The Maserati Maserati GranCabrio GranCabrio uses a new genera generation tion of dual dual stage airbags airbags for for the driver and front passenger. These use a technology employed for the first time on the Quattroport Quattroporte e and then then incorpor incorporated ated on on the GranTuri GranTurismo. smo. The The system system is “intellige “intelligent” nt” - it adapts autonomously to the stature of the occupant and adjusts its deployment accordingly in case of collision. The passenger side airbag system with Low Risk Deployment function is the top-ofthe-range option in occupant protection and guarantees outstanding safety in all front collision scenarios. Along with its increased passive safety aspects, this new solution provides a significant improvement in the styling of the top panel of the passenger side dashboard, making it more linear with the airbag better integrated into the overall design of the interior. The GranCabrio is equipped equipped with a new type of of lateral airbags or side bags, bags, which are integrated in the front seats. seats. They are newly designed designed and offer protection to both the occupants head and torso. The use of this new type of side bag allows the elimination of the separate head bag in the door panels panels as used on the GranTurismo GranTurismo models. Note: side and frontal airbag activation is controlled by a separate strategy inside the NAB , they do not necessarily deploy together.

Roll Over Protection System (R.O.P.S.) All GranCabri GranCabrio o vehicles vehicles are as standard standard fitted fitted with a roll over protection protection system system (R.O.P.S.) under the form of an active roll bar. The system is hidden behind the head rests of the rear rear seats and and will deploy deploy in case case a roll roll over risk situation is identified. identified. Together with the reinforced windscreen frame will this offer the best possible passenger protection in the event of a roll over.
The system consists of two sliding struts in two drawer-like casings that extend in the vertical direction. Both casings are fixed to the vehicle chassis, behind the rear seat back rests. They are inclined 15° 15° backwards in order to aim at the rear window (with soft top in closed position). The rear window will break when the roll bars are activated, allowing them to fully extend. This is done so to provide the greatest possible safety for even the tallest rear passengers; if deployed towards the roof, the presence of the canopy would limit the extension of the roll-bars, thus reducing the margin of safety. The roll-bars deploy when the handling of the car makes an imminent roll probable, and also when the car suffers a side or rear collision of a certain force so that to prevent damage to the system the roll-bars are extended to deal with possible future emergencies.

The active roll bars are controlled by the airbag node (NAB) and and are triggered by means of a pyrotechnic release mechanism. A specific control logic inside the NAB will evaluate the the risk of a roll over and and activate the roll bars when when a certain vehicle vehicle roll angle is reached. The total activation time + extraction time of the system is less than 190 ms, which is far less than the time it takes a vehicle vehicle to roll around its own axis.
Extendable roll bar
Aluminium casing
Pyrotechnic charge
The extendable roll bar, when inserted in its casing, is loaded by a spring and locked by means of a locking pawl. When W hen activated, the pyrotechnic charge will release the locking pawl and the roll bar will extend by means of the spring force. During its extension, a mechanical no-return mechanism will lock the roll bar in the extended position. This will prevent the roll bar from being inserted by an external force, for example, if the vehicle hits the ground during a roll over. Both extendable roll bars are always activated together and need to be replaced after deployment.
Tungsten pin hidden beneath the plastic will break the rear window during deployment
In normal conditions, the extendable roll bar is covered by a plastic shield behind the rear head rests. The shield contains contains an integrated pin made of tungsten. The pin is not visible but is hidden beneath a pre-cut orifice in the plastic. It will protrude through the plastic in case of deployment and break the rear window the moment it hits it (in case the roof is closed). This is necessary to allow the roll bars to extend extend to their full length (281mm) and offer the best possible occupant protection in the event of a roll over.

