials: The repair materials are suitable for standard conveyor belts. For information about how to repair other types of conveyor belts, contact your REMA TIP TOP agent. The repair materials must be stored in a dry, dark and cool place (max. 25 C) (DIN 7716), and be kept clear of substances containing oil and grease. Take account of the expiry date.

4.3. Ambient conditions
4.3. Condiciones ambientales
Humidity (such as condensation below dew point) must absolutely be avoided. If necessary, the materials must be brought to ambient temperature. Erect a tent to protect the working area from ambient influences (e.g. dust, rain, sunlight, cold, wind etc.). Safety precautions: Observe the safety instructions and danger signs on the tins and tubes!
*Note: Electric appliances must not be left unattended (fire risk!). They must be protected against humidity.

5. Consejos generales de aplicación
5.1. Preparation of rubber surfaces
5.1. Preparación de superficies de goma
Normally, the surfaces of the conveyor belts are not ready for bonding. Dust, dirt, grease, remainder of heat-resistant foil, mould release agents etc. may form anti-adhesive layers which will make it impossible to sufficiently cement the surface of the conveyor belt, or will reduce the adhesion of the bonded parts. Therefore, these undesirable substances must first be removed by washing, scraping off or degreasing. Then, the rubber surfaces are buffed. Thus, non-soluble contamination, oxidated materials and light stabilizers are removed. At the same time, the bonding surface is extended, and made ready for cementing. When buffing, treat the whole surface (no blanks), avoid the formation of blue discolourations or smearing spots (due to excessive heat build-up) in order to create a completely even buffing texture. After the preparation of the fabric steps in the repair area, intermediate rubber may be left on the fabric plies. The intermediate rubber must be slightly buffed, levelling all uneven areas. During this operation, avoid damaging the fabric. (Protect it with a thin metal plate, if necessary.) The adhesion is not proportional to the depth of the buffing texture. Therefore, do not make the surface too rough. The optimum buffing texture is achieved using a PVC-embedded wire brush (ref.no.595 4175), a coarse-grit fibre disk (ref.no.594 0290 K16 / ref. no. 594 0300 K 24) or a hard metal buffing disk (ref. no. 595 2555 K 18 / ref.no. 595 2562 K 23) at a maximum speed of 2800 RPM. After buffing, carefully remove the buffing dust from the repair areas without using any liquid. Never treat already buffed surface areas with solvent. Immediately apply a coat of cement to the previously buffed areas. Thus, these surfaces are sealed (protection against dust, light and oxidation). If stored for a long period without any cementcoating, the buffed surface will react with its environment (oxidation). In this case, it will have to be buffed again.
Normally, repair areas on conveyor belts must be located 0.5 – 1 mm below the original level of the rubber cover in order not to come into contact with belt scraper systems.

5.2. Application of adhesive
5.2. Aplicación de adhesivos
Apply adhesive by rubbing a short-bristled brush in a circular movement over the surfaces concerned. Thus, it is ensured that the adhesive penetrates into the structure of the fabric and the buffing texture. Apply the adhesive evenly, making sure that it does not accumulate in certain areas. Otherwise, the quality of the bond will be adversely affected due to an irregular drying process.
5.3. Drying time
5.3. Tiempo de secado
The drying time of the adhesive applied to the already prepared surface areas depends on the movement, the temperature, and the relative humidity of the air. In adverse weather conditions and in winter, the coat of adhesive must be dried by warming it up. During the warming-up process (ref.no. 594 0760 hot air blower Jumbotherm K25.30), avoid superficial drying. In fact, superficial drying leads to the formation of a film of dry adhesive on top of the coat. This film hinders the evaporation of the solvent below it and may further air entrapment. The risk of superficial drying can nearly be excluded with the use of an infra-drying hood (ref. no. 595 3420). However, the drying hood is not suitable for the flammable adhesive system Cement SC4000 / E40 Hardener.
5.4. Test with back of finger
5.4. Prueba con el dorso de los dedos
Touch the coated area with the back of your finger, which must be clean and dry. Thus, you can check whether the adhesive applied is still humid (in this case, a little bit of adhesive will stick to the back of your finger), or whether it has already dried, thus making it possible to apply another coat of adhesive or to put the bonding surfaces together. Choosing the right moment to put the bonding surfaces together requires technical know-how and experience. It mainly depends on weather conditions and the adhesive systems used on site.

