Title: Measurement and Uncertainty Objective: To determine the mass, volume, diameter, length and time duration of an mass, volume, diameter, length object and its uncertainty.
Introduction: Physics is based on measurements. We use a variety of tools to make precise measurements. Choosing an appropriate instrument to measure a physical quantity is important to ensure that the measurement is accurate and reproducible. The accuracy of a measurement depends on the accuracy of the measuring instrument , the ability of the observer to read the scale properly and the degree of precision of the measuring instrument. In this investigation you will practice the skill of making accurate measurements using a variety of measuring instruments. Then you will use the error propagation formulas to compute the uncertainty in quantities derived from the measurements.

1. Mean ( Xave ) Xave= X1 + X2 + ……. Xn N 2. Range(R) R= Xmax - Xmin
3. Uncertainty in a measurement (∆x)
∆x=R 4. Uncertainty in the mean(∆Xave):
∆Xave=∆X √n 5. Measured value (Xm): Xm=Xave ± ∆Xave
