Essential Reading Timeline Composite
Evermeet Elminster #1-3 Cormyr series Avatar Trilogy Shadow of the Avatar Trilogy Prince of Lies Return of the Archwizard Elminster in Hell Realms of Shadows The Last Mythal The Year of Rogue Dragons The Last Mythal Note that the novels above are just novels that cause major gobal changes in Faerun, evolutions if you will. You can still read about Drizzt or just read the Arilyn & Danilo novels or pick up whatever else you want without reading them except when an event is referenced you’ll always wonder. The Cormyr series is out of timeline order in this composite, however I feel that like Evermeet , the Cormyr series has a lot of important backstory. If there are any novels in the Forgotten Realms series that could be consider history books, Evermeet and Cormyr would definitely be the two to read. The correspondence letters and prelude chapters of Evermeet should be considered Songs & Swords part 5 ½. You might want to familiarize yourself with that series first.
Essential Underdark Timeline Composite
Legend of Drizzt #1-10 Starlight and Shadows War of the Spider Queen The Lady Penitent It’s important to note that all novels written before the War of the Spider Queen were written using Advanced Dungeons & Dragons “rules” as a reference, and some of the Drizzt books, the original first edition. As a result the certain “facts” about the drow are inconsistent with later books. The War of the Spider Queen series is considered the update for the Underdark. The Lady Penitent and The Empyrean Odyssey continue the story for cards featured i n War of the Spider Queen .
Special Notes
1) Darkwalker of Manshae was the FIRST Forgotten Realms novel published. 2) The Crystal Shard was the SECOND Forgotten Realms novel published. Although in the timeline the Dark Elf trilogy takes place before it, the Icewind Dale trilogy was written first. The Dark Elf trilogy is a backstory for the Icewind Dale trilogy. I highly recommend reading the Icewind Dale trilogy first. By reading it first you’ll also g et feel for what you can expect from the rest of the Drizzt novels. The Dark Elf trilogy has very little in common storywise with the rest of the Drizzt books. It’s important to note that the new Legends of Drizzt reprintings are numbered and are in timeline order, NOT in publishing order, so don’t get confused. 5
3) Understand that characters like Elminster were originally designed as characters to help DM along, to give Realms products more flavor. TSR wanted novels based on him much later and when the novels became popular he was brought to print as a major character in Faerun, go easy on him, he’s got big boots to fill. 4) The Seven Sisters major introduced was part of the Setting. There are tidbits of history about them throughout the novels however there’s only 1 centeralized story about them, Silverfall , which doesn’t deal with to much backstory. If you wish additional information about them check out the AD&D Accessory The Seven Sisters . 5) Ignore the Heroes of Phlan , Children of Bhaal , and the Double Diamond Triangle Saga books. They’re ignore by the authors and in the case of Heroes of Phlan and Children of Bhaal , are simply tie-in products to computer games. 6) Evermeet was written and printed when the game accessories Elves of Evermeet and The Complete Book of Elves were the only sources of information available for Forgotten Realms elves. Cormanthyr: Empire of Elves portrays a different history of the elves that is inconsistent to what came before. The two can be blended together if you take the original literal meanings of things left undetailed and ignore where Cormanthyr Empire of the Elves embellished to make it fit according to the timeline it was trying to represent. 7) The Hunter’s Blades trilogy takes place immediately after Sea of Swords . This means that the Drizzt novels takes place BEFORE the 3E timeline, 1371. Do not confuse the events of the trilogy with what’s going on in the Silver Marches supplement. 8) The best way to get information on the Forgotten Realms is of course getting theForgotten Realms Campaign Setting.
