IndieBudgetBuddy Help Center FAQ Why does the Film Feet Calculator round some items up?
- Two reasons. 1 - The "Total Hours of Raw Footage" is rounded up because film transfers are calculated NOT on the hours of footage, but rather on how many hours it takes the telecine operator to do the transfer, which includes time loading and unloading the film reels. Rounding up helps cover this extra time to make sure you have a bit of contingency on your transfer costs. 2 - The "Total Reels" is rounded up because no negative n egative cutter will charge charge you for 6.5893625431 reels. But, they MAY charge you for 6.6 reels, or they may even round all the t he way up to 7. Again, this is simply to cover your butt for any situation.
What exactly is "contingency"?
- Contingency is the "Cover Your Butt" side of budgeting. In filmmaking, anything can happen, and when it does, it costs serious dough. The "Contingency" is designed to add a safety net to you r budget, so that just in case a terrible flood washes away your sets (See Lost in La Mancha for examples), you'll have some extra cash to keep the project alive.
Why are so many categories listed as "contingency" only?

You forgot rental on mics and an audio board! You nincompoop! - Again, not remotely. I own a shotgun mic, a sturdy boom pole, a portable field mixer, and plenty of XLR cable. ca ble. Again, buy your own! $400 will buy all the basics, or tack on an extra grand for a nice Lectrosonics wireless (a great addition to any sound kit.)
It's all nice and good, but I want to use the new V ision2 Kodak film. Can I change that? - Sure! Do whatever you want! This is your budget, b udget, so if you want to use the Vision2 or EXR Black & White, just replace any of the film stocks in Column A with your own, and change the corresponding price in Column C.
What's with the "Days*" columns? - These are there just in case you need something or someone for a longer or shorter time than the overall "Production Days." Entering a number of days in the "Days*" columns will cancel out the "Production Days" and "Prod. Days Alt" entries f or that item.
Why so few jobs in the "Crew" list? What about Line Producer and Focus Puller and Production Assistant?
- You want to pay your PA's? You're a nicer person than I am! No, just kidding. Those aren't on there because most extremely lowbudget films won't have them. Most extremely e xtremely low-budget

- The DVD Authoring price takes the estimated final running time from the Film Feet Calculator and compares it to the DiscMakers price for authoring and encoding. enc oding. The way it works in this situation is $590 for 90 minutes of video ($2 per minute over 90), and includes a Main Menu with up to 3 Sub-Menus, and up-to 25 chapter points. Discmakers also offers lower-cost encoding with fewer options, as-well-as custom encoding. Visit their site for more details. http://www.discmakers.com/ What does the DVD-R Duplication rate include?
- It all depends on how many you get. If you need a short run of less than 100 discs, d iscs, the price includes black thermal printing on the disc, and the discs come in simple paper sleeves. If you are ordering 100, DiscMakers has a special price of $650 that includes black thermal on-disc printing, and full-color covers in Amaray cases (the DVD cases that we're all used to.) For over 100 discs, the price reverts back to the black thermal on-disc printing with paper sleeves. There are more options that are not included in IndieBudgetBuddy (for instance, slimline jewel cases for a small ad ditional per-disc fee) that you can view on DiscMakers' duplication website. http://duplication.discmakers.com/ What do the "DVD-5 / DVD-9 Replication" costs include?
- With DVD-5 and DVD-9, the price includes the Glass Master (from which all discs are replicated), Amaray-style cases with Full-

- These are the most common DVD formats. The amount of video that each format can hold depends largely la rgely on the compression of the video. DVD-R is a Single-Sided, Single-Layer General-Use Recordable DVD that holds 4.7GB (4.7 "Gigs of Bytes," which actually translates to 4.34 GB of storage), or roughly 100-120 minutes of video. DVD-5 is also a single-sided, single-layer disc, and holds the same amount of information inf ormation as a DVD-R, but is a manufactured disc (it's much faster and cheaper to manufacture large numbers of DVD-5s than it is to burn large numbers of o f DVDRs.) DVD+R DL (burned) and DVD-9 (manufactured) are SingleSided, Dual-Layer discs which hold 8.5 GB (8.5 "Gigs of Bytes," which translates to 7.95 GB of storage), st orage), or roughly 200-220 minutes of video. Why does my film's Negative Cut require so many reels? I thought film reels were 2000 feet long!
- Release Prints use 2000-foot reels. Negative cuts, however, use 1000-foot reels. This is because the raw stock used for the optical sound track comes in 1200-foot rolls. Your final 35mm Release Print will be broken into 2000-foot reels, roughly 20-minutes each.