5.5. CN-bonding layer
5.5. Capa CN para adhesión
All the REMA TIP TOP cold repair products have CN bonding layers, i.e. factory-installed adhesive layers. These are free from bloomings, and are protected from light and oxygen by special protective foil, until application. There is no need to buff these rubber products. Thus, the buffing work which is normally needed to prepare these materials for application is eliminated. Just apply one coat of adhesive to the CN-bonding layer prior to application. The shelf life of the CN-bonding layer is 2 years from the date of production. An active CN-bonding layer can be identified e. g. by the fact that where it is scored its colour becomes light.

The main difference between these two adhesive systems is the fact that while the system Cement SC 4000 / Hardener E40 is flammable and CFC-free, the system Cement SC 2000 / Hardener UT-R20 is nonflammable. Although solvent is needed for the application of the adhesive, it will not form part of the bond. The major part of the solvent must evaporate before the bonding surfaces are put together. The small rest of solvent which is still in the coat of adhesive when the bonding surfaces are put together will slowly evaporate during the hardening time.

5. General application instructions
5. Consejos generales de aplicación
5.7. Hardener
5.7. Endurecedor
Before application, the adhesive is activated by carefully mixing it with hardener (the second component of the adhesive system). The hardener is an adhesion promoter. The initial tack is increased by adding hardener. This makes it possible to put stress on the bond rather early. The chemical bond between adhesive and hardener further stabilizes the coats of adhesive, and reduces their thermoplasticity in order to increase their temperature stability. Furthermore, the hardener makes the bond more resistant to greases, oils, softeners, and organic solvents. Protect the hardener from humidity, as it reacts with humidity, thus becoming unusable (it is converted from a transparent and clear structure to an opal glass-like structure, which sometimes tends to flocculation).
5.8. Activation of the adhesive
5.8. Activar el adhesivo
Carefully mix adhesive with 4% of hardener according to the prescribed mixing ratio. The chemical reaction starts immediately after the two components have been mixed together. The adhesive-hardener mixture must be applied to the already prepared bonding surfaces within a 2-hour-application time window (potlife). Just mix as much adhesive as can be applied during this time window. The speed of the chemical reaction depends on temperature. Heat accelerates it, and low temperatures slow it down. At the end of the potlife, the mixture becomes harder to apply, as its viscosity increases quickly with the chemical reaction between hardener and the main component going on. Finally, the mixture is gelled irreversibly, and thus becomes unusable.

5. Consejos generales de aplicación
At the end of the minimum drying time, the parts to be bonded are joined within the contact bonding time. Also see item 5.4 (”test with the back of your finger“). When applying the repair patch, coat the CN bonding layer with adhesive, then cover it with protective foil. Cut the protective foil in two halves prior to application. The protective foil makes it possible to centre the repair patch without activating the adhesive coat. After correctly positioning the repair patch, lift part of it, and pull off one half of the protective foil. Remove the other half of the protective foil in the same way. If the maximum drying time has been exceeded, the coat of adhesive is too dry and has no longer any adhesion. In this case, the bonding surfaces can be put together only after applying another coat of adhesive. After having been put together, the bonding surfaces may no longer be moved against one another. The bonding surfaces must be put together avoiding air entrapment, and then be pressed together or be stitched on for a short time. First, stitch them on slightly with the wide roller-stitcher (45 / 12 mm) starting from the centre outwards, then stitch them on vigorously with the narrow roller-stitcher (4mm), starting from the centre outwards.

°
Using a 6” knife, bevel the 15mm wide area between the inside and outside marking on all sides. In case of rubber covers with a thickness of 1.5mm at the most, this 15-mm wide area can only be buffed (bevelling it with a 6” knife is unnecessary in this case.) Buff the 15mm wide area on the rubber cover including what may be left of the intermediate rubber (without damaging the fabric). Remove the buffing dust with a brush, without using any liquid.
°

Remove the protective foil from the repair patch. Apply an even coat of cement-hardener mixture to the repair area and then to the CN bonding layer of the repair patch. Let these coats dry until they are slightly sticky (test with the back of your finger). Apply the repair patch, press it onto the repair area, and stitch it on vigorously with the narrow roller-stitcher, starting from the centre outwards.