Warnings and instructions for dealing with active roll bars The extendable roll bar as a service part comes with a protective cover which is fitted on top of it. This cover will prevent an accidental deployment of the roll bar during storage, handling or installing, causing possible injuries.
Protection cover Securing binder
CAUTION
In case of replacement of a roll bar, only remove the protective cover after having completed the installing in the vehicle.
The electrical connectors of the right hand side and the left hand side roll bars have a specific colour: •
Right hand side roll bar:
green connector
•
Left hand side roll bar:
blue connector
Make sure the correct position of each connector is respected!
CAUTION
CAUTION
Just as with airbag units, the vehicle’s battery must always be disconnected before removing or installing an extendable roll bar unit in the vehicle. Only reconnect the battery after the installing in the vehicle has been completed. In case an extendable roll bar drops on the ground during transportation, it must be returned to the supplier for verification. It must not be installed in the vehicle, even if no external signs of damage can be found.
Diagnostics The airbag node (NAB) will check the electrical continuity of the connector and the wiring harness of the roll bars. It will store a DTC in case a failure is detected. The right hand side and the left hand side active roll bar can be replaced individually in case of an error in the system.

Parking sensors: The significant significant size of the Maserati Maserati GranCabrio should not be cause cause for concern as the car is fitted with standard rear sensors built into the rear bumper which, combined with those fitted in the front (optional), assist when manoeuvring even in very tight spaces. The instrument panel shows the car surrounded by symbols indicating distances to obstacles (max/med/min). The symbols are lit up in 3 different colours according to the obstacle’s distance from the car: max-green, med-yellow, min-red; combined with acoustic warning signals.
Cruise control: When driving at a steady speed cruise control is particularly useful because it allows the set cruising speed to be maintained automatically without having to press the accelerator pedal. When the driver switches on the cruise control a special gearshift setting is automatically selected based on the slope of the road and calibrated to obtain the maximum comfort and to avoid unnecessary unnecessary gearshifts.

Maserati Maserati Multi Media Media System System
The info-te info-telema lematic tic system system on board board the Masera Maserati ti GranCabrio GranCabrio is derive derived d from the the new high-end high-end telematic telematic platform platform develope developed d by Magneti Magneti Marelli. Marelli. A 7" high-resolution colour TFT display in the centre of the dashboard dashboard allows viewing of the CD player, GPS navigation system (where cartography is available), radio and onboard computer (trip and car set-up information). The system’s performance is enhanced by the use of a 30 GB automotive hard disk drive that can host the whole cartography and offer the juke-box function in place of the CD changer. The hard-disk drive, on the one hand, significantly reduces the journey calculation times, and on the other provides storage for about 180 hours of music, which can be copied copied directly from Audio CDs CDs or downloaded downloaded in Mp3 file format through the USB port in the passenger side glove compartment. The system also allows you to use your own Mp3 player; in fact, most players on the market today can be connected through the USB port so that you can listen to your own music during the journey. As far as the GPS navigation system is concerned, the large colour display and a 3D graphics processor offer navigation with a very attractive perspective view. System System control control is easy and and intuitive intuitive through through the the controls controls in the centre centre of the dashboard, while while the most frequently used functions are accessed in complete safety through the buttons on the multi-function steering wheel; again from a safety standpoint, the audio system, navigation system and telephone (where fitted) can be operated without distracting the driver through a convenient voice command system. The "Text to Speech" voice synthesis system (artificial reproduction of the human voice) also contributes to user safety since it reads out SMS messages and TMC traffic information so that the driver is not distracted by having to look at the display. The Multi Media Media System includes bluetooth technology which allows allows a cell-phone cell-phone (made ready) to be connected. connected. Bose Surround Sound The system is available as an optional (std in USA and Canada). To help reproduce music with both power and clarity, the Bose Surround Sound System features two separate bass sources. The dual low-frequency sources are engineered to work with the entire surround sound system to faithfully reproduce music across a wide spectrum of frequenci f requencies. es. Conventional approaches to multiple bass sources can be problematic. If the speaker is located too close to the listener the sound can be overwhelming. If it is too far away the sound can lack fullness. Improper placement can also cause the multiple speakers to reproduce certain frequencies out of phase, effectively cancelling out the sound instead of strengthening it. Working closely with the Maserati development development team, Bose engineers engineers used a detailed detailed acoustic acoustic blueprin blueprintt of the Maserati GranCabr GranCabrio io cabin cabin to determine determine the proper speaker speakers s and mounting locations. They include custom-engineered enclosure with two Nd® Richbass Richbass® ® woo woofers fers mounte mounted d between between the the rear rear seats seats and and a Nd® Richbass® Richbass® woo woofer fer in a customised bass enclosure in the front, each powered by a single two-state modulation amplifier. The Nd Richbass Richbass woof woofer er combines combines the lighter lighter weight weight and power power of a neodymium neodymium iron boron magnet with a design that enables it to produce the low-frequency output of a much larger, heavier speaker. It is housed in a customised enclosure placed unobtrusively behind the passenger side foot well. These specific speakers and locations were key to delivering low-frequency sound more evenly, providing more musical impact and preserving vehicle space. AudioPilot® Noise Compensation Compensation Circuitry: Circuitry: The Bose Surround Sound Sound System System includes AudioPilot noise compensation compensation circuitry, circuitry, which features an algorithm customised for the acoustic profile of the Maserati GranCabrio cabin. It helps preserve preserve the high-quality high-quality listening experience experience inside inside the vehicle by compensating for speed-related noise, as well as outside sound unrelated to vehicle speed. speed. The AudioPilot AudioPilot system provides a wide range of compensation compensation quickly and can better differentiate between sustained noise and short transient noise caused by speed bumps and other abrupt changes in road surface. This compensation is done automatically so that the perceived sound level and tonal balance remain consistent. With this, the driver can focus on the road and enjoy a listening experience closer to what the musical artist intended. The Bose Bose surround surround sound sound system system in the Maserati Maserati GranCabrio GranCabrio is powered powered by a Bose digital digital amplifier amplifier that includ includes es Centerp Centerpoint® oint® and Surrou SurroundSt ndStage® age® signal signal process processing ing circuitry, and eight channels of custom equalisation. Roof structure The top’s frame is composed of 5 steel and aluminium spokes which support the 1,820mm x 1,480mm (approximate figures) of the fabric. The top has an integral tempered thermal glass rear window which makes the car just as drivable in all seasons. The style of the three-layer soft top has been optimised for aerodynamic and acoustic performance, just as the insulation materials and construction offer the best comfort when driving that current technologies can provide. The top has been subjected to extended rigorous testing in the most inhospitable and inaccessible corners of the world and in all weathers to ensure a long service life (e.g.: New Zealand for testing t esting at a t -20°C, -20°C, Sicily Si cily for fo r 40°C, 40°C, Sweden for -30 °C). °C).

