MAGNIFICENCE SCRIPT SCENE ONE: NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION Vicente: Good afternoon, Mrs. Tumpindo! *tips hat Mrs. Tumpindo: Oh good afternoon to you too, Vicente! How did you find the meeting today? (Bea and CJ playing in the background) Vicente: It was all very exciting! I very much liked your idea about the new barrio fiesta for our neighborhood! Mrs. T: Oh I’m glad you’re participating! Vicente: *looks at children* Your children have grown to be so beautiful since I’d last seen them! They look so smart, and have grown so much taller! Especially Bea! Mrs. T: *looks proud* Why thank you, Vicente! Glad to know my good parenting skills are paying off! Vicente: Indeed, indeed. You know, I have a lot of free time on my hands, and I would love to get to know your children better. How are they doing in school? Mrs. T: They enjoy it very much! But their homework, they are so lazy with them! Vicente: I have nothing to do in the evenings, let me help them. Mrs. T: If you wish to bother yourself. Vicente: *nods and smiles* SCENE TWO: HOUSE Narrator: (WHILE CHILDREN + VICENTE ACT SILENTLY) And it was settled, the man came in the evenings and helped solve fractions for the boy and write correct phrases in language for the little girl. There was nothing the children feared about Vicente, he was always so gentle, so kind. At night when the little girl and her brother were bathed in the light of the big shaded bulb that hung over the big study table in the downstairs hall, the man would knock gently on the door, and come in, he would stand for awhile just beyond the pool of light, the rest of him in shadow. The little girl and her brother would look up at him where they sat, their eyes bright and watch him come fully into the light, his voice soft, his manner slow. He would smell faintly of sweat and pomade, but the children didn’t mind, for they waited for him every evening as they sat at their lessons like this. He’d throw his visored cap on the table, then he’d nod his head to say one was right, or shake it to say one was wrong. It was like this for most evenings, except one that would ultimately reveal his true intentions/feelings. *VICENTE SMILES MALICIOUSLY* SCENE THREE: OUTSIDE SCHOOL/JAPANESE BAZAARS Classmate 1: I’m so excited to purchase paper butterflies at the bazaar today!!!!! Classmate 2: What? You loser!!! Paper butterflies are sooooo last week! Everyone is raging about pencils now! Bea: Yeah! They come in different colors too!
