Jute is available at most craft stores by the yard, by the ball, or in a 10 pound bo lt. The various weights and plies are shown on the chart.
GIJquipment There are numerous types of boards on the market. The one , used in this book, the Lee Originals Craft Board, is marked off 1n 1 tnch squares for ease in measuring . Circles are provtded to use as a gutde when working on a curve. T-Pins are tncluded to aid in keeping your knots in place. A tape measure, rubber bands, and scissors are also neces sary items. Some of the designs shown in this book require tha t the knotting be done with the work suspended from a hook. The hook should be strong and attached to a stud or beam for support, since some of the hangings may weigh up to 30 pounds when they contain 10 pounds of jute, a large cl·ay pot, and so tl.

But these aesthetic qualities will be for nothing if the sling cannot support the combined weight of the pot, soi l, and water. All of the designs in this book are started with a loop at the top of the hanging which contains all of the cords. This basic structu~e allows the combined weight of pot, soil, and water to be dtstrtbuted equally to all cords.

To estimate the yardage for a given hanging, you should allow four times the finished length desired, DOUBLED. However, when long sinnets of spirals are used, allow six times the finished length, doubled. Example: Finished length desired - 1 yard 4 x finished length = 4 yards Doubled ( 4 x 2) = 8 yards Total cords desired - 16 Cut eight 8:yard cords When loop is made this will give you 16 working cor ds, each four yards long.

The primary cord used in this book is jute. Jute is available in its natural state, bleached, tarred, or dyed . For outdoor use in pot slings, we suggest the tarred jute. It has been treated to retard rot from strong sun light and high humidity. Natural or bleached jute is exce ll ent also . However, care must be taken not to overwater plants in porous containers, such as c lay pots. We do not recommend colored jute for outdoor use unless the jute is labeled "Colorfast" or "NonFade" and the pot sling will be in the shade. For indoor use the dyed jute comes in a variety of beautiful co lors. '
Yarn,' nyl on, cotton, and various other types of cords may also be used, depending upon the effect you wish to create. Yarn gives a beautiful soft look and iends itself to very intricate patterns. Nylon is durable and is u"Sed effectively in belts and necklaces. Cotton cord gives a very natural look to a purse or belt. As you can see, there is a cord that can be used in Macrame for almost any desired effect.
It is important to use cord which will ho ld its shape when knotte d and give the depth and design you are looking for. Jute has all these qualities.
Dictionary
The thickness of jute is determined by two things. The th ickness of the individual strand, cal led plies, and the number of plies. For example, f/72/4 ply indi cates 4 strands of f/72 jute wrapped together. The la rger the number a strand has, the thicker it is. Thus, ju te of f/120/3 ply is thicker than f/72/3 ply. Even though they both have the same number of strands (3). the f/120 strands are thicker than the f/72.
TERMS
For the construction of pot slings and wa ll hangings in this book, we have used Handi-Craft Pak jute-Fitzgerald Enterprises, Crown Craft jute-Crown Craft, Fiber-Knot jute-Due South imports, and Macra Naut jute-S tanislaus imports in both natural and colors . Jute of the same size from any other manufacturer is equiva lent .

Variation A: After completing Steps 1 and 2, make a Lee Medallion with Button out of t/28/3 ply colored jute on each of the 4 unknotted cords. For each medallion, cut a 24" cord for the core and a 65" cord for the working cords. Find the center of each cord and tie both cords around one of the free cords with an Overhand Knot about 3" below wrapping. The medallion is made w ith 3 Square Knots above and below the button. When completed, you should have two end s at the top and two ends at the bottom . Turn the medallion over and make an Overhand Knot in the back with all four cords. Trim ends short so that the knot and ends are not visible from the front_ Proceed to Step 3.
INSTRUCTIONS Step No. 1: Cut eight 13-yard cords. Make a 2lfz" Loop and Wrap according to directions given in Technique Section.
Variation B: After completing Steps 1 and 2, place a bead on each of the four unknotted cords. Stagger the beads 2 to 4 inches from the base of the wrapping. Tie an Overhand Knot below each bead to hold the bead in place. Proceed to Step 3.
Step No . 2 : Select 12 cords around the outside of the wrapping and divide into four groups of 3 cords each. You shou ld have 4 co rds remaining in the center. Make a 7" Square Knot sinnet with each of the four groups. Use 2 cords for working and 1 for core. Push the first Square Knot of each group up tight against the wrapping. Step No. 3: Tie a scrap of jute around the 4 center cords about 18" from the base of the wrapping. Hang the sling by the ring.
INSTRUCTIONS Step No. 1: C\Jt si x 9-yard cords. Make a 2lf2" Loop and Wrap according to the directions given in Technique Section.
Using a 50" cord, Wrap all cords at the base of the Square Knot sinnets. Trim ends of wrapping . F"ig. A Holding the 4 tied cords, grip the wrapping and slide up until the 7" sinnets form the desired arcs. Fig. B
Step No. 2 : Divide the 12 cords into three groups of 4 cords each. Use 2 cords for working and 2 for core throughout this sling. With one group, make a 1" Square Knot sinnet, a 2" Half Knot Spiral sinnet, and a 1" Square Knot sinnet. Refer to this as Pattern A.
In the next step, the four main sin nets must be constructed in such a way that the arcs do not slip when weight is applied to the fini s_hed hanging. The method used is to incorporate one of the four tied center cords into each sinnet as a working cord, not as a core.
Step No. 3: Beginning 3" from the last Square Knot, make a Lee Medallion (Techn iq ue Section). The space of unknotted cords above the completed medallion determines the space to be left below the medallion. Refer to this as Pattern B.
Step No. 4: Remove work from the hook. Pin to a macrame board through the second wrapping. Release one center cord and combine this with 3 free cords. Make a 12" Half Knot Spiral sinnet with 4 cords. Use 2 cords for working and 2 for core. Repeat this procedure for the three remaining sinnets.
Step No. 4: Alternate Pattern A and Pattern 8 until you have 3 sections of Pattern A and 2 sections of Pattern B. Repeat Step 4 with rema ini ng two group s of 4 cords.
Step No. 5: Hang the sling and check to see that all four sinnets are even. Reverse the cords in each Half Knot Spiral sinnet (Technique Section) and place the 2 center cords through a bead. Continue the Half K not Spiral sinnet for 16" below the bead .
Step No. 5: Leave the space established in Step 3. Wrap all cords for approximate ly 1112" with a 50" cord. Trim ends of wrapping. Trim Fringe to desired length following Pattern A in Tech nique Section.
Cradle: Follow Pattern .A or Pattern B in Technique Section.
Note: If desired, you may make Crad le A to support the terrarium before wrapping.
