Expectations are becoming more demanding Today’s cityscape with its ever-expanding choice of modern office buildings and dwindling demand has become a very competitive area. Older buildings struggle to keep up with the demands of companies that need to offer their employees a modern business environment. Very often, current occupants will move to more modern facilities that promise a better cost/quality ratio. And in the evaluation of a building’s potential, occupants are influenced to a high degree by the performance of the internal transportation system. Elevators with jerky rides, out of sync doors and treacherous entry sills do not inspire trust in the whole building, which reduces its potential rental income.
When your elevator starts showing signs of no longer keeping up with the demands of today’s traffic expectations, KONE can now offer you KONE ReSolve X . 2
A flexible control solution Often your elevator's mechanical systems are still in good shape, yet the control system and the moving parts (e.g. doors) no longer offer modern top-class performance. Instead of having to replace the entire elevator, KONE ReSolve X will focus on replacing those parts that deliver a reliable, comfortable and safe ride. 2
The core of this package is a new electrification system that can work with most existing older control systems. In addition, KONE specialists will recommend what other parts need to be upgraded or replaced to make your elevator, and your building, state-of-the-art.
Enhanced reliability Single Relay Design, Serial Transmission and LAN architecture provide higher reliability for three reasons: ■ Decreased number of wearing components, such as relays, wiring length and number of terminations ■ Higher resistance to environmental challenges and power supply instability ■ Increased capacity to be transparent to the peripheral faults, as happens in the computerized environment.
Electrification
Local Area Network As in the modern computerized environments, the logical and physical architecture of ReSolve X is a LAN (Local Area Network). At landings and in the car, each signaling device is equipped with local intelligence as well as protective fuses located on dedicated PCBs. 2
Serial communication These dedicated PCBs communicate with the motherboard in the machine-room via a shared bus utilizing LON, the standard serial communication protocol in building automation applications. In case of mal function, each peripheral will isolate itself from the shared bus, without preventing the rest of the system from working properly. In the traditional parallel configuration, when a fuse burns out, the elevator stops and call out intervention is required to put the system back into operation.
KONE ReSolve X utilizes the latest technology to ensure that the optimum reliability and performance is achieved, with the central computer carrying out over 100 self-checks every second. Thanks to the Local Area Network architecture and Serial Transmission, KONE ReSolve X can isolate localized faults, such as stuck push-buttons and burnt signalization fuses, maintaining elevator service whilst isolating the faulty area. For such an advanced system, KONE ReSolve X has the added advantage of significantly fewer cables in the elevator shaft. Modernizing your elevator with KONE ReSolve X substantially increases reliability, as well as offering flexible features and options. 2

Group Control
KONE ReSolve X Group Control – Exclusive Brain Power 2
At the core of ReSolve X lies the KONE TMS9900 GA technology that has driven KONE’s success with its Alta high-rise buildings solutions. 2
High-speed call allocation The high-speed TMS9900 GA call allocation process consists of four stages: ■ Passenger flows are recorded, identified and measured for short-term and daily traffic statistics. ■ Artificial intelligence is used to learn the traffic and generate forecasts for each weekday. ■ Based on this knowledge a fuzzy logic module generates detailed models of the prevailing traffic patterns. ■ The measured traffic data and the momentary prevailing traffic patterns, together with actual drive time and stop time data, are then processed by the Genetic Algorithm.
Benefits in a nutshell
■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
Improved passenger service On average 15% shorter passenger waiting times Shorter maximum waiting times Enhanced travel comfort Less crowded cars Extended equipment service life Equalized use of elevators
The result is optimized dispatching decisions and landing call allocations in all traffic situations, including the most complex and demanding mixed traffic. This includes incoming, outgoing and inter-floor traffic components.
Enhanced group control TMS9900 GA ensures minimum passenger waiting times as the Genetic Algorithm selects the best dispatching solution for all traffic situations. Artificial intelligence and fuzzy logic further enhance traffic forecasting and traffic recognition patterns. Comparisons show a reduced waiting time of 50% over conventional relay systems, which means long waiting times cease to exist. Many pre-programmed options are available to suit unique building applications. A central computer carries out over 100 self-checks every second.
