Ross:

Fred:

All my life.

Ross:

Is there any exception to this rule? For example, can you talk to your sister or a relative or someone you’ve been introduced to?

Fred:

Yes. I’ve been married a couple of times.

Ross:

Sorry. If you’ve been married, then you’ve talked to girls. So what happened with your wives? You were able to talk to them, weren’t you? The problem is they talk back.

Fred:

I did some ballroom dancing. This one girl was really cute. She introduced herself. I danced with her and she told me that she had ponies. I was like, “Oh, gosh.” A girl who’s cute and has ponies* I’m into horses too. I just felt so weak, I fell apart.

Ross:

When was this?

Fred:

Just a few weeks ago. I couldn’t even dance.

Ross:

How often does this kind of thing happen to you?

Fred:

I see the really pretty girls on the dance floor. I go dance with the fat ones first and work my way up to the pretty ones. Finally, [2:02 inaudible].

Ross:

The worst thing is when the fat ones reject you.

Do you talk to women outside of those contexts of talking to them in the ballroom?

Fred:

I’m a doctor, so I talk to people all day long.

Ross:

What kind of doctor?

Fred:

I’m a cardiologist and pain management.

Ross:

Do you ever see a beautiful female patient?

Fred:

Yeah.

Ross:

Are you afraid to talk to them?

Fred:

I talk to them, yes.

Ross:

But you’re not afraid of them?


Fred:

No.

Ross:

Why not?

Fred:

I’m not sure.

Ross:

Because you’re a doctor.

Fred:

It’s the context.

Ross:

Let’s say we go out to the mall together and I see some smoking hot, beautiful woman and I say, “Dr. Fred, go up and talk to her,” what would happen?

Fred:

Well, like you say, you start being pulled this way and being pulled that way with the voices in your head.

Ross:

You hear voices in your head? Have you done a rotation in psychiatry, Fred?

Fred:

No. But seriously, you’re telling yourself, “I’m too old, too short*”

Ross:

Christine, come here. Look at my face; look at her face. Is there any correlation between the two? No. Her face is much prettier than my face. She’s a 10. Charitably, I’m a 4 on a good day. Trust me: looks have nothing to do with it. Would you say Mullen is cute and a little bit younger than me? It doesn’t matter. When you get this stuff, it really doesn’t matter.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how nervous do you get?

Fred:

Almost as nervous as I am now.

Ross:

Are you nervous? Why?

Fred:

Being up in front of people.

Ross:

Let’s deal with that feeling of nervousness. Close your eyes for a minute and tune into that feeling of nervousness. Show me with your hands where you feel the nervousness.

Fred:

My shoulders and across here.

Ross:

We’re all looking at you. We’re all staring thinking you’re a fool. Tune into that feeling of nervousness. Don’t try to fight it. Don’t try to relax it. Just tune into the feeling and every 10 seconds I want you to say same or changing out loud.

Fred:

Changing*same*

Ross:

Fred:

Don’t try to change it. Don’t tense against it. Just let it be there.

Fred:

Ross:

You’re doing good. When it changed, in what way did it change? How did it change?

Fred:

Lighter. A little different locations.

Ross:

It moved to different locations. Did it change in intensity at all?

Fred:

Yeah.

Ross:

How did it change?

Fred:

I felt almost a little discomfort.

Ross:

We’re going to do it again. This time I want you to tune into it, but see if there’s any area of local intensity, if within the feeling of discomfort there’s one area that really has sharp discomfort. Try that.


Again, tune into it. For the first minute, same or changing. We’re all staring at you. Everyone here thinks you’re a fool. Same or changing?

Fred:

Changing*

Ross:

Don’t try to change it. By the way, you can relax around the feeling. Don’t try to relax the feeling, but relax everything around it. Same or changing? Bear with us if this seems a little boring. It’s important.

Fred:

Ross:

I want you to try something else. Keep tuning into the feeling as you listen to me speak. I want you to see if you can zoom your attention to the very border of the feeling. Since the feeling is in the body, there has to be a place where the feeling just about fades away. There’s a place where the feeling no longer reaches. See if you can extend and hold your attention on the border of the feeling, on the very edge of the feeling. Let the feeling be there, but now keep your attention on the very border of the feeling.

Now, with your attention on the very border of the feeling, every ten seconds same or changing.

Fred:

Ross:

Fred:

Changing*changing*I’m feeling something, but it’s not the anxiety.

Ross:

That’s right. It’s no longer anxiety. Exactly. Keep your attention there – at the very border of the feeling. At the edge of the feeling, same or changing.

