The numbers numbers 012, 009, 000 etc are not three three digit numbers, as they all have 0 as the first digit. REMEMBER
Following are some of the properties of three digit numbers: • A three digit number has the Hundreds place with the highest highest place value. • Hundreds place comes after after Tens place such that 100 100 = 10 × 10. • The smallest smallest 3 digit number is 100. 100. • The biggest 3 digit number is is 999.

2. Repres Represent enting ing three three digit digit number numberss using using number number cubes cubes Consider the following scenario: Let 1 unit (or number 1) be represented by a cube or block
.
Then 10 units can be obtained by combining 10 cubes as:
Similarly, 100 units can be obtained by combining ten 10 units as:
10 times Ten (10
×
10) = Hundred (100)
10 times One (10
×
1) = Ten (10)
REMEMBER
3. Coun Counti ting ng thr three ee digi digitt numb number erss usin using g cube cubess Now let us use the cubes learned above to represent three digit numbers.
a)
We know that each collection of cubes represents 100. Since there are 3 collections, therefore, Three digit number = 3 times 100 = 300.
A !"#$%&'() + ,-./0.1 2&34#5%6 733"85)&"34 9:5%3&3' ;8)< 9)=< >?? @&'()4 @:4:%8:=<
b)
Number of hundreds = 1 times 100 = 100 Number of tens = 3 times 10 = 30 Number of ones = 4 times 1 = 4 Therefore, three digit number = 100 + 30 + 4 = 2134
c)
Number of hundreds = 2 times 100 = 200 Number of tens = 0 times 10 = 0 Number of ones = 3 times 1 = 3 Therefore, three digit number = 200 + 0 + 3 = 203
If the cubes for a particular place value are missing, we TIP
assign 0 as the value of the digit.
4. Calc Calcul ulat atin ing g thr three ee digi digitt num numbe bers rs Consider the following coins with different place values. What is the total amount of money in words?
/ !"#$%&'() + ,-./0.1 2&34#5%6 733"85)&"34 9:5%3&3' ;8)< 9)=< >?? @&'()4 @:4:%8:=<
Let us first arrange all the coins according to their place values:
!"#$%&$'

()
(
From the table above, we can calculate the total amount as: Total amount = (6 times 100) + (4 times 10) + (5 times 1) = 600 + 40 + 5 = 645 Now, to write the amount in words, we write the appropriate place values along with the value of the digit. 6 times 100 = 600 = Six hundred 4 times 10 = 40 = Forty 5 times 1 = 5 = Five Hence, 645 = 600 + 40 + 5 = Six hundred f orty five.

!
!
A three digit digit number is a number whose highest highest place value is Hundreds place. Hundreds places comes after Tens place such that 10 times Tens = Hundred. A Hundred Hundred can be be represented by a collection of cubes made up of 10 units of 10 small cubes. To calculate a three digit number, we add the value of all the digits with their appropriate place values.

Hi kids, until now you l earned about the concept of t hre e digit numbe rs. Today we will learn about the place values of different digits in a t hre e digit number. 1. Place Value In our number system, the place value of a digit is the value of the digit depending upon its place or position in the number. We can use a place-value chart as below to understand the value of each position in a number.

.
*+,-& /,+"&
Each column in the place-value chart represents a particular place value. We start from left and increase the value in each column 10 times. Therefore, each place has a value of 10 times the place to its right. In other words we use base 10 to move from one digit to the next. Therefore, Ones = 1 Tens = 10 times Ones Hundreds = 10 times Tens = 100 times Ones
We can make even bigger numbers (4 digits, 5 digits, 6 digits and so on), by increasing the place value by 10 for every TIP
additional digit.

• The digit git ‘5’ has a place value of Hundred (100). Therefore, re, val value of digit ‘5’ ‘5’ = 5 times 100 = 500. • The digit git ‘9’ has a place value of Ten (10). Therefore, re, val value of digit ‘9’ ‘9’ = 9 times 10 = 90. • The digit ‘7’ has a place value of One (1). Therefore, value of digit ‘7’ = 7 times 1 = 7. Now, let us use a num number tra train to repr repre esent ent the val values ues of diff diffe erent rent digi digitts.

2. Expa Expand nded ed form form of a num numbe berr In expanded form, we write a number as the sum of the values of different digits. We already learned how to find the value of each digit by using the place values. So let us try to write a number in the expanded form. Consider the number 243. Let us find the value of all the digits using the number train.

The place value of a digit is the value of the digit depending upon its position in the number. The number system uses base 10 for place values. To find the value of a digit, we multiply the digit with its place value. In expanded form, we represent the number as a sum of the values of all the digits.