If several repair patches are required for repairing larger damage, these must overlap each other in a 20mm wide area, against the running direction of the conveyor belt (repair patches arranged like roof tiles) in order to prevent belt scrapers from damaging the repair area. Buff the overlapping area on the initially applied repair patch, then coat it with cement-hardener mixture, and let the coat dry completely (at least for 30 minutes).
Then, apply another coat to the previously buffed overlapping area on the first repair patch, including the repair area and the CN bonding layer of the second repair patch. Let these coats dry until they are slightly sticky (test with the back of your finger). Correctly position the second repair patch, press it on, and vigorously stitch it on (avoiding air entrapment).
16

Rubber sheeting is necessary to cover the last fabric ply. The dimensions of the rubber sheeting are calculated as follows:
– Thickness: 0.5 – 1mm thinner than the original rubber cover – Length: length of repair + min. 10mm – Width: width of repair + min. 10mm
Apply cement-hardener mixture, first to the whole repair area, then to the CN bonding layer of the rubber sheeting. Let these coats dry until they are slightly sticky (test with the back of your finger).
Apply the rubber sheeting, press it on, and vigorously stitch it on, starting from inside outwards. Cut any protruding rubber sheeting flush with the rubber cover, using the offset knife.
Once again stitch the cut edges on vigorously with the narrow roller-stitcher.
Along the edge of the conveyor belt, cut any protruding material vertically with the 6” knife.

Cover the injury on the pulley side as follows:
Apply a repair strip or a (non fabric-reinforced) repair patch which exceeds the ends of the tear by at least 50 mm. Mark the outline of the repair strip or patch on the rubber cover.
Carefully buff the rubber cover in an area which is a little larger than the outline drawn. Remove the buffing dust with a brush, without using any liquid.
Coat the previously buffed area with cement-hardener mixture, and leave the coat to dry completely (at least for 30 minutes).
30 minutos).
Then apply cement-hardener mixture, first to the repair area, then to the CN bonding layer of the repair strip. Let the coats dry until they are slightly sticky (test with the back of your finger).
Apply the repair patch, press it on, and vigorously stitch it on.
Cut any raised ends of the repair strip flush with the offset knife.
Along the edge of the conveyor belt, cut any protruding material vertically with the 6” knife.

Repair using REMA TIP TOP repair strips
Check to what extent the rubber edge of the conveyor belt has been damaged. If necessary, cut damaged parts (loose rubber, frayed edges of fabric) flush with 6” knife.
Select a suitably sized repair strip (exceeding the damage area by at least 50mm on all sides), and mark its outline on the rubber cover, on both the pulley side and carrying side.
Inside this marking, draw another marking whose sides are 15mm (the width of a ruler) away from it, on both the pulley and carrying side. In order to prepare and to remove the rubber cover, proceed as described on page 15.
Buff the rubber surface together with the 15mm-wide transition area between the inside and outside marking (do not damage exposed fabric plies.) Carefully remove the buffing dust with a brush, without using any liquid.

10. Repairs to rubber edge damage Coat the previously buffed repair area with cement-hardener mixture, on both the pulley and carrying side. Leave the coat to dry completely (at least for 30 minutes).
During the drying time, cut suitable strips of CN filler rubber just as long as, but a little wider than the repair area, in order to restore the original thickness of the rubber edge.
Remove the protective foil from the rubber strip to be applied. Apply an even coat of cementhardener mixture, first to the repair area, then to the CN bonding layer of the strip of filler rubber. Let the coats dry until they are slightly sticky (test with the back of your finger).
Apply the suitably cut strip of filler rubber with its coated side to the repair area, press it on, and vigorously stitch it on, startin from the centre outwards (to avoid air entrapment).
In order to re-build the rubber edge, repeat this operation until the original thickness of the rubber edge is restored.

If several repair strips are required for repairing larger longitudinal damage, these must overlap each other in approx. 20 mm wide areas, against the running direction of the conveyor belt (repair strips arranged like roof tiles) in order to prevent belt scrapers from damaging the repair area.
Buff the overlapping area on the initially applied repair strip, then coat it with cement-hardener mixture, and let the coat dry completely (at least for 30 minutes).
30 minutos).
Then, apply a coat to the previously buffed overlapping area on the first repair strip, including the repair area and the CN bonding layer of the second repair strip. Let these coats dry until they are slightly sticky.
Correctly position the second repair strip, press it on, and vigorously stitch it on (avoiding air entrapment.)
