SUCCESSION
PROF. BALANE Block III-A
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.2 Textbook/Materials Needed - Jottings and Jurisprudence in Civil Law (Succession) by Balane - A2015 reviewer - CHAMP reviewer - RAM reviewer - Cases (often, you just need to read his summary in the book, unless the case is not in it) - Civil Code (required) Professor’s Teaching Style - Very methodical, concise and clear. - After midterms, recits are rare and he mostly just lectures. - Reciiiiit. Super galing niya what is mastery of the subject. Mabilis maasar pag mabagal sumagot. - Clean table recits. You're allowed to have all your notes/gadgets during discussion but once you get called you have to put away everything. - He expects you to memorize important provisions of the Civl Code verbatim. - For cases, you have to know the central issue of the case. He is very particular with this and if you give the wrong issue he can get a bit impatient. - He gives a midterm quiz which is easy and usually boosts people's grades up. - His final exam consists of questions wherein you have to compute the legitimes of the heirs. It can get tricky. - He's easily one of the best professors in UP Law - You are required to memorize certain provisions verbatim (minimum requirement) and sometimes pag mahaba yung provisions like Art. 805) marecite mo lang yun ng perfect, perfect ka na sa recit. - Sobrang galing ni Sir. He usually starts with the history of everything. He can recite spanish/greek/russian (??) kahit na ano atang poem verbatim. Marami siyang side comments in class na malayo na sa topic pero super interesting nilang malaman.
Tips - Read the Champ reviewer andun lahat. - Just have to prepare well before each class. Memorize all the important provisions (which are usually marked in the reviewers), and be prepared to get called every meeting. - Practice how you recite cases. You have to be ON POINT with the particular issue. He hates it when you stray off topic. Don't recite unnecessary details. - Memorize certain provisions of the CC VERBATIM. Start memorizing Art. 805 (he'll ask around 3 students to recite that and give perfect points if you can recite it precisely) - Semi-blind na Sir so meron siyang magnifying glass parati. Tapos parating nawawala yung rubberband niya kahit nakakabit lang sa kamay niya. :)) Super adorable ni sir balane gusto ko magkastuff toy just like him haha <3 - Dapat yung beadle niyo lalaking pogi. Mahilig siya sa boys so make them sit in front. di masyado sa girls. - Mabagal magdiscuss si sir. and you can make it extra bagal pa. he loves history. he can recite yung buong royal blood line ng england in his sleep. haha! - Memorize verbatim his favorite provisions and know by heart reserva troncal. - Memorize codal provis na gusto niya. Have a bibo class! Pakain rin kayo haha
PROF. QUINTOS Block III-B
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.25 Textbook/Materials Needed - None. But I used Joemer Perez's outline. Nakatulong naman siya and mas madali intindihin provisions - I think Balane's book is a must regardless of who you have for Succession. Professor’s Teaching Style - Very chill - Minimal ang matututunan if hindi mag effort - Mababaw ang discussions - Chill siya but they say medyo less chill na siya now. Tips -
Impressionist Wag mag absent or mag miss ng recit. Natatandaan niya. Volunteer kayo kasi naalala rin niya mga nagvovolunteer May quizzes. Mahihirap quizzes pati exams. Memorize provisions na lang para mas madali ang buhay. Mahirap ang exams. Super hirap.
PROF. CONCEPCION Block III-C
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.75 Textbook/Materials Needed - Tolentino is his required text book, but I used Jottings and Jurisprudence on Succession by Balane, as well as the reviewer available sa Blessings. - His reviewer from blessings (Concepcion Magic Notes). - Sir will "require" you to read all books written about Succession but his favorite are Caguioa and JBL Reyes. If you want a student-friendly book, try Joemer Perez' book but that has never been referred to by Dean Danicon. - Joemer Perez outline as supplemental reading and as reviewer for the exam Professor’s Teaching Style - May recits but they don't really matter sa grade. Puro lecture, and sometimes he asks about the cases. He usually calls the people sitting infront so expect na if you're the person infront, dapat you're always prepared. Only codals were allowed sa table, so what we did was to print copies of the codals then place our notes there. There were also quizzes, mostly announced. Difficult finals exam. - Lecture style, but will call on people for the first month or so. Really good prof, you'll really learn. Classes are very enjoyable and he's very funny. However, he gives low grades (has a ceiling), and his final exam is extremely difficult. - One of the best teachers you will encounter. Magaling na siya, magaling pa sya magturo. - Codal only [no syllabus, scratch paper, etc]. You will have to write your notes on the codals. - He will require you to make handwritten digests to be passed before the finals. Finish them early. - Before, he usually just lectures and he seldom asks anyone to recite. Today, he still lectures in class but he will sometimes test the class and point to someone for recitation (not really graded). The person sitting next to that person will be asked to recite next and so on. - He sometimes skips cases but they will be asked in the exam so memorize case names and doctrines. Only recite impt parts; sometimes, he just needs the doctrine. - There are exercises in class and take home assignments. - For the exams, be very thorough because he wants all issues addressed. He gives points sparingly.
