REACTION PAPER (ECEssentials) ECESS proudly presented the 2015 Annual PUP-ECE Conference with the theme ECEssentials 2015: Unforeseen Edges of ECE, Converging Concepts to Contemporary Realm last February 16-21, 2015 that fortifies and highlights the capabilities as future electronics engineers. February 16, 2015 was the opening day held at the Bulwagang Balagtas, Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center which is located at the PUP Main Building. The assembly time was 8AM to 9AM and the program proper started at exactly 9AM. The audience was required to wear formal attire or corporate attire to make the event more ceremonial. First talk was made by Ms. Patricia Ann Roque from TV 5 whose topic was about Personality Development. Next speaker was Engr. Enrico Claro Delmoro, from professional regulation commission, who talked about Career Opportunities for Filipino ECEs in the ASEAN Community and lastly, the most awaited speaker that day, Mrs. Doris Bigornia, an anchor from ABSCBN News who also talked about Personality Development towards Social Responsibility and Leadership. Among the three speakers, I liked Engr. Delmoro because we got a hint about the board exams. On February 17, 2015 (Day 2), seminar was held at Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Hasmin Hostel. The afternoon session composed of 1 st year, 3rd year and 4th year students from 1:30PM5PM had three great speakers. One of the speakers in the afternoon session was Mr. John Gemperle also known as “Papa Jack”. When he arrived, he delivered us an apology due to his unpunctuality but we, the addressees understood him knowing that he is a celebrity with a busy schedule. Going back to the seminar, he arrived at exactly 3:30PM and started to talk about Internet and the Youth Today. He discussed the advantages but more on the disadvantages of internet and gadgets to the youth. Mentioning how gadgets and internet can affect the relationship of a family, he uttered that it lessens the bond between the members of the family, having a gap between each other. He also differentiated the manners of men courting women during the old days and the manners of the men courting women today. He added that internet and gadgets make it easy and effortless for a man to reach out for the girl they like. Another is when there is a wedding, the guests, whether young or old, take pictures of the bride while walking down the aisle which takes away the significance of the event. What’s the use of the hired photographer if there are lots of cameras around, right? We all know that internet and gadgets have many benefits to us humans especially to students if used appropriately. The idea is that proper use and discipline will drive users to a more convenient life. Listing down all the advantages, these are countless. We can experience faster communication, abundant resources when studying, entertainment, social networking staying us connected with one another, online services and a lot more. In summary, he inculcated in our minds that even though the Internet has the potential to make our lives simple and convenient, it also holds the power to wreak havoc. Its influence on us is mostly dictated by the choices we make while being online. With prudent use, we can manage to harness its unlimited potential and steer clear of its adverse effects. Third seminar we’ve attended was on February 18, 2015 from 10AM to 12:00PM. Actually, we expected three speakers but the last speaker failed to come. The first talk was about Schneider Electric. I
find it hard to listen to the speaker because I’m not that interested to her talk which was very opposite to the talk of the second presenter which was Mr. Bobby P. Manalo from ABS-CBN Global. His topic was very exact to my interest and to my course that’s why I listen attentively to him. Aside from that, he has a very nice and organized presentation. He is a very bright person too which makes me admire him most. Next seminar was on February 20, 2015 from 1:30PM-5:00PM. Topics shared were Technologies Behind Air Traffic Management and Navigation System, Television Broadcasting by Engr. Alexander Cachola. Last topic discussed was about SAP. Mr. Arjay Sariento’s topic was not really related to our course that is why I had a hard time to understand his topic. Lastly, on February 21, 2015, topics shared were about Designing Fiber Optic Communication System, Patent and Copyright and Designing, Testing and Obtaining and Energy Efficient Electronics Devices. Having a series of seminars helps us students to familiarize extensively with the essence of our chosen field and to allow us to interact with examples of the practical problems that always occur everyday. Thank you to ECE family and to the ECESS officers who organized and put effort to make this event successful.

