D R AW I N G P R O G R A M Head Drawing Phase II: Basic Head Construction—Cast Drawing Female
OVERVIEW Things you will learn: As with the male cast drawing, the goal of this exercise is to cultivate a drawing procedure using controlled subjects. You will want to ideally do these drawings from a three-dimensional cast. This can be difficult. If you can’t obtain one, I am very confident drawing from the main photo as well as supplemental ones will prove more than sufficient. For my students, the cast phase of training does not last as long as some atelier programs. It is simply a stepping stone towards “comparative measurement.” We want to be careful it does not become a crutch.

ASSIGNMENT 7: BASIC HEAD CONSTRUCTION–CAST DRAWING FEMALE
Part 1: Watch the video tutorials. Part 2: Print out the handouts of both the drawing phases and photo of the bust. Part 3: Copy the photo using my drawing as the guide. 1) Lay-in: In the cast exercises, you are actually doing a pseudo cast drawing. The obvious limitation would be nearly an impossibility getting everyone to acquire the same cast. The procedure is the same, though. 2) Mapping: When mapping the female, you will need to rely less on the abstraction and more on guessing angles and looking at negative and positive shapes. They are more subtle than the male head and can sometimes be harder to draw. 3) Middle value: As with the male head, you will now introduce your middle value into the map from stage 2. Part 4: I have provided several supplemental cast photos to draw from. I would recommend doing all of these as you work towards acquiring an actual bust to work from. If you live close to a notable museum, it is often easy to obtain permission to go in and copy from their cast collection.

- TIP I would employ the use of angles and negative/positive shapes to help navigate the subtlety of the female cast. The abstraction can be used but will not be as helpful.
- TIP Take your time. I would say three hours to get to the “middle value” phase should be sufficient. I have never subscribed to the lengthy approach some schools of thought put on cast studies. Use your own discretion. We want you to stay engaged, not burn out!

- TIP The first objective is to lay down a linear block-in of the cast. Use simplified lines to determine the placement and overall gesture of the cast.

- TIP Female heads will most likely have significantly less detail. I have combined the “mapping” and value 5 insertion in this phase. We will take them to full value later. If you are more advanced, you can insert a “black” note and bring the drawing up to a full-value finish.