-
-
Mostly lecture type. He will just start with the first part of the syllabus and continue talking until class ends. Then he will pick up where he left off in the next meeting. He calls people to recite in the first part of the sem, but then towards mid and end of sem, it's just pure lecture. Recits are not graded tho. Quizzes - usually problem solving. Finals - SUPER LONG and SUPER HARD. Legit. mostly because the subject matter is difficult.
Tips - Study regularly and read the cases (preferably in the original, if you have the time). - Listen to his lectures, try not to fall asleep. - Read tolentino as your basic source of knowledge on Succession. - Take down notes in class because you'll learn a lot by listening. - Take note of the cases he mentions because they may appear in the exam. - DannyCon likes to discuss varying schools of thought on a certain topic, take note of the school of thought he prefers, or if he has a personal opinion. This is what you follow when answering his exam. - Memorize article 805 of the Civil Code on the requirements of a Holographic Will - He also likes to ask which one word in a codal provision you should remember or underline - Study his reviewer well. Study for class, even if you're tempted not to. Listen to him, because a lot of what he says goes into the exam. Study the computations, because he makes people compute in the finals. - Study for his class, do not become complacent. - Wag balat sibuyas. Masakit sya magsalita sa umpisa pero ganun talaga sya. Funny naman sya. - Intel from previous batch: He is a finalist. - Marami talaga matututunan so wag sayangin ang pagkakataon. Tanong lang ng tanong.
PROF. JOVEN Block III-Evening
Grade your professor. 3 1.5 - AVERAGE: 1.78 Textbook/Materials Needed - Cases lang - None. But Sir loves JBL Reyes and Balane. So Balane will be a good book. Professor’s Teaching Style - Relies on cases. - Does a recap of last week's discussion. - Sir is very efficient and systematic. He is able to finish all assigned cases for the day. He's also very strict about the facts of the case. His analysis is sometimes beyond the case so you really need to understand the cases. Tips - Not lax at all. - Study lessons from last week - Always have with you a Beda reviewer. IF you are called first, chances are, he'll ask a lot of questions on the topics discussed in the previous session. Answers are almost always in Beda reviewers. You also need to have a grasp of the codal. Before he jumps to a new topic, he always discusses the codal first. :) - Mataas siya magbigay ng grade. Huwag ka lang pala-absent. Walang excused sa kanya.
PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW
PROF. ROQUE Block III-A and III-C
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.1 Textbook/Materials Needed - Higgins, Problems and Process - Brownie, Principles of International Law - A2015 reviewer and C2015 reviewer - Karichi reviewer - Introduction to Public International Law (Bernas) - Roque notes (Blessings) - Sir’s blog Professor’s Teaching Style - Knows his stuff. Socratic, but does a lot of the talking if you feed him well. - Recit for cases are not fact-heavy. He's more into the case doctrine. - Recits. We had a mock moot court that took the place of some of our recits. He likes food (and dapat may excuse kayo everytime bakit may food for everyone, like birthday ng blockmate, etc, di pwede na because of him), but he hated our block kasi we never gave him that much food (we only gave him a small cupcake for his birthday lol). He's moody. - Focuses on specific details during recitation. Doesn't mind if people use digests, but gets annoyed if the digests are incomplete and the class can't answer. - He was always absent. He's very particular about the cases although it's pretty much impossible to read them because they're too long. - Discusses cases in groups, usually with a framework for each topic and which determines the kind of questions he asks about the case. Know how to compare the decisions of different cases, and don't forget landmark cases. - Be ready to skip cases as well (kahit na ang tagal mong binabasa yun huhu). - Sometimes he will ask for powerpoint presentations which count as recit as well. - Grade is based on recit and finals. He does not count the MCQ. - May volunteer reporting. - Recit every meeting (walang rounds). - Mahilig sa current events. - Finals lang na sobrang hirap ang exam. Iyong sa amin, tungkol sa pag invade ng Russia. Lahat ng tanong dun lang umikot.
