1. Underground Corrosion” –National Bureau of Standards Circular 579 From 1 91 0 t o 1 95 5, the National Bureau of Standards conducted an extensive underground corrosion study in which 36,500 specimens, representing 333 varieties of ferrous, nonferrous, and protective coating materials were exposed in 128 test locations throughout the United States.
National Electrical Grounding Research Project – Pawnee Site Excavation
2. Field Testing of Electrical Grounding Rods” – Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory (NCEL) In cooperationwith theNational Association of CorrosionEngineers, theNCEL conducteda 7-year program of testing metal rods for electricalgrounding. Copperbonded, stainless clad, an ga van ze s e e ro s were nc u e among o er ma e r a s. 3.National Electrical Grounding Research Project (NEGRP)– Pawnee Site Excavation
• The NEGRP was started in 1992 to compare the long-term performance of different types of grounding electrodes.
3/4” x 10’ galvanized rod removed after 10 years
• In 2003, one of the original sites (Pawnee) was excavated and the electrodes removed • 5/8” copper bonded and ¾” galvanized rod samples were exhumed. • The results were definitive : • The 5/8” copper bonded rod was virtually free of corrosion while the ¾” galvanized rod showed significant deterioration (see the pictures on next slide).

• Copper bonded rod dia = 14 mm coating 90 microns minimum.
•
Horizontal Strip Electrodes
• Copper strip 50 sq mm ( 25 x 2 mm). • GI strip = 90 sq mm ( 30 x 3 mm) ( 60‐70microns) • GI Pipe = 25 sq mm ( 2 mm thickness)
The low current density can be achieved by designing the electrode in such a way that the dimensions in one direction is large compared to the other two, thus a pipe/rod has a much lower resistance than a plate of equal surface area. Plate Electrodes are not very common as they are not as effective as vertical electrode and also expensive. McML Protection Technologies Pvt Ltd

Soil Treatment to lower the resistivity
• Highly conductive cementious compound • Increases the contact surface area
Conventional Methods
• Homogeneous and stable
Use of sodium chloride, magnesium, and copper sulfates,or calcium chloride, to inc rease the conduc tivity of the soil immediatel y surrounding an electrode.
• Doesn't leach into the ground
•
State or federal authorities may not permit using this method because of possible leaching to surrounding areas.
• Environmentally Friendly
•
The salt treatment must be renewed periodically.
•
Corrode and damagethe earth electrode
•
• Doesn’t corrode the electrode • Enhances the life of earth electrode. • Low Resistivity • Suitable for all terrain • Can be used in dry or slurry form • Permanent and Maintenance Free •

Earth Resistance
Earth Enhancing Compound- Application
Earth enhancement materials are typically placed around the rod in an augured hole or around grounding conductors in a trench, in either a dry form or premixed in a slurry.
Factors affecting Earth Resistance
1. Resistance of the electrode . 2. Contact Resistance between the electrode and the soil 3. Resistance of the soil from the electrode surface outward
• The first two are negligible part of total resistance • The resistance of an ‘earth’ is primarily determined by the soil resistivity
