IDEO Product Development Q 1.
Define the problem?
y
Sacrifice
innovation and design in order to meet the clients go al.
y
Time and
price pressure w as forcing IDEO to go with tried and true technology proposed
by Hawkins which would not be
able
to indulge IDEO to c arry out early phases of
development process which differenti ates IDEOs product from other development firms. y
They
had
a
time constraint in designing the product which would require them to byp ass
many of the early development stages that the firm was particul arly good at and at the end, deliver a product that could be much better if they h ad more time.
Q 2. y
Determine which inform ation is relevant and organize it into sep arate issue? The
goal of IDEO w as to come out with
a
fully compatible, slightly smaller and less expensive
palm size computer(visor) th at could easily add functionality over Palm V. y
Process usu ally
generated
a absurd appearing
but innovative ideas before the fin al
outcome. y
Prototyping was central to IDEOs design process, br ainstorming was central to methodology.
y
They
have to launch the product from prior deadline of spring 2000 to l ate 1999. This would
entail
a
product development cycle of about 10 months before handing off the product to
production in March- April 1999. Q 3.
Analyze the issue?
Ans. As visor is competing product on Palm V, its not possible to compromise on innov ation and brainstorming sessions with reg ard to the process. Time
is an issue bec ause risk of missing out v aluable market entry timing could cut profits or allow
competitors time to gain control of market and gain followers th at potentially would have been visors customers.
Q 4.
Formulate variable alternatives?
Ans.
IDEO h ad three alternatives with them to choose from with reg ard to visor:
1. As time w as
a
constraint, they could go for either the completely new process or cut down
some of the early phases in the process to meet the clients de adline. 2. Confining to the prior de adline of spring 2000. 3.
The
least feasible option was they could completely decline the project altogether.
Q5.
Evaluate the alternatives?
Ans.
As the process w as central to IDEOs product development, either
altering
the process or
bypassing the early development stages is quite ch allenging. As the prior deadline was spring 2000, the entire pl anning was done in order to rele ase the product accordingly and
its quite compromising to make the product available in the market with the new
deadline, March 1999. Completely declining the project will le ad to
a
negative impact on the long st anding image of the
company. They may lose a ma jor client and credibility of their commitment which m ay lead to loss of business from other clients as well.
Q6.
Make a decision? The
innovation
decision was to confine to the prior de adline of spring 2000 and not to compromise on and
design because IDEO is known for its innov ation, simplicity
and
creativity in the
product development which will work well with the consumers. IDEO is known for m aintaining balance between process and innovations meaning both are equally important. Altering the IDEOs innovation process may result in
a
product which could not meet the clients
and
consumers
expectations on qu ality and functionality.