Tips - Digests will suffice. Have excellent digests. Do not settle for mediocre digests. - Case digests are fine. The Roque Notes will keep you alive. Just make sure that at least one person in class read the whole case or a longer case digest. He sometimes asks facts that are not in the Roque Notes. He likes humor. The class can get by if there's one person in class who can make him laugh all the time. - He gives good grades. Takes into account the recits, so do well in recits. Keep him happy with the class in general. - Intel by previous batches: Read Karichi first then the case digests. For those with effectivites, list down relevant facts in bulletpoints. Sir won't ask you to recite in the normal way - facts, issue, ratio. He wants it presented in the same way as they present in moot courts (ask moot court people) - [To first time readers of international cases] For ICJ cases and for those who want to read the originals, read the reviewers first, then the summary (also in ICJ website), and then the full case . If you want to know the important parts relevant to the topics, refer to foreign books [2nd flr lib] like Henkin and Harris which have digests of certain cases. - You may download ICJ cases from their website. This is in pdf form and is written in English and French on alternating pages. You may want to download .doc files without the French translation from other sites (ie. HeinOnline - available thru Dilnet/lib, JSTOR - Dilnet/lib, Justis - free trial). I suggest you do the latter because this will lessen the number of pages considerably and will aid those who will digest. - Most cases are long but at the very least read the delimitation cases in the original if you really want to understand delimitation because they have illustrations. Note however that Sir often makes the class report this. - For ILM and other cases, look for the cases in the above cited websites. In any case, Block D 2016 has a soft copy of the cases in Sir's syllabus and you may contact anyone for a copy. - Do well in the final exams and always keep Sir in a good mood. - Bawal siya magutom. Kasabay namin siya mag dinner kasi 6pm to 9pm iyong class once a week. - Gusto niya yung mga nagvo volunteer sa moot, reporting, recit. - Focus niya is UNCLOS. - He likes good speakers. - He can be tactless with his comments, but I suppose it's nothing personal.
PROF. MAGALLONA Block III-D
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.06 Textbook/Materials Needed - His book on PIL - Read the cases in his syllabus. Wikipedia can help. :) - His primer on treaties Professor’s Teaching Style - Recits - Appreciates/ prefers opinions contrary to the court's - Does not bring classcards but he knows where each one is seated - Magaling pero paulit-ulit - Focuses on just a select number of cases and topics. Particularly, sources of law, and subjects of international law. - Medyo sabaw. There's no other way I can put it. - There's no way you can get the upper hand in a recit. Just try to survive. - You'll only really take up some of the cases in detail (but in ridiculous detail -- we spent almost a month on one case), but he makes reference to the other cases in the syllabus. It might be good to have reference digests in case, just so you can follow his questions. - Papers and a take-home final exam form a large part of your grade. No idea how he grades papers, but he has a 1.75-4.00 range for those. 4.00 = rewrite. - Mabagal. The same topic/case is discussed for 3-5 meetings. And it's hard to anticipate the questions he might ask. Also, lumalapit sya sa person na nagrerecite, mej scary haha. Tips - Prepare to submit handwritten essays - No midterms; final exam take home to be submitted the next morning handwritten - Did not flunk anyone from the class - May Magallona reviewer sa blessings - His book is useful for recits. - Have a lot of patience. - Don't miss class, he remembers if you do. If he asks the class to submit an "essay" on a topic, it means "paper" na legit, with sources, footnotes, etc., hindi lang feelings :/
TAXATION 1
PROF. SALVADOR Block III-A