Roof closing cycle step by step
When the NCP receives a roof closing request from the driver, it will only proceed if all conditions for roof movement are met. The NCP subsequently sends a command signal to the NPG and the NPP to lower both front windows (if closed).
When the front windows are completely open, the NCP will lower both rear side windows (if closed).
Both tonneau tonneau cover cylinders cylinders extend extend to unlatch unlatch and open open the tonneau tonneau cover.
Both main cylinders retract to lift the roof out of its stowage space.
While While the the roof roof unfolds unfolds,, the bowden bowden cables cables attached to the roof structure that kept the Cpillar flaps stretched will release. The C-pillar flaps fold down by the force of their spring.

The main cylinders are completely retracted and the C-pillar flaps folded down.
The tonneau cover cylinders cylinders retract retract to close and latch the tonneau tonneau cover.
The tension bow cylinders extend. This stretches the front part of the roof and lowers the rear part of the roof.
The tension bow cylinders are fully extended. Now the electrical front latch mechanism takes over to lower the front part of the roof towards the windscreen frame. This movement tensions the complete roof. The front part of the roof latches to the windscreen frame.
A beep confirms that the roof is completely closed. If the driver continues to hold the button also the side windows will close. The NCP first closes the rear side windows.

An NTC resistor is built into the hydraulic pump motor so the software can monitor what temperature the pump motor operates at. A thermal counter is implemented in the software, after a defined time of operation the pump motor and the PCB have to cool down for a defined time before the next operation can can start. The NCP can can only go to Roof Sleep Sleep mode when the thermal counter has reached zero.
Vehicle speed monitoring To protect the roof system, the vehicle speed will be monitored by the NCP during roof opening, during roof closing, in stop-mode and in manual mode. Depending on the velocity, the driver will be informed by several acoustical and optical warnings. •
To start start a new new hood hood operatio operation, n, the velocity velocity must must be below below 30 km/h. km/h. If the the velocity velocity exceeds 30 km/h, the hood operation will be stopped. The operator has to reduce the vehicle speed below 30 km/h and reactivate the roof operation demand to continue the hood operation.
•
In case case of of exceedi exceeding ng th the e 50 km/h, km/h, a DTC DTC will will be stored stored into into the the error error memory. memory. Additional to the DTC the relevant sensor information is stored.

