Location The Maldives consists o 1190 islands islands grouped into 26 natural atolls scattered over an area o 90,000 sq. km straddling the equator between be tween latitudes 7°6” north and 0°42” south and longitudes 72°32” and 73°46” east.

Geography The atolls o the Maldives are ormed rom coral structures. The atolls are part o a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which stretches over 2000 kilometers. The islands are low lying with the highest point at approximately eight eet above sea level. Ring-shaped ree structures structures orm the atolls and these rees provide the natural deense against wind and wave action on these delicate islands.

Weather and Climate The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year round and a great deal o sunshine. The warm tropical climate results in relatively minor variations in daily temperature through-

Diving Maldives is home to some o the most diverse marine auna and ora in the world. Tens o thousands o rees, a thousand recorded species o sh, over two hundred species o coral and hundreds more species o other marine lie; no wonder many see this as one o the greatest dive destinations on earth.
Dive Sites There are thousands o dive sites; so numerous that you can literally swim over rom one to the other. Only a small percentage per centage o the Maldives rees have ever been dived. Each dive site has its unique characteristics in orm, auna and ora, the currents and other elements that shape and mould them. Resorts concentrate concentrate on dive sites within a one or two-hour radius, while cruise boats cover more ocean and thereore a greater variety o sites.
Dive Facilities The dive centre is one o the most important acilities in any resort. Each resort has a dive centre and are staed by qualied dive instructors. instructors. Divers may, i they wish, bring along their own dive gear, however the centre carry a wide range o rental equipment. At resorts diving is conducted daily all year round. Even in Malé there are some dive centres, mainly serving the residents o Malé. There are two decom de compression pression chambers in the Maldives located located in Kaau Atoll and Ari Atoll.

Water Sports Spor ts All resorts without exception have water water sports centres that provide a range o water sports and un activities. The most popular among these are snorkeling, snor keling, windsurng and catamaran sailing. The water sports centres are equipped with boards and sails o dierent dierent sizes and some oer courses or beginners beginners and advanced windsurers and sailors. Among other popular water sports activities ac tivities are parasailing, kayaking, kite-surng, water-skiing and jet skiing. Some resorts resorts even oer you the opportu oppor tunity nity to try out your sailing skills on a local dhoni.
Surng Today surng is the astest growing water sport in the country, with several several sur breaks that are documented documented and well-known by sur enthusiasts. The most impor important tant sur event is the annual international sur event which has placed Maldives rmly on the world’s sur map.
Surng Season The best season to sur in the Maldives is the Southwest Southwest Monsoon rom April to October. Surers are most likely to enjoy the biggest swells rom June to Septem Sep tember. ber. The sur generally ranges in size rom 3-8 eet.
Surng Breaks The best known sur breaks are in the North and South Male’ Atoll and most surers stay in resorts close to these breaks. However cruise operators oer specialized specialized surng cruises, that give you the opportunity to test some o the less known sur breaks in the atolls urther away rom Male’ Atoll.
Excursions Almost all resorts oer an excursion program. Some o these programs are scheduled while others are tailor-made to suit individual needs. The scheduled scheduled programs oten include islandislandhopping and night-shing; unique terms or a unique destidestination.
Island Hopping An ‘island-hopping’ excursion would take you to another resort, re sort, an uninhabited island and an inhabited island all in a day-tour designed to give you a taste o the country. You would also get the opportunity to snorkel in the clear waters o a desert island and experience a barbecue on the beach. Some resorts take this a step urther by conducting the excursion by sea plane.