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.2 Textbook/Materials Needed - Codal, BIR issuances (RR's, etc) - some used Mamalateo - Ingles reviewer Professor’s Teaching Style - His lectures are not structured. He doesn't really teach the basics and expects you to know certain concepts from the start. - He asks really random questions for recits sometimes that aren't completely related to the assigned topic. - I don't think he grades recits. I got called 5 times during the semester and was not able to say a single word in any of them but still got a relatively good final grade. I think his sole basis for the final grade is the final exam. - You have to know the basics because he won't bother teaching that - Concentrates more on the difficult questions/rationale than the fundamentals (he's actually a very insightful teacher but not very bar-friendly I guess?) - Parang sumabak ka sa gyera na wala kang weapons. Sir will not discuss the basics. First day of class may recit na agad. (pero we think na nonbearing yung recits) Mahilig siya sa mga exercises on tax avoidance. Board work mostly na nakay Ingles. - Mabilis siyang magdiscuss. Be prepared for the first two pages ng syllabus on your first day. Baliw diba? - Magulo super hindi mo alam what to study for that day. - Lecture na biglang may recit. Tips - Read and master the Ingles reviewer. It's all you need to pass his final exam. - If he singles you out and gives you a homework, BETTER DO IT AND DO IT WELL because he normally doesn't grade recits (I think) but wouldn't hesitate to give you a 5 if you don't take the homework seriously - Don't be absent, if possible... or you'll be his "favorite". - Ingles saved us. - Mej walang concept of personal space si sir so nakakaooff paminsan. - Use samplex nag-uulit si sir ng questions. Fair naman yung exams usually kung ano lang yung diniscuss. Meron siyang powerpoint but hindi niya binibigay sa students niya.
PROF. LUCENARIO Block III-B
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.5 Textbook/Materials Needed - Valencia (All your problems come from Valencia) - Handouts (she’ll provide them) Professor’s Teaching Style - Magulo si maam but sobrang bait. Just listen to her lectures and yung examples niya most likely yun din ang exam. - Kanya kanyang aral ito. Walang matututunan sa lectures masyado. - Rely siya sa handouts niya. - She gives you free handouts from different authors and books, so why buy Domondon or Dimaampao or Vitug or Mamalateo when Valencia is all you really need? - Exams every month, or depending on your pace. If sluggish, you'll probably have three exams for the whole sem. - Boring. Most students just sleep in class. Darts grade, but the top ten get good ones. Our grades ranged from 1.5-2.5 as lowest. I never passed a Lucy exam (9/35-ish scores) but I got 2.25. - She's really nice. Lumelevel kay Lumba sa kabaitan. Tips - Read valencia! and be good to her since sobrang bait niya. - Chill lang siya at mataas magbigay. - Basa lang kayo handouts at valencia. - Hindi namin masyado binuksan ang tax code.
PROF. LAFORTEZA Block III-C
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.95 Textbook/Materials Needed - Mamalateo, but many of us used De Leon. - Ingles book or notes - Any tax book which can guide you with the basics. - De leon fundamentals of taxation - De leon income taxation - Beda reviewer Professor’s Teaching Style - Recits. Sorry, did not like this class so much. Midterms was MCQ na right minus wrong, finals was computation. She asked us to make an outline of the rates. - Very complicated. - Did not learn anything. She can't teach. - Case heavy syllabus. Recits are mostly on cases (na minsan, 2 lines lang ang related sa tax) - Make your recits counts because this is a big part of the grade. You will probably recite only 1 or 2 times the entire sem. - She gets distracted so she can start talking about Corpo stuff which you will not get. - Don't be fooled by her cute demeanor. haha, she failed a few people in the block. - Makes students recite for a long period. So if there are a lot of you, a student will only get to recite about twice or thrice in the whole sem. However, she grades students really low in recits, especially when people read while reciting. She's okay, needs a lot of focus but you can learn from her if you study before class. Gives out the whole range of grades, and if you study well you can get a high grade. - Accounting-style. - You will have a hard time if you have no background in accounting - Mej sabaw. - She's very detailed. If you recite a case, try to discuss all the issues related to taxation. - She likes to discuss in detail topics which are yet to be discussed so you may get confused. Take note of what she says because she will state the same when you get to that topic but don't be confused. - She grades higher if you don't look at your notes and recite from memory.
-
She will ask you to make an outline of tax rates to be passed during the final exams. She likes to make difficult exams. Try to get on her good side.
