• Official definition: Peppermint water is a clear saturated solution of peppermint oil in purified water prepared by one of the processes described under aromatic waters

Determine the amount of ingredients needed to prepare 10 mL of Peppermint Water, NF:
Give the use of each ingredient in the preparation:
Talc- breaks volatile substances into minute particles thereby exposed to solvent; it removes excess of the volatile substance and is insoluble in water, therefore easy to remove. It is also a dispersing agent. Peppermint oil- the gives flavor and taste Substitutes for talc- kielseghur, siliceous earth (clay), charcoal, chalk, magnesium carbonate

What are the two methods of preparing aromatic waters:
Distillation- is the most ideal way for efficiency and quality of yield. It is slow and decomposition of essential oils and it may volatilize due to heat. Solution- more convenient in terms of time and equipment but the excess oils may be drawn off by water.

Procedure:
Mix thoroughly 0.02 mL peppermint oil with 0.15 g talc. Add 7 mL purified water then shake for 10 minutes. Filter until it is clear and pass purified water through the filter to make 10 mL. b.

Appearance- clear colorless solution Volume- 10 mL % Alcohol content- 0 % Pourability- easily pourable Physical stability- no floating impurities, no precipitation, no mold
