1
SCOPE Colour coding is an internationally accepted means of ensuring recognition and identification of critical equipment, pipeline and storage vessel contents and a variety of hazardous conditions. It is recognized that colour coding alone will not eliminate a hazard and that it is only used as a supplement to other accident prevention methods. The objective of this standard is to provide a guideline for uniform colour code system, thereby reducing the potential for personal injury, misuse of equipment and equipment damage.
2
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS TO BE SPECIFIED BY THE ENGINEER This specification has been produced to facilitate the use of National guidelines for colour coding by summarizing the requirements in SANS Standards (which are based upon ISO standards). It is anticipated that users of this document will take it as an initial draft for their colour coding requirements. This will enable them to specify their own colours where there is no standard identified and extend the equipment lists to suit their own particular plant requirements. Notes: It is the responsibility of line management and supervisors to ensure that all employees under their control are conversant with and fully understand the colour code system in use. Line Management and Designers shall ensure that changes in lighting conditions do not significantly alter the colour perception. Equipment exposed to daylight should be painted with UV resistant paint e.g. Polyurethane. (Epoxy paint shall be avoided). Refer to Chamber of Mines Data sheet 2.1 for details of recommended band colours where no SANS standard is available. Refer to SANS 10140-1 for guidelines on the use of characters on signs. Refer to SANS 10140-2 for guidelines on the use of colour for identifying hazards. Refer to SANS 10140-3 for details of pipe indication systems and descriptive code indicators. Refer to SANS 1091 for information associated with standard colours.
