Below is a description of the II-V-I progressions on the previous page. Notice that the chord tone on which the scale is built is shown under the first note of each scale. This paper doesn't show every possibility but some combinations that are very convenient. The first three II-V-I combinations are all diatonic to the key, that is, no alterations or chromatic embellishing tones. Versions 4 and 5 use scales chosen to supply alterations to the V chords and use smooth stepwise motion, moving either down or up in stepwise motion. Progressions 6, 7 and 8 are II-V-Is in minor keys. Version 6 uses only minor five-note scales. Version 7 uses only major five-note scales. The last version uses diminished scales for the II and V chords. You are encouraged to think of these combinations in terms of what type of scale is used and where is it located in relation to the chord. Then it will be easy to reproduce them in any key.