Driver commands: Push buttons on the drivers door to operate the left and right rear window lifters. These interrupters form an integral part of the driver’s door node (NPG). The window open /close commands are sent by the NPG to the NCP via via the B-CAN line. A push button to operate the soft top is located on the central console. Two contacts provide each an active low signal to the soft top node (NCP). When the user releases the button during operation, the roof will stop moving.

Inputs / sensors An NTC resistor is integrated in the hydraulic pump unit to measure in which temperature area the pump motor is working. This is used to protect the motor from damage due to overheating. A double micro-switch is used to measure the position of the the tonneau tonneau cover. The tonneau cover latch open is activated when when the tonneau cover enters enters the striker during closing; closing; the the tonneau tonneau cover cover latch latch closed closed is activated activated w when hen the the tonnea tonneau u cover cover has reached its end position during closing. The NCP receives a total of 8 Hall inputs to measure the position of various components: •
The Front Front Latch Open Open and and Closed Closed s sensor ensors s are used used to detect detect if the front latch latch motor starts moving, and reaches the end position. The sensors are positioned on the spindle mechanism of the left hand side front latch.
•
The Front Front Latch Latch Received Received sensor sensor is used to to detect detect if the front latch latch is is closed. closed. If the the sensor is active, the roof is completely closed. This sensor is integrated in the right hand side latch receiver, located on the windscreen frame.

DC-motors The NCP controls the DC-motor of each rear window lifter. The opening/closing movement of the window lifters is managed by inverting the polarity of the DC-motor. When the window lifter reaches its end position, the increased current draw as a result of the increased mechanical resistance enables the NCP to deactivate the DC-motor. By this way there is no need to use traditional end-of-run micro switches. The front latch mechanism locks the roof to the windscreen frame. The front latch motor is operated by a relay which is integrated inside the NCP. The motor of the electric pump of the roof hydraulic system is controlled directly by the NCP by means of an integrated relay. No external relay is used. Each DC-motor output of the NCP is protected against short circuits. It uses voltage feedback to detect error situations and a shunt resistor to measure each motor current draw.
Solenoid valves The NCP activates three solenoid valves, which control the direction and functionality of the roof hydraulic system. system. The solenoid valves valves are integrated in the hydraulic hydraulic unit.

Servicing the roof system The soft soft top top system system of the the Masera Maserati ti GranC GranCabr abrio io is desig designe ned d to be comp complet letely ely maintenance free. No periodic maintenance maintenance is required for both the mechanical and the hydraulic parts of the system.
Cleaning the soft top Generally it is not necessary to clean the soft top every time the vehicle is washed. In most cases it will be sufficient to rinse the soft top with water only. It is advised to wash the soft top by hand only. Firstly remove dirt residues with a vacuum cleaner. cleaner. Wash the canvas canvas with water and a neutral neutral shampoo by using a soft soft brush only. Do not use solvents, alcohol, alcohol, petrol or generic detergents detergents to clean the the soft top. Do not use high pressure pressure cleaning systems systems to clean the soft top. Avoid to wash the car in direct sunlight. After the canvas has dried, finish the cleaning treatment by rinsing the soft top with a product containing fluorocarbons to make the canvas water repellent. Note: if this treatment is not performed, the canvas will more rapidly get stained. Note: a series of specific products for soft top treatment are available from the Maserati parts department.

Emergency roof closing procedure A manual procedure allows to close the roof in the event of a system failure. Important note: the manual closing procedure can only be performed after the hydraulic pressure has been released. When the hydraulic roof movement is interrupted at any stage, the system will remain under pressure, and therefore the roof will stay in position, for 10 minutes. After this time the NCP will release all solenoid valves, and by consequence also the system pressure. Only after this time it is possible to manually move the roof. Alternatively, disconnection disconnection of the battery earth terminal results in the same effect.