Fred:

Changing*

Ross:

Keep your attention at the very edge of the feeling. Just hold onto that feeling. Now how do you describe it? It’s not anxiety. What would you call it?

Fred:

I’m feeling a little discomfort in my thigh and a little discomfort when I breathe deep here, but the anxiety is gone.

Ross:

On a scale of 1-10, what was it before when you first came up here?

Fred:

7 or 8.

Ross:

What is it now?

Fred:

Zero.


Ross:

So we just overcame your stage fright using this. Here’s the way this technique works. You tune into the feeling. You don’t fight it or try to change it and you don’t talk to yourself about it like “Oh, she’s going to hurt me” or “She hates me.” You’re just going to have the experience of the actual feeling in the body.

For the first two minutes, you’re just going to observe it and say same or changing. Then what you’re going to do is put your attention on the very edge of the feeling. Let me explain what that means. I’m going to unpack that for you.

I was at a meditation retreat. I’m swinging a little strap with a metal thing on it and I hit the tip of my finger. It fucking hurt and the pain radiated all the way up to my wrist – but it went no further than my wrist and no further than this finger.

I didn’t fight it. I put my attention on the edge of the feeling. I held my attention here, here, and here where the feeling just faded out. That’s where I put my attention. Do you understand what I mean now about the border of the feeling? When you have a headache, the headache doesn’t extend into your arm. There’s a border to every feeling.

For the next two minutes, you’re going to hold your attention on the border of the feeling. What you’ll almost always find is it begins to change. It ceases to be something that will stop you. A 10 is difficult to deal with. A 2 or 3 you can handle. It’s not that you’re super confident on stage and you can talk to 1,000 people. It’s just no longer crippling you.

You’re a cardiologist. To use a metaphor, it’s like having an artery that’s 99% blocked and one that’s maybe 10% blocked. There’s still a blockage, but it’s no longer pathological or going to cause necrosis to any of the tissues. A person is not going to throw an embolism or any of that. It’s the difference between a slightly irregular heartbeat in someone who’s [11:03 inaudible].

Here’s the key. When there’s discomfort in the body and you either try to repress it by tightening against it or you feed yourself a story about it, then you take a little flutter and you turn it into atrial fibrillation. If you can tune into it without fighting it and without feeding it with story and just be present with it and then put your attention on the very border of it, it will calm down and become something else that you can handle. Those are the keys.

When you bring your awareness and your permission for it to be there, when you take discomfort and you divide it by awareness and permission, the discomfort drastically reduces.

Notice what I’m not saying to you who have “approach anxiety”. I’m not saying I’m going to turn you into some super confident megastud who knows that bitches are dripping down their legs when you walk in the room. to the point where you can handle it. You’re going to do it, rather. You’re going to turn it from a 20 to a 2. You can handle a 2.

If someone ties a 100-pound weight around your leg, you’re going to have trouble running. But if they tie a 5-ounce weight, as long as you don’t trip, you’re going to be okay.

How do you feel standing on stage now?

Fred:

I feel at least 90% more confident.

Ross:

It’s okay being up here.

Fred:

Yes.

Ross:

Watch this. Tense up against the feeling. Tense your muscles, hold your breathing, and try to make any discomfort go away. Now talk to yourself about how it’s awful to be on stage and we’re all making fun of you in our minds.

Fred:

It came back.

Ross:

What is it now on a scale of 1-10?

Fred:

Maybe a 6.


Ross:

Isn’t that weird? Now stop fighting it. Tune into it. Pay attention to it and zoom out to the very border of the feeling and hold your attention the edge of the feeling. Close your eyes and hold your attention to the very edge of the feeling for about 20 seconds. Don’t try to make it go away. Don’t try to change it. Just hold your attention to the very edge of the feeling.

Same or changing?

Fred:

It’s changing.

Ross:

Yeah. Pretty quickly too.

Fred:

Yeah.

Ross:

Now where is it on a scale of 1-10?

Fred:

It went back to 2 again.

Ross:

Isn’t that weird? How long have you had this problem of stage fright and anxiety of being in front of people?

Fred:

All my life.

Ross:

How many years is that?


Fred:

I’m 59, so since I was a child.

Ross:

50 years?

Fred:

Yeah.

Ross:

How much time did we take to do that? 15 minutes versus 50 years. It’s a scale of something like 15,000 to 1.

The point is any experience when you bring awareness and you bring permission, then it ceases to be suffering. It may still be painful, but it’s no longer suffering. Suffering blocks you. Pain is just something you can walk over. Suffering is a stumbling block. Pain can be just a stepping stone.

If you can do this on stage in front of people in a matter of minutes and significantly handle something that had beaten you for 50 years, you can do it with anything.