Travel to Maldives Although geographically geographically isolated the Maldives is easily accessible by air rom anywhere in Southeast Asia, Middle East and Europe. Colombo Colombo is an hour’s journey away by air, rom Singapore and Dubai it takes about our hours and rom Europe it takes nine to eleven hours to reach Male’. Malé Inter Interna national tional Airport Male’ International Airport is on an island that only houses the airport and related acilities. The airport located on Hulhule Island Island is a modern well-equipped airport with all the acilities and services one would expect rom an international airport. The airport airport complex houses terminals or arrivals and depar departures, tures, landside shops and airside duty ree shops, restaurants, medical acilities, bank, post oce and other services. The island island also houses the airport hotel.
What to pack The Maldives is warm throughout the year. Light, cotton and linen wear is ideal. Pack lots o tee shirts, beachwear, beachwear, and wraparound skirts, cotton shirts and shorts. For visits to inhabited islands, where most o the streets are o compact sand, or Malé where the streets are paved, sandals are easy to walk on. Some essential items include swimwear, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat or a cap. I your travel plan includes traveling to many islands, a mosquito repellent may become handy.
Immigration/Visa Tourists Tourists are issued a maximum o 30-day tourist visa on arrival. A valid travel document is necessary. Visa extensions are granted by the Department Department o Immigration and Emigration in Malé.
Customs The import o rearms, drugs, pornography and idols o worship are prohibited. Dogs, pigs, and pork products are also prohibited or import by tourists. Alcohol imported under a special license is available in all the resorts. Similarly pork products are available at most o the resorts as well. Male’ the Capital
Malé with a population o about 100,000 is the commercial and political hub o the Maldives. It is home to all government minis ministries tries and departments, all o the larger companies, banks, communi communications cations and the key institutions that control the nation’s economic economic and social lie. Malé consists o ve districts or wards; our on the island o Male’, A th on Villingili , the island to west o Male’ just 10 minutes away by boat, a sixth on Hulhumale’ which is 20 minutes away by boat. The Male’ International Airport is on Hulhule Island, a couple o miles to the north east o Malé.

Sights o Male’ Hukuru Miskiiy The Hukuru Miskiiy or Friday Mosque built in 1656 during the reign o Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar contains some o the nest samples o Maldivian workmanship. The walls are built with nely uted coral blocks with elaborate coral carvings. Inside the mosque are intricate wooden engravings. engravings. The minaret o the Hukuru Miskiiy was built in 1667.
The Presidential Palace The Presidential Palace, Theemuge is one o the most important attractions or those visiting Malé and is on the itinerary o any tour in Malé. The design design and architecture o the palace combines the grandeur o local tradition with modernity. The palace is on Orchid Magu west o the main shopping area.

Mulee-aage Mulee-aage was built just beore the First World War by Sultan Shamsuddeen III or his son. The Sultan was deposed and his son never took oce. In 1953, during the First Republic Muleeaage was designated as the Presidential Palace and was the ocial residence o the president until the new Presidential Palace was built.
Islamic Centre The Islamic Centre opened in 1984, is located between Meduziyaaraiy Magu and Ameeru Ahmed Magu. The Centre’s most important eature is the grand mosque, Masjidul Sultan Mohammad Thakuruaanu al A’zam which holds up to 5,000 people. In addition to the Grand Grand Mosque, the Islamic Centre Centre houses a conerence hall, an Islamic library and classrooms.
Sultan Park & Museum The Sultan Park and the National Museum are part o the old Sultan’s Palace and Palace grounds during the time o the monarchy. archy. The Museum opened in 1952 and displays a large variety o objects and artiacts rom times gone by. The collection comprises o relics rom the pre-Islamic times to royal antiquities belonging to dierent monarchs. The Museum is open rom 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. except Fridays and public holidays.
Medhuziyaaraiy Just opposite the small park adjoining the Hukuru Miskiiy, is the tomb o Abu-al Barakaat, to whom the nation pays its respects or bringing to our shores the enlightenment o Islam in 1153.
The ‘Articial Articial Beach’ It may sound strange in a country renowned or its beaches, however however it is true that the residents o Malé get to enjoy an articial beach built on the eastern side o the island. Markets Fish Market One o the most exciting places to visit in Malé is the Fish Market. The market really comes to lie in the aternoon when dhonis, or the local shing boats start arriving with their catch. ‘Local Market’ A little urther to the west o the sh market is the aptly named Local Market. The The market consists o a series o stalls that stock the produce o islands rom all over the Maldives. This is the place to be i you wish to sample some o the local ruits or preserves.
Eating Out Wherever you are in Malé, there is a restaurant, a ‘coeeshop’, or a ‘teashop’, or an eating establishment o some sort near you. Each type oers a dierent dierent type o ood and social expe experience. rience.
Restaurants There are several restaurants, some o which are air-conditioned and others providing a more relaxed open-air concept. Restau Restaurants rants range rom those oering sophisticated inter internanational menus to those serving more localized Asian and EuroEuropean dishes. Some are open rom breakast, while others are open rom lunchtime. All restaurants close at 1.00 a.m. in the morning.
‘Tea Shops’ The traditional Malé ‘teashop’ is still the most popular amongst the locals. Here you get to enjoy local oods and are sometimes some times noisy with lots o activity. There are several teashops scattered around the island. I you are in a hurry this is the ideal place as they serve the local version o ‘ast ood’. Teashops open early in the morning some as early as 5.00 a.m. and close at 1.00 a.m.