REACTION PAPER (Synergy Seminar) On November 19, 2014 (Day 1), a seminar was held at Maynilad Room in UP Diliman as part of the Synergy (Electrical and Electronics Engineering Summit 2014). The venue, the background music as you enter the room and the attire of the participants were very appropriate for the event. Synergy is a four-day gathering for students undertaking EEE or courses related to it. It aims for students to share thoughts and ideas regarding the importance and relevance of EEE in Filipino people’s everyday lives. This summit is composed of 5 different events namely, Techno Talk, Ingenious Ideas, Revolutionary Robotics, Dynamic Discourse and Corporate Connection. One of the events that we’ve participated was the Techno Talk. Techno Talk was comprised of three talks which are all about dated, modern and approaching EEE trends in the academe, industry and government scenes. The registration for the seminars started at 8:00AM – 9:00AM followed by the opening remarks of one of the organizers. It was then followed by the Speaker for Academe which was Dr. Michael Angelo Pedrasa, whose the topic energy development was assigned. He talked about smart grids. I have learned that smart grids are modernized electrical grids that use analogue or digital information and communications technology to gather and act on information in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity. Second speaker was speaker for Government. He is a Senior Science Resarch Specialist. He talked about disaster prevention. His talk was also about the project NOAH. He quoted “It started because of Sendong Disaster in Iligan.” This project has components like Hydromet Sensors Development, LIDAR, Flood NET, hazard information media, landslides and geohazards using high resolution topography, doppler system development, storm surge and last but not the least is the NOAH Weather Information Integration for System Enhancement (WISE). I have learned about how the concerns like PAG-ASA measure the weather. It is not that easy as you think of it. All these components are being used and should be utilized accurately. The last speaker was Speaker for Corporate who was Sir Earl Martin Valencia. He discussed about Advanced Technology: Leadership, Innovation and Ideaspace which is a non-profit organization that aims to help building technology entrepreneurs develop groundbreaking innovations and transform these into successful businesses. Of all the invited speakers, I liked him the most because he related his talk about himself, his success and his failures wherein we, the listeners related ourselves. We heard convincing and encouraging words from a very successful person persuading the listeners to do the same. At 11:00AM, Sponsor Talk began. Indra being a global leader in the technology, innovation and talent was introduced to us by the employees of the company. All in all, I can say that they really have an organized programme; however, the speakers talked too fast because of the limited time given to them. But in terms of knowledge provided, the speakers gave so much information.
REACTION PAPER (Ingenious Ideas)
On November 19, 2014 (Day 1), after the seminar held at Maynilad Room in UP Diliman, the event Ingenious Ideas came next in line as part of the Synergy (Electrical and Electronics Engineering Summit 2014). The venue for this event was the same room where the seminar took place. One of the events that we’ve participated was the Ingenious Ideas. Ingenious Ideas is an idea generation contest where participants will be given problems related to the topics presented in the Techno Talk. It helps the students to think creatively and solve problems relevant to today’s society. Well, the topics presented in the Techno Talk just revolve on energy, disasters, and technology. The registration for the Ingenious Ideas started at 1:00PM – 1:20PM followed by the opening remarks of one of the organizers. It was then followed by dividing the participants into groups composed with 8-10 members each group. After that, Ideation Session took place wherein they helped us imagine solutions for worst situations that our country is experiencing nowadays. The Ideaspace was introduced to us by Ms. Goldy Yancha. She let us think for a bright idea for about an hour. In that one hour, we thought of problems people are most encountering. Our group came up with the machine Barya-bols in order to resolve problem of the customers with large denominations of cash on hand who need only coins to pay someone. After the brainstorming, the marshals let us roam around UP to ask UP students about the feasibility of our ideas. The allotted time for the participants was already consumed so time to pitch the ideas to the judges. Team NU with idea Tabitech which aims to address problems in the health & medicinal field was the first presenter followed by the Bumble-Bus by Team PUP which is a radio transmission system integrated to bus terminals. Replace It, another entry from NU, proposed a modularized tablet. Another PUP team presented the Negative Ionizer or Neonizer, a solution to some of our pollution problems. Students from UPang presented their answer to energy crises: Transparent Solar Panels. Sometimes, having large denominations of money is a huge inconvenience. Barya-Bols from Team PUP addressed this. Last team PUP Manila's TBA - The Blind Aid presented. With sensors, it aims to help blind persons become more mobile. I truly enjoyed this activity because aside from learning, we also honed our mind and developed our social skills. We, PUPians who participated at the event were very overwhelmed because we got the 1st place and the 2nd place competing with other states and universities from different places.