Ideal for tall buildings The TMS9900 GA control system is designed to optimize dispatching for ALL traffic conditions, even in the tallest buildings. Range of group operational features These include: ■ Extremely quick response to hall calls ■ Ability to prioritize response to length of calls ■ Optimized call handling across elevators within a group, ensuring that the elevator best suited to serve a call is dispatched ■ Ability to securely lock out cars within the group for specific landings ■ Ability to sense heavy demand during non-peak periods, and support needs with immediate service ■ Ability to learn building/tenant use patterns to ensure waiting time for an elevator is minimized
Group Control
The best Genetic Algorithm The control principle is adopted from natural selection. Evolution is simulated in the computer’s memory using genetic operators like “selection”, “crossover” and “mutation“ applied to chromosomes. Only the best chromosomes and genes survive, which means that the best routes of each generation are selected. This evolutionary process over 100 generations produces the best genes for the prevailing conditions. Exclusive traffic handling expertise KONE ReSolve X group control is suitable for elevator group sizes up to 8 cars, with a maximum of 64 floors. The group control system provides building-specific flexibility, with on-site adjustable functions and sophisticated calculation techniques to automatically adapt elevator group operation according to the prevailing passenger traffic situations, minimizing both passenger waiting and travel times. Special group operational features are also available with KONE ReSolve X , such as prioritizing individual floors; optimizing call handling across elevators serving different floors within the same group; and security locking of car/landing calls. 2
2
Enhanced Spacing Principle The group control system, through its unique Enhanced Spacing Principle (ESP), effectively eliminates elevators from “bunching”, thereby greatly reducing passenger waiting times and ensuring smooth and uniform elevator service. ESP combines call response data with car position, load and directional information to make its allocations. Calls that become in danger of waiting too long are identified immediately and cars are rerouted to address them. The result is a significant reduction in waiting and on-board times for passengers; balanced elevator service throughout the building and efficient response to sudden peak demands at a particular floor.
Overlay
KONE MDE-2000 Modernization Overlay System – the Lifesaver when Modernizing Pioneered by KONE The KONE MDE-2000 Modernization Overlay System is a tool that can be used during the modernization phase of larger elevator groups in order to maintain the operation of modernized and un-modernized elevators within a single group. Does your elevator group performance suffer during modernization? You might think it is inevitable. Take out one elevator from a group so it can be modernized, and the per formance of the others will naturally suffer through over-work? Significantly improved handling capacity The illustration clearly shows that the MDE-2000 concept provides a steadily improving traffic performance as the modernization work progresses, instead of a substantially curtailed service due to elevator downtime and split group operation inherent to conventional modernization methods.
With normal group control systems, that is the standard scenario. However, with the KONE MDE-2000 Modernization Overlay System, that is far from reality. KONE MDE-2000 will not only maintain the performance of the existing elevators, but will actually improve the traffic flow.
Enhanced performance during modernization MDE-2000 replaces the existing group control system and immediately greatly improves the call allocation performance. Crucially, it also enables the existing elevators to operate together with the newly modernized elevators as a single group. This ensures that the maximum performance is obtained from the elevators during the difficult modernization phase. True overlay system It is important to note that the MDE-2000 is a true overlay system; only one set of landing pushes is operated by a passenger at a particular floor and this is allocated to either an existing or newly modernized elevator by advanced group control.
Benefits in a nutshell
Update your outdated control system MDE-2000 introduces a unique method of updating inefficient and unreliable existing elevator installations, with a sophisticated microprocessor group control system. It delivers high performance and improved traffic handling capabilities for old medium- to highrise elevator groups. Depending on the existing system, improvements of 20 to 40 % can be realized.
Improved traffic handling during modernization ■ Easy and quick to install ■ Suitable for a wide range of installations ■ Single group operation during modernization ■ Reliable operation
The system analyzes the constantly changing traffic conditions in the building and dispatches the elevators in the most efficient manner possible. Its sophisticated traffic handling capabilities virtually eliminate long waiting times, even during peak periods. The overall result is rapid, accurate passenger service.
■
Overlay
Rapid installation MDE-2000 can be installed in a fraction of the time required for a conventional modernization – in days rather than weeks – minimizing tenant inconvenience. Suitable for a range of installations The system is designed for geared or gearless elevator groups, and adapts to existing power drives and elevator controllers. Various monitoring modes The basic monitoring mode of the system is the Traffic Display. The other main menu modes are Commands, Statistics, Fault Log, Tests, Security and Parameter Set-Up. Additional functions can be programmed into the system with no elevator downtime. The information is available also as hard copy printouts for in-depth analysis.
Minimal disruption of elevator service Due to the advanced control technology and the unique system architecture, an MDE-2000 installation causes minimal disruption in elevator service. Depending on the particular installation, individual elevators are often out of service for only the few hours needed to tie them into the MDE-2000 adapter computers. All the system components are compact and easily wall-mounted in crowded machine-rooms. Easier scheduling of further work The considerably improved handling capacity minimizes disruption caused by further modernization on controllers, doors and cars. This work can be scheduled in accordance with the building owner’s needs.
Drive
KONE ReSolve X Drive Dynamics – Enhancing performance and safety 2
KONE ReSolve X closed-loop control directly controls the current to the motor for accurate floor leveling (within 3 mm), even if the current DC gearless machine is retained. It uses the actual speed and position of the elevator car in the hoistway in conjunction with car speed and location determined by a motor-mounted digital encoder. 2
Passenger safety: The benchmark! ReSolve X significantly enhances passenger safety. In many old elevators, the possible existing leveling accuracy is as high as the floor plate physical dimension: up to plus or minus 150 mm. Not only wheelchairs, but also shopping trolleys, pushchairs or simple heavy bag handling would become a problem. With ReSolve X the leveling accuracy is plus or minus 3 mm. No other existing products perform better. 2
Benefits in a nutshell Enhanced passenger safety ■ Accurate floor leveling ■ Superb ride quality and performance ■ Can be used with existing or new machines ■
2
Accurate floor leveling The latest control and drive systems developed by KONE employ sophisticated position measuring techniques that map the elevator shaft with all floor levels. This constantly delivers the highly accurate floor leveling essential for wheelchair users, the visually impaired and those carrying goods. The position reading technology virtually eliminates all stopping errors possible through position measuring and drive decision delays.