Tips - Study on your own. Sa class namin, she focused on concepts, but our finals was biglang computation. Memorize rates! - Study extra hard if you're planning to volunteer for recits. She will spend a lot of time on the fundamentals part. Very difficult finals (accounting-like exam). She likes tea and bananas. - Make sure you study tax on your own, apart from attending and complying with the assignments for class. - Her midterm exam was purely true or false, right minus wrong - coverage was fundamantals of tax, her finals was made up of 2 long fact patterns with subquestions. - Try to recite without looking at notes. Study well, and try to memorize rates because they come up frequently in the recits, and you might need to memorize for the finals. Our final exam was pure computation, so prepare for that. We also had no codigo for the rates (even though she had us write them). - Read De Leon. - For Funda, De Leon's book is a-okay. - For Income Taxation, read undergrad books to understand the basics and to know how to compute. Then read Micky Ingles to get a student friendly discussion. After that, read De Leon's Law on Income Taxation. The latter has relevant provisions of the IRR, BIR Rulings and Revenue Regulations in textbook form so read that. The Tax Beda Mem Aid Reviewer also has updated rates and Rulings and is also a great reference.
PROF. LORIEGA Block III-D
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.29 Textbook/Materials Needed - NIRC - De leon fundamentals of taxation - De leon income taxation - Mamalateo - Vitug books - Calculator Professor’s Teaching Style - Chill. - Madaming tips. - Semi-voluntary recits for cases after the midterms (you assign them beforehand). Excellent lecturer. - Lectures on the income taxation part. Reads from the text, but stresses certain points (either it's a practice area, a favorite topic, or a frequent bar question). - Very fair with the grading, but you have to pass the finals. Tax 1 is not hard to get, just study well and remember what she bears heard on. - Tricky exams, but it's all there in the code. - Love love love Ma'am Loriega. She's very systematic with how she teaches tax especially when it comes to computation. She gives sample problems then gives you seatwork to see if you get the concept. Mabait. Very mabait. Not to mention super smart. - Lecture. Voluntary recits pero minsan nagtatawag sya randomly (bihira lang though). Tips - Assign the cases and the person assigned should know the case well. Focus lang sa tax issue para di hassle.

Assigned cases iyong recit so dapat imemorize mo na iyong case mo. Maiinis siya pag tumitingin sa notes ang nagrerecite. Sobrang bait. Mataas magbigay ng grade Listen to everything she says. Everything. Practice your Math because she likes her computations. Watch what she stresses or has practice problems for as she's bound to have questions on those in the exams. Voluntary ang recit sa cases so decide who recites on which case. Maging bibo sa class niya. Aralin ang kanyang sample problems and your seatwork especially for the exams. Read De Leon, and keep track of the revenue regulations/memorandum orders that have superseded provisions in the codal. Don't worry if hindi naintindihan ang provisions. Ma'am will explain anyway. But at least try to read kahit papano.
NEGOTIABLE INSTRUMENTS
PROF. QUEVEDO Block III-A and III-B Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.2 Textbook/Materials Needed - Campos - Cases - Codal Professor’s Teaching Style - No structure as to his lessons. He sometimes jumps to a chapter that he hasn't even assigned yet so just be prepared to get screwed over. - Recits are all about confidence. Even if you don't know the case, just look him in the eye and pretend you do. If he thinks you actually read the case he lets you sit down right away. Those who start off their recit bad will sometimes have to recite for more than an hour. - His final exam is extremely long. Ours took almost 5 hours to finish (with a pizza break in between). - Sobrang gulo ni sir magturo. Pati exam niya ganun. Paulit ulit mga lessons and patalon talon yung mga topics so confused kami sa coverage ng lesson. Usually tatapusin niya muna yung mga concepts then cases. Pero magulo talaga kasi hanggang sa last meeting binalikan pa rin namin yung first topic. - 40 cases assigned per meeting on average. - Darts sa grade. - Recit tapos wagas na lecture. Tips - Campos' book isn't the easiest book to understand so try to read other textbooks which are easier to read. For the final exam, just try to master the provisions of the code. - Basically have materials ready for like 3-4 chapters of the book because he jumps from one chapter to another - For exam, GO CODAL Don't believe that MCQ would only account for 5% (or whatever % you agree on) of the grade!!! In our case, it seemed to have accounted for 100% of our final grade. - Madaling mapagod si Sir kasi sumisigaw siya magturo. Parati rin siyang absent so maraming make up classes. Crazy sa haba finals namin. Super comprehensive, 18 items, na may 4 unrelated subquestions na may a-j subletters pa na may or may not be related.