Cofee Shops The coee shop is the modern version o the teashop. Coee shops serve a variety o snack and quick meals such as noodles and ried rice. Mostly small and cozy, they oer good meals at lower prices compared to restaurants. Coee shops open in the morning between 8.00 a.m and 9.00 a.m and remain open until 1.00 a.m in the night.
Sport & Recre Recreation ation Maldivians are avid sports ans and enjoy playing and watching a wide range o sports and games. Football is the most popular sport in the country and there are several tournaments o dierent levels held throughout the country each year. Volleyball, swimming, basket basketball, ball, cricket, athletics, badminton and tennis tournaments are signi signicant cant events in the national sports calendar.
Facilities in Male’ There are several gyms, tness clubs and aerobic centres in Malé, with proessional equipment and trainers. Billiards and pool are increasing in popularity and there are a ew snooker and pool centres in Malé. Maldives is known or its diving and spas, and Malé is no exception. Although ew in numbers, there are diving centres and spas right here in the capital. Surng is one o the astest growing sports in the country. country. Malé Point, a recognized sur break, south east o Malé, is popular with local surers.
Shopping Malé is the commercial hub o the Maldives and there are a variety o shops, serving the needs o the 80,000 residents o the city and the thousands o shoppers who come to Malé rom the is lands. While the neighborhood neighborhood convenient stores may be open at 6.00 or 7.00, shops in the main streets open around 9.00 or 10.00 in the morning. Telephone Services Telephone and mobile phone services in the country are pro vided by Dhiraagu, the Maldives vided telecommunications company. GSM Mobile phone services are also provided by Dhiraagu and Wataniyya Telecoms; post and prepaid services are available. Roaming arrangements are available or customers o ma jor mobile operators op erators in the world.
Online There are several cyber caés located in dierent areas o Malé. Internet services in the Maldives are provided by two ISPs licensed licensed by the government.
Postage & Courier Service The Maldives Post Limited provides postal services in addition to their express courier service EMS. Most o the international courier courier services are also represented represented in Malé.

Money Matters Currency/Money Currency/Money Changers The local currency is the Ruyaa. A Ruyaa is 100 Laari. The Ruyaa is in denominations o 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 Ruyaa notes, 1 and 2 Ruya coins and 50, 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 Laari coins. The exchange exchange rate as o December 2004 is MR. 12.75 against the United States Dollar. Dollar. All resorts, hotels, most major shops and restaurants are authorized money changers and can accept payment in most major currencies and by credit card. The Bank o Maldives Airport Branch located at the arrivals termi ter minal nal also oers money changing services. I you are in need o Ruyaa while in Malé, banks would be the most convenient choice.
Banks The Bank o Maldives is the national bank and has several branches in Male’. The Bank also has branches in some o the other major population centers such as Seenu Atoll Hithadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll Kulhudhuushi and Lhaviyani Atoll Naiaru. There There is also a branch o the bank at Malé International Airport. Airport. Other banks include HSBC, State Bank o India, Bank o Ceylon and Habib Bank.
ATMs Most o the banks represented in Malé provide automatic teller machine (ATM) services. There are several Bank o Maldives ATMs and ATMs o other banks conveniently located at several key points in Malé, which oer regular ATM services as well as credit card services or some major credit cards.
Getting Around Taxis Although Malé is relatively small you may need the services o a taxi especially i it is raining. In Malé taxis charge between R. 20.00 - 25.00 per stop, with an extra charge o R. 5.00 or luggage carried. Although taxis can be hailed on the street, the norm in Malé is to call one o the many taxi centres that operate in the city.

Protection o Areas & Species in the Maldives Protected Dive Sites 15 important marine dive sites were estab established lished as marine protected protected areas in 1996, regis registered tered in the Ministry o Environment, Energy and Water and managed by the Ministry o Tourism and Civil Aviation. Do’s and Don’ts Cover yoursel properly when visiting inhabited islands and Male’. For men shorts and a shirt are acceptable. Women are expected to cover their bodies and thighs. While swimming trunks, bikinis and other beachwear is the norm on the resort, they are not acceptable on inhabited islands. Remember that nudism in public places is prohibited. Traditionally Maldivians eat with their ngers. I you wish to ollow the local tradition keep in mind that it is considered unhygienic to touch ood with the let hand. I in doubt use a spoon. Be conscious o the delicate local environment. Do not touch or pick corals when diving or snorkeling. The Maldivians use the Islamic greeting “Assalaam “Assalaam Alaikum” to greet riends and strangers alike. “Shukuriyya” means thank you.