Motion Control Unit A key element of the new system is the Motion Control Unit (MCU). It controls all aspects of the drive control unit and thus allows the CPU to dedicate its processing power to dispatching and other system controls. The MCU calculates all the motion parameters: ■ Car position ■ Speed ■ Drive profiles ■ Floor leveling These are communicated directly to the drive unit, allowing the smooth operation of high speed, high performance drives, which can interface directly to existing hoisting machines. The total gap between reading the elevator position and giving commands to the AC/DC drive is 2 milliseconds, which represent 0.2 millimeters travel during the leveling phase.
Drive
Car Position Closed Loop Control The direct feeding of the drive allows a real breakthrough in the motion control of the elevator: the Car Position Closed Loop Control. Traditionally, closed loop control is conceived as a tachometer reading the traction sheave speed. But this system has 2 limitations: It cannot take into account the stretching or the slipping of the ropes that is a high-rise inherent factor and it doesn’t measure the position. It estimates the position by multiplying time by speed, sometimes wrongly. On the contrary, the Car Position Closed Loop Control realizes the final goal of any positioning control system. It converts the traditional Speed/Time profile to a Speed/Position profile, which is the only relevant information for the leveling purpose. Superb ride quality and performance ReSolve X combines smooth ride with outstanding floor-to-floor performance, achieving optimal flight patterns at any travel distance with the selected combination of jerk and acceleration values. The overall system handling capacity is superior to other systems for leveling accuracy, at creeping speeds, as well as at intermediate speeds, especially on short runs.
During the run, the car position data is constantly updated and fed to the drive processor. The elevator deceleration commences when the distance to the destination floor level corresponds to that required for the optimal floor approach. Depending on the prevailing traffic conditions, this enables the elevator to respond to new landing calls that may appear before the elevator reaches its original destination floor. The deceleration of the elevator progresses until the machine has been brought to a smooth and precise stop electrically. Only then will the holding brake be released, maximizing passenger comfort.
2
Operating characteristics Before the elevator car starts moving, the control electronics supply the machine with the correct torque setting to ensure a smooth start, regardless of the load within the car. This allows the car to move smoothly away from the floor as soon as the brake is released, following the required speed pattern.

KONE EcoDisc ®
KONE ReSolve X 2 EcoDisc Modernization
Unique technology The award-winning, environmentally friendly, energy efficient KONE EcoDisc hoisting technology has been developed to provide modernization solutions suitable for office buildings. This revolutionary technology offers lower energy consumption, improved ride quality, reduced demands on building space and load, and greater reliability.
Fully integrated systems Previously, through various technical and financial limitations, buildings had to be supplied with a mix of different drive technologies: hydraulic, AC/DC geared and AC/DC gearless elevators. Of course, these different technologies had different performance characteristics that did not match each other. With the groundbreaking KONE EcoDisc technology, it is now possible for the first time to use high efficiency gearless technology across the complete range of loads and speeds.
Benefits in a nutshell Space-saving Increased energy-efficiency ■ Environment-friendly operation ■ Improved ride quality ■ ■
Extra space for tight offices The unique axial construction makes the KONE EcoDisc hoisting machines very compact, with the motor effectively integrated with the traction sheave. This gives the result of a flat disc shaped machine, which requires less space, fitting easily into the machine-room, saving space and reducing both the structural and electrical loading in the process. Although KONE EcoDisc will not solve every space problem, its smaller size and weight is as little as half that of traditional hoisting machines. As a result, installing the KONE EcoDisc can often release space previously allocated to the machine-room, creating all important additional floor space, that office managers are looking for.
Conventional Machine-room space
EcoDisc Machine-room space ®
KONE EcoDisc ®
Increased efficiency In lower speed applications, the gearless KONE EcoDisc machine will replace geared traction and hydraulic units, thus eliminating both mechanical gear losses and hydraulic losses. The synchronous permanent magnet motor of the KONE EcoDisc will also remove the electrical losses caused by motor slip and rotor magnetizing losses. In higher speed applications, where gearless hoisting units are already used, reductions in electrical loss are
the main area of saving with the KONE EcoDisc machine. This is mainly achieved because of the very high power factor due to the permanent magnet design, together with zero slip losses. Typical KONE EcoDisc energy savings: ■ Up to 60% against hydraulic elevators ■ Up to 50% against AC geared units ■ Up to 35% against AC gearless units ®
These impressive savings will reduce the machine room riser capacity requirements, emergency power generators and fuses. The lower thermal losses also result in reduced requirements for machine-room air-conditioning.