-
Sabi niya may oral midterms daw siya pero never natuloy. Yung samin ang plan niya was to have it on the same day as the finals (kagulo diba) pero since 6 hours na kami nag-eexam hindi na tinuloy ni sir. Dapat yung beadle niyo malambing :) And impressionist pala si sir. Make sure na maganda yung first recit niya. Aim for a flower, kasi ganun siya maggrade (i think i saw a circle, a star, and a flower - kung ano man yan di ko alam haha) Negotiable instruments made easy by Abad made nego easier lol
PROF. DISINI Block III-C
Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.78 Textbook/Materials Needed - Campos (yun talaga, he follows the book). And he assigned additional cases. - C2015 Reviewer - Codal - Handwritten notes and digests Professor’s Teaching Style - Intimidating but more likely to tease people. He relies on Campos but assigns other cases. 70% recit, 20% final exam, 10% attendance. Sometimes he asks weird questions like questions that require looking at the table of contents for the answer. He prefers handwritten notes but you can have Campos and your codal out. - Campos is the only reference you need. If the case assigned is in Campos, you don't really need to read the case in the original because he never asked for facts/ratio which are not in Campos. He does not actually expect you to read the original cases if they're already in Campos. However, for some cases, you will have difficulty understanding them without reading the original because those in Campos are really cut and paste paragraphs. Discern. - You actually don't need the reviewers because everything you need to know is in Campos. However, these reviewers have Disini comments which you may consider in analyzing the case. Read them with caution because Sir may have changed his mind or his comments may have been lost in translation. - Much nicer than in Oblicon. You must know exactly what you're talking about or else he'll twist your words. - He has blunt, in-your-face comments on your recits. Final exam is difficult. - He asks a loooooot of hypothetical questions. Mabilis si Sir magsalita and mabilis dicussion so it's hard to keep up sometimes. - Lecture, recit. Sobrang bilis magtanong sa recit so dapat sagot ka agad. - Same as his oblicon style, but more merciful. - Quick recits as in sagot agad. Huwag ma-rattle. Read the cases he assigned. He skips cases sa Campos pero never ung mga inassign niya. - Recits. Be straight to the point sa recits. He doesn't allow digests, but he allows the book and codal. Hindi ko naintindihan finals nya, lol. And he didn't count the mcq in our case.
Tips - Mag-volunteer for recitation during the last day, blanket uno un. - Always ask yourself what is wrong with the case. He likes alternative views. - Wag umupo sa harap kasi nakakatakot siya minsan. Sobrang bait at mataas mag grade. Pag nagpa volunteer siya sa recit, mag volunteer ka. - Study the cases inside out, but more than anything understand the codal provisions. - Face you fears (haha). "Mabait" na sya sa third years, not as scary (daw) as in Oblicon. - You'll be forced to study for the semester due to fear, anyway, so just keep doing that. - Memorize §§1 and 52 of the NIL. - Do not use the same digests. He will check if they are yours. - Read Campos thoroughly. Minsan di siya maganda mag-digest, ugh. Mahirap ang Nego so study it well and learn how to trace where negotiable instruments go (not where broken hearts go, hahaha). Memorize Sec. 1 and 52 of the NIL. As in, know them by heart. - Recit is 70% so yan ang pangbawi mo. Mahirap kasi ang finals. Make perfect attendance because that can save your grade.
PROF. VASQUEZ Block III-D Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.83 Textbook/Materials Needed - Campos (required), De Leon (dagdag na lang) Professor’s Teaching Style - Mahirap recit ni sir. Closed notes and madalas malabo questions niya. - Recit heavy. Magrerecit kayo every session - Lahat ng nirerecite nasa Campos lang. Though sa iba ibang parts ng Campos makikita - Matuto naman kahit papaano. Basahin lang Campos at least twice. - Doctrine recits; facts not so important. - Has his own concepts and book in mind. Usually hates De Leon commentaries. If naipit ka sa recit and you don't know the answer, come up with your own and say your source is from Campos. Tips -
Read campos and master the provision. Kapag wala ng masabi, provision na lang! Mahirap recit pero kaya naman. Mawawala bad habits during recit Impressionist. Bumawi kapag na 5.0 Generous magbigay ng partial points Campos lang nang campos. Memorize provisions.
