Food Industry in Latvia  Throughout our long  Throughout long history, history, Latvians Latvians have always been a nation of skilled farmers and livestock keepers for whom the rhythms of life were dictated by the changing seasons and daily farm chores. The country’s proximity to the sea created a climate and conditions favourable for farming and motivated coastal dwellers to become excellent �shermen. Milk from Vidzeme dairy farms, fresh meat from Latgale and Kurzeme, fresh �sh from the Baltic Sea, grain from Latvia’s granaries in Zemgale, berries, fruits, and vegetables from our forests, market gardens, and �elds – taken together, these ingredients guarantee the high quality of our natural products. Latvia’s food producers have embraced the challenge of meeting the demand for food that is fresh and natural, while taking advantage of modern technologies to ensure consistency, availability and safety.  The food and beverage beverage industry industry is the largest largest industrial industrial sector in Latvia, producing around 22% of the total output in manufacturing in 2015. More than 1000 companies and registered private merchants are active in food processing. As shown in this graphic, Latvia’s food sector has enjoyed steady and stable growth over an ex tended period. However, the global �nancial crisis was also felt in the food industry, which clearly aff ected ected industry output in 2009. More recently, in 2015, the industry was badly aff ected ected by Russia’s import embargo. Today, we can see slow but steady recovery from both of these crises. While experienced companies have managed to restructure their product lines and export markets, numerous young and dynamic companies have also been founded and are supplying new, healthy products to both local and foreign markets. DAIRY

Dairy farming is one of the oldest and largest agricultural sectors in Latvia, rich in tradition. In 2015, the dairy sector’s output totalled around EUR 326 million. In 2015, dairy sector exports reached EUR 84 million. In terms of products, traditional wisdom and recipes have been collected and adapted to innovative technologies. High quality raw materials and the creativity and great care of our specialists have allowed us t o off er er our consumers original, wholesome products of high quality. Dairy processing companies produce a wide range of products: cheese, butter, yoghurts, milk, kefir , sour cream, ice cream, etc. Since the 1930s, Latvia’s butter has been internationally recognized for having exceptional quality. In addition to off ering ering traditional, generally mild cheeses, Latvia now also produces diverse diverse new types of cheese with rich �avours and aromas. Latvia’s food processors work closely with scientists to create new and di ff erent erent products.

MEAT PROCESSING AND EGG PRODUCTION

Latvia has a well-structured meat sector, which has adopted EU methods to be in line with other member states. In 2015, sector output was EUR 320 million. Latvia’s meat processors have strong traditions in producing naturally smoked meats and sausages. The largest frankfurter and dumpling-producing plant in the Baltic States is located in Jelgava.

High-quality products are made by our poultry processing companies. The excellence of Latvia’s chicken products has been recognized far beyond our b orders and proven by international cert i�cation systems. In addition to our high-quality meat products, Latvia is proud to have one of Europe’s largest, most modern, high-quality egg production facilities, where eggs and a wide range of egg products have been produced for more than 30 years. BEVERAGES

One of Latvia’s traditional strengths is the brewing of beer. About 20 breweries are registered in Latvia; only a few of them export any products, as the great majority of output is consumed on the local market. Total sector output reached EUR 210 million in 2015. Recently, time and knowledge have been invested in the construction of modern distilled beverage factories, whose products are exported worldwide. Spirits are distilled from the highest quality grain and have achieved worldwide recognition. One of Europe’s oldest alcoholic beverage trademarks – Riga Black Balsam herbal bitters – is produced here and has become one of Latvia’s bestknown symbols internationally. As Latvia has bounteous supplies of high-quality berries such as sea buckthorn, blueberries, and cranberries, entrepreneurs produce juice from local raw materials and export it to neighbouring markets. FISH PROCESSING

 The long, sandy beaches along the Baltic Sea are a clear indicator that this is a la nd of �shermen. Latvia’s �sh processing plants combine considerable experience, long-standing traditions and modern technological equipment. Professional �sh-processing technologists develop new recipes and improve traditional ones to please customers. In 2015, the sector’s output reached EUR 161 million. Sprats have become the most requested and recognizable Latvian �sh product and are made at a number of plants. Riga Sprats in oil are known far beyond

Bread and grains, in di ff erent forms, have long formed the foundation of the Latvian diet. Rye and barley are the most popular grains grown in the region. The successful sowing, growing, and harvesting of grains requires profound knowledge and experience, acquired by our farmers over centuries. Meeting current quality and environmental requirements, grain growers continue to improve their professional knowledge and employ modern technology to ensure tha t �rst-rate raw materials are used to produce our famous rye breads and related delicacies. Cereal growers and bread producers work closely with scientists and nutritionists to develop products of the highest quality. Latvia is famous for its rye breads made according to age-old recipes and techniques. Our bakeries also produce many kinds of white bread, and more and more ecological products are being introduced into the market. In addition to tasty and healthy breads, our bakers also create delicious cakes and tarts which can be eaten fresh, or they can be frozen for a longer shelf life. Many types of biscuits , waffl es, and rusks are also produced. Utilizing buckwheat and oats, our grain processing companies off er an extensive and varied range of products – dietary, tasty, healthy and ecological variations on traditional porridges and mueslis. FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

Latvia’s location in northern Europe makes it an ideal place for growing a numb er of �avoursome fruits and vegetables. Mild summers with very long hours of sunlight give our fruits, berries and vegetables particularly high vitamin and mineral content. We export our fresh and frozen berries – both- wild and cultivated all over the world. Large quantities are supplied to the health-care industry, but specialised deliveries of top-class product to Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide. In addition, Latvia’s own processing companies utilise the latest technologies to quickly deliver produce from forest an d �eld to supermarket shelves, and to increase shelf life. Specialised products include reduced-calorie and diabetic products. Industry output in 2015 was EUR 62 million.

SECTOR EXPORTS

For obvious geographic reasons, the main export markets for Latvian food-processing companies are Lithuania and Estonia. Europe is a large market that consumes many Latvian products: cheeses, butter, milk and milk powders, canned �sh, fruit and berry preparations, pickles, various grains, meat products, confectionery, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. We have worked very hard and today, we can say with pride that Latvian food products are in demand all over the world – in Europe, Asia, Scandinavia, USA, Africa and the UAE – and we will not stop there.
