Introduction Carl Jung was a pioneer mapmaker. Not satisfied merely to be the student of Freud, he integrated Freud's teachings on dreams and sexuality and ventured further into new and uncharted territories, into the deepest, darkest corners of the human psyche. ere, Jung uncovered the collective unconscious. unconscious. !his mysterious place seemed to carry imprints from every human being who ever lived, akin to being the psychological "N# of humanity. humanity. !herein he discovered archetypes. archetypes. !he $reek tapped into the archetypal when they created%discovered their pantheon. &tories of eus, era, (rometheus, ermes, "emeter, "e meter, and (ersephone reverberate in our culture even today. "espite its undeniable psychological genius, the $reek pantheon pales in number and diversity compared with the myriad archetypes that can be said to exist. #s our civili)ation evolves and human evolution brings new lifestyles, careers and technologies into being, myriad individuals make fresh psychological deposits to the collective unconscious. New archetypes arise. owever, some archetypes are so primal, so all*encompassing, that they seem to form the bedrock of archetypal potential. !hey are ori!inal archetypes, archetypes, ones out of which other types emerge. !he archetypes we will examine were discovered by +obert oore and oore and "ouglas $illette. !hey found that, at the most basic level, there exists only four archetypes, which they proceeded to place in an archetypal mandala. mandala. # mandala is a -uadrated map of the cosmos both the micro and the macro found in all ancient cultures. !he human mind seems drawn to the number four, be it related to directions, elements or -uadrants of reality reali ty.. !his archetypal system aligns with that ancient tradition. #ny mandala has in its center a focal point. /t may be a castle, a throne or a sacred mountain. /n the human psyche, this center point is the archetypal &overeign. (alachakra mandala) mandala) The *uadrated 0e will now investigate this &overeign and the cosmos with the castle at its center. archetypes that make up his mythological royal court. !he mythological world of symbols we are venturing into have inspired countless movies and novels. !hus, archetypes are something we can all relate to, be it through The %ord of the &in!s or Star Star 'ars. 'ars . !his document will give you new insight into your own interior cosmos, your inner iddle 1arth, and will show you how this, far from being about imagined worlds in mythical lands, tells real stories about real people. !his is about your life. 0elcome to the archetypal world of &overeign, 0arrior, 0arrior, agician, 2over.
The interior structure of the archetypes Mature archetype 5integration of active and passive shadow6
1go development Active shadow 5too much archetypal energy6
Passive shadow 5too little archetypal energy6
The bipolar shadow of the archetypes /magine a balloon. 0ithout air, it's a limp piece of rubber. #s balloons go, it's a bit crap. !ired of my crappy balloon, / inflate it. Now it's over*inflated. !he rubber is stretched3 it won't take much to make it pop. / inflate it a little more. !he balloon bursts. / become sad. / find a new balloon and start over. !his is a simple metaphor, but it illustrates an important point4 !oo much air or too little air are both unbalanced states. !he balloon fulfills its balloon potential most perfectly when it has the right amount of air inside, when it doesn't explode 5active shadow6 or implode 5passive shadow6. #s individuals, most of us are caught in this pendulum swing between 7too much8 and 7too little8. 0e try to find the perfect balance, but it seems so hard9 0e self*help ourselves to exhaustion and still find ourselves trapped in the same back and forth. 0e end up frustrated. ow can this dynamic show up in our lives: #fter a lifetime of failing to protect my boundaries and of experiencing the self*loathing that comes with being a pushover, / one day say enou!h+ / learn to set boundaries and say 7no8. ;ut all of a sudden, / see threats everywhere. / get cross with people. / feel angry. y life fills with conflict. #nd thus / end up moving from being trapped by the passive shadow of the 0arrior archetype 5the asochist6 to being trapped by the active shadow 5the &adist6. (eople who have been through a rebellion against their parents may nod their heads in recognition. /n my enthusiasm to 7repair my life8, / don't recogni)e that the two polarities are different expressions of the same problem. &imilar dynamics play out in our lives all the time, be they over time or within the same single moment. #ll human beings are affected and until the day our egos are <==> mature and integrated, a day which for most of us never arrives, we won't escape. !he intention behind this document is to make easily accessible this archetypal map, so that you get to familiari)e yourself with the enormous forces that control you from the murky depths of 7below8. !his, in turn, helps you deal with the awesome power of the archetypes in ways that are life*affirming and energi)ing. ;ut before we start to look at the archetypes, let's clarify a few concepts and terms.
The function of the ego !he ego may be one of the human psyche's most misunderstood structures. (hrases like 7/ want to get rid of my ego8 or 7he's got too much ego8 have become common, based, it seems, on 0estern misappropriations of the 1astern concept of Anatman 5no*self6. !his archetypal system shows us that such statements are based on a misunderstanding of what the ego is. / can't have 7too much ego8. ;ut / can have an immature ego, which is not fit to function as a healthy channel for archetypal energy. /n other words, what / can have too much or indeed too little of is archetypal energy3 / become trapped in the archetypal shadow. 0hen we think we experience the absence of ego, we are in reality experiencing the presence of mature e!o. # mature e!o doesn't ?udge 5it discerns6, doesn't pro?ect 5it sees6, doesn't get trapped in emotional triggers 5it knows itself6. /t functions as a finely tuned filter for archetypal energy, so that the amount that sifts through from the collective unconscious is ?ust right. !his is why ego development is related to the ascending arrow on the diagram above3 only with a growth in ego maturity do we leave archetypal shadow behind and fulfill our human potential. # healthy ego is a re-uirement for psychological maturity. #ttempts to 7kill the ego8 risk taking us far into archetypal shadow, which many spiritual groups and practitioners are examples of.
The tension arcs of the archetypes #mong the archetypes, we find polarity pairs. !hese pairs exchange a particularly powerful psychological energy and the dance between them are a paradoxical dance of opposites blending into a higher synthesis. 1.g. the 0arrior's desire for healthy boundaries and his ability to protect them combined with the 2over's desire for merging with @ther represent one of these paradoxes. !his is a complex topic, one which oore and $illette have not written about in length. / have my own personal experience with them, however, and so, /'m sure, do you.
Child archetypes and adult archetypes !he &overeign, 0arrior, agician, 2over archetypes develop in adulthood. !he psychological energy they represent grows out of corresponding child archetypes. /n order of correspondence, these are the ,ivine hild , the ero, the /recocious child and the edipal child . #s opposed to the archetypes of adulthood, we move through the archetypes of childhood in a linear se-uence. 0e start life as the "ivine Child, move into the domain of the (recocious child before we end up in the ero by way of the @edipal Child. !his is clearly a simplification of a complex reality and there may also be differences between men and women here 5this system is developed for the masculine psyche, but since all women have an inner man, an animus, it's relevant also for them6.
Gateway emotions 1ach archetype is connected to a gateway emotion. !his teaching is not part of +obert oore and "ouglas $illette's original work, but it's utili)ed with success in organi)ations like !he ankind (ro?ect. !he gateway emotions are the same as those we call 7primary emotions8. # primary emotion is a bedrock emotion which cannot be described as a combination of other emotions. The primary emotions are: Joy, anger, fear and grief 5this is supported by science6. !hese are gateway emotions to archetypal energy. !he more we develop a healthy relationship with these emotions, the more in touch we are with the corresponding archetypes.
#dditionally, each archetype has its uni-ue version of shame. "ifferent people teach this in different ways, so please don't consider my version as literal truth. ake this material your own.
