Students should study the following lists of words and their phonetic pronunciation, learning them by heart urith tht article attached. They will thus to a considerable extent
faster the gender of the nouns, and overcome one of the great It is necessary that these language. words be pronounced aloud that the ear may grow familiar with the sounds as well as the tongue with their expression. The new German orthography has been adopted, according to the Rules and Lists used in the schools of Prussia and published by Order of the Minister of Education, 1897. difficulties of the
The phonetic pronunciation given throughout is that of the educated classes of Berlin. The accent generally falla upon the stem-syllable and is marked by an apostrophe (') after the accentuated syllable, &sgeben (gay 'ben), to give. If the accent falls on two syllables, as ubermutig (eu"bair-meu'tich), arrogant, the two apostrophes (") mark the principal accent. All separable verbal-prefixes are accentuated ausalso when these tprechen (ouse'sprechen), to pronounce prefixes are used with nouns Aussprache (ouse'sprahchaye), The hyphen (-) indicates that the syllables pronunciation. must be pronounced separately. A stroke over the a (a) denotes that it must be pronounced very hard and long, as Bad (baht) bath a without the stroke is always to be sounded very short, as Ratte (raht'taye), rat. A curve over the t it must be pronounced short like * in bitter. (I) denotes that :

The division of words into syllables depends in German upon the pronunciation, and not, as in English, upon the etymology. Compound consonants, ch, chs, sch, dt, ph, ss, st, th, tz, cannot be divided. Compound words are divided according to their component parts, even if this division does not correspond with the pronunciation her-aus-gehen :
(hare-ouse'gay-hen), to go out. Every German noun, and other parts of speech used as nouns, as well as the pronouns Du (thou) and Sie (you) and the possessive adjectives Dein (thine) and Ihr (your) must be written or printed with a capital letter. The phonetic pronunciation of st and sp is that mostly used in North Germany, but some authorities are hi favour of the * being sounded as sh at the beginning of a
word (but less broadly and conspicuously than our common A*, and this receives favour in Southern Germany.

THE IRREGULAR VERBS. The Irregular Verbs are those which deviate from the Regular Verbs in the formation of their Past and Past Participles. The Past of the Indicative Mood is formed by changing the radical vowel or diphthong. The first and third persons Singular remain unaltered, the other persons take the same terminations as the Present tense. The Past of the Subjunctive Mood modifies the vowel of the Indicative, a in to d, o into 6', u into il, and takes the same termination! the Subjunctive Present.