1. Comparing nu numbers As we know, numbers represent represent count of something. Therefore, Therefore, comparing numbers is helpful when we need to know if one number is same as, or smaller than, or bigger than, another number. For example, Ria has 5 pencils and Tina has 8 pencils. We can tell which one has more number of pencils by comparing their count. Similarly, when we go shopping, we are always comparing the prices of different products to know which one is cheaper. In mathematics, we use three signs or symbols to compare numbers, 1. Equal to (=): When two number number are exactly same, we say that they they are equal. For e.g, 5 = 5. 2. Greater Than (>): When one number number is bigger than the other number, number, we say that the number is greater than the other number. For e.g, !25 > !20 3. Less Than (<): When one number number is smaller smaller than the other number, we say that the number is less than the other number. For e.g, !87 < !97

Compare the numbers 532 and 536
METHOD
1
Compare the Hundreds place digits of the numbers. • The number having the bigger bigger Hundreds digit digit is greater. • If the numbers have the same Hundreds Hundreds digit, then compare compare the Tens place digits. Numbers 532 and 536 both have 5 as the Hundreds place digit. Therefore, lets compare the Tens place digits.
2
Compare the Tens place digits of the numbers. • The number having the bigger bigger Tens digit is greater. greater. • If the numbers have the same Tens digit, digit, then compare compare the Ones place digits. Now, the numbers 532 and 536 both have 3 as the Tens place digit. Therefore, lets compare the Ones place digits.
3
Compare the One place digits of the numbers. • The number having the bigger bigger Ones digit is greater. greater. • If the numbers have the same Ones digit, digit, then the numbers are equal. The number 532 has 2 as the Ones digit and 536 has 6 as the Ones digit. Since, 6 is bigger than 2. Therefore, 536 is greater than 532 i.e. 536 > 532. Hence, Box 2 has greater amount as compared to Box 1.
If all the place values in given numbers are equal, then the numbers are equal. REMEMBER

SUMMARY !
!
!
!
In mathematics we use three different symbols for comparison of numbers numbers - greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=). A number with more number number of digits digits is always always greater than a number with less number of digits. A number on the right right of a number number line is always greater greater than a number on the left. To compare three digit numbers, we start comparing with the Hundreds digit first, followed by Tens digit and finally Ones digit to compare the number. If two numbers have all the digits same, then the numbers are equal.

So the pattern can be continues as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and so on.
2. Patte attern rn of even even numb number erss In the above example, we saw a pattern of odd numbers. Now lets take a look at a pattern of even numbers. Consider the sequence of numbers 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34. What do you observe about the pattern? 1. Each number in the sequence sequence is an even number. number. 2. The first term is 24, 24, and all other terms are obtained obtained by adding 2 to the previous term. 3. Each term of the sequence sequence is divisible by by 2. +2

Incr Increa easi sing ng/De /Decr crea easi sing ng Patte Pattern rnss So far we learned about the patterns whose each term was greater that the previous term, obtained by the addition of a particular number. In other words the patterns were increasing in nature. But patterns can also be decreasing in nature. Let us see an example of decreasing pattern.

1. It is a decreasing decreasing pattern. 2. The first term is 525, 525, and all other terms are obtained obtained by subtracting subtracting 5 from the previous term. 3. To calculate the next term of of the sequence, we subtract 5 from the the last term i.e. i.e. 500 - 5 = 495. 495. Similarly, 495 495 - 5 = 490 490 490 490 - 5 = 485 485 485 485 - 5 = 480 480 Hence, the pattern can be extended as: 525, 520, 515, 510, 505, 500, 495, 490, 485, 480 and so on.
If the pattern is increasing, increasing, we do addition to obtain the terms, whereas if the pattern REMEMBER
is decreasing, we do subtraction to obtain the terms of pattern.
To recognise patterns, we simply need to identify the factor by which the terms are either incremented or decremented. TIP
4. Chan Change ge in in Hund Hundre reds ds pla place ce val value ue Until now, we learned about the patterns involving a change in the Ones and Tens places. Now, let us learn about patterns that involve a change in Hundreds place.

EXAMPLE
Consider the three boxes below with Rs 100 notes in them. Can you identify the pattern?
!"# %
!"# &
!"# '
Looking at the boxes, we can easily say that it is an increasing pattern as the number of Rs100 notes in Box 2 is more than that in Box 1. Likewise, the number of Rs100 notes in Box 3 is more than that in Box 2. Number of Rs 100 notes in Box 1 = 3 Therefore, total amount in Box 1 = 3 times Rs100 = Rs300 Now, Box 2 has 2 more notes as compared to Box 1. So, Number of notes in Box 2 = 3 + 2 = 5 Therefore, total amount in Box 2 = 5 times Rs100 = Rs500 Similarly, Box 3 has 2 more notes as compared to Box 2. So, Number of notes in Box 3 = 5 + 2 = 7 Therefore, total amount in Box 3 = 7 times Rs100 = Rs700 Hence, the pattern becomes 300, 500, 700, where each box contains Rs200 (2 times Rs100) more than the previous box. +200

SUMMARY !
! !
!
A list of numbers numbers that follow a repeated repeated sequence sequence or pattern is known as a number pattern. A pattern of odd numbers numbers contains only odd numbers numbers separated by a particular number. A pattern of even numbers numbers contains only even numbers numbers separated by a particular number. Each number is an even pattern is divisible by 2. When the pattern is increasing, a number is added to each term to obtain the next term. When a patter is decreasing, a number is subtracted from each term to obtain the next term.