TRANSPORTATION LAW
PROF. VISTAN Block III-B and III-D Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.85 Textbook/Materials Needed - Cases - Vistan reviewer - Codals Professor’s Teaching Style - Lecture. Mas okay kung magtatanong kayo kasi mag eelaborate siya pag may nagtanong. - Very chill during recits. - Super bait. 1 case/person, a well-detailed digest is enough. Fair grades. Rounds. - When we had him, he was new to Transpo, but he has experience in Public Utilities and he's great in the part with Civil Law elements (common carriers, since he usually teaches Civil Law in the schools he taught prior to UP). He got better at tying things together at that point-- he might be better this time around now that he has more experience. - Exams are fair and comprehensive. - Ok lang. Know your provisions. Not into that much detail in cases. - He didn’t fail anyone. Tips - Drink coffee before class kasi sometimes nakakaantok and there are instances where feeling ko even si Sir is not interested in the subject hahaha - Makinig kay sir kasi magaling siya mag lecture. Nakaka antok lang. Sobrang bait. Medyo mahirap yung midterms namin pero iyong finals kayang aralin. - Take down notes. He often restates the rule and the important case doctrine.
PROF. CALICA Block III-C Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.95 Textbook/Materials Needed - He assigns cases. He patterned his outline after Agbayani, so some people used that reviewer. - Civil Code - Code of Commerce - Other special laws - Quimbo reviewer - C2015 Reviewer (Calica outline) - B2015 Reviewer (Other prof's outline but similar) Professor’s Teaching Style - Night classes, 'nuff said. Chill but probably TOO chill. Likes to ask about the tiny details to make sure you read the case in the original. Imposes rules at the beginning of the sem (e.g. no computerized materials on the table except codals) but is lax in enforcing them (you can get away with it). Likes to bounce a question from one student to another till he gets the answer he wants. - He will tackle the concepts first but you will never get to sit until you have recited a case, usually 1 case only but he will let you recite the next one if you're good. He is case-focused so be sure to give the correct doctrine. - If you don't know the answer, he will call another person to help you but he will get back to you. Remember the sequence by which you were called because usually, you will recite the case which corresponds to your number in said order. - He discussed the first part (common carriers) in detail because that's a Bar subject. - Super chill, funny. - Case heavy style of teaching. Concepts can be gleaned more from cases than from textbooks. Very kind prof. Gives good grades. - Chill professor but range of grades that he gives is low (2.25-2.5) - Socratic method, normal recit style. You know your answer is wrong if he calls another person while you're on deck. But he won't make you sit down naman immediately. - Exams are objective and easy if you study your civil code, special laws and cases well. - He starts the sem slow so by the last part of the sem, he'll ask people to make presentations to cover all the topics.
Tips - Chill lang, pero study regularly pa rin. - "Handwritten" notes. We just printed sa yellow paper with handwriting font. - Take note of the cases na he will highlight in class, most likely yun yung nasa exams nya. - Nothing of note. It's Transpo and Calica. This will probably be your easiest class of the sem. - Just study. Ang bait na nga niya nakakahiya naman. - Try not to fall asleep in his class. Night classes plus yung boses niya, nakakaantok. Don't try to bluff, he's class valedictorian and president, as well as a former PLJ editor, and therefore not easily fooled. - Sir arrives late in class but don't leave without his go signal. He dismisses on time so that's okay. - There's usually one person who gets called every meeting and there are some who were never called for recitation until they made such fact known to him. - He has no rounds so beware. Also, the person who always gets called in class is usually a sure 2 or higher.
PROF. QUIMBO Block III-Evening Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.25 Textbook/Materials Needed - Cases - Certain laws and conventions Professor’s Teaching Style - Eats up a bulk of the discussion - Randomly calls for recitation but almost always calls the same people - Very flamboyant - Grand manner lecture. Tips - Make sure to memorize case names - Follow his (very) short outline as it grounds you on the basics - Codal lang and the Quimbo notes. Ang hirap nya magpaexam though. ;)
EVIDENCE
PROF. SAN PEDRO Block III-A Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.88 Textbook/Materials Needed - None but I think most of us bought Riano's book. Reviewers are useful. - Regalado - Riano Professor’s Teaching Style - Straightforward and structured lectures. - Reciting cases is also straightforward. - He's a bit more particular with the provisions so master those before class. - Final exam is a mix of objective questions and hypothetical situations. - He likes to dissect ROC provisions - Likes asking for examples and making comparisons - Sir would not lead you to the right answer. - Straightforward si sir. Late siya most of the time and ang aga niyang magdismiss parati. - Chill. Tips - Just master the provisions and you'll be good. He's a chill prof. - Provisions are usually harder to recite than cases (digests mostly suffice); always prepare to give examples/compare stuff. - For exams, he made us answer questions with 1-sentence answers only - Crazy nung finals namin, 1 sentence answer!!!!! - Mahilig siya manghingi ng examples. - Chill prof. Study lang. - Kaya niyo yan. Super chill. Rounds naman.
PROF. AVENA Block III-B and III-D Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 1.59 Textbook/Materials Needed - Regalado (Basic book needed), Francisco (added knowledge for recit) - She bashes Riano. Professor’s Teaching Style - Her reputation precedes herself. - Mahirap recits. Usually 3 sessions long. - Crucial rin exams. May mga matataas sa recit na nadale sa exams. - Memorize provisions! - Avena is the BEST professor you will encounter in UP Law. The most taxing part is the preparation for class. - She will call you (but brownie points if voluntary), and ask you to recite for days. 3-4 days are ordinary. 2 days, you're lucky. - Memorize the codal. Know the cases by heart and be sure you can handle it when she tweaks the facts to apply various Rules on Evidence using different factual milieus. Tips - Memorize the code and master the cases. Yun lang, there is no other way. - Pag hindi niyo alam sagot, wag kayo magsalita. Request for more time to think. Basahin niyo cases in the original at least thrice. Super detailed ng mga tinatanong. - Memorize provisions. - No other advice but to STUDY. Don't bullshit her. She knows her stuff and if you anger her, well, better drop. - If she tells you, "You better drop", or "You're not learning anything", well follow her command as it came straight from the horse's mouth and you'll most probably already fail. Don't give slow answers, but make sure you think your stuff before you blurt it out.
PROF. DAROY-MORALES Block III-C Grade your professor. - AVERAGE: 2.63 Textbook/Materials Needed - None, but we used Riano. - In doubt, stick to the Rules of Court - No required textbook but you may consult certain books like Riano, Herrera and Regalado. Professor’s Teaching Style - Always tardy, makwento, doesn't stay on topic. - We like to joke that our Evidence Class is actually Intro to OLA. - She gives announced and surprise quizzes, assignments (ie. write draft forms, send & mail a letter to your classmate) and exercises. - She divided us into teams and required as to draft judicial affidavits and comments/opposition for different parties using an OLA case as our reference for the facts. She scrutinized these affidavits in class so draft good ones. - Ma'am has a lot of stories, but they're relevant. Has a lot of practical advice (actually a good primer for those wishing to do OLA). Gives a whole range of grades, from 1.5 to 5. She fails a few people or gives them 4.0. - She always comes to class late, but she checks attendance so be sure you're there when she is. - Master your rules on evidence, she will sometimes give quizzes - She also gives random assignments and always explores possibility of moot court. - Exams are okay, she gives midterms and finals. - Recits, lectures, assignments and quizzes. Tips -
It helps to regularly prepare for this class. Be open to learning and listening. Recite cases as if you're telling a story. The more theatrical, the better. Passive aggressive ang style. Don't act mayabang when you recite. Keep a low profile. Know your judicial affidavit rule. Study for the exams. Some questions in the exams are case-based. Also, she gives surprise quizzes every now and then, so prepare for class. Read the cases, don't contradict her, NEVER interrupt her while she's speaking. Keep her generally happy with the class. Listen to her. Never yawn in class, that's a sign of disrespect.
-
She hates bluffers so if you're not prepared to defend your point, don't pretend to know whatever she asks. She dislikes overconfidence. Use 'actually' or 'firstly' sparingly or better yet refrain from using them. Never use "you". Don't use phones in class or talk to your seatmate or whatever. Be attentive. Remember your GMC class. Don't point with your finger. Volunteer if she asks. It's actually an exciting class and Ma'am really wants us to learn. Study on your own. Read Riano.
